Experts: SOFA Faces Legal Uncertainty

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "The Bush administration's push to nail down a bilateral agreement governing the future US presence in Iraq faces serious stumbling blocks. Despite the agreement's near-unanimous passage in the Iraqi cabinet, fueled by deepening pressure from the Bush administration, it faces firm opposition from legal scholars and US Congress members, who say it undermines President-elect Barack Obama's powers and illegally bypasses Congress, and from Iraqi parliamentarians, who are not satisfied with its withdrawal provisions."

Kinder in Hartz-IV-Familien gehen leer aus

19. November 2008

GM Maize Reduces Fertility and Deregulates Genes in Mice

ISIS Press Release 19/11/08

Comprehensive long term studies commissioned by the Austrian government reveal that mice fed GM maize produced fewer and smaller litters with many genes affected compared to controls. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

Austrian scientists carried out long term studies that showed GM maize fed to mice significantly reduced their fertility over three to four breeding cycles within one generation [1]. Similar effects were found in mice fed GM maize and bred over four generations; although the results did not reach statistical significance in any one generation, the trend was unmistakable, more pups lost and smaller litters in the GM-fed mice.

The studies are by far the most meticulous and comprehensive feeding trials to-date, and confirm deleterious reproductive and health impacts obtained by scientists independent of the biotech industry and farmers’ observations in the field. For a recent review, see [2] GM is Dangerous and Futile (SiS 40).

The new research results are a landmark in the safety assessment of GM food. Most feeding trials were short-term and restricted to a single generation or a single breeding cycle. The “multi-generational” study widely cited as evidence of no long term adverse impacts from GM feed is highly misleading as the experiment did not involve trans- generational feeding, but merely breeding mice that were not GM fed for three generations, and carrying out a separate experiment with GM feed for each generation [3] (Letter to Nature Biotechnology: Systematic bias in favour of no adverse impacts from GM feed, SiS 37). There were other serious flaws in that experiment, not least the failure to ascertain by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that the processed GM feed used actually contained GM soya.

ISIS Press Release 19/11/08

GM Maize Disturbs Immune System of Young and Old Mice

New research add to the weight of damning evidence against the safety of GM food Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

The Italian government’s National Institute of Research on Food and Nutrition has just published a report online in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry documenting significant disturbances in the immune system of young and old mice that have been fed the GM maize MON 810 [1]. This follows hot on the heels of results released by the Austrian government showing that GM Maize Reduces Fertility & Deregulates Genes in Mice (SiS 41) [2]. These revelations confirm a string of previous findings on adverse health impacts of GM food and feed, leave us in little doubt that GM is Dangerous and Futile (SiS 40) [3]. Proponents should stop misleading the public that GM food and feed is safe.

The GM maize and the parental non-GM variety from which it was derived, were grown simultaneously in neighbouring fields in Landriano, Italy, from seeds provided by Seeds Emporda (Girona, Spain). The control maize flour from the non-GM parental strain had a low level of GMO contamination
(0.29 percent by PCR test) but only the GM maize had the specific gene coding for the toxin Cry1Ab that acts as a pesticide.

The GM and non-GM maize were also analysed for levels of the fungal aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2, fumonisin B1 (FB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), ochratoxin, and zeralenon, that frequently contaminate maize grains. The values were below the maximum allowed in Europe, except for FB1 (1350 and 2450 mg/kg) and DON (1300 and 650 mg/kg) in GM and non-GM maize respectively.

The diets were formulated according to accepted standards and contained 50 percent MON810 or its parental control maize flour. A standard pellet diet containing about 50 percent of commercial non GM maize was also used, which did not contain CrylAb by PCR test.

Weaning mice, 21 days old, were fed with the diets for 30 and 90 days, and the old mice, 18 to 19 months, were fed for
90 days on the test diets; and male Balb/c mice were used in all the experiments.

There were no differences in the mean body weight or in food consumed between the GM-fed and control mice. These are the ‘agronomic’ characteristics typically measured in feeding tests, and all too often, the only characteristics measured.

Gas prices: The latest excuse to reengineer society

Foundation for Economic Education
by Steven Greenhut

11/18/08

[T]hose of us who understand a few things about free markets aren’t too worried (beyond our normal pocketbook considerations) when we see the trends. As long as the government doesn’t place too many barriers in the way, increasing gas prices will make it economically feasible for oil companies to find new sources of oil or more efficiently tap existing wells. Oil alternatives will spring up. It doesn’t matter if my car is powered by gasoline or chicken droppings. People might be encouraged to adjust their lifestyles somewhat, but I would be shocked if the energy situation causes widespread changes in most Americans’ daily lives. Every ‘crisis,’ however, gives voice to those who believe that current lifestyles are ‘unsustainable’ and must be changed — for the sake of the planet!

Should we worry about deflation?

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Doug French

11/18/08

There is now worldwide worrying about price deflation again. After all, real estate prices have sunk, stock prices have hit the ditch, the price of oil has the sheiks concerned, and even Las Vegas hotel room rates have plunged. Sounds like all good news for those of us who buy things, at the same time being a bit of a bummer for heavily indebted sellers. … Yes, the current economics brain trust is worried that consumers will collectively show the good sense to delay purchases, pay down debt, and increase their savings...

Fears voiced over mobile phone mast

by KEITH BULL

CAMPAIGNERS are questioning the wisdom of placing a mobile phone mast near to a post office and a busy road.

Vodafone is hoping to erect the 12 metre high pole on land at the corner of St Peter's Street and Spring Terrace Road in Stapenhill.

The mast, if given the green light, will be positioned close to Stapenhill Post Office.

A notice signalling the intentions of the communications giant has been placed on the lamppost outside the post office.

Asimah Alam, who is also the daughter of sub-postmaster Nek Alam, told The Mail that the proposed location was 'unacceptable'.

She said: "This area already has issues with air quality due to the busy road and the number of cars that pass here each day.

"We don't need radiation on our doorstep joining with the pollution from cars.

Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales have been indicted on separate charges related to alleged prisoner abuse in federal detention centers, Willacy County, Texas, District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra told CNN Tuesday. The indictment stems from Cheney’s investment in the Vanguard Group — an investment management company that reportedly has interests in the prison companies in charge of the detention centers, according to The Associated Press. It also charges Gonzales halted an investigation into abuse at the detention centers while he was attorney general...

More Children Went Hungry in 2007

hosted.ap.org — Some 691,000 children went hungry in America sometime in 2007, while close to one in eight Americans struggled to feed themselves adequately even before this year's sharp economic downturn, the Agriculture Department reported. The department's annual report on food security showed that during 2007 the number of children who suffered a substantial disruption in the amount of food they typically eat was more than 50 percent above the 430,000 in 2006 and the largest figure since 716,000 in 1998. Overall, the 36.2 million adults and children who struggled with hunger during the year was up slightly from 35.5 million in 2006. That was 12.2 percent of Americans who didn't have the money or assistance to get enough food to maintain active, healthy lives.

Automakers: Millions of Jobs Will Vanish

The Big Three automakers warn that if they go under, the fragile U.S. economy will be dealt a blow far costlier than the $25 billion in aid the companies want. The question legislators, pundits, lobbyists and taxpayers are asking is: If we let these guys fail, how bad will it really be for the economy? Moody's Economy.com chief economist Mark Zandi estimates that 2.6 million jobs — about 1.9% of the U.S. workforce — would be lost if GM, Chrysler and Ford were to go under. That includes more than 255,000 people directly tied to the three companies and an additional 2.3 million whose jobs are indirectly dependent. Zandi argues the economy is too weak to absorb the fallout from an auto industry crisis.

Funny business

Idaho Liberty

So let me get this straight. Ford, GM and Chrysler build products that nobody buys (alongside some that do get sold). The unsold products sit around in storage sites waiting for buyers. Lack of sales causes lack of income. Therefore we should print even more dollars, take dollars away from everyone who earns or owns them, to give to the automakers. Since our new socialist government is going to be more equitable than the old mercantilist one, the dollars given to the automakers will be distributed not to the mis-managers, but to the proletariat. About the only way I can figure to do this in an egalitarian fashion, is to give those dollars to the workers who, in turn, keep producing autos (at $85/hour union scale wages, of course)...

Lieberman’s best option

The Nation
by John Nichols

11/17/08

Democrat-turned-independent-turned-John-McCain-backer Joe Lieberman faces an election of sorts on Tuesday. … Arguments have been made that, because of his support for McCain and his neo-conservative stances on foreign-policy issues, Lieberman should be stripped of all his committee assignments. And some pound-of-flesh critics propose expelling him from the caucus...

Japan’s whaling fleet sets out for Antarctic

Reuters

11/17/08

The main ship in Japan’s whaling fleet set out for the Antarctic on Monday for its first hunt in the region since limping home with just over half its planned catch in April following clashes with militant anti-whaling activists, environmentalist group Greenpeace said. The Nisshin Maru set out from Innoshima in western Japan, Greenpeace said, part of a plan to take about 850 minke whales and 50 fin whales. Last year six ships took part in the hunt. The vessel’s movements will be followed by a ship belonging to Sea Shepherd, an anti-whaling group that skirmished repeatedly with the fleet at sea last year in an attempt to halt the hunt...

UK: Pilots threaten to strike over ID cards

Independent [UK]

11/18/08

The first wave of ID cards to be issued to British citizens has prompted airline pilots to threaten a strike rather than accept the documents. Aviation workers have warned that proposals to make airport staff register for the cards from next year would do little to improve security. The British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa), which represents 10,000 of the 12,000 commercial pilots and flight engineers in Britain, said its members were being treated as “guinea pigs”. Jim McAuslan, Balpa’s general secretary, said the Government’s “early warning system should be flashing” over opp”...

Why do we need another mast?

Sitefinder website which has revealed there are already eight masts in Hellesdon.

DAVID BALE

18 November 2008 07:00

Campaigners against a controversial mobile phone mast today asked why it was needed when there were already several masts in the immediate area.

The Evening News last week called on bosses at telecommunications giant O2 to scrap plans to build a mast on Reepham Road, Hellesdon, where it only won planning consent due to a planning blunder by Broadland District Council.

And today it has emerged that there are already eight masts in the Hellesdon area, all within less than a mile of the proposed site being considered by O2.

Stop Bush's Midnight Raid Upon Oregon's Wild Forests and Rivers

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

FORESTS ALERT!

By Ecological Internet's Forests.org, http://forests.org/ November 17, 2008

TAKE ACTION Like his Presidency, it is time for President Bush's looting, plundering, and pillaging of America’s natural beauty, ecological treasures and vital ecosystems to end

http://forests.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=oregon_midnight_raid

The Bush Administration is rushing out long-term plans that would convert over 2 million acres of Oregon's national forests, with their towering trees, rushing rivers, and superb wildlife habitat, to empty clearcuts. Much of the forests under siege are in the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Crest, which contains some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the continent. There are some 20,000 miles of rivers, where wild Pacific salmon thrive. Ancient old-growth forests are abundant -- home to huge Douglas fir, western hemlock and western red cedar trees -- some well over 400 years old.

The plan increases logging by 400% and would target 100,000 acres of old-growth forests for destruction. Oregon Governor Kulongoski is the only elected official standing between the Bush Administration and western Oregon's forests, rivers and salmon. He is allowed a 60-day "consistency review" period to propose recommendations for changes to land use plans. Please encourage the governor to propose significant amendments, pushing this decision to the Obama administration.

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://forests.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=oregon_midnight_raid

The Ballot Heard 'Round The World

By David Michael Green

The America of 2012 or 2016 will be nearly unrecognizable from the swamp in which we've been mired since 2000, and all those changes will be for the better. And they will have hugely salutary effects well beyond our borders as well.

US's Road to Recovery Runs Through Beijing

By Francesco Sisci and David P Goldman

For the past decade, poor people in the developing world have financed the consumption of rich people in America. America has borrowed nearly $1 trillion a year, mostly from the developing world, and used these funds to import consumer goods and buy homes at low interest rates. The result is a solvency crisis of the American household, which shows up as a solvency crisis for financial institutions.

The G-20 Economic Summit Won't Change the "Financial Crime Scene"

I worked in the U.S. Treasury Department for 21 years and learned first-hand the history and operations of public finance in the U.S. I have seen the disastrous results of the debt-based financial system and how it has driven our nation, government, and people into bankruptcy. I have also seen how these simple measures of monetary reform would be easy to implement and would begin to turn the situation around within weeks or months.

The Bailout's Next 60 Days

The New York Times, Editorial Team: "A month into the Bush administration's $700 billion bank bailout, the effort has become as fractured as the ad hoc rescues that it was supposed to replace. As a result, the modest easing the bailout initially brought about in the credit markets is now being reversed over doubts about the Treasury's stewardship of the plan."
