Fears over phone mast proposal

5:54pm Thursday 5th March 2009

AN electronics firm wants to build a 42ft mobile phone mast next to one of Romsey’s largest residential areas.

Plans are in the pipeline to construct a Vodafone base station on land at the corner of Braishfield Road and Winchester Road, backing on to the Great Woodley estate.

But the scheme, outlined by Tyco Electronics, has already been given a lukewarm reception by Romsey Town Council.

After discussing the matter at their planning committee, councillors decided to write to the company warning that residents may have health fears.

Theft is still theft, even by government

Freedom's Phoenix
by Barry Hess

Things have certainly changed in the last year or two. Somehow, the part of the economy that is felt in the pocketbooks of average Citizens has gone from super-heated and ever-expanding, to ice-cold and losing ground — at about the same incredible rate. I’m not ignoring the toll all this is taking on most Americans, but I find that interesting, don’t you? Acting in your ‘best interest,’ of course, Congress, the Senate and the latest Messiah decided to ‘borrow’ $1 Trillion dollars that hasn’t even been earned yet. Now there’s a trick. Even better than that, YOU get to be obligated (along with your children and theirs) to ‘pay it back’ to somebody that never loaned it to ‘us’ in the first place...

Let those banks fail!

Independent Institute
by Alvaro Vargas Llosa

03/04/09

In January alone, the annual rate of saving in the U.S. was the highest since monthly records began in 1959. That should be a reason to rejoice. Of course, businesses need credit and customers. But there are two ways to get them. One is by bailing out and then nationalizing the banks — and paying a catastrophic price. The other is by letting the financial system purge itself of failed assets and giving consumers a bit of time to replenish their coffers. Few things give a worse name to the free-enterprise system than offloading bank losses onto taxpayers. The way to solve this crisis is to let ‘zombie’ banks proceed to their beyond, allowing those banks that need restructuring to start doing just that while those in a position to fill the space left by failed institutions can jump in quickly. After all, a majority of the almost 9,000 U.S. banks, including regional institutions, did not engage in credit hanky-panky and would love a chance to increase their market share...

Rove, Miers to testify in prosecutor firings

ABC News

03/04/09

Former top Bush aides Karl Rove and Harriet Miers agreed Wednesday to testify before Congress under oath about the firings of U.S. attorneys, a controversy involving allegations of political interference that grew into a constitutional standoff between two branches of government. The Bush White House had fought attempts to force Rove and Miers to testify, and the agreement — steered by aides to President Barack Obama — ended that dispute...

Conyers Cuts a Deal With Rove, Miers

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "The House Judiciary Committee cut a deal with lawyers for George W. Bush that will see his former aides Karl Rove and Harriet Miers testify in Congress's long-running investigation into the firings of nine US attorneys in December 2006. But their testimony, at least for the time being, will not be conducted publicly. Democrats in Congress have been seeking testimony from Miers and Rove about the Bush administration's firing of nine US attorneys in 2006. To stymie the investigation, Bush barred the witnesses from cooperating and asserted a broad claim of executive privilege."

When Securitization Blew Up, So Did the Economy

By Mike Whitney

One thing is certain, this isn't a normal recession. In a normal recession aggregate demand declines, economic activity slows, and GDP shrinks. While those things are taking place now, the reasons are quite different. The present slump wasn't brought on by a downturn in the business cycle or a mismatch in supply and demand. It was caused by a meltdown in the credit system's central core.

A bank robber does not gain legal possession of his loot. Neither should today's "robber barons," notwithstanding the fact that the theft was accomplished under the guise of quasi-legality.

Hilditch: NI Water should listen to residents

Published Date: 05 March 2009

A COUNCILLOR concerned about the expansion of mobile telephone infrastructure says publicly owned bodies that lease land to operators should be challenged.

Alderman David Hilditch has also expressed disappointment that planners, who had been asked to reconsider their original decision to grant permission for a Vodafone base station close to the North Road, do not appear to have taken on board objections raised by local residents.

Prosecuting the Bush Team?

Robert Pallitto, Foreign Policy In Focus: "In the months following September 11, 2001, lawyers in the White House and the Justice Department interpreted US and international law to provide legal support for the administration in its 'war on terror.' With regard to interrogation of terror suspects, John Yoo, David Addington, Jay Bybee, and others justified the use of such harsh and dangerous tactics as waterboarding and stress positions. In a 2002 memo, they advised that only actions causing severe pain equivalent to 'organ failure' would violate the US torture law. Moreover, the memo stated that only if they acted with the specific intention to cause such pain - rather than acting with the primary goal of obtaining information - would the interrogators violate the law. Finally, the memo argued that these interrogations were rooted in an inherent executive power to protect the nation. As such, other branches of government could not review or limit such policies."

http://www.truthout.org/030409K

Declassified Memos Provide Look Into Bush Policies

Ari Shapiro, NPR News: "The Obama administration declassified nine Justice Department legal memos on Monday that asserted a sweeping view of presidential power, including authorizing the military to search Americans' homes without a warrant and sending detainees to other countries regardless of congressional statutes that might dictate otherwise. Now civil liberties groups are pushing for the release of dozens of similar memos that remain classified. About a month ago, the American Civil Liberties Union sent the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel a letter and a chart. The chart listed 55 classified Bush administration legal memos on national security issues. The letter basically said, 'release these memos.'"

http://www.truthout.org/030409L

Memos Provide Blueprint for Police State

Marjorie Cohn, Truthout: "Seven newly released memos from the Bush Justice Department reveal a concerted strategy to cloak the president with power to override the Constitution. The memos provide 'legal' rationales for the president to suspend freedom of speech and press; order warrantless searches and seizures, including wiretaps of US citizens; lock up US citizens indefinitely in the United States without criminal charges; send suspected terrorists to other countries where they will likely be tortured; and unilaterally abrogate treaties."

Bush Memos on Presidential Power Shock Legal Experts

David G. Savage, The Chicago Tribune: "Legal experts said Tuesday they were taken aback by the claim in the latest batch of secret Bush-era memos that the president alone had the power to set the rules during the war on terrorism. Yale law professor Jack Balkin called this a 'theory of presidential dictatorship. They say the battlefield is everywhere. And the president can do anything he wants, so long as it involves the military and the enemy.' The criticism was not limited to liberals. 'I agree with the left on this one,' said Orin Kerr, a law professor at George Washington University. The approach in the memos 'was simply not a plausible reading of the case law. The Bush [Office of Legal Counsel] eventually rejected [the] memos because they were wrong on the law, and they were right to do so.'"

Constitutional Scholar Calls Bush Torture Memos Treason

Naomi Wolf, AlterNet: "In early March, more shocking details emerged about George W. Bush legal counsel John Yoo's memos outlining the destruction of the republic. The memos lay the legal groundwork for the president to send the military to wage war against US citizens; take them from their homes to Navy brigs without trial and keep them forever; close down the First Amendment; and invade whatever country he chooses without regard to any treaty or objection by Congress."

The last "boom" of the economy was based not only on fantasy prices for homes, but the cheap price of labor. During the boom the working class resorted to ever-more debt to maintain their standard of living, while the rich got richer than anyone had ever dreamed possible.

Finding ways to stay in Iraq

AntiWar.Com
by Scott Horton

03/04/09

Those who bought into the slogans ‘Hope’ and ‘Change’ last fall should have read the fine print. We were warned. Over and over during the campaign for the presidency Barack Obama made it clear that ‘withdrawal’ from Iraq on his flexible 16-month timetable meant only the removal of ‘combat forces.’ He has also made it clear all along that ‘combat forces’ means whatever he wants it to mean — until he decides to change his mind. At least he’s honest...

They Done Us Wrong: Spending Our Way Into Greater Depression

http://www.lewrockwell.com/rozeff/rozeff277.html

--------

The second Great Depression

The Nation
by Nicholas von Hoffman

03/03/09

The pause morphed into the correction, which got transmogrified into the drop in business, which shifted into the crash. The crash became the slump, which changed into the downturn and/or the slide, or the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Scarier yet, President Barack Obama is now warning us that unless his rescue plan goes through, ‘our economic crisis could become a national catastrophe.’ What say you to that, sports fans? Many are starting to say it looks as though we are heading into — or are already in–another Great Depression But what might a depression be? Although the word has been used in connection with bad economic conditions since the late eighteenth century, there is no agreed-upon definition comparable to what economists have for the word ‘recession.’ There is agreement on one thing: a depression is a helluva lot worse then a recession. It means not just hard times, but very, very hard times lasting a very, very long time. Two, three, four, eight years. You might say a depression is an extended national catastrophe...

The market’s harsh verdict on Obamanomics

Christian Science Monitor
by Mark Skousen

03/04/09

Officially, President Obama’s $3.6 trillion budget is titled ‘A New Era of Responsibility.’ That’s false on two counts. It’s an era — not of responsibility, but of big-government taxation, spending, and regulation. And it’s not new. History is full of attempts to inflate the state to grow the economy. Virtually all have ended badly. As Monday’s sell-off reminds us, Wall Street’s verdict on Obamanomics has been quick and sharp. The president’s budget is right in castigating the ‘troubled past’ of the Bush administration, which spent money like a drunken sailor on education, healthcare, bailouts and two seemingly endless wars in the greater Middle East, with virtually no regard for how to pay for a rapidly growing national debt. But now we must confront the troubled future. Obama has adopted the big-spending policies of George W. Bush, with trillions more proposed for education, bailouts and healthcare. He wants to sharply reduce (but not end) the American presence in Iraq. At the same time, he plans to deploy an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan, which may lead to an expanded quagmire there...

Staving Off Another Great Depression

Dean Baker, Truthout: "The Washington policy debates of the last week would almost make a casual observer believe that the nation's political leadership is in fact nostalgic for the good old days of the Great Depression when the country suffered double-digit unemployment for a decade. The two big news items last week were a batch of absolutely horrible economic reports and the release of President Barack Obama's budget. The media almost completely ignored the former and focused its attention primarily on the latter. So, let's start with the bad news."

The Costs of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Lawrence J. Korb, The Center for American Progress: "Since 1994, the military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy has resulted in the discharge of more than 13,000 military personnel across the services, including approximately 800 with skills deemed 'mission critical,' such as pilots, combat engineers, and linguists. These are the very specialties for which the military has faced personnel shortfalls in recent years."
