For the Sixty-Fourth Time: No More Nuclear War: Reflections on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Our World

Frida Berrigan, TomDispatch.com: "I can't help myself. I still think it's worth bringing up, even for the 64th time. I'm talking, of course, about the atomic obliteration, at the end of a terrible, world-rending war, of two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 6 and 9, 1945, whose anniversaries -- if that's even the appropriate word for it -- are once again upon us."

Menifee may hold off on new cell towers

10:00 PM PDT on Monday, August 3, 2009

By JULISSA McKINNON

The Press-Enterprise

The Menifee City Council will consider extending a ban on any new cell phone towers and may put limits on the size of guest houses at today's meeting set for 7 p.m. at City Hall.

According to a city report, the proposed moratorium on cell phone towers would give the city a chance to tighten current standards governing tower aesthetics and their proximity to homes, schools and parks.

Another goal of the moratorium would be to give the city time to address the electromagnetic emissions and noise generated by the ground-based equipment that accompanies the towers, according to the report.

Change you can freak out about

San Francisco Chronicle
by Mark Morford

07/31/09

This is the amazing thing about rabid global economic recessions combined with volatile environmental collapses combined with a tasty national identity crisis combined with a truly historic, revolutionary president combined with a gnawing sense that our species might not be long for this world after all combined with the overwhelming sense that something, somewhere, something big and meaty and interesting and maybe even profoundly and butt-shakingly unexpected, has got to give. This is the feeling: anything can happen. Nearly every day in this New Millennium Wonderland, we are swarmed by distressing, heartbreaking tales of woe and hardship and layoff, only to spin right around and read about something positive and uplifting and innovative emerging from it all, some unanticipated, rise-from-the-ashes kind of thing that whipsaws your perspective and pinches the nipples of your worldview...

GI Resistance Under the Radar

Sarah Lazare, Truthout: "What do you do if you are a soldier being asked to fight a war you do not believe in? For two former soldiers whose unit was ordered to deploy to Iraq in April 2005, the answer came in the form of work slowdowns, letter-writing campaigns, and one-on-one organizing with fellow soldiers. The result: they helped prevent their unit from deploying to a war zone."

Phone mast fury

Tuesday, August 04, 2009, 00:26

PROTESTORS claim planning laws may have been breached in relation to the approval of plans to build a mobile phone mast near four schools.

Campaigners battling against O2's plan top build at Wistaston, near Crewe, last night decided to send a four-page formal complaint to Cheshire East Council chief executive Erika Wenzel.

They were advised to take the step after presenting their concerns to the local government ombudsman.

Among their claims are that a petition with 300 signatures was ignored by planners, only a small number of residents were informed about the application and head teachers and governors of the nearby schools were not consulted, as required by legislation.

Bonuses Were Substantially Greater Than The Banks' Net Income

NY AG: Banks Paid Bonuses That Were Substantially Greater Than The Banks' Net Income

The report says that combined, these three firms earned $9.6 billion, paid bonuses of nearly $18 billion, and received TARP taxpayer funds worth $45 billion. Why did this happen? Because, according to Cuomo, when times were good the bankers rewarded themselves based on performance. When the economy started to sour - they decoupled the bonus structure from reality and kept rewarding themselves.

Pay attention to your pension because you may lose it

The drive to dismantle the welfare state has a new target. Governments have already gutted unemployment insurance and social assistance. Out-of-date labour laws make it tough to organize unions in the new, decentralized, service-based economy. Now, thanks in large part to the dynamics of the recession, pensions are under attack.

Banking Bandits Get Their Reward

thenation.com - By now everybody must know that the top banking executives responsible for our economic meltdown have no shame. Otherwise they would not have dared give themselves such hefty bonuses as a deeply perverse reward for actions that caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs and homes. But that also speaks volumes about the inefficiency of a system of rewards that has nothing to do with performance.

How many civilian deaths are acceptable?

The ghosts have returned in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As evidence, one can note the persistent pattern in which villagers, elders, and the Afghan and Pakistan governments cite high mortality figures, while the Americans engage in delay, denial, investigations of their own, and finally declare that the civilian casualties are far fewer than initially claimed.

So Much for the Promised Land

Elite African-American figures, Baker argues, long ago placed personal gain and career advancement over the interests of the black majority. They espouse positions that are palatable to a white audience, positions which ignore the radicalism and structural critiques of inequality by W.E.B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. And in a time when, as the poet Yusef Komunyakaa has said, "the cell block has replaced the auction block," they do not express the rage, frustration and despair of the black underclass.

Torturing Children: Bush's Legacy and Democracy's Failure

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "Nowhere is there a more disturbing, if not horrifying, example of the relationship between a culture of cruelty and the politics of irresponsibility than in the resounding silence that surrounds the torture of children under the presidency of George W. Bush - and the equal moral and political failure of the Obama administration to address and rectify the conditions that made it possible. But if we are to draw out the dark and hidden parameters of such crimes, they must be made visible so men and women can once again refuse to orphan the law, justice, and morality."

President Carter: Many Children Were Tortured Under Bush

Ralph Lopez, Thepeoplesvoice.org: "While Congress says it is gearing up to investigate what is old news, that CIA and Special Ops forces are killing al-Qaeda leaders, a decision of far different gravity is being contemplated by Attorney General Eric Holder. The new insistence of Congress on its oversight role, conspicuously absent throughout eight years of Bush, is suddenly rearing its head in the form of questioning a policy which has been in place with no controversy for years. The US has been hunting and killing al-Qaeda leaders outside of official war zones since 2004, when The New York Times reported that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had signed an order authorizing Special Forces to kill al-Qaeda where they found them."

“Culturally sensitive” imperialism

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

08/03/09

In Britain, they’re getting antsy about Obama’s war — the ‘Af-Pak war, that is. Without the poodle Tony Blair to cover for us, Britain’s ruling Labor Party — decisively smacked down in the recent elections to the European parliament — is grumbling about being stampeded by the United States into fighting another unpopular war. The House of Commons Foreign Affairs committee is complaining that the joint U.S.-NATO mission in Afghanistan is degenerating into a strategic disaster — or, as they put it, has become ‘considerably more difficult than might otherwise have been the case’ — and it’s all our fault. That may very well be true, but one has to ask: faced with an essentially impossible task like subduing the Afghans, under what circumstances would the effort have been any less difficult? Well, the Brits have a few suggestions to make...

Man takes on council over tower

By RHONDA MARKBY - The Timaru Herald

A Timaru man unhappy about a cellphone tower being installed near his home is taking the Timaru District Council to the Environment Court.

At a hearing in August, Bruce Spiers will ask the court to rule that the district council incorrectly interpreted its own district plan when it allowed a cellphone tower to be installed in a residential area.

A 10-metre pole and equipment cabinet was installed on the grass median of Craigie Avenue early last year without public consultation.

Mr Spiers can see the tower from his kitchen window. He approached the council at the time it was installed but with no success.

He is now asking the Environment Court for a declaration relating to cellphone sites in all of the Timaru District's residential zones.
