The Senate Armed Services Committee report concludes that harsh interrogation techniques used by the CIA and the U.S. military were directly adapted from the training techniques used to prepare special forces personnel to resist interrogation by enemies that torture and abuse prisoners...

Gates said here on Thursday that the Pentagon, which plans to send 20,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, was trying to get thousands of the additional combat forces into the country as soon as next spring, a sign of the seriousness of the threat facing the United States against the Taliban. The soldiers were requested by Gen. David D. McKiernan, the top commander in Afghanistan. The first of them, about 3,500 to 4,000 troops from the Third Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum, N.Y., are scheduled to arrive next month."

Pflüger warnt vor Militärmacht EU

Im Vorfeld des EU-Ratsgipfel warnt der EU-Abgeordnete Tobias Pflüger (Linke) vor einer entstehenden "Militärmacht EU". So solle auf dem Gipfel eine "Erklärung zum Ausbau der europäischen Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik (ESVP)" verabschiedet werden, die - so Pflüger - "die schlimmsten Befürchtungen hinsichtlich einer weiteren Militarisierung der EU bestätigt". Die Kombination mit einem Beschluss für ein erneutes Referendum in Irland zum "Lissabon-Vertrag" wäre "gleich ein doppelter Schlag ins Gesicht der irischen Bevölkerung und aller Menschen in der EU, die ihre Hoffnung auf die Entwicklung einer zivilen und demokratischen EU setzen", meint der Europaabgeordnete. Umfragen bezüglich der Motive des Neins der irischen Bevölkerung am 12. Juni 2008 hätten bestätigt, dass die Furcht vor einer noch mehr auf Militärpolitik orientierten EU, von der Irland Teil wäre, zu den zentralen Motiven der breiten Ablehnung gehört habe. Nun solle "der umfangreichste Militarisierungsschub in der Geschichte der EU" in engster Zusammenarbeit mit der NATO eingeleitet werden.

Mit gewissen Zusagen an Irland will die Europäische Union den "Vertrag von Lissabon" retten und diesen mit einjähriger Verspätung möglichst zum Ende 2009 in Kraft setzen. Auf einen solchen Fahrplan will sich der EU-Gipfel in Brüssel verständigen. Damit könnte die EU ab 2010 einen Präsidenten bekommen, einen europäischen Außenminister und das erstmalige Recht eines Landes zum Austritt aus der EU. THE campaign to stop a mobile phone mast being erected just 60 metres from a Ripon primary school gained more support this week, as the city council agreed to oppose the application.

A petition fighting the 47ft mast, which would be near Greystone Community Primary School, has now been signed by around 200 people, while a similar campaign on social networking website Facebook has attracted 124 members.

Ripon City Council had originally made no objections to the scheme, but reversed its decision on Monday, saying it would lobby planners in an attempt to block the proposal.

Hudson - Hudson town officials said they are powerless to stop cell phone operators from erecting towers in the town and have only limited ability to mandate where they can be placed.

The Hudson selectmen were speaking at the Dec. 1 Board of Selectmen's meeting, in response to a query from Mark Calvanese, who said he opposed the placement of cell phone towers in residential neighborhoods.

Calvanese told the selectmen that his son is recovering from leukemia, and the radiation from cell towers could harm his health.

"There's medical evidence that kids recovering from leukemia in an EMF [electromagnetic field] environment have a poor survival rate," Calvanese told the selectmen.

He said he planned to move from his home on Champlain Drive. Calvanese said he is resigned to the tower, but the town should revamp its procedures in the future.

"We need to revamp the wireless overlay district for cell towers," Calvanese said. "Cell towers should not be built in residential neighborhoods."

The prosecution asks for the maximum sentence. Once again, an innocent man is arrested, charged, indicted and convicted with no substantiating evidence except for what prosecutors say they have. All of it is bogus and much classified and withheld from the defense. Witnesses are enlisted to cooperate and proceedings orchestrated to intimidate juries to convict. Justice again is denied. Those accused bear the mark of cain for being Muslim in America at the wrong time - especially if they’re devout, activist, and for some prominent and engaged in charitable work...

For the Left, that means projecting shopworn themes under the guise of thoughtfully pondering the purpose of the jihadists’ procedural maneuvering. Is KSM scheming to challenge our new president’s redoubling of Islamic outreach? Is he daring Obama to kick off the promised era of good feeling by executing Muslims, even as the new administration backpedals from campaign commitments to shut down Gitmo and withdraw from Iraq forthwith? Or is he, as the ACLU speculated for the New York Times, trying to draw attention to the asserted folly of abandoning the 1990’s model of civilian terrorist trials in favor of ‘a failed commission process?’ Yes, it’s the silly season. COUNCIL chiefs are being urged to allow more public debate on mobile phone masts as opposition mounts to a controversial plan to site a station less than 100 metres from two schools.

Communications giant Telefonica 02 wants to build a 15-metres mast comprising three antennae on Staffordshire County Council-owned land next to the Beacon Hotel, at the junction of Tutbury Road and Harehedge Lane, Outwoods.

The company says the mast is needed to improve coverage for new generation 3G mobile phones, but the plans, currently being considered by East Staffordshire Borough Council, have provoked fierce opposition in the neighbourhood.

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a powerful mobile phone mast near two schools have been given the green light – despite fears children will be blasted by cancerous radiation.

The new 3G mast will be placed 200 metres from Crynallt Junior and Infant schools in Cimla and 16 metres from an existing mobile phone mast.

The latter was rejected by the planning department five years ago following an 800-name petition, but it went ahead in August 2003 after the Assembly overturned the decision on appeal.

BARDSEY residents continue to be blighted by a continuous buzzing noise they claim is coming from a mobile phone mast situated near their homes.

Orange was refused permission by Leeds City Council in the summer to keep its 15m mast on land at Sarsdale Ridge following hundreds of objections from Bardsey home owners.

But despite this refusal, the communications company has now chosen to use temporary planning laws to keep the mast up and it's appealed to The Government Planning Inspectorate in Bristol.

Gigantism is the handmaiden of modernity, or so we have been led to believe. In literature, future utopias are almost always characterized by a world government, on the grounds that presumably the people of earth have evolved beyond the narrow confines of nationalism and ethno-cultural particularities. Everybody wears a white tunic or body-stocking and flies around on jet-packs. Conversely, literary dystopias habitually depict a world riven by savagery and decentralized politico-economic units, e.g., The Shape of Things to Come, by H.G. Wells, in which an aspiring world government of technocrats battles the medieval remnants of local warlords. ‘We are the world’-ism is rife in liberal circles, and World Federalism has long been a cult, albeit a very small and uninfluential one, on the Left. However, the world government idea is — I predict — going to gain new traction in the coming years, and this is especially on account of the economic crisis currently roiling world markets...

For an Army officer, criticizing the military commissions at Guantanamo as a perversion of justice probably isn’t the best career move. That goes double if you also happen to be a former top military prosecutor at Gitmo. That’s why Lt. Colonel Darrel Vandeveld, a US army reservist with nearly 20 years of service under his belt, fears the worst when a military promotion board renders its decision in his case this week. Theoretically, the military brass reviewing his record could reward his distinguished service — to which various awards and commendations attest — and bump him up to full-bird colonel. Or, they could derail his military career. Vandeveld has reason to believe the board may attempt the latter — forcing into retirement the officer who, in a July 2009 congressional hearing, declared that ‘the military commission system is broken beyond repair’...
