WEST Dorset MP Oliver Letwin is backing worried Lyme residents in their fight to stop plans for a new mobile phone mast close to homes, businesses and a school.

The O2 transmitter is planned for a derelict piece of land on Lyme Regis Industrial Estate to improve network coverage in the area.

Nearby residents have launched a Fight the Mast campaign and sent a petition with 60 signatures to planning authority West Dorset District Council. MP Oliver Letwin has added his voice to the campaign and last week met with senior management at the district council, a meeting he said left him ‘quite optimistic about the outcome’.

Mr Letwin said: “Of course, this is all very difficult – because we all want to be able to use our mobile phones, and none of us wants a mobile mast anywhere near us. A careful balance, therefore, has to be struck.

“But it never fails to amaze me how much chutzpah the operators of these systems have.

They are the deficits that Obama has proposed, resulting from the $1 trillion in increased spending he adopted in the no-stimulus stimulus bill, and the $400 billion supplemental spending bill he supported and also adopted the following week, and the $275 billion housing bailout he proposed the next week, and the $1 trillion bank bailout plan his Treasury Secretary just proposed this week, and the $638 billion he has proposed as a ‘downpayment’ on a new national health insurance entitlement. … Does this sound like he is ‘doing everything we can to reduce that deficit?

He said he needed time to get angry ‘because I like to know what I’m talking about before I speak.’ When Obama finally got mad, he got mad at Wall Street. But he knows who else deserves the cold shoulder. The list of bonus conspirators includes his own economic team, which is headed by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. The controversial AIG contracts, which provide for so-called retention bonuses, were written in March 2008. I’m trying to be as understanding of other points of view. Many people do have good intentions and are just lacking facts and don’t think things through. They know the economic system really is rigged against the masses. They really do want to protect the children. They really are afraid of terrorism. They go on to advocate policies that will exacerbate rather than alleviate their concerns, but their concerns are understandable. But there are some causes where I just don’t see any ‘good intentions’ at all. The more BB’s there are out there, the less the remaining dollars are worth. It is called ‘monetizing the debt.’ Or to pick up on Keyne’s point, we’re right in the middle of debauching our currency. Now, there are several reasons for doing what is being done, and you may or may not agree with them. But it really doesn’t matter. The top US ground commander in Iraq says that while Iraqi forces have made huge strides, Iraqi officials are likely to ask for US help in the key cities of Baquba and Mosul, meaning that American troops may stay there after the deadline for redeployment to major bases. PARENTS have united against plans for a new mobile phone mast near a village primary school.

The application to replace the existing antennas at Forest Row Fire Station is being opposed by villagers concerned with alleged health risks associated with the structures.

But, according to the applicant - telecommunications giants T-Mobile and 3 UK Ltd - there are no proven dangers from the masts.

Dozens of parents and pupils of Forest Row Primary School gathered in the village on Monday to protest.

They were joined by Wealden District Councillor Vania Phitidis, who is wary of the restrictions in objecting to the plans.

"We are only really allowed to object on planning considerations and not on health considerations and I think that's unfair and unjust," she said. "We are between a rock and a hard place.

THE two mobile phone giants who have permission for new masts after council blunders are reviewing their options.

Harrow Council made a double gaffe when failing to tell Orange and Vodafone that their applications for the masts had been turned down.

The officers missed a 56-day deadline for informing applicants, meaning permission was granted by default, to the fury and dismay of residents living close to the two sites.

As a result, Vodafone can erect a 12.4m high phone mast in St Thomas Drive, Hatch End, and Orange have the right to put up an 11.5m high mast on a small patch of grass at the junction of Rayners Lane and Grove Road.
