Gulf War Illnesses Debate Rages On

Thomas D. Williams, Truthout: "Barack Obama is now the fourth president facing the scientific and bureaucratic conundrum gyrating around mostly US created ongoing wartime hazards producing disastrous health complications for soldiers and civilians. Many of those sicknesses are known as the allegedly 'mysterious Gulf War syndrome,' but they carry over to haunt soldiers and civilians in Kuwait and Afghanistan."

When did the American government begin building FEMA camps and what exactly is their purpose?

We Have Seen the Enemy...

When did political dissent become a reason to end up grounded at an airport because you found out at a most inconvenient time that your name had been mysteriously added to a "no-fly list"? When did the American government begin building FEMA camps and what exactly is their purpose? When did Congress become the rubber stamp for policies of reading the correspondence and listening in on the conversations of the American public?

Legislation to Establish Internment Camps on US Military Bases

By Michel Chossudovsky

Obama's populist rhetoric conceals the true nature of macro-economic policy. Acting on behalf of Wall Street, the administration's economic package, which includes close to a trillion dollar "aid" package for the financial services industry, coupled with massive austerity measures, contributes to precipitating America into a bottomless crisis.

Restoring our Financial Sovereignty

A New Monetary System

By Nikki Alexander

Today the nation is essentially bankrupt and hoping Barack Obama's team of Wall Street advisors will forestall economic collapse. This expectation is equivalent to hoping that Al Capone will make our streets safe. Obama's economic recovery team is a Trojan horse filled with the same Wall Street racketeers that infected the global economy with a quadrillion dollar derivatives bubble, using deliberately deregulated mechanisms.

The "Card Check" Hullabaloo

By Mike Whitney

Big business has launched a no-holds-barred propaganda blitz against the Employee Free Choice Act. Their goal is to scare people into believing that if the bill passes it will trigger higher unemployment and a deeper recession. According to opponents, there's even the threat of creeping socialism. The truth, of course, is far less dramatic. The Employee Free Choice Act or so called "card check" simply makes it easier for unions to organize.

Register Nelson's meeting spot to get 41ft mast

19 March 2009

By Ruth Scammell

Plans for a phone mast at a site where Nelson is rumoured to have met his lover for romantic trysts have been given the green light. Councillors yesterday allowed mobile phone giant O2 to put a mast up in the garden of Town Quay House in Gosport Road, Fareham.

Lady Hamilton is believed to have once lived at the house, and she is also said to have looked out across Fareham Creek for the mast of Nelson's ship when he returned.

But residents have raised concerns over the appearance of the 41ft mast, and the health risks from radiation waves.

Councillor Dennis Steadman said: 'I'm very disappointed. It's going to be so intrusive for people who live there.

The biting winds of change are blowing through Obama Nation

This is the Army, Mrs. Jones!

The biting winds of change are blowing through ObamaNation. The same ‘volunteerism’ that kept America running since the days of its founding, wiped out with the stroke of a pen, will no longer be volunteerism. It becomes forced labor and like the practice of another era, presses American citizens of all ages and creeds, unknowingly into military service. On paper, H.R. 1388 is the ‘Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act;’ the more innocuous sounding ‘The Give Act,’ for short. But ‘The Give Act’ is not part of Obama’s distant future for unsuspecting American citizens, because it hits the House floor tomorrow. … ‘The Give Act’ puts tow-headed school children and silver-haired seniors in the official uniform of the new State, and encompasses every walk of life in main-street America...

Perp walks, not bonuses

The Nation

There must be a criminal investigation of the AIG debacle, and it looks as if New York’s top lawman is on the case. The collusion to save this toxic company in order to salvage the rogue financiers who conspired to enrich themselves by impoverishing millions is being revealed as the greatest financial scandal in US history. Instead of taking bonuses, the culprits should be taking perp walks. I’m not just referring to the swindlers in the Financial Products Subsidiary of AIG who devised and sold those insurance policies on derivatives that brought the world economy to its knees. They do seem deserving of a special place in h..., and presumably the same divine power that according to Scripture labeled usury a high moral crime and threw the money-changers out of the temple will consider that outcome...

Government could’ve easily prevented AIG bonuses

Fox News Forum

by Ken Klukowski

03/18/09

The debacle over the AIG bonuses proves that opponents of the bailouts were on to something. There are at least three ways the federal government could have avoided this debacle, and now taxpayers are stuck with the bill. Insurance giant AIG is paying $165 million in performance bonuses (a stunning thought, given the circumstances). AIG says that these are legally binding contracts, so it has no choice but to pay them. Since AIG is living off government money right now, these bonuses are really being paid directly by American taxpayers. The reaction from our leaders in D.C. has been to howl in protest, and then suggest this could not have been prevented. Wrong. First, if AIG had been forced into bankruptcy, this latest outrage would not have happened...

The real AIG conspiracy

CounterPunch
by Michael Hudson

03/18/09

Regarding qui bono, what does Sen. Schumer, Rep. Frank, Pres. Obama and other Wall Street sponsors gain from this public outcry? For starters, it depicts them as hard taskmasters of the banking and financial sector, not its lobbyists scurrying to execute one giveaway after another. So the AIG kerfuffle has muddied the water about where their political loyalties really lie. It enables them to strike a misleading pose — and hence to pose as ‘honest brokers’ next time they dishonestly give away the next few trillion dollars to their major sponsors and campaign contributors...

AIG: Sinking money in a hole

Economics Junkie

It’s time for our dear politicians to act surprised again. It’s time for Congress again to complain about the results of false policies that they themselves recklessly approved, against all warnings. It’s time again for Ben Bernanke to fire off mindless blather, platitudes and predictions that will, as always and without exception, turn out to be abysmally false. The AP has a shocking surprise for us, Taxpayers unlikely to be fully repaid in AIG mess …. Of course the taxpayer won’t get any of this money back. Is there a living creature with more than one brain cell that seriously expected the taxpayer would ever see this money come back?

How the scam works

CounterPunch
by Michael Hudson

03/29/09

Newspaper reports seem surprised at how high banks are bidding for the junk mortgages that Treasury Secretary Geithner is now bidding for, having mobilized the FDIC and Fed to transfer yet more public funds to the banks. Bank stocks are soaring — thereby bidding up the Dow Jones Industrial Average, as if the ‘financial industry’ really were part of the industrial economy. Why are the very worst offenders — Bank of America (now owner of the Countrywide crooks) and Citibank the largest buyers? As the worst abusers and packagers of CDOs, shouldn’t they be in the best position to see how worthless their junk mortgages are?

Statt Populismus gegen Ost-Rentner: armutsfeste Mindestsicherung im Alter

Health fear over phone-mast bid

Published Date: 18 March 2009

By Richard Marsden

A MOBILE phone mast planned for woodland on the outskirts of Sheffield has provoked fury - with 160 people signing a petition and protesters voicing fears for health.

Vodafone has applied to Sheffield Council for permission to erect the 12 metre tower, which would be 14.4 metres high with three antennae attached.

If approved, it would be built within trees, behind houses off Bowman Drive, Charnock Hall, above the Moss Valley conservation area. Signatures on the protest petition were collected by Kevin Pryor, of Bowman Drive, Moss Valley Wildlife Group, who said he opposed the idea of such a development on green space and recreational land.

Three letters of objection have also been made, including one from Moss Valley Wildlife Group.

Education About Toxic Vaccines is Sweeping the Nation

by Mary Tocco

Public awareness about problems associated with childhood vaccines is paramount. Concern is spreading like wild-fire. Parents across the country are not just going with the flow; they are questioning the issues of safety, efficacy and lack of long-term studies that the medical community continues to ignore. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, within a 12- month period, 85% of pediatricians encountered a parent who refused or delayed one or more vaccines and 54% encountered a parent who refused all vaccines........

Stimulating ourselves to death

Crisis coddling

Fairfield County Weekly
by Phil Maymin

Despite rising unemployment, massive layoffs and a stock market that has lost half of its value from its peak, we are not in a crisis. There is no banking crisis, no financial crisis, no economic crisis. Why not? Because we have no decision to make. A bad situation is only a crisis if making the wrong decision can be fatal, and there is a chance of making the right one. Surely, a recession is a bad situation, but where is the debate about possible decisions? There can be no crisis without even a possibility of massively shrinking government. Who is proposing less government involvement? Who is pointing out that the problems were caused by too much government, too many regulations, too burdensome taxes, too powerful federal agencies? We are seeing more of the same... (for publication 03/19/09)

Stimulating ourselves to death

Reason
by Veronique de Rugy

Barack Obama says his ‘unprecedented’ economic stimulus package will not merely be ‘a short-term program to boost employment.’ No, it ‘will invest in our most important priorities like energy and education; health care; and a new infrastructure that are necessary to keep us strong and competitive in the 21st century.’ The massive cost of the stimulus doubled even before any legislation was written, much less approved. Originally tagged at $400 billion, the proposal quickly jumped to $825 billion, and latest estimates at press time have it costing north of $1 trillion (comprised of 60 percent spending and 40 percent tax cuts). Given the size, will the stimulus work as advertised? Will the goods and services — be they concrete for new highway projects or groceries for hungry families — pump up flagging demand and boost stalled economic activity? If so, it will be the first time in modern recorded history... (for publication 04/09)

In defense of distrust in government

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

03/17/09

President Barack Obama declared in his inaugural address that ‘our patchwork heritage is a strength’ because people of all backgrounds and creeds had come together to make America great. But there was one group, Obama suggested, that wasn’t quite welcome in the American family: the ‘cynics,’ those miserable killjoys who dare to ‘question the scale of [the federal government’s] ambitions.’ There, Obama echoed his 2008 opponent, John McCain, who has repeatedly warned that there’s a specter haunting our country, in the form of a ‘pervasive public cynicism’ toward government. ‘Cynicism’ is a scare word, meant to discredit those who cast a skeptical eye on politicians’ grand designs. But Obama and McCain are right that distrust of government is on the rise...

Let freedom do it

Freedom Politics
by Steven Greenhut

03/16/09

Those of us who advocate freedom and capitalism run up against a difficult problem. Even though these ideas, hampered as they have always been by government intervention, have led to all the good things people say they want (wealth, justice, progress, personal liberty, etc.), they haven’t got a prayer against the grandiose promises of those who prefer the alternate route of command and control. Government promises to protect us, feed us, comfort us, instruct us and make life fair. Freedom promises nothing more than the ability to pursue one’s dreams as one chooses. There’s no promise of utopia in such a system, but the results of leaving people free to their own devices tend to be pretty good, on balance. The utopian systems are the ones where you find the concentration camps and dungeons, despite the flowery rhetoric...

Obama surrounded by Bilderbergers

Politico
by Kenneth Vogel

03/15/09

The highest levels of the Obama administration are infested with members of a shadowy, elitist cabal intent on installing a one-world government that subverts the will of the American people. It sounds crazy, but that’s what a group of very persistent conspiracy theorists insists, and they point to President Obama’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, as the latest piece of evidence supporting their claims...

Peaceful dissent and government witch hunts

Campaign For Liberty
by Anthony Gregory

[T]he flavor of government has changed from the Republican leviathan of George W. Bush to the Democratic leviathan of Barack Hussein Obama. A different group is vulnerable to being marginalized — in many ways a revitalization of the Clinton era atmosphere, although now with the post-9/11 concern about peace activists and all the surveillance powers inaugurated by Bush still in place. But the general substance behind government fear-mongering and witch-hunts, and the attempts to chill dissent and silence peaceful political critics, have continued and have a long history. For the last century especially, we have seen the government lump together violent and in many cases unsavory agitators on both the left and right with Americans who simply question unlimited government, nationalist police powers and disastrous foreign wars. While there are indeed some violent and crazed elements on the fringes of the right and left — while there are likewise some extremist characters and frightening viewpoints in the mainstream of American politics, too — the result of such government persecution of dissenters is always to marginalize everyday citizens with unpopular views, conflate thoughtful and principled criticism of the government with agitation for social unrest and violence, and jeopardize the civil liberties of all Americans...

The nobodies known as former enemy combatants

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Andy Worthington

03/17/09

Changing the names of things was a ploy that was used by the Bush administration in an attempt to justify some of its least palatable activities. In response to the 9/11 attacks, for instance, the nation was not involved in a limited pursuit of a group of criminals responsible for the attacks, but instead embarked on an open-ended ‘war on terror.’ In keeping with this ‘new paradigm,’ prisoners seized in this ‘war’ were referred to as ‘detainees’ and held neither as criminal suspects nor as prisoners of war, protected by the Geneva Conventions, but as illegal ‘enemy combatants,’ without any rights whatsoever...

Hypocritical posturing by Obama over AIG bonuses

OpenMarket.org
by Hans Bader

In response to public outrage, Obama is belatedly criticizing the millions of dollars in bonuses that AIG, which is being bailed by taxpayers at a cost of $170 billion, is paying to its executives. But his criticism is hypocritical and dishonest, both because his administration had long known about the bonuses before they became public, and because the stimulus package he himself signed contains a provision specifically designed to shield those undeserved bonuses...

The promotional literature for the conference opened with That Quotation from Alan Greenspan — the one in which he suggested that there was, after all, a ‘flaw’ in the free market he hadn’t noticed before...

Crocodile tears over AIG

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

03/20/09

If politicians spill any more crocodile tears over AIG , the EPA might have to declare Washington, D.C. a protected wetland. Sweep aside the phony expressions of ‘outrage’ over AIG’s government-financed $165 million in bonuses (the information was in black and white) and ask yourself this: Who supplied the money?

Outcry Builds in Washington for Recovery of A.I.G. Bonuses

Jackie Calmes And Louise Story, The New York Times: "The American International Group, which has received nearly $200 billion in bailout funds, last week paid bonuses to 418 employees, including $33.6 million to 52 people who have left the failed insurance conglomerate, according to the office of the New York attorney general. The company paid the bonuses, including more than $1 million each to 73 people, to almost all of the employees in the financial products unit responsible for creating the exotic derivatives that caused A.I.G.'s near collapse and started the government rescue to avoid a global financial crisis. The information adds to the firestorm confronting the Obama administration and Congress since the weekend disclosure that A.I.G., almost 80 percent owned by the government, paid out $165 million in bonuses."

http://www.truthout.org/031809K

Venality Bites

Brian E. Gray, Truthout: "The Obama administration's assertion that the federal government had no power to stop A.I.G. from awarding $165 million in bonuses to the derivatives traders in its financial products unit, whose reckless decisions both destroyed the company and exacerbated the collapse of the international banking and insurance industries, rests on a faulty interpretation of the US Constitution. Speaking on ABC's 'This Week,' Lawrence H. Summers, director of the National Economic Council, explained that the United States could not block payment of the bonuses, despite A.I.G.'s receipt of more than $170 billion in federal TARP funds, because 'We are a country of law. There are contracts. The government cannot just abrogate contracts.' Although, it is true that the 'government cannot just abrogate contracts' for no good reason, the law is clear that the United States has the authority to impose significant restrictions on the administration of both public and private contracts to ensure that the expenditure of federal funds is consistent with the public interest. Although, it is too late to void the A.I.G. bonuses, the administration's narrow reading of the law should not deter Congress from amending the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of October 2008, the legislation that created TARP, to authorize the president or the secretary of the treasury to modify executive compensation agreements that are contrary to the purposes of the Act."

Reports of sexual assault in military rise in 2008

CNN

03/17/09

Reports of sexual assault among U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan rose 26 percent from the previous year, according to an annual Pentagon report presented to Congress on Tuesday. Among all active duty U.S. military troops, the Pentagon showed an increase of about 8 percent in sexual assault reports from the previous year. Dr. Kaye Whitley, director of the Pentagon’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office, told reporters she attributes the increases to improved reporting methods and officials’ belief that military personnel are less fearful of backlash from commanders and peers after reporting an assault...

Elderly residents take to streets to protest at mobile phone mast

Wednesday, March 18, 2009, 00:00

CONCERNED elderly people marched through St Austell to deliver a petition to Restormel in protest against a mobile phone mast 100 metres from their retirement village.

A 30-strong contingent of the Buckler's Village Residents' Association were on Tuesday fighting for a voice in a private meeting about the O2 mast near Wheal Northey.

An official complaint about the mast made to the Ombudsman at Restormel by the Bethel Mast Action Group was being discussed by councillors and officers who will decide if any action should be taken.

Resident association secretary, Frank Boulton, 69, said: "The mast is only 100 metres from our homes and people have been ill since it has been there over the past three years.
