Carrying signs proclaiming ‘Hold Wall Street accountable’ and ‘Foreclosures ruin communities,’ they demanded an end to massive bonuses for the bankers who they say helped bring on the financial crisis and credit crunch which dragged the United States into the deepest recession since the Great Depression. For the first time in [US Representative Ron] Paul’s long career of tilting at Alan Greenspan’s windmills, popular sentiment against the Federal Reserve has its chairman, currently Ben Bernanke, running scared. Last summer Bernanke launched an unprecedented public relations campaign, explaining himself in venues from 60 Minutes to town-hall-style meetings broadcast on PBS. In July testimony to the House Committee on Financial Services, Bernanke warned that H.R. 1207 would damage global trust in the Fed’s political independence and ‘could raise fears about future inflation, leading to higher long-term interest rates and reduced economic and financial stability.’ Paul, after shepherding his idea from fringe to mainstream, is almost giddy. ‘Now the Federal Reserve is less popular than the IRS!’ the congressman told a July gathering of Young Americans for Liberty in Washington, D.C. ‘This issue is never going to go away. Konzepte von gestern ungeeignet für die Lösung der Probleme von morgen

Zur Situation auf dem Arbeitsmarkt im Monat Oktober erklärt der Bundesgeschäftsführer Dietmar Bartsch:

Statt neuer Konzepte zur Bewältigung der Krise auf dem Arbeitsmarkt setzt die schwarz-gelbe Koalition auf eine Arbeitsmarktpolitik aus dem vorigen Jahrhundert. Union und FDP sind sich einig, dass es keinen flächendeckenden Mindestlohn geben soll. Zudem sollen auch die bisherigen Branchenmindestlöhne auf den Prüfstand. Union und FDP setzen auf Lohndumping und niedrige Löhne. Die Altersteilzeit wird nicht verlängert, obwohl es gerade für ältere Arbeitnehmer schwierig ist, einen Job zu bekommen. Niedrige Löhne führen nicht zu mehr Beschäftigung, sondern zu mehr Armut, wie die Entwicklung in Ostdeutschland zeigt. 20 Jahre nach dem Mauerfall ist im Osten die Arbeitslosigkeit nachwievor mit 11,8 Prozent fast doppelt so hoch wie im Westen mit 6 Prozent. Noch sind auf dem Arbeitsmarkt die Auswirkungen des Stillhalteabkommens zwischen Wirtschaft und Regierung und der Kurzarbeiterregelung spürbar, die Entlassungen im großen Stil verhindern. 3,229 Millionen Arbeitslose bleiben ein Skandal. DIE LINKE fordert vom neuen Arbeitsminister eine ehrliche Arbeitsmarktstatistik ohne Tricks und Schönfärberei. DIE LINKE hat auch im Oktober nachgerechnet: Die tatsächliche Arbeitslosenzahl liegt mit 4,49 Millionen deutlich höher, als die offiziell verkündete. Um die Krise auf dem Arbeitsmarkt abzufedern fordert DIE LINKE eine Verlängerung des Kurzarbeitergeldes auf 36 Monate und des Arbeitslosengeldes I für alle Anspruchsberechtigten auf 24 Monate. DIE LINKE fordert die Abschaffung der arbeitsmarktpolitisch widersinnigen Anhebung des Renteneintrittsalters auf 67 Jahre. Union und FDP haben mit ihrem Koalitionsvertrag gezeigt, dass sie eine Politik im Interesse der Wirtschaft und nicht im Interesse der Beschäftigten machen. Sie setzen auf die Ausweitung schlecht bezahlter und prekärer Arbeit und das Prinzip Hoffnung. Das ist zu wenig angesichts der Befürchtungen von Arbeitsmarktexperten, dass 2010 die Arbeitslosigkeit trotz statistischer Schönungen auf 4 bis 4,5 Millionen ansteigt.

US Official Resigns Over Afghan War

Karen DeYoung, The Washington Post: "When Matthew Hoh joined the Foreign Service early this year, he was exactly the kind of smart civil-military hybrid the administration was looking for to help expand its development efforts in Afghanistan. A former Marine Corps captain with combat experience in Iraq, Hoh had also served in uniform at the Pentagon, and as a civilian in Iraq and at the State Department. By July, he was the senior U.S. civilian in Zabul province, a Taliban hotbed. But last month, in a move that has sent ripples all the way to the White House, Hoh, 36, became the first U.S. official known to resign in protest over the Afghan war, which he had come to believe simply fueled the insurgency."

Every impulse on the part of the military establishment, its think-tank surrogates, Capitol Hill, and even the White House is to convince the American people that not only is building a formidable Afghan army doable, it is the only way out of there, however long it takes.
