Corruption Is Dangerous to Your Health

Robert Borosage, The Campaign For America's Future: "This isn't about America being a 'center-right country,' the myth that pundits still peddle about the American people. This is about Congress being bought and sold, pure and simple. Each night, Washington slurps on political fund-raisers. Each day, the deals get cut; the favors get done. Now with Republicans lining up lemming-like to obstruct anything Obama, Congress can be bought on the cheap. The lobbies have only to enlist (suborn, bribe, seduce, finance) a few of what the press insists on describing as 'moderate Democrats' in the Senate to stop any reform they don't like."

Stopping Pakistan Drone Strikes

Robert Naiman, Truthout: "Until this week, it seemed like the conventional wisdom in Washington was that stopping US drone strikes in Pakistan was outside the bounds of respectable discussion. That just changed. Or it should have."

40 "militants" killed in US drone attacks

Soon after the attack, other militants staying at the building arrived and started rescue work. "They were recovering bodies of the slain militants when the drone fired two more missiles, almost 12 minutes after the first attack. It was terrible as almost all the Taliban involved in rescue work were targeted," stated a local militant commander based in Mirali.

Residents pledge to fight pub phone mast plans

Published Date: 07 May 2009

By Sam Chadderton

Outraged residents say they will fight plans for a mobile phone mast being put up yards from their homes.

People living on Leyland Lane were shocked when letters came through their doors informing them that a Vodafone telephone mast was to be installed in front of the Broadfield Arms pub.

Now they've joined with the pub in opposing the scheme.

The pub's manager Sandra Chester said: "We have just found out about these plans and feel it is going to be an eyesore. From the three rooms upstairs this mast will be the only thing I can see.

Europäische Allianz für Lobby-Transparenz und ethische Regeln (ALTER-EU)

LobbyControl-Newsletter Extra vom 7.5.2009

Banks That Received Federal Cash Enabled Subprime Lenders, Report Finds

Dina ElBoghdady, The Washington Post: "Many of the banks receiving billions of dollars in federal aid owned or bankrolled subprime lenders that directly contributed to the unraveling of the global economy, according to a new report. While many of these banks have portrayed themselves as unwitting victims of the subprime mortgage meltdown, they also enabled that kind of lending because it was lucrative, according to the nonprofit Center for Public Integrity."

A Cheney cover-up?

Mother Jones
by Nick Baumann and David Corn

05/06/09

Who in the George W. Bush White House tried to shred a memo challenging the use of torture? On April 21, Philip Zelikow, who was counselor to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during the Bush administration, revealed on Foreign Policy’s ‘Shadow Government’ blog that he wrote a memo in 2005 disputing the conclusions of Bush Justice Department lawyers that torture was legal. The existence of such a memo was a surprise. But Zelikow also disclosed that the ‘White House attempted to collect and destroy all copies of my memo.’ This story is not over. Zelikow tells Mother Jones that he doesn’t know for sure who in the White House ordered the suppression of his memo, but he says that his ’supposition at the time’ was that the office of Vice President Dick Cheney was behind the cover-up...

TARP as Shakespearean tragedy

QandO
by Michael Wade

05/06/09

Since last October when Hank Paulsen forced nine of the largest banks to take an initial injection of $125 billion in TARP funds (among other bullying), the federal government has committed about $12.2 trillion dollars to bailouts and spent about $2.5 trillion on such efforts (er, among other, other bullying). Aside from an increasing assertion of control over the financial and automotive sectors of our economy (among other, other, other bullying), there is very little to show for all this money. Which leaves the rather stark impression that government control was the goal all along — i.e. the method within the madness...

The rich and powerful can avoid risk

The American Prospect
by Robert A. Johnson

05/06/09

Recent discussions of the malfunction of Wall Street have centered on the role of statistical models that failed to accurately account for all possible outcomes. These less likely results, known as ‘tail risks,’ were underestimated by the models. Now the ‘quants’ on Wall Street and academia have a new research agenda, which is to figure out how to fix those models. … The challenges related to the distribution and management of risk are much more formidable than a technical fix because they are not technical problems. Managing and balancing risk in the future is an organic human problem, a political problem, and a problem of power. The question is how to remedy the fact that some players have the power to shift risks and to use the political process for insurance, while others do not...

Malaysian Oil Palm Threatens Brazilian Amazon

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

By Rainforest Rescue with Ecological Internet http://www.regenwald.org/international/englisch/ & http://www.climateark.org/ May 6, 2009

Malaysia's government owned and subsidized oil palm cooking oil and biofuel industry -- the scourge of Asia and the world's rainforests -- is continuing to expand, this time into the heart of the Brazilian Amazon

BRIEF BACKGROUND: Malaysia‘s Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) will soon break ground on a joint venture with a Brazilian firm to establish 30,000-100,000 hectares (ha; 75,000 – 250,000 acres) of oil palm plantations in the heart of Brazil's Amazon rainforest. Similar oil palm development continues to devastate Asia-Pacific's rainforests, and increasingly the world, with some thirty square miles of carbon and biodiversity rich habitat being cleared a day to provide cooking oil and transport biodiesel. Oil palm agrofuel is heralded as a climate change mitigation measure, yet the initial rainforest clearance leads to much more carbon release than its production and use avoids.

Large scale biofuel production runs counter to urgently addressing climate change and threatens to cause more deforestation, hunger, human rights abuses, and degradation of soil and water. Global ecological sustainability and local well-being depend critically upon ending all industrial development in the world's remaining old forests -- including plantations, logging, mining and dams. The amount of primary and old growth forests that have been lost has already overshot the carrying capacity of Earth. Globally there are not enough old forests to maintain climatic and hydrological cycles, meet local forest dwellers' needs, and to maintain ecosystems and the biosphere in total. Local peoples must be assisted to fully protect, restore and benefit from intact, standing forests.

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=amazon_oil_palm

Can Christians Serve In The New World Order Army?

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

Using U.S. troops as international "peacekeepers" only serves the interests of the international New World Order; it has nothing to do with protecting the lives and property of the American people. In fact, an argument could be made that every war the United States has fought since World War II has been unconstitutionally waged: for the purpose of fulfilling the globalistic aspirations of world leaders and not for the defense of the United States........

Fearing Health Impacts, Park Slope And Bay Ridge Lead Fight

By Harold Egeln
Brooklyn Daily Eagle

BAY RIDGE – Cell phone tower opponents here cheered Community Board 10 when the board joined allies in Queens and Park Slope, as the City Council moves to make it tougher for cell phone companies to place towers in neighborhoods, fearing possible adverse health effects.

At a recent Board 10 meeting, the board voted to back a call for stronger federal action to curb cellular antennae and support stronger rules on telecommunication towers placements. Giving the board’s efforts a boost were a recent achievement of tower opponents in Park Slope and new legislation at City Hall.

DOJ Report Reaches "Damning" Conclusions for Bybee and Yoo

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "An ethics report prepared by H. Marshall Jarrett, head of the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), reached 'damning' conclusions about numerous cases of 'misconduct' in the advice attorneys John Yoo and Jay Bybee provided the Bush administration, according to legal and Congressional sources familiar with the findings and news reports. The report, which also may be critical of legal opinions authorizing domestic surveillance activities, recommends state bar associations conduct a review of Yoo and Bybee's legal work to determine whether they should face disciplinary action, including disbarment."

Brunshaw phone mast plan blocked

Published Date: 06 May 2009

BURNLEY councillors have blocked controversial plans for a mobile phone mast in the heart of Brunshaw after listening to concerns from residents.
At the latest meeting of Burnley Council's Development Control Committee, members refused the application, from Vodafone to install the mast in Rimington Avenue on the grounds it would affect the visual amenity of the area.

A.I.G. Bonuses Four Times Higher

Eamon Javers, The Politico: "The 2008 AIG bonus pool just keeps getting larger and larger. In a response to detailed questions from Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the company has offered a third assessment of exactly how much it paid out in bonuses last year. And the new number, offered in a document submitted to Cummings on May 1, is the highest figure the company has disclosed to date. AIG now says it paid out more than $454 million in bonuses to its employees for work performed in 2008. That is nearly four times more than the company revealed in late March."

GREEN LIGHT: The phone mast will be in Main Street

A MOBILE phone company has been given the green light to erect a mobile telephone mast in the centre of Barrhead.

The plans by mobile giants Vodaphone to build the mast just off Main Street were accepted by the planning board at East Renfreshire council.

The mast will be the fourth in the town, two mobile phone masts have already been built in Thomson Farm on Gateside Road and another mast was built two years ago in Sharks Industrial estate.

Three years ago East Renfrewshire council objected to plans to build a mast near to Main Street.

Torture and Mr. Obama

CounterPunch

05/05/09

Okay, at least some things are settled. When George W. Bush said ‘The United States does not torture,’ everyone now knows it was crapaganda. And when Barack Obama, a month into his presidency, said ‘The United States does not torture,’ it likewise had all the credibility of a 19th century treaty between the US government and the American Indians...

The reluctant enablers of torture

Salon
by Sheri Fink

The recent Senate Armed Services Committee report on the treatment of detainees captured during the Bush administration’s War on Terror revealed that several American military officers acted to stop harsh interrogations of prisoners. Likewise, the Senate report showed that psychologists versed in the military’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape ‘SERE’ program, which was meant to train American soldiers how to cope with torture if captured by the enemy, warned officials as early as 2002 that reverse-engineering SERE techniques for use on detainees could be ineffective and dangerous. What has been little noticed in the report is that the same psychologists helped develop the very interrogation policies and practices they warned against...

The Faux Defense of Western Liberties from the Anti-Muslim, Mark Steyn Right

What swine flu reveals about the culture of fear

Spiked
by Frank Furedi

05/05/09

When Margaret Chan, head of the World Heath Organization, raised the pandemic threat alert from four to five in response to the swine flu outbreak, she had no qualms about using the language of fear. ‘All of humanity is under threat,’ she declared. When, in the future, historians look back on this performance of fear, and on the swine flu panic more broadly, they will surely ask themselves: was Chan speaking as a public health official or as a moral entrepreneur?

Flu overhyped? Some say officials “cried swine”

Quincy Patriot Ledger

05/07/09

Did government health officials ‘cry swine’ when they sounded the alarm on what looked like a threatening new flu? The so-far mild swine flu outbreak has many people saying all the talk about a devastating global epidemic was just fear-mongering hype. But that’s not how public health officials see it, calling complacency the thing that keeps them up at night...

AstraZeneca in US talks over swine flu vaccine as profits leap 40%

Swine Flu Martial Law Bill Clears In Massachusetts
The new Senate version would allow the public health commissioner — in a public health emergency — to close or evacuate buildings, enter private property for investigations, and quarantine individuals.

http://www.naturalnews.com/026141.html

What seems suspicious to me is the hybrid origin of the viral fragments found in H1N1 influenza. According to reports in the mainstream media (which has no reason to lie about this particular detail), this strain of influenza contains viral code fragments from:

• Human influenza
• Bird Flu from North America
• Swine flu from Europe
• Swine flu from Asia

This is rather astonishing to realize, because for this to have been a natural combination of viral fragments, it means an infected bird from North America would have had to infect pigs in Europe, then be re-infected by those some pigs with an unlikely cross-species mutation that allowed the bird to carry it again, then that bird would have had to fly to Asia and infected pigs there, and those Asian pigs then mutated the virus once again (while preserving the European swine and bird flu elements) to become human transmittable, and then a human would have had to catch that virus from the Asian pigs -- in Mexico! -- and spread it to others. (This isn't the only explanation of how it could have happened, but it is one scenario that gives you an idea of the complexity of such a thing happening).

http://www.lifegen.de/newsip/shownews.php4?getnews=2009-02-26-5323&pc=s01

There is no excuse. According to the scientific network PROMED, Baxter International Inc. in Austria "unintentionally contaminated samples with the bird flu virus that were used in laboratories in 3 neighbouring countries, raising concern about the potential spread of the deadly disease". Austria, Germany, Slowenia and the Czech Republic - these are the countries in which labs were hit with dangerous viruses. Not by bioterrorist commandos, but by Baxter. In other words: One of the major global pharmaceutical players seems to have lost control over a virus which is considered by many virologists to be one of the components leading some day to a new pandemic. Was it H5N1, or the even more risky H3N2? And what about the BSL3-Standards Baxter is operating when handling the viruses? What happened? And who failed? by Vlad Georgescu

Dr Horowitz: Mexican”Swine” Flu Made in Lab

Posted by: Clare Swinney ‧ April 30, 2009 ‧ Post a comment

In this special report at YouTube, medical researcher Dr Leonard horowitz2Horowitz says that the evidence the Mexican “swine” flu was created in a laboratory and released deliberately is undeniable. Link to the text related to this here.

Author of Emerging Viruses: AIDS And Ebola: Nature, Accident or Intentional?, Horowitz says the swine-bird-human flu strain, reported to be found first in Mexico in late-March 2009, could have only come from Dr James S. Robertson and his colleagues in association with the US Centre for Disease Control and vaccine manufacturer Novavax, Inc, which was ready to profit from the release he says. Nobody else takes H5N1 Asian-flu infected chickens, takes them to Europe, extracts their DNA, combines their proteins with H1N1 viruses from the 1918 Spanish flu isolate, additionally mixes in some swine-flu genes from pigs, then reverse engineers them to infect humans, he said.

A report in Medical News Today revealed that Novavax was working on a vaccine for an avian flu pandemic in 2005 and an article at News-Medical.net mentioned they began human clinical testing of a pandemic flu vaccine in August 2007. Also, in a news release dated the 14th of April 2009, shortly after the first reported case of “swine flu”, their vaccine was being touted as being able to protect against the “highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza strain.” Stated the Vice President of Vaccine Development for Novavax in this report, the vaccine “has significant implications for both pre-pandemic and pandemic preparedness.”

We can’t subsidize the banks forever

Wall Street Journal
by Matthew Richardson & Nouriel Roubini

05/05/09

The results of the government’s stress tests on banks, to be released in a few days, will not mark the beginning of the end of the financial crisis. If we are to believe the leaks, the results will show that there might be a few problems at some of the regional banks and Citigroup and Bank of America may need some more capital if things get worse. But the overall message is that the sector is in pretty good shape. This would be good news if it were credible. But the International Monetary Fund has just released a study of estimated losses on U.S. loans and securities. It was very bleak — $2.7 trillion, double the estimated losses of six months ago. Our estimates at RGE Monitor are even higher, at $3.6 trillion, implying that the financial system is currently near insolvency in the aggregate. With the U.S. banks and broker-dealers accounting for more than half these losses there is a huge disconnect between these estimated losses and the regulators’ conclusions...

Insolvent banks should feel market discipline

Financial Times
by Matthew Richardson and Nouriel Roubini

05/07/09

Joseph Schumpeter famously argued that the essence of capitalism was creative destruction, by which new economic structures are born from the rubble of older ones. The government stress tests on the 19 largest US banks … could have facilitated this process. The opportunity looks likely to be missed. The tests, which measure how viable banks are under adverse economic conditions, have no ‘failed’ category, even if as many as 10 are reported to need additional capital. … Once again, the question will be how the near-insolvent banks can be kept afloat, to avoid systemic risk. But the question we really should be asking is: why keep insolvent banks afloat?

A major investment risk: Congress at work

Christian Science Monitor
by Eric Singer

05/07/09

How much money did you lose last year? If you’re like most Americans, your retirement funds, college savings accounts, and any other investments tied to stocks suffered greatly. It didn’t have to be this way. You could have followed a simple investment rule that would have spared you from much of the past year’s losses. You could have invested only when Congress is on vacation. It may sound a little crazy, but I am totally serious. When Congress works – and by ‘works’ I mean ‘meddles’ — it destroys wealth. When Congress doesn’t work, wealth grows by itself. … As government power and influence grow, the trend has intensified in recent years. From 2000 through 2008, in-session performance of the S&P is –12.4 percent. The out-of-session performance: +8.8 percent...

Poverty, Tendency to Self-Medicate Help Drive Up Flu Deaths in Mexico

Joshua Partlow and William Booth, The Washington Post: "... a critical factor, according to specialists here, is that flu victims have delayed checking into hospitals until their condition has deteriorated so much they cannot be saved. Bad Trouble in Pakistan

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "The situation in brief: Pakistan for years has been a nation in turmoil, run by a shaky government supported by a corrupted system, dominated by a blatantly criminal security service, and threatened by a large fundamentalist Islamic population with deep ties to the Taliban in Afghanistan. All this is piled atop an ongoing standoff with neighboring India that has been the center of political gravity in the region for more than half a century. The fact that Pakistan, and India, and Russia, and China all possess nuclear weapons and share the same space means any ongoing or escalating violence over there has the real potential to crack open the very gates of Hell itself."

Masts threaten heritage

NOT HERE: Geraldine Kasper talks to workers about cellphone towers at Page Point. Times photo Wayne Martin.

ASSURANCES from city councillors may do little to prevent telecommunication equipment being put into a heritage area.

Angry resident Geraldine Kasper contacted the Times when a cherry picker vehicle turned up at Page Point, Mellons Bay.

Workers told her they were testing for transmission signals and investigating options two houses away from her home, where neighbours have put up a sign protesting against cellphone towers.

“We’ve had a lot of communication from NZ Communications and we’ve been fighting this,” says Mrs Kasper.
