Judge Questions Law Giving Telecoms Immunity

Bob Egelko, The San Francisco Chronicle: "A federal judge in San Francisco is raising questions about the constitutionality of a law designed to dismiss suits against telecommunications companies accused of cooperating with government wiretapping. Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker has asked President Obama's Justice Department to present its views by Wednesday on whether the law gives the attorney general too much power to decide whether a company is immune from lawsuits. Obama supported the measure as a senator when Congress approved it last year."

Fears that stack may be used as phone mast

Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 18:16

NEW fears about the proposed incinerator chimney for St Dennis have come to light.

Residents are not just concerned about pollution – they are now worried about the stack being turned into a giant phone mast.

The matter was discussed by Cornwall County Council on February 10 after concerns were raised that if the incinerator gets the go-ahead, it could encourage plans for mobile phone transmitters attached to the chimney.

Transparent Obama

Free Liberal
by Paul Jacob

02/23/09

President Obama has promised to post legislation online for public viewing before he signs it. However, the very first bill he signed, which expands the right to sue over alleged pay discrimination, was not posted online. An administration spokesman alluded to mysterious difficulties preventing this. Apparently, one is not allowed to be transparent about the obstacles to transparency. Okay, so maybe it just slipped through the cracks. But what more urgent test can there be of the president’s commitment to transparency than the trillion-dollar ’stimulus’ spending package Obama is touting?

On transparency of the Fed

Freedom's Phoenix
by US Rep. Ron Paul

02/23/09

This week the Federal Reserve responded to the American people’s increased concerns over our monetary policy by presenting new initiatives aimed at enhancing the Fed’s transparency and accountability. As someone who has called for more openness from the Fed for over 30 years, I was pleased to see the Fed acknowledge the legitimacy of this need. The Federal Reserve controls the flow of money and credit in our economy because Congress has abdicated its responsibility over the nation’s currency. This process therefore occurs centrally, and almost completely outside the system of checks and balances...

The Waterloo of Keynesianism (military and domestic)

The Hawblog
by David T. Beito

02/20/09

While it is perilous for any historian to predict the future, we may well be headed for the Waterloo of Keynesianism (both military and domestic) and that is a good thing. Crudely put, Keynesianism (so named for the British economist John Maynard Keynes) is the theory that government’s can speed long-term recovery by running high deficts so as to stimulate aggregate demand or investment. It is the entire basis of Obama’s stimulus plan. To some extent, Keynesian ideas were the basis of Bush’s massive bailout and big spending policies, most especially his now forgotten ’stimulus checks.’ The popularity of the Keynesian theory is something a puzzle (at least to me). Few ideas more defy ordinary common sense...

Save the planet? Let’s try saving ourselves

Boston Globe
by John Hagan

02/23/09

We need a game-changing relationship with the planet. Our current relationship is not working, either for us or for the planet. We are on track to heat up the earth 10 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of this century as a result of burning fossil fuels. Drought will prevail in many regions. The rising sea level will displace tens of millions of people around the world. Wars will be fought over water, not oil, because there won’t be any oil. Our current economic crisis will pale in comparison with what we are queuing up for our children. The good news is that it doesn’t have to play out this way. But to avoid this scenario, we need a new paradigm. Global warming is not the issue of our time. Sustainability is the issue...

A warning for Obama on deficits

Boston Globe

02/23/09

Just one week after President Obama signed a stimulus package designed to give a short-term boost to the economy, some of the nation’s top budget analysts plan to deliver a stark warning today at a White House summit that an even more foreboding long-term crisis will unfold unless Obama quickly fixes Social Security, healthcare, the tax code and more. While the $787 billion stimulus plan relies on tax cuts and increased spending, the list of problems to be addressed at the ‘Fiscal Responsibility Summit’ could result in a series of painful political decisions that might eventually include tax increases and cuts in government benefits. And although the stimulus package was passed almost entirely by Democrats, any significant changes on taxes and entitlements are considered unlikely without bipartisan support...

Monsanto's Bt Cotton Kills the Soil as Well as Farmers

ISIS Press Release 23/02/09

Biosafety refers to ensuring that GMO’s do not harm the environment or health.

The soil, its fertility, and the organisms which maintain the fertility of soil are a vital aspect of the environment, especially in the context of food and agricultural production.

A recent scientific study carried out by Navdanya, compared the soil of fields where Bt-cotton had been planted for 3 years with adjoining fields with non GMO cotton or other crops. The region covered included Nagpur, Amravati and Wardha of Vidharbha which accounts for highest GMO cotton planting in India, and the highest rate of farmers suicides (4000 per year).

In 3 years, Bt-cotton has reduced the population of Actinomycetes by 17%. Actinomycetes are vital for breaking down cellulose and creating humus.

Bacteria were reduced by 14%. The total microbial biomass was reduced by 8.9%.

Vital soil beneficial enzymes which make nutrients available to plants have also been drastically reduced. Acid Phosphatase which contributes to uptake of phosphates was reduced by 26.6%. Nitrogenase enzymes which help fix nitrogen were reduced by 22.6%.

At this rate, in a decade of planting with GM cotton, or any GM crop with Bt genes in it, could lead to total destruction of soil organisms, leaving dead soil unable to produce food.

The Economic Outlook: 2012 and Beyond

By Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar

The US government under Bush spent close to one trillion dollars, and now the Obama administration is promising to spend trillions in the years to come to stimulate the economy. With official US debt now close to 11 trillion dollars and climbing fast, the situation is becoming untenable. According to treasurydirect.gov, last year (2008) US government paid $451 billion dollars interest on its debt. Add to this the Medicare and social security obligations and suddenly things look a lot worse than they appear.

One thing we should not overlook when taking in the impact of the current economic situation is that it is both inevitable and invaluable in equal measure. That there was no escaping the consequences we are now facing has been a well known fact among those in the know for many years. If anything, it is amazing that we have staved it off for so long. For this we have the hard working men and women of the real world to thank, who toiled on in the name of pride, dignity and responsibility until the burden of debt simply became to great to bear.

Monday, 23. Februar 2009 | 23:26

GRAHAM DINES

LIBERAL Democrats and Labour in Colchester have hardly covered themselves in glory over the planning application for a 12-metre high mobile phone mast which is to be built near three schools in the suburb of Lexden.

At a development committee meeting on January 22, councillors threw out the proposal from O2, but this was outside the 56-day rule which sets the time by which decisions have to be made once proposals are lodged.

What Every Christian Should Know About The New World Order

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

I am amazed at how ignorant and seemingly unconcerned many of my Christian brethren appear regarding the very real threat to our liberties that a burgeoning New World Order presents. I have previously written two columns on this subject that I trust all my readers will share with their pastors and fellow churchmen (along with others, of course)........

Tough Times in Troubled Towns: America's Municipal Meltdowns

Nick Turse, TomDispatch.com: "When Barack Obama traveled to Elkhart, Indiana, to push his $800 billion economic recovery package two weeks ago, he made the former 'RV capital of the world' a poster-child for the current economic crisis. Over the last year, as the British paper The Independent reported, 'Practically the entire [recreational vehicle] industry has disappeared,' leaving thousands of RV workers in Elkhart and the surrounding area out of work. As Daily Show host Jon Stewart summed the situation up: 'Imagine your main industry combines the slowdown of the auto market with the plunging values in the housing sector.' Unfortunately, the pain in Elkhart is no joke, and it only grew worse recently when local manufacturers Keystone RV Co. and Jayco Inc. announced more than 500 additional job cuts."

Phone mast gets go ahead after council mistake

ANNIE DAVIDSON

A HIGHLY contested mobile phone mast will be built close to three Colchester schools after a council missed a deadline to refuse the application.

Despite a wave of public opposition and planning bosses rejecting the mast, the 12-metre structure is to be built at the junction of Norman Way and Lexden Road.

It has been revealed that Colchester borough councillors missed a deadline to decide the application by two days, leaving residents and councillors “shocked and bitterly disappointed”.

"You can’t sweep unlawful activities under the table"

Salon
by Mark Benjamin

President Obama vowed that ‘the United States will not torture’ only two days into his new administration. But one big question Obama hasn’t answered is whether and how to investigate notorious Bush-era interrogation and detention policies. On Thursday, 18 human rights organizations, former State Department officials and former law enforcement and military leaders asked the president to create a nonpartisan commission to investigate those allegedly abusive detention practices. Retired Maj. Gen. Tony Taguba, who investigated the famed abuses at Abu Ghraib, signed on to the effort. He explained his support in an interview with Salon...

Bill of Rights under fire

CounterPunch
by Paul Craig Roberts

02/22/09

The US Constitution has few friends on the right or the left. During the first eight years of the 21st century, the Republicans mercilessly assaulted civil liberties. … The Bush brownshirt regime revealed itself as lawless, the worst criminal organization in American history. Now we have the Democrats, and the assault on civil liberty continues. President Obama doesn’t want to hold Bush accountable for his crimes and violations of the Constitution, because Obama wants to retain the powers that Bush asserted. Even the practice of kidnapping people and transporting them to foreign countries to be tortured has been retained by President Obama. The civil liberties that Bush stole from us are now in Obama’s pocket...

Watch out for stimulus profiteers

The Nation
by Anthony Shorris

02/21/09

With a slimmed-down but much-needed stimulus package now in place, and with a substantial portion of it still aimed at rebuilding America’s aging infrastructure, we need to act sensibly as well as quickly and dramatically. Unless we ensure the program reflects the realities of the marketplace for construction services, we risk being unable to implement the programs we need, or worse, handing billions of taxpayer dollars over to stimulus profiteers. Spending as much as the additional $150 billion for infrastructure that is included in the new legislation (still well below what is needed for the nation’s aging systems and less than what many economists had hoped for) would still mean a substantial increase in total annual US investment, potentially as much as a one-third hike in activity over the next year. The Congressional Budget Office reports total infrastructure spending as around $400 billion annually...

Here’s the real story behind the Tea Party Protests

DC Examiner
by Mark Tapscott

02/22/09

‘Tea Party’ protests have sprung up in multiple cities across the country since Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed the economic stimulus bill into law as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. As much as I rejoice in the sight of legions of fed-up Americans taking to the streets to protest the central government’s colossal waste of the first fruits of their labors, it is important that people understand that the original Boston Tea Party was neither spontaneous nor a mere lark. The Boston Tea Party was a planned act of insurrection and both the participants and cheering bystanders knew the consequences would be fateful...

Obama’s policy on civil liberties: Bush Lite?

AntiWar.Com
by Ivan Eland

02/21/09

Barack Obama entered the presidency as one of the most rhetorically pro-civil liberties politicians in recent memory. And shortly after taking office, he drew applause from friends of liberty for promulgating executive orders closing Guantánamo and CIA secret prisons, ending CIA torture, suspending kangaroo proceedings at military tribunals, and pledging more openness than the secretive Bush administration. Unfortunately, instead of prosecuting Bush administration officials, including George W. Bush, for violating criminal statutes against torture, illegal wiretapping of Americans, and other misdeeds — thus avoiding the bad precedent of giving a president a free pass on illegal acts — Obama appears ready to vindicate the prior administration’s anti-terrorism program by adopting Bush Lite...

The US and Afghan Tragedy

Khushal Arsala and Stephen Zunes, Foreign Policy in Focus: "One of the first difficult foreign policy decisions of the Obama administration will be what the United States should do about Afghanistan. Escalating the war, as National Security Advisor Jim Jones has been encouraging, will likely make matters worse. At the same time, simply abandoning the country - as the United States did after the overthrow of Afghanistan's Communist government soon after the Soviet withdrawal 20 years ago - would lead to another set of serious problems."
