Bush's Tortured Legacy

Dr. James J. Zogby, Truthout: "Two major stories, prominently featured in The Washington Post and The New York Times last Sunday, dealt with the Bush administration's use of torture. When combined, they raised several important issues. The front page banner headline in The Washington Post read 'Detainee's Harsh Treatment Foiled No Plots,' with the subhead continuing 'Waterboarding, Rough Treatment of Abu Zubaidah Produced False Leads, Officials Say.' Based on extensive interviews with former CIA and administration officials, the piece examined how the Bush administration dealt with Abu Zubaidah, a prisoner captured in 2002 in Pakistan. After a four-year stay at a 'secret CIA site', he was moved to Guantanamo. While, early on, President Bush heralded the capture of Abu Zubaidah (calling him 'a senior terrorist leader and a trusted associate of Osama bin Laden'), the story notes how, within weeks of his imprisonment, analysts concluded that he was not an official member of al-Qaeda."

Report Calls CIA Detainee Treatment "Inhuman"

Joby Warrick and Julie Tate, The Washington Post: "Medical officers who oversaw interrogations of terrorism suspects in CIA secret prisons committed gross violations of medical ethics and in some cases essentially participated in torture, the International Committee of the Red Cross concluded in a confidential report that labeled the CIA program 'inhuman.' Health personnel offered supervision and even assistance as suspected al-Qaeda operatives were beaten, deprived of food, exposed to temperature extremes and subjected to waterboarding, the relief agency said in the 2007 report, a copy of which was posted on a magazine Web site yesterday. The report quoted one medical official as telling a detainee: 'I look after your body only because we need you for information.'"

How Freedom Was Lost

By Paul Craig Roberts

Americans no longer know what freedom is. Historically, the definition of a free person is one who owns his own labor. Serfs and slaves were not free, because they do not own all of their own labor. An income tax is inconsistent with the historical definition of freedom. Today in America government has a claim on every person's labor, just as feudal lords, the government of that time, had claims on the labor of serfs and nineteenth century plantation owners had on slaves.

Bernanke's Financial Rescue Plan: The Glide-path to Destitution

The United States defaulted on its debt in 1933 when Roosevelt took office and pulled the country off the gold standard, thus, shrugging off the claims of foreign investors who were assured the US would honor its obligations in gold. Mast victory for campaigners

12:00pm Tuesday 7th April 2009

CAMPAIGNERS against plans for a new mobile phone mast near their homes have won their fight.

At a meeting of Thurrock Council’s Planning Committee on Thursday April 3 the plans, which were submitted by Telefonica O2 UK Limited, were unanimously rejected.

The plans were for a 12.5 meter high mast and equipment cabinet located within a highway verge in Lodge Lane know locally as The Spinney.

Residents living around The Spinney, an area of open space, have previously made their feelings clear by making placards and demonstrating.

They also handed Grays Thurrock councillor, Peter Harris, a petition signed by more than 200 people.

Further investigations for alternative Marlow mast site

COMMUNICATIONS giant Orange will carry out further investigations as a search continues for an alternative site for the controversial Foxes Piece mast.

In October 2008 the mobile phone company was granted permission to build an antenna at the junction of Little Marlow Road and Foxes Piece - close to the Marlow primary school - after Wycombe District Council failed to "explicitly refuse their application" in the 56 day period.

Residents, particularly concerned over possible health hazards for schoolchildren, wrote to the council to object in their hundreds when the application was put in.

Residents celebrate after phone mast plans are refused

10:36am Tuesday 7th April 2009

RESIDENTS are celebrating a victory after a planning committee unanimously voted against plans to build a mobile phone mast in a residential area of Marshalswick.

Orange applied for permission to erect an eight metre high pole to replace an existing lamp post, and to build an equipment box on the land.

The proposals, which were considered for prior approval last night at the central planning committee meeting, would have been sited on a triangular piece of green land on the corner of Gurney Court Road and Sandpit Lane.

Government stimulus packages are attempts to deny reality

Rebirth of Reason
by Edward W. Younkins

04/06/09

Government demand-management policies aimed at stimulating economic activity do not and cannot create any new wealth — economic stimulants will not succeed. Government stimulus proposals are illogical. The government cannot inject money into the economy without first removing it from the economy. The government can distribute funds only by collecting more taxes, borrowing from the private sector, or printing additional money. There can be no stimulus if the government increases the ability of some people to spend by decreasing other people’s ability to spend. When a government taxes or borrows it simply transfers spending power from private owners to political spenders...

He was not released, however, because, although the U.S. government had secured a ‘diplomatic assurance’ from the government of the Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, which purported to guarantee that returned prisoners would be treated humanely, two prisoners returned in June 2007 were apparently mistreated in Tunisian custody and were then imprisoned after what were regarded by human rights observers as show trials...

Goodbye, Bill of Rights

AntiWar.Com
by Philip Giraldi

04/07/09

Sen. Barack Obama opposed the MCA and voted against it. He was not in the Senate when the first PATRIOT Act was passed, but he criticized the second version for its abuse of civil liberties before voting for an amended version. Candidate Obama ran on his record of opposition to the various pieces of legislation, noting consistently that they had authorized the abuse of authority by law enforcement and had abridged the rights of every American. Unfortunately, President Obama appears to have forgotten the principled positions he took as a senator and presidential candidate. After his inauguration, he moved quickly to publicly ban the CIA’s use of torture, a meaningless gesture in that the Agency had already abandoned the practice, but it now appears that he will do nothing to revoke Bush-era legislation like the MCA that he once strongly criticized. There is every indication that he will also endorse renewal of the PATRIOT Act when it expires at the end of the year, afraid that if he does not do so and there is a terrorist attack he will pay a significant political price. The Obama administration has also been silent about the National Security Agency’s warrantless wiretaps and has invoked the ’state-secrets privilege’ in connection with a lawsuit by the Islamic charity al-Haramain in an apparent bid to prevent disclosure of the warrantless wiretap procedure...

Government based on coercion cannot be tamed

The U.S. federal government is on a course of self-destruction. People of many political persuasions know this. People who are against coercive government know this. People who favor coercive government know this. People who do not mind if the federal government self-destructs know this, and people who want to save the federal government know this. From a scientific viewpoint, one of the interesting aspects of a government that is self-destructing is that the process cannot be stopped, even when people who want to stop it, try. Government based on coercion cannot be tamed. It keeps on running until the clock stops ticking and the bomb goes off...

Obama's new war doctrine: `Cyber dominance'

By Agence France-Presse

Published: May 30, 2009

The US military is moving ahead with plans to create its first "cyber command" designed to bolster America's potential to wage digital warfare as well as defend against mounting cyber threats, officials said on Friday.

After President Barack Obama announced Friday his plans to overhaul cyber security policy, Defense Secretary Robert Gates was expected to soon formally propose the new cyber command that will be overseen by a four-star officer, Pentagon officials told AFP.

The move reflects a shift in military strategy with "cyber dominance" now part of US war doctrine and growing alarm over the perceived threat posed by digital espionage coming from China, Russia and elsewhere.

Cybersecurity Act Would Give President Power to 'Shut Down' Internet

Senate proposal could handcuff Internet freedoms

Fox News

04/21/09

The days of an open, largely unregulated Internet may soon come to an end. A bill making its way through Congress proposes to give the U.S. government authority over all networks considered part of the nation’s critical infrastructure. Under the proposed Cybersecurity Act of 2009, the president would have the authority to shut down Internet traffic to protect national security. The government also would have access to digital data from a vast array of industries including banking, telecommunications and energy. A second bill, meanwhile, would create a national cybersecurity adviser — commonly referred to as the cybersecurity czar — within the White House to coordinate strategy with a wide range of federal agencies involved. The need for greater cybersecurity is obvious. … Nonetheless, the proposal to give the U.S. government the authority to regulate the Internet is sounding alarms among critics who say it’s another case of big government getting bigger and more intrusive...

Putin: plans to use force against Iran "counterproductive"

"We believe that force has been overused on the international arena lately. Instead of conducting unpleasant long talks, problems are too often resolved through the use of crude force which is counterproductive," said the prime minister.

Spain Investigates What America Should

By Marjorie Cohn

A Spanish court has initiated criminal proceedings against six former officials of the Bush administration. John Yoo, Jay Bybee, David Addington, Alberto Gonzales, William Haynes and Douglas Feith may face charges in Spain for authorizing torture at Guantánamo Bay. If arrest warrants are issued, Spain and any of the other 24 countries that are parties to European extradition conventions could arrest these six men when they travel abroad.

Democrats and War Escalation

By Norman Solomon

Top Democrats and many prominent supporters -- with vocal agreement, tactical quibbles or total silence -- are assisting the escalation of the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The predictable results will include much more killing and destruction. Back home, on the political front, the escalation will drive deep wedges into the Democratic Party.

Bring an End to 'Triple Evils' by Abandoning War

By Kevin Martin and Leslie Cagan

Until fundamental changes are made in U.S. foreign policy -- an end to blank-check support for Israel, an end to U.S. occupation and military bases in Arab lands, an end to threats to Iran, an end to the chimera of the "global war on terror" (or whatever they call it now), an end to hypocrisy on nuclear proliferation, and concrete steps to address legitimate grievances in the Arab and Muslim world -- whatever we do in Afghanistan or Pakistan, short of a massive occupation that would be immoral and we can't afford, is doomed to failure.

Hunderttausende gegen Berlusconi

Mobile mast bid rejected

Last updated 11:52, Monday, 06 April 2009

A PROPOSAL by a mobile phone company to erect a telecommunications pole on a scenic Lake District road has been rejected by planners.

Orange wanted to erect the pole on the verge of the road leading up to Kirkstone Pass.

The company applied to site a 12m pole with antenna, dish and equipment cabinets, in a gap in the existing verge along the A592 at Browhead near St Anne’s School.

They said this would allow a line of sight to other telecom installations in the area, including one at Wray Castle on the western shore of Windermere.

The application follows the proposed decommissioning of an existing installation on the roof of Elleray School, part of the St Anne’s School complex.

Head of development management David McGowan told the development control committee the school no longer wanted to host an antenna because of health considerations. The new mast would replace part of the coverage lost.

A Trillion Dollars for the Banks: How About a Second Opinion?

Dean Baker, Truthout: "Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wants to have the government lend up to a trillion dollars to hedge funds, private equity, funds and the banks themselves to clear their books of toxic assets. The plan implies a substantial subsidy to the banks. It is likely to result in the disposal of these assets at far above market value, with the government picking up the losses. As much as we all want to help out the Wall Street bankers in their hour of need, taxpayers may reasonably ask whether this is the best use of our money. After all, the $1 trillion that is being set aside for this latest TARP variation is equal to 300 million SCHIP kid years. Congress has had heated debates over sums that were a small fraction of this size. To give another useful measuring stick, the Geithner plan could fund 1 million of the Woodstock museums that were the main prop of Senator McCain's presidential campaign."

http://www.truthout.org/040609J

The Radicalization of Ben Bernanke

Simon Johnson and James Kwak, The Washington Post: "Timothy Geithner and his predecessor Henry Paulson have been the public faces of the US government's battle against the global economic crisis. But even as the secretaries of the Treasury have garnered the headlines -- as well as popular anger surrounding bank bailouts and corporate bonuses -- another official has quickly amassed great influence by committing trillions of dollars to keep markets afloat, radically redefining his institution and taking on serious risks as he seeks to rescue the American economy."

Global Crime Wave? A Syndrome of Crime, Violence and Repression on the Way

Michael T. Klare, TomDispatch.com: "In all catastrophes, there are always winners among the host of losers and victims. Bad times, like good ones, generate profits for someone. In the case of the present global economic meltdown, with our world at the brink and up to 50 million people potentially losing their jobs by the end of this year, one winner is likely to be criminal activity and crime syndicates. From Mexico to Africa, Russia to China, the pool of the desperate and the bribable is expanding exponentially, pointing to a sharp upturn in global crime."

Scrap the Summers-Geithner plan

Boston Globe
by Laurence J. Kotlikoff

04/06/09

It’s one thing for the US Treasury Department to overpay banks for their toxic assets on the prayer that bank shareholders will do something besides pocket it — something that will help the economy. It’s another thing to set up a complex leveraged auction scheme to surreptitiously make the transfer. And it’s yet a third thing to set up a scheme that will lead the banks to overbid for their own toxics to garner even larger windfalls and end up with the toxics still in their hands. Suppose the government tells the market that it will match dollar for dollar bids to buy a toxic asset called Troubled from Seamy Bank. Absent the subsidy, Troubled would be worth $1 billion — only 20 percent of its $5 billion face value. With the subsidy, bidders will offer $2 billion since their net cost is just $1 billion, which is Troubled’s true value. Seamy Bank’s profit from the ’sale’ equals $1 billion (the $2 billion it receives less the $1 billion it hands over in the form of surrendering title to Troubled.)...

Who Owns Life, Not Monsanto?

ISIS Report 06/04/09

Percy Schmeiser is a real life hero who played David to Monsanto’s Goliath, and like David, he won Sam Burcher

Governments approve Monsanto’s GM crops

Percy Schmeiser and his wife Louise are third generation farmers from the prairies of Western Canada in the province of Saskatchewan near the city of Saskatoon. They feel really blessed not only that his grandparents moved there, but by the fact that in Central Saskatchewan so many types of grain crops can be grown; pulses, oil seeds, in what the locals call God’s Country.

The Schmeisers, like hundreds of thousands of farmers all over the world, were using their canola (oilseed rape) seed from year to year and developing new varieties suitable for climatic soil conditions on the prairies. Percy had also been the Mayor of his town for over thirty years, a member of the provincial Parliament and an active member of agricultural committees representing his province on new agricultural policy, law and regulations for the benefit of farmers.

In 1996, the Canadian Federal Government and the US Government gave regulatory approval to four genetically modified (GM) crops: soya, corn or maize, cotton and canola. At the time not all GM crops in Canada were herbicide tolerant except for Monsanto’s Roundup Ready canola and soya, both resistant to the company’s herbicide Roundup. The US Government had also approved Bt cotton and Bt corn that has the added GM toxin from Bacillus thuringenisis (Bt). The Canadian government were fully complicit in allowing Monsanto to develop GM crops on Government test plots and research stations in return for a royalty on every bushel of GM crops sold.

Monsanto versus farmer

In 1998, two years after the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Canada, the Schmeisers received a lawsuit notice from Monsanto which said that they were growing Roundup Ready canola without a licence from Monsanto and that this was a patent infringement. Monsanto had a patent on a gene to make GM canola resistant to the glyphosate herbicide in its formulation Roundup. This came as a complete surprise to the Schmeisers who immediately realised that all their research and development on canola over the past fifty years had been contaminated by Monsanto’s GMOs. They felt that they had a case against Monsanto for liability and the damages possibly caused to them, and that was the beginning of [1] Schmeiser's Battle for the Seed (SiS 19). And 10 years on, the Schmeisers have been invited to London to tell their full story [2].

The Schmeisers stood up to Monsanto’s claims of patent infringement in the Federal Court with just one judge and no jury. The pre-trial took two years to go to court in which Monsanto claimed that despite having no knowledge of Percy Schmeiser ever having obtained any GM seed, he must have used their seed on his 1 030 acres of land because ninety- eight percent of the land was GM contaminated. And, because the Schmeisers had contaminated their own seed supply with Monsanto seed, ownership of the Schmeisers seed supply reverted to Monsanto under patent law.

The American Experiment

“He who wishes”

Liberty & Power
by Charles W. Nuckolls

04/05/09

In modern democracies freedom is usually construed as freedom from contraint by others. The same was true in ancient Athens, the opinions of Plato and Aristotle notwithstanding. However, the Athenians believed that preserving freedom depended on the fulfillment of civic responsilbiities. Freedom, in other words, was both a prequisite and a product of citizenship. But why is the citizen motivated to participation? This is something I would consider essential to preserving democracy and preventing the rise of an entrenched elite. Citizens must take the initiative. But we find less and less of that today, especially in the universities, which have become holding pens for inert and essentially passive consumers-in-training...

The history of the American Experiment in self government has always been viewed as a battle between dichotomous ideas struggling for supremacy over the other … federalist vs. anti-federalist; conservative vs. liberal; republican vs. democrat; urban vs. agrarian; north vs. south; east vs. west; central government vs. states rights; freedom vs. security; black vs. white; rich vs. poor; business vs. labor; educated vs. uneducated; interventionist vs. isolationist; inheritor vs. usurper; patriot vs. traitor; traditionalist vs revisionist; living constitution vs. original intent; hawk vs. dove; defender vs. apologist; secrecy vs. transparency; communist vs capitalist; church vs. state; chaos vs. order; good vs. evil; us vs. them; you vs. me. It is a mindset that can be expressed in the idea that ‘those who are not with us are against us and those who are against us are our enemies’. The history of the American Experiment has been seen as a polarized conflict between opposing forces but, what America has never been good at is recognizing nuance, shades of grey, middle ground or balance...

The two faces of Barack Obama

Like Americans, the Europeans want to believe — but they see the two faces of Barack Obama too clearly, and the contrast is too apparent to be denied. The gullible Americans, who take things at face value, still believe their new president represents a real change, a challenge to the status quo, while the more sophisticated Europeans are quick to pick up on Obama’s inconsistencies — made all the more glaring by his habit of pairing two mutually contradictory stances on the same issue. This includes not only coupling missile ‘defense’ in Eastern Europe with the prospect of a nuclear-free world, but also the recent launching of his ‘Af-Pak’ initiative. Although dressed up as a diplomatic offensive, this is essentially a military offensive aimed at widening the war in Afghanistan to include portions of Pakistan...
