Why the Wars Roll on

Ralph Lopez, Truthout: "As public opinion tips against the US military presence in Afghanistan, and Congress talks about 'doubling down,' as the pullout from Iraq is accompanied by steadily increasing violence, and talk turns to slowing or halting the pull-out, the question the anti-war public must ask itself is: What now? War funding for Iraq continues despite two consecutive Democratic majorities elected expressly to stop it ... Very few people know that on average 80 percent of their Congress members' and senators' campaign funds come from outside the district, and largely from outside the state. They come from industries like defense, telecommunications and financial services. What do they get for these contributions, even in cases when the Congress member votes against those contributors' positions on certain bills?"

Protesters fight on against mobile phone mast

By Pete Castle

September 04, 2009

TAXPAYERS are set to foot the bill for local authority mistakes after a planning inspector found that Elmbridge Borough Council had acted “unreasonably” when rejecting plans for a mobile phone mast.

The proposed Vodafone mast in Lower Green Road, Esher, was originally turned down by councillors in September last year, against the advice of planning officers.

Phone mast plans branded a 'disgrace'

12:32pm Thursday 3rd September 2009

By Neil Docking

APPLETON ANGRY residents branded the decision of councillors to approve plans for a 15-metre telephone mast by protected woodland in Appleton a disgrace at a meeting at Warrington Town Hall last Wednesday.

Protestors jeered and shouted ‘shame on you’ after Warrington Borough Council’s development control committee voted 5-3 in favour of Telefonica O2’s plans for the telegraph column and equipment cabinets on land off Longwood Road.

Obama is leading the US into a hellish quagmire

AlterNet
by Mark Ames

America now has more military personnel in Afghanistan than the Red Army had at the peak of the Soviet invasion and occupation of that country. According to a Congressional Research Service report, as of March of this year, the U.S. had 52,000 uniformed personnel and another 68,000 contractors in Afghanistan — a number that has likely grown given the blank check President Obama has written for what’s now being called ‘Obama’s War.’ That makes 120,000 American military personnel fighting in Afghanistan, a figure higher than the Soviet peak troop figure of 115,000 during their catastrophic 9-year war. Just this week, General McChrystal, whom Obama appointed to command American forces in Afghanistan, is talking of sending tens of thousands more American troops. At the height of the Soviet occupation,Western intelligence experts estimated that the Soviets had 115,000 troops in Afghanistan — but like America, the more troops and the longer the Soviets stayed, the more doomed their military mission became...

Obama’s war speech: An unconvincing flop

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

12/02/09

After 92 days of waiting for the Word from on high, the nation received its marching orders from our commander-in-chief — and it was a flop of major proportions. As his West Point audience looked on disdainfully — applauding only twice, and then tepidly — President Obama tried to make the case that his escalation of the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan is really just a prelude to withdrawal. But is it?

Imperial blues

Our Future Blog
by Robert Borosage

12/02/09

President Obama made the best possible case for dispatching more troops to Afghanistan last night. But his speech left me with a haunting foreboding. Surely this is the way that great imperial powers decline. Their soldiers police the ends of the earth. There is always another enemy, always a threat — sometimes imagined, often real — that must be faced. And meanwhile, the productive economy declines, the rich live increasingly off investments abroad, the poor depend on public sustenance, the middle declines. No battle is so costly that it cannot be afforded; no battle so unimportant that the nation must not be mobilized. The soldiers become professionals, ‘volunteers’ in our terms. The institutions of the Republic — the Congress, the Senate — are scorned, often deservedly so. The executive decides the questions of war and peace. The secret state expands. The country finds itself constantly at war...

Dodging the real questions on Afghanistan

The American Prospect
by Tim Fernholz

12/02/09

The debate is over, the speech delivered, and 30,000 more American soldiers are headed to Afghanistan at the behest of President Barack Obama. He didn’t look too happy about it. No one should be surprised, especially not his supporters. This was the candidate who called Afghanistan the good war, promising to nearly double the number of troops there. Now, after last summer’s fraud-riddled presidential election and the contemporaneous increase in the Taliban insurgency’s strength, he is trebling America’s military commitment to the conflict. … Afghanistan is not an easy case. … Beyond policy disagreements, the politics, both domestic and international, left the president painted into a corner. But his speech Tuesday night didn’t add much energy to his case for escalation because he did not leave the narrow confines of conventional wisdom on Afghanistan — conventional wisdom that many, even in Washington, have questioned...

Obama’s war begins

Slate
by Fred Kaplan

12/01/09

When Bush left office, the United States contributed slightly less than half of the allied troops in Afghanistan. By the time Obama’s escalation takes hold, this share will have risen to 70 percent. This is becoming more, not less, of an American war. It is also not yet clear why President Obama picked 30,000 as the magic number of troops. Was it a compromise between the 40,000 recommended by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and some lower number reportedly suggested by Vice President Joe Biden? Was it driven, at least in part, by budgetary factors? More to the point, what will they do once they get there?

The Obama surge

Mother Jones
by David Corn

12/01/09

Prior to the speech, polls showed that about half of the American public was skeptical about the Afghanistan war. Presumably, these Americans already know al Qaeda’s plotters are evildoers. So this speech is not likely to sway millions. But what’s been said a few thousand times in the past few days is definitely true: Obama has now made the Afghanistan war his own. This speech was just the opening shot in what will be a never-ending campaign to explain and justify a war that itself may be never-ending...

Time to leave

USA Today

12/02/09

Our social-engineering project in Afghanistan is a costly folly, one we could have avoided by heeding the proper lessons from the disastrous wars in Vietnam and Iraq. The president’s decision to double-down in Afghanistan parallels the Bush’s administration’s notion that unstable areas such as Afghanistan must be made ’safe for democracy’ or they will inevitably threaten U.S. national security...

T-MOBILE DENIED CELL TOWERS IN ST. ANDREWS SQUARE

Suzan Filipek

A city zoning administrator denied T-Mobile a new cell tower base station in St. Andrews Square in a 22-page report released last month. "The overwhelming number of letters and e-mails bear testimony to the pervasive sense that T-Mobile's proposed structure would not be beneficial, but on the contrary, detrimental to the character of the community," wrote city Associate Zoning Administrator Maya Zaitzevsky.

Upon hearing the Aug. 12 decision, Patricia Carroll, a board member of the St. Andrews Square Neighborhood Association, said, "This was a wonderful example of neighborhood teamwork and a wonderful victory for our neighborhoods."

Aus dem Text: „ Nach Dejours konnte so schließlich auch der Umgang mit Überlastung potenziell zu kollektivem Widerstand führen. Heute hingegen sei dies aufgrund von neuen Formen der Arbeitsorganisation, wie Zielvereinbarungen, Total Quality Management und der Evaluierung von Leistung u.a.m., nicht mehr möglich. Solidarität sei hier als Praxis verschwunden. Und zwar deshalb, weil diese neuen Formen der Arbeitorganisation zur Dynamik einer strukturellen „Zwangsindividualisierung“ führten, deren Effekt darin bestehe, Beschäftigte praktisch voneinander zu isolieren. Damit verknüpft seien neue Leiden, die Menschen unter diesen Arbeitsbedingungen dazu zwängen, Schutzmechanismen zu entwickeln, die nicht zuletzt darin bestünden, das Leiden anderer nicht mehr wahrzunehmen. Es fehlt eine Sprache des Leidens, die am Arbeitsplatz gesprochen wird und verstanden werden kann. Es fehlt jedoch auch an kollektiven Formen und Praktiken, dieses Leiden anders als durch Selbstmord sichtbar zu machen und es als gesellschaftliches zu politisieren;

Deleting the Bush Personality Cult from history

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald

09/02/09

[H]uge swaths of the right-wing movement were devoted to an unprecedented veneration of George Bush. A whole industry on the Right was created to convert him into a warrior-deity, including truly creepy reverence books by National Review writers . Some on the Right actually speculated that God intervened in our elections because he had hand-picked Bush to be our leader. Even Bill Kristol admitted that the GOP had turned into little more than a Bush-centered personality cult, telling the New York Times: ‘Bush was the movement and the cause.’ More than any single, discrete issue, what motivated me to begin writing about political issues was the warped climate of hero worship constructed — by the Right and the media — around George Bush as a ‘War President.’ If you search long enough on the Internet, can you find examples of random people or vapid celebrities guilty of excessive Obama worship? Obviously. One can find virtually anything using those methods. But the personalized veneration of George Bush, particularly during his first term, was systematic and engulfing...

An empire of consumption

Daily Reckoning

09/01/09

The big problem — obviously, the headline issue — with the US economy is too much debt. (That’s the BIG problem. There’s a long list of other problems after that.) And the debt problem is getting worse, not better. Debt is ubiquitous across US society. Debt permeates the culture. Practically the whole nation has bitten off more than it can chew. Within the past two generations, the US economy has transformed from what Harvard historian Charles Maier calls an ‘empire of production’ (which is what won the Second World War, for example) to an ‘empire of consumption...

Living in a Culture of Cruelty: Democracy as Spectacle

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "Under the Bush administration, a seeping, sometimes galloping, authoritarianism began to reach into every vestige of the culture, giving free rein to those anti-democratic forces in which religious, market, military and political fundamentalism thrived, casting an ominous shadow over the fate of United States democracy. During the Bush-Cheney regime, power became an instrument of retribution and punishment connected to and fueled by a repressive state, a bullying rhetoric of war, a ruthless consolidation of economic forces and an all-embracing free-market apparatus and media-driven pedagogy of fear that supported and sustained a distinct culture of cruelty and inequality in the United States."

US Extends Iraq Contract for Blackwater Firm

Matthew Lee, The Associated Press: "State Department officials said Wednesday they have extended a contract with a subsidiary of the security firm once known as Blackwater USA despite the fact the company is not allowed to work in the country.
