Calls Grow for Probe of CIA Plan for al-Qaeda Hits

Pamela Hess, The Associated Press: "Congressional demands for an investigation grew on Monday over new disclosures that a secret CIA program to capture or kill al-Qaida leaders was concealed from Congress for eight years, perhaps at the behest of former Vice President Dick Cheney."

To Many Iraqis, US Troops Have Not Faded Away

Quil Lawrence, NPR News: "Nearly two weeks after U.S. combat troops officially pulled out of Iraq's cities, the government in Baghdad is hailing the withdrawal as a sign that it is holding the U.S. to an agreement stipulating that all American troops leave Iraq by 2012."

Equality and Freedom

Maurice Ulrich, L'Humanite: "Two hundred and twenty years after the taking of the Bastille, new Bastilles offer a challenge to reason. Hundreds of millions of men, women and children live on less than a Euro a day, but that's not all. Access to water, massive air pollution, access to health care, to education, the situation of women, children and minorities are so many abysmal and often criminal inequalities in a world that people say has become a village."

Councillors 'to approve' phone mast

3:40pm Tuesday 14th July 2009

Councillors are expected to rubber-stamp a plan to build a 12-metre tall mobile phone mast in a sedate corner of Mill End.

Telecommunications giant Orange plans to build the mast, disguised as a lamp post, in Berry Lane, adjacent to a railway bridge.

Three Rivers District Council’s development control committee, which will meet on Thursday to discuss the application, is expected to raise “no objection” – despite the concerns of residents living nearby.

Only Forceful Action Can Turn Foreclosure Crisis Tide

Mary Kane, The Washington Independent: "The time may be ripe for a shift in strategy as the foreclosure machine grinds on, and new foreclosure notices reach the troubling milestone of 10,000 per day. A weak economy has added job losses and falling home values to the mix of toxic loans that prompted the crisis two years ago, making an already difficult situation even more severe. Government measures from foreclosure freezes to loan modifications have only served, so far, to stall the inevitable - and to create an ominous backlog of millions of pending foreclosures."

The Africa Obama didn’t visit

AntiWar.Com
by Kelley B. Vlahos

07/14/09

President Barack Obama’s trip to Africa did not include Somalia, but the president needn’t go there to see that U.S. policy in Somalia has been an utter disaster. In fact, it would have been impossible for him to get anywhere near Mogadishu, because there is no real government to speak of, not to mention clean water, safe shelter, or even enough hopeful locals to greet him on the tarmac. The capital city is worse than a ghost town, it is chaos, a space defined by relentless violence and a symbol of every failed attempt to fix it. From the safe distance of Ghana, Obama was able to reiterate the next in a string of ill-conceived attempts to help Somalia...

Should Americans be humble?

Tibor's Space
by Tibor R. Machan

07/13/09

After president Obama traveled abroad recently it became clear that he wanted to present himself and, indirectly, America as a nation, differently from how he believed President George W. Bush did this. In particular, Mr. Bush was generally seen by his critics as more of an ‘ugly American,’ following the character of the novel by that name, written half a century ago by Eugene Burdick and William J. Lederer (who exemplified the sort of American who tended to be insensitive to the rest of the world’s population, their customs and languages, etc.). Mr. Obama seems to want to change this by appearing to be less arrogant, swagger less than Mr. Bush. Instead Mr. Obama wants to be friends with virtually everyone, even those who have no interest it being friends with America and Americans, including him...

A new stimulus? Washington never learns

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

07/10/09

In Washington, the rule is: If a little poison doesn’t cure the patient, give him more. This rule is being applied not only to health care, where massive doses of government intervention are being prescribed to treat the toxicity of past government intervention. It’s also being used in the attempt to end the recession. When Barack Obama took power he told the American people that an ‘economic stimulus’ bill was indispensable to fixing the economy...

To mitigate economic Armageddon

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

07/13/09

The U.S. government is deeper in debt than it has been since just after World War II. When Bill Clinton, who actually reduced the federal deficit as a portion of GDP, left office, the Congressional Budget Office projected an $800 billion dollar yearly budget surplus for the years 2009 to 2012. Now CBO projects an annual budget deficit of a whopping $1.2 trillion. Although Republicans are blaming Barack Obama for this gargantuan budget gap, George W. Bush is responsible for 53 percent of the total, according to the New York Times. Another 37 percent is due to the recession of the early part of the decade and the global meltdown that began in late 2007. Obama is responsible for only 10 percent of the total. Yet the reason that Obama’s portion is so small is because George W. Bush, a big-government Republican, was in office for eight years, and Obama has been in office less than six months. Obama has been spending at a phenomenal rate — on a pork-filled stimulus bill and an expansive domestic agenda...

A Second Stimulus Package? Yikes!

Cato Institute

Investors understand that increased government spending diverts valuable resources away from the private sector and ends up imposing even more demoralizing taxes on labor and capital. A major study of 18 large economies by Alberto Alesina of Harvard and three colleagues appeared in the 2002 American Economic Review. This paper, ‘Fiscal Policy, Profits and Investment’ found that the surest way to make economies boom can be through deep cuts in government spending — the exact opposite of the ‘fiscal stimulus’ snake oil...

Training and responsibility

Unqualified Offerings
by Thoreau

John Yoo wrote memos justifying anything and everything that the President wanted to do. He knew, or should have known, that most of what he was attempting to justify was a crime. Most of the things that he was writing about were very, very obviously illegal. In writing memos on these things he was not engaging in mere academic exercises. He was providing the misinformation needed to persuade people in the field to commit crimes. And if one wants to argue (rightly or wrongly) that some of the things Yoo addressed were genuinely gray, that is all the more reason to expect more of him, given his responsibility to provide accurate information for people who are not lawyers. The harder the question, the more important it is to get it right. If anybody gets off on the grounds of ‘just following memos’ then that is all the more reason to prosecute the memo writer...

The end is near

Boston Globe
by James Carroll

07/20/09

It used to be that apocalyptic warnings about the approaching end of time came from sign-holding religious nutcases. Now they come from hard [sic] scientists. Most discussion of the threat of global warming is conducted in measured tones, with even dire projections offered with the necessary proviso that the future is uncertain. But as governments fail to act strenuously enough against the villainous carbon emissions, and as the broad public continues in a state of environmental quietude, if not indifference, scientific voices are sharpening the alarm. E.O. Wilson, in his book The Creation, used the word Armageddon to describe the rapid shrinking of Earth’s biodiversity. James Lovelock has foreseen a small remnant of the human population in retreat to the Arctic by the end of this century...

“Staying the course” prolongs Afghan war

Cato Institute
by Malou Innocent

07/10/09

Many prominent opinion leaders, including Henry Kissinger, argue that America should not withdraw from Afghanistan because doing so would boost jihadism globally and make America look weak. They concede that the war in Central Asia will be long, expensive and risky, but nevertheless claim it is ultimately worth waging. But those arguments and countless others rarely withstand close scrutiny. From a strategic and economic perspective, no tangible gains could outweigh the costs of America maintaining an indefinite presence in Afghanistan. Indeed, such a course would be counterproductive, as the US military presence in the region strengthens the very jihadist forces it seeks to defeat and erodes America’s already tattered reputation abroad...

Chips in official IDs raise privacy fears

Arizona Republic

07/12/09

Climbing into his Volvo, outfitted with a Matrics antenna and a Motorola reader he’d bought on eBay for $190, Chris Paget cruised the streets of San Francisco with this objective: To read the identity cards of strangers, wirelessly, without ever leaving his car. It took him 20 minutes. Zipping past Fisherman’s Wharf, his scanner downloaded to his laptop the unique serial numbers of two pedestrians’ electronic U.S. passport cards embedded with radio-frequency identification, or RFID, tags. Within an hour, he’d ’skimmed’ four more of the new, microchipped PASS cards from a distance of 20 feet. Increasingly, government officials are promoting the chipping of identity documents as a 21st-century application of technology that will help speed border crossings, safeguard credentials against counterfeiters and keep terrorists from sneaking into the country.

Chips in official IDs raise privacy fears

This weekend millions of Americans learned about the dangers of RFID in driver's licenses and other identity documents, thanks to a major story by the Associated Press.

Here is a link to the article:

"Chips in official IDs raise privacy fears" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/12/AR2009071200705.html

The article is a lengthy, in-depth investigation of RFID in driver's licenses and passports by AP reporter Todd Lewan, the same tenacious investigator who broke the story about implanted microchips causing cancer a few years back.

Please take the time to read the article in its entirety. It clearly indicts the poor security on so-called "Enhanced Drivers Licenses" or EDLs, the border-crossing ID cards that have now been issued to nearly 200,000 Americans.

As I wrote in Scientific American last fall, EDL's contain RFID tags that can be read from 30-feet away by the government, marketers, criminals, and anyone else with an off-the-shelf reader -- right through a person's pocket, backpack, or purse. They can be used to track individuals, identify them for marketing purposes, or infringe their right to anonymously assemble and speak out against injustice.

My article can be found here:

"How RFID Tags Could Be Used to Track Unsuspecting People" http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=how-rfid-tags-could-be-used

Todd Lewan's article cites many pro-liberty folks, including Mark Lerner of the Stop REAL-ID Coalition, Lee Tien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), security researcher Chris Paget, and yours truly.

I was thrilled to see the article appear on the Drudge Report, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, the San Jose Mercury News, the Los Angeles Times, Fox News, Yahoo.com, and over 450 other newspapers and media outlets.

While EDL's are bad news, the good news is that the word is getting out. Please help us spread it even further by posting a link to the article on your website, blog, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Digg accounts and everywhere else.

Soldiers Sue KBR for Chemical Exposure in Iraq

Kaitlynn Riely, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Nearly as soon as they arrived, people became sick - not just the soldiers, but also the KBR employees. First, Mr. Powell said, their noses would bleed and their skin would feel raw. They developed sore throats and skin sores and began to cough up blood. When asked, KBR told soldiers it must be allergies or a reaction to the sand."

Obama's Tortured Democracy

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "By refusing to release photos of those tortured by US forces, Obama sadly continues yet another element of the Bush regime, organized around an attempt to regulate the visual field, to mandate what can be seen and modify the landscape of the sensible and visible. And equally important, as Judith Butler points out, the Obama administration's application of the state-secrecy privilege grants it the power to determine 'which lives count as human and as living, and which do not.'"

Mortgage defaults spread as even 'safe' borrowers falter

No longer is the real estate bust simply the result of exotic, subprime loans that doubled payments and blew up in homeowners' faces.

Credit Losses Rising Anywhere and Everywhere

The delinquency rate on U.S. mortgages surged to a record 9.12 percent in the first quarter of this year. Late payments rose in ALL categories, including prime fixed-rate loans, the absolute "cream of the crop" in the mortgage world.

Bush Personally Ordered Visit to Ashcroft's Hospital Bed

US Needs to Listen to President Arias on its Role in Latin America

What Arias does say is: "This year alone, the governments of Latin America will spend nearly $50 billion on their armies. That's nearly double the amount spent five years ago, a ridiculous sum in a region where 200 million people live on fewer than $2 a day and where only Colombia is engaged in an armed conflict."

Pakistan: US drone strikes futile

Interior Minister Rehman Malik , "They're getting mid-level people, not big fish," he said. "And they are counterproductive because they are killing civilians and turning locals against our government. We try to win people's hearts, then one drone attack drives them away. One attack alone last week killed 50 people."

The More Things "Change"...

By Tim Gatto

The truth is that political parties don't run this country, money does. Our entire political system is based on wealth. This has been true in some degree since the day we gained our independence, but it has never been as apparent as it is now.

Lawmaker Won't Deny Secret CIA Program Was 'Cheney Assassination Ring'

By David Edwards and Ron Brynaert

When the committee was informed by Director Panetta, everyone was stunned across the board, Republicans and Democrats. As well as we should be in terms of having something absolutely concealed from all members of Congress. The top leadership of the Congress didn't know. So this is serious.

More Democrats Call for Investigating the CIA

Alex Isenstadt, The Politico: "Calls for an investigation into the Central Intelligence Agency intensified this weekend amid revelations that former Vice President Dick Cheney ordered the concealment of a covert agency spy program from Congress. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) said that the Senate Intelligence Committee should 'absolutely' investigate the program."

CIA lies

CounterPunch

If this were the democracy that the Founding Fathers thought they were creating, word from CIA Director Leon Panetta that his agency had lied to Congress and specifically that it had lied repeatedly from 9-11-2001 through the end of 2008 concerning an as-yet undisclosed secret program, would have virtually every member of Congress in a state of rebellion, demanding answers...

Calls grow for probe of CIA al Qaeda program

MSNBC

07/13/09

Congressional demands for an investigation grew on Monday over new disclosures that a secret CIA program to capture or kill al-Qaida leaders was concealed from Congress for eight years, perhaps at the behest of former Vice President Dick Cheney. The program, which never got off the ground and remains shrouded in mystery, was designed to target leaders of the terrorism network at close range, rather than with air strikes that risked civilian casualties, government officials with knowledge of the operation said Monday...

Stop The Presses! The CIA Lied
