Deflatorisches Gift sozusagen. The bailout state

The Weekly Standard
by Matthew Continetti

It’s not every day that you get to witness the birth of a new social system. But General Motors’ June 1 bankruptcy, and the company’s likely reorganization under the ownership of the U.S. Treasury, does suggest the arrival of a novel relationship — at least for the United States — between the citizen and his government. We’ve all encountered the national security state, where individuals give up a degree of civil liberty in exchange for protection from internal and external threats. And we live in a welfare state, where the government imposes obligations on certain individuals, in the form of taxes and duties, in order to secure basic social benefits for the entire populace. But the national security and welfare states are oh-so twentieth-century. This is a new day. This is the dawn of the bailout state... (for publication 06/15/09)

Democrats declare war on the poor

The American Spectator
by Robert Stacy McCain

06/08/09

Given the abject failure of the War on Poverty — as Ronald Reagan said, ‘Poverty won’ — now Democrats apparently have decided to go right for the heart of the problem, by making war on the poor. That’s the only plausible explanation for S.500, the ‘Protecting Consumers from Unreasonable Credit Rates Act of 2009,’ introduced earlier this year by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois). The bill would limit interest rates in such a way that pawn shop owners say it would drive them out of business. Currently under consideration by the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs committee, this legislation could only make sense to someone who (a) knows nothing about pawn shops, and (b) knows nothing about economics...

GM, Amtrak and an increasingly fascist America

by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

06/08/09

Last week, General Motors finally declared bankruptcy. Many in government thought $20 billion in taxpayer dollars would save the company, but as predicted, it only postponed the inevitable. The government will dump another $30 billion into GM and take a 60 percent controlling interest for it. Public officials are now involving themselves in tactical business decisions such as where GM’s headquarters should move and what kind of cars it will build. The promise that this is temporary and will eventually be profitable is supposed to ease the American people into accepting this arrangement, but it is of little comfort to those who remember similar promises when the American taxpayers bought Amtrak. After three years, government was supposed to be out of the passenger rail business. 40 years and billions of dollars later, the government is still operating Amtrak at a loss, despite the fact that they have created a monopoly by making it illegal to compete with Amtrak. Imagine what they can now do to what is left of the great American auto industry!

Glimmer of hope for mast campaigners

Tuesday, June 09, 2009, 00:00

A GLIMMER of hope surrounds villagers' attempts to scupper plans for a mobile phone mast near a primary school.

Parents united against the application to replace the existing antennas at Forest Row Fire Station back in March.

It was approved at a Wealden District Council planning committee meeting the following month, despite objections from dozens of villagers.

But now councillors are calling upon the government to reassure residents of the alleged health risks associated with phone masts.

Obama's Speech In Egypt

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

In calling for a "world order," Obama blatantly said "Given our interdependence, any world order that elevates one nation . . . over another will inevitably fail." Does everyone understand what Obama is saying? In order for this new "world order" to materialize, no individual nation can be preferred over another--not even our own. In a word, no country can be allowed to maintain national sovereignty, independence, or military superiority. All nations must be willing to surrender their sovereignty and independence to the new "world order." Furthermore, all nations must be willing to submit their militaries to a new global military. Oh yes, my friend, all of this is inferred in Obama's statement.

Comey Emails Illustrate Concerns Over Torture Policies

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Dick Cheney and his lawyer, David Addington, pressured the Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2005 to quickly approve a torture memo that authorized CIA interrogators to use a combination of barbaric techniques during interrogations of 'high-value' detainees, despite objections from senior DOJ officials, according to emails written by James Comey, the agency's former deputy attorney general. In the emails, Comey also wrote that then Attorney General (AG) Alberto Gonzales was 'weak' and had essentially allowed Cheney and Addington to politicize the DOJ."

“Legacy of debt” gives fiscal stimulus bad name

Bloomberg
by Caroline Baum

06/05/09

By the time the U.S. government unveiled its Public Private Investment Partnership in March, the toxic loans and securities clogging bank balance sheets had become ‘legacy assets.’ What if deficit hawks took the same tack and marketed the $787 billion fiscal stimulus as ‘legacy debt?’ ‘The $787 billion the U.S. Treasury will be borrowing or confiscating from you via taxation will saddle future generations with a legacy of debt,’ the press release might read. ‘Your children and grandchildren can look forward to higher taxes, a lower standard of living and minimal government support in their old age.’ Maybe the public would balk. And maybe some member of Congress would be bold enough to sponsor a measure to call off the still-uncommitted expenditures...

The trouble with Democrats

The Nation
by William Greider

06/05/09

The governing party faced an awkward dilemma. People were hurting and furious at the government’s generous bailouts for banks. But how could the Democrats do something for the folks without upsetting their friends and patrons in the banking industry? Democrats think they found a way. They are enacting a series of measures described as ‘breakthrough’ reform and ‘unprecedented’ defeat for the bankers. Only these achievements are more accurately understood as ‘reform lite.’ The house is on fire and Democrats brought a garden hose. The Democratic Party is changing in some promising ways, but what’s impressive is how much it has not changed...

Obama in Cairo: High words, low truths

CounterPunch
by Alexander Cockburn

06/07/09

As they drafted his speech to the Muslim world, delivered in Cairo on Thursday, President Obama’s speech writers strove to suggest that cordiality towards Islam is soundly embedded in America’s cultural history. … An early version of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ by Francis Scott Key, written in 1805 amid the routing of the Barbary states, offered a view of Islam markedly different from Obama’s uplifting sentiments in Cairo …. So America’s national anthem began as a gleeful tirade against the Mahommedans. And of course every member of the U.S. Marine Corps regularly bellows out the USMC anthem, beginning ‘From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.’ In short, America’s march to Empire was minted in the crucible of anti-Islamic sentiment...

Leave China alone

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

06/08/09

Before an American secretary of state gets up on her hind legs and lectures the rest of the world about ‘the darker events of its past,’ complaining about the lack of ‘a public accounting of those killed, detained, or missing,’ let’s look at the record: in 1993, then-attorney general Janet Reno ordered the murder of 76 people in Waco, Texas, on grounds that didn’t sound all that credible at the time, and, in retrospect, turn out to have been entirely dubious and self-serving. Can it really be that the U.S. government — yes, the same people who ordered this and this — is hectoring China for unlawful detention? As a great philosopher once said, oh, puh-leeeeeeeze!

Major problems found in war spending

In its first report to Congress, the Wartime Contracting Commission presents a bleak assessment of how tens of billions of dollars have been spent since 2001. The 111-page report, obtained by The Associated Press, documents poor management, weak oversight, and a failure to learn from past mistakes as recurring themes in wartime contracting.

Iraq's New Death Squad

Councillors sorry after Castle Bromwich phone mast error

Jun 8 2009 by Nick McCarthy, Birmingham Post

Councillors have apologised to residents after a mobile phone firm legally installed a mast three years after the council refused permission.

Officers at Solihull Council forgot to tell T-Mobile that it was refused permission in May, 2006.

They were supposed to write to the company within 56 days of rejecting the application, but they did not.

The council is now powerless to stop T-Mobile, despite rejecting the application in the first place.
