Jeder neunte Arbeitslose braucht laut DGB Arbeitslosengeld plus "Hartz IV"

Spain Investigates What America Should

By Marjorie Cohn

A Spanish court has initiated criminal proceedings against six former officials of the Bush administration. John Yoo, Jay Bybee, David Addington, Alberto Gonzales, William Haynes and Douglas Feith may face charges in Spain for authorizing torture at Guantánamo Bay. If arrest warrants are issued, Spain and any of the other 24 countries that are parties to European extradition conventions could arrest these six men when they travel abroad.

Democrats and War Escalation

By Norman Solomon

Top Democrats and many prominent supporters -- with vocal agreement, tactical quibbles or total silence -- are assisting the escalation of the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The predictable results will include much more killing and destruction. Back home, on the political front, the escalation will drive deep wedges into the Democratic Party.

Hunderttausende gegen Berlusconi

Mobile mast bid rejected

Last updated 11:52, Monday, 06 April 2009

A PROPOSAL by a mobile phone company to erect a telecommunications pole on a scenic Lake District road has been rejected by planners.

Orange wanted to erect the pole on the verge of the road leading up to Kirkstone Pass.

The company applied to site a 12m pole with antenna, dish and equipment cabinets, in a gap in the existing verge along the A592 at Browhead near St Anne’s School.

They said this would allow a line of sight to other telecom installations in the area, including one at Wray Castle on the western shore of Windermere.

The application follows the proposed decommissioning of an existing installation on the roof of Elleray School, part of the St Anne’s School complex.

Head of development management David McGowan told the development control committee the school no longer wanted to host an antenna because of health considerations. The new mast would replace part of the coverage lost.

A Trillion Dollars for the Banks: How About a Second Opinion?

Dean Baker, Truthout: "Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner wants to have the government lend up to a trillion dollars to hedge funds, private equity, funds and the banks themselves to clear their books of toxic assets. The plan implies a substantial subsidy to the banks. It is likely to result in the disposal of these assets at far above market value, with the government picking up the losses. As much as we all want to help out the Wall Street bankers in their hour of need, taxpayers may reasonably ask whether this is the best use of our money. After all, the $1 trillion that is being set aside for this latest TARP variation is equal to 300 million SCHIP kid years. Congress has had heated debates over sums that were a small fraction of this size. To give another useful measuring stick, the Geithner plan could fund 1 million of the Woodstock museums that were the main prop of Senator McCain's presidential campaign."

http://www.truthout.org/040609J

The Radicalization of Ben Bernanke

Simon Johnson and James Kwak, The Washington Post: "Timothy Geithner and his predecessor Henry Paulson have been the public faces of the US government's battle against the global economic crisis. But even as the secretaries of the Treasury have garnered the headlines -- as well as popular anger surrounding bank bailouts and corporate bonuses -- another official has quickly amassed great influence by committing trillions of dollars to keep markets afloat, radically redefining his institution and taking on serious risks as he seeks to rescue the American economy."

Global Crime Wave? A Syndrome of Crime, Violence and Repression on the Way

Michael T. Klare, TomDispatch.com: "In all catastrophes, there are always winners among the host of losers and victims. Bad times, like good ones, generate profits for someone. In the case of the present global economic meltdown, with our world at the brink and up to 50 million people potentially losing their jobs by the end of this year, one winner is likely to be criminal activity and crime syndicates. From Mexico to Africa, Russia to China, the pool of the desperate and the bribable is expanding exponentially, pointing to a sharp upturn in global crime."

Scrap the Summers-Geithner plan

Boston Globe
by Laurence J. Kotlikoff

04/06/09

It’s one thing for the US Treasury Department to overpay banks for their toxic assets on the prayer that bank shareholders will do something besides pocket it — something that will help the economy. It’s another thing to set up a complex leveraged auction scheme to surreptitiously make the transfer. And it’s yet a third thing to set up a scheme that will lead the banks to overbid for their own toxics to garner even larger windfalls and end up with the toxics still in their hands. Suppose the government tells the market that it will match dollar for dollar bids to buy a toxic asset called Troubled from Seamy Bank. Absent the subsidy, Troubled would be worth $1 billion — only 20 percent of its $5 billion face value. With the subsidy, bidders will offer $2 billion since their net cost is just $1 billion, which is Troubled’s true value. Seamy Bank’s profit from the ’sale’ equals $1 billion (the $2 billion it receives less the $1 billion it hands over in the form of surrendering title to Troubled.)...

Who Owns Life, Not Monsanto?

ISIS Report 06/04/09

Percy Schmeiser is a real life hero who played David to Monsanto’s Goliath, and like David, he won Sam Burcher

Governments approve Monsanto’s GM crops

Percy Schmeiser and his wife Louise are third generation farmers from the prairies of Western Canada in the province of Saskatchewan near the city of Saskatoon. They feel really blessed not only that his grandparents moved there, but by the fact that in Central Saskatchewan so many types of grain crops can be grown; pulses, oil seeds, in what the locals call God’s Country.

The Schmeisers, like hundreds of thousands of farmers all over the world, were using their canola (oilseed rape) seed from year to year and developing new varieties suitable for climatic soil conditions on the prairies. Percy had also been the Mayor of his town for over thirty years, a member of the provincial Parliament and an active member of agricultural committees representing his province on new agricultural policy, law and regulations for the benefit of farmers.

In 1996, the Canadian Federal Government and the US Government gave regulatory approval to four genetically modified (GM) crops: soya, corn or maize, cotton and canola. At the time not all GM crops in Canada were herbicide tolerant except for Monsanto’s Roundup Ready canola and soya, both resistant to the company’s herbicide Roundup. The US Government had also approved Bt cotton and Bt corn that has the added GM toxin from Bacillus thuringenisis (Bt). The Canadian government were fully complicit in allowing Monsanto to develop GM crops on Government test plots and research stations in return for a royalty on every bushel of GM crops sold.

Monsanto versus farmer

In 1998, two years after the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Canada, the Schmeisers received a lawsuit notice from Monsanto which said that they were growing Roundup Ready canola without a licence from Monsanto and that this was a patent infringement. Monsanto had a patent on a gene to make GM canola resistant to the glyphosate herbicide in its formulation Roundup. This came as a complete surprise to the Schmeisers who immediately realised that all their research and development on canola over the past fifty years had been contaminated by Monsanto’s GMOs. They felt that they had a case against Monsanto for liability and the damages possibly caused to them, and that was the beginning of [1] Schmeiser's Battle for the Seed (SiS 19). And 10 years on, the Schmeisers have been invited to London to tell their full story [2].

The Schmeisers stood up to Monsanto’s claims of patent infringement in the Federal Court with just one judge and no jury. The pre-trial took two years to go to court in which Monsanto claimed that despite having no knowledge of Percy Schmeiser ever having obtained any GM seed, he must have used their seed on his 1 030 acres of land because ninety- eight percent of the land was GM contaminated. And, because the Schmeisers had contaminated their own seed supply with Monsanto seed, ownership of the Schmeisers seed supply reverted to Monsanto under patent law.

The American Experiment

“He who wishes”

Liberty & Power
by Charles W. Nuckolls

04/05/09

In modern democracies freedom is usually construed as freedom from contraint by others. The same was true in ancient Athens, the opinions of Plato and Aristotle notwithstanding. However, the Athenians believed that preserving freedom depended on the fulfillment of civic responsilbiities. Freedom, in other words, was both a prequisite and a product of citizenship. But why is the citizen motivated to participation? This is something I would consider essential to preserving democracy and preventing the rise of an entrenched elite. Citizens must take the initiative. But we find less and less of that today, especially in the universities, which have become holding pens for inert and essentially passive consumers-in-training...

The history of the American Experiment in self government has always been viewed as a battle between dichotomous ideas struggling for supremacy over the other … federalist vs. anti-federalist; conservative vs. liberal; republican vs. democrat; urban vs. agrarian; north vs. south; east vs. west; central government vs. states rights; freedom vs. security; black vs. white; rich vs. poor; business vs. labor; educated vs. uneducated; interventionist vs. isolationist; inheritor vs. usurper; patriot vs. traitor; traditionalist vs revisionist; living constitution vs. original intent; hawk vs. dove; defender vs. apologist; secrecy vs. transparency; communist vs capitalist; church vs. state; chaos vs. order; good vs. evil; us vs. them; you vs. me. It is a mindset that can be expressed in the idea that ‘those who are not with us are against us and those who are against us are our enemies’. The history of the American Experiment has been seen as a polarized conflict between opposing forces but, what America has never been good at is recognizing nuance, shades of grey, middle ground or balance...

The two faces of Barack Obama

Like Americans, the Europeans want to believe — but they see the two faces of Barack Obama too clearly, and the contrast is too apparent to be denied. The gullible Americans, who take things at face value, still believe their new president represents a real change, a challenge to the status quo, while the more sophisticated Europeans are quick to pick up on Obama’s inconsistencies — made all the more glaring by his habit of pairing two mutually contradictory stances on the same issue. This includes not only coupling missile ‘defense’ in Eastern Europe with the prospect of a nuclear-free world, but also the recent launching of his ‘Af-Pak’ initiative. Although dressed up as a diplomatic offensive, this is essentially a military offensive aimed at widening the war in Afghanistan to include portions of Pakistan...

Big Brother row as police force starts using Google camera cars to fine wayward drivers

By Jaya Narain

Last updated at 3:17 PM on 05th April 2009

It is the latest symbol of Big Brother technology - a tiny Smart car fitted with a spy camera on a mast.

The cars are being used by police in the UK for the very first time to combat drivers who flout the law.

They will be able to zoom in and catch drivers talking on their mobile phones, eating, applying make-up or driving illegally.

The Dollar is Gonna Drop Like a Stone

Beyond the dollar

People's Bank of China governor Zhou Xiaochuan said last week that the Special Drawing Rights (SDR) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should replace the dollar as the world's main currency.

The political reasons for his proposal are clear, its merits rather less so.

There is no serious attempt to limit US military spending

Chomsky: NATO should immediately disband

"In reality there is little sign of change. You may have noticed that despite the financial crisis there is no serious attempt to limit US military spending since (Barack) Obama became president," he said.

Crusade Against the Oligarchs of Wall Street

By Andrew Leonard

The United States is unwilling to take the same harsh medicine it would prescribe to a developing nation that exhibited the same critical problem: domination of the political process by self-interested economic elites.

The Quiet Coup

By Simon Johnson

The conventional wisdom among the elite is still that the current slump "cannot be as bad as the Great Depression." This view is wrong. What we face now could, in fact, be worse than the Great Depression'.

Another 663,000 Jobs Lost in March

Girding for a Depression

By PETER MORICI

Regressive Hypocrisy Again

The Best Way To Rob A Bank Is To Own One

By Bill Moyers & William K. Black

Video - Audio and Transcript

The financial industry brought the economy to its knees, but how did they get away with it? With the nation wondering how to hold the bankers accountable, Bill Moyers sits down with William K. Black, the former senior regulator who cracked down on banks during the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s. Black offers his analysis of what went wrong and his critique of the bailout.

Obama and Afghanistan

Disdain and indifference are the twin hallmarks of American diplomacy.

By A.G. Noorani

What is it that emboldened Obama to think that he would hit upon a cure for the ills in Kabul in record speed? The recipe prescribed in the speech does not reckon with the one fundamental issues that lies at the root of the problem - the presence of foreign troops on Afghan soil.

Sudan/Darfur is Test Case for Obama's "Humanitarian" Aggression

By Glen Ford

When imperial doctrine claims the right to intervene whenever disasters overtake sovereign countries - and proceeds to create and exacerbate those disasters - then no government is safe against regime change. President Obama "appears to be fine-tuning a 'humanitarian' interventionist doctrine that is applicable to any point on the planet."

It was Never about Democracy

By Mamoon Alabbasi

American foreign policy has always backed Arab dictators to remain in power and oppress their own people. These 'puppet presidents' or 'drag-queen kings' are kept in power - with US weapons and intelligence - for as long as they continue to serve American interests, not those of their own peoples.

The Pentagon Minerva Research Initiative

By James Petras

The Pentagon's military strategists have recognized that they have suffered political losses, with strategic consequences in their recent military invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. US military support for the Israeli invasions of Lebanon and Gaza, the US-sponsored Ethiopian occupation of Somali, the coup attempts in Venezuela (2002) and Bolivia (2008), have also failed to defeat popular incumbent regimes. Worse still, civilian, family, community and national networks have reinforced the anti-colonial movements providing essential logistical support, intelligence, recruits and legitimacy.

Gleichzeitig will die Bundesregierung weiterhin „Maß halten“. Dennoch tut sie, was in ihren Kräften steht, um alle Banken zu retten. In diesem Punkt sind die CDU-Kanzlerin und der SPD-Kanzlerkandidat völlig einer Meinung. Aber, so muss einmal gefragt werden, ist wirklich jede Bank systemrelevant?...“ Artikel von Hermannus Pfeiffer in Bläter für deutsche und internationale Politik Ausgabe 04/2009 http://www.blaetter.de/artikel.php?pr=3044
