Bush Provokes Fear to Push for Bailout

Dean Baker, The Center for Economic and Policy Research: "This is the first time in the history of the United States that the president has sought to provoke a financial panic to get legislation through Congress. While this has proven to be a successful political strategy, it marks yet another low point in American politics. It was incredibly irresponsible for President Bush to tell the American people on national television that the country could be facing another Great Depression. By contrast, when we actually were in the Great Depression, President Roosevelt said that, 'we have nothing to fear, but fear itself.'"

GOP Strategists Fear Greater Losses in November

Chris Cillizza and Shailagh Murray, The Washington Post: "With the party already struggling to generate enthusiasm for its brand, Republican strategists fear that an outpouring of public anger generated by Congress's struggle to pass a rescue package for the financial industry may contribute to a disaster at the polls for the GOP in November. 'The crisis has affected the entire ticket,' said Jan van Lohuizen, a Republican consultant who handled the polling for President Bush's reelection campaign. 'The worse the state's economy, the greater the impact.'"

With No Plan B, House Reluctantly Passes Politically Risky Measure

Jonathan Weisman, David Cho and Paul Kane, The Washington Post: "'There is no joy,' said Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), a rock-ribbed conservative who switched her 'no' vote to a 'yes' yesterday, even though a Democratic surge in North Carolina is making her once-easy district look increasingly dicey. 'I don't like the bill. I'm not going to defend the bill. . . . I had to do the right thing, even though, politically, it might kill me.' In some sense, the crisis atmosphere that has gripped Washington during its struggle to deal with the damage to world financial markets brought out the very worst in the city, precisely the chaotic, partisan atmosphere that voters seem so ready to punish next month at the polls."

Bail-out leads to conflict of interest claims as Wall Street Financiers Cash in on Crisis

By Tim Shipman

New questions have been raised about the $700 billion economic bail-out of the US economy as President George W. Bush warned that the world may have to wait weeks for the benefits of the rescue package to be felt.

Bemerton phone mast turned down

A PROPOSAL for a new mobile phone mast at Bemerton Heath has been turned down by planners amid fears it would spoil the surrounding nature reserve.

Salisbury District Council's city area planning committee turned down the application, at Folly Woods, despite the recommendation of officers.

Pentagon Hands Iraq Oil Deal to Shell

Nick Turse, AlterNet: "The fact that the US government secretly facilitated dealings between Shell and the Iraqi Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts; that the U.S. military - the primary occupation force in Iraq - regularly pays Shell billions of dollars each year; that on the heals of a contract worth hundred of millions of dollars with the US military, Shell just inked a deal with occupied Iraq and set up an office in the US military's secure 'Green Zone' should raise myriad questions about the tangled relationship between the major players in Iraq."

Psychological Weapons of War

By Cesar Chelala

It is a mystery how the Iraq war was planned and supported for a long time without an effective opposition, despite being one of the worst foreign policy decisions in recent U.S. history. But it becomes less of a puzzle if one applies to the situation some principles of social psychology. In this light, a return to the classic literature is pertinent.

Spend the bailout money on the middle class

The Nation
by Howard Zinn

10/08/08

It is sad to see both major parties agree to spend $700 billion of taxpayer money to bail out huge financial institutions that are notable for two characteristics: incompetence and greed. There is a much better solution to the financial crisis. But it would require discarding what has been conventional wisdom for too long: that government intervention in the economy (’big government’) must be avoided like the plague, because the ‘free market’ can be depended on to guide the economy toward growth and justice. Surely the sight of Wall Street begging for government aid is almost comic in light of its long devotion to a ‘free market’ unregulated by government...

Congress Has Betrayed Us Yet AGAIN!!

Hundreds of billions more in the last 2 years for a senseless military occupation, the FISA outrage, paralysis on impeachment or even enforcing subpoenas, and now a total surrender of the future of our treasury in an 850 billion dollar bailout of Wall Street fat cats. Congress has done worse than do nothing, they have done categorically the WRONG thing, and the whole rest of the world knows it, and THAT is why the stock market has been dropping like a rock ever since the Senate stampeded through this bailout monstrosity.

What Are We Going To Do About It?!

TV Spot Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/cindy/bankers_bailout.php

By arrogantly ignoring our literally millions of phone calls and emails vehemently opposed to this lunatic policy blunder, Congress has demonstrated that they are for the most part beyond redemption. We have only one practical recourse. Vote the losers out of office as just soon as possible, and replace each and every one of them with strong progressives who WILL be accountable to the people.

We MUST Help Cindy Sheehan defeat Nancy Pelosi

This is our only real chance for the next two years. Nothing would send a stronger message that the voice of the people actually COUNTS for something that a resounding victory for Cindy Sheehan in the Congressional race for the 8th district of California against Nancy Pelosi in just 4 weeks. NOTHING would send a stronger message to the gutless wimps in Congress that their reign of cowardice is over.

What we need is literally a tsunami of donations to put Cindy Sheehan's new TV spot on the air, where she pulls no punches about the abject failure of Pelosi to lead. If you are frustrated, if you are angry, if you can make a donation of any amount, please do so from the page below.

Watch The New TV Spot: http://www.usalone.com/cindy/bankers_bailout.php

And as if all this weren't galling enough. How do you like how Bush came out in the Rose Garden after signing the "Fox In Charge Of The Hen House Bill" to basically say, "Thanks, chumps."?

How dare they call themselves "Representatives"? How dare they! With their phones flooded a hundred to one shouting down this massive theft from the American taxpayer, with such an avalanche of emails coming the House email servers almost crashed, how dare they?! And guess what, the people were right. The hundreds of top economists pleading for sanity and a hearing were right.

Pelosi, the queen of the cave-ins must be defeated. There can be no honor in allowing her to remain in office. Shame on us if we don't do everything we could have done to remove her. Then and only then can all the other things that need to be done to fix this disaster be implemented.

And please, if you are the San Francisco area. Cindy needs an army of volunteers to hit the streets inspiring voters. And even if you are not, you can help make phone calls. There are volunteer links on the same page with the video. You can do something. You must do something. Please help.

And let election day this time be a bright and shining day where we the people actually start to take back control of our own government.

Paid for by Cindy Sheehan for Congress

Donations to Cindy Sheehan for Congress are not tax-deductible

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Wanted: persons who can translate from Dutch to English and to French

The Dutch Knowledge Platform Safe Mobile Network (KPSMN) has a very interesting website on how a safer mobile network can be created
( http://www.kennisplatformveiligmobielnetwerk.info/ ). They argue that a few relatively simple technical adjustments to mobile networks (namely higher placed antennas which emit at lower power) can significantly lower ambient radiation levels, without this hindering the functioning of mobile networks (like the system that is already applied in Salzburg).

The European Parliament and other policy makers around the world have become concerned about the issue of EMF. The information on the website of the KPSMN could provide them with very useful and especially useable information that shows that it is in fact fairly easy to achieve lower radiation levels. It is very concrete information that can be easily translated into policy measures.

The problem is however that the website is only available in Dutch at the moment. So it would be very, very valuable if the website could be translated to English and/or French (and perhaps other languages), preferably by native speakers of these languages, or otherwise people who master these languages very well.

People willing to do this can send an email to info[at]kennisplatformveiligmobielnetwerk.info (please put Beperk.de.straling[at]gmail.com in cc)

Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who insists he would veto any pork barrel bills to come across his desk as president, is struggling to explain his vote for the revised financial bailout plan that contained a number of those pet projects. In an interview on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ program Thursday, McCain said the extra sweeteners added to the financial bailout bill that passed Wednesday night in the Senate are ‘just the way the system is working in Washington, and the reason why it’s got to be fixed and it’s got to be changed’...

With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. How to break the money monopoly

The Nation/Howl
by Nicholas von Hoffman

10/02/08

Once again, the small group of financial organizations and the few thousand people who constitute what we call Wall Street have brought the country to the verge of ruin. It’s been barely ten years since they visited the dot-com boom and bust on the nation and twenty years since they took us to the edge of ruin in the savings and loan scandals. Leading the first response team trying to save Wall Street is Henry Paulson, secretary of the treasury and the former CEO of Goldman Sachs. While at Goldman Sachs, Paulson is estimated to have enriched himself by a one-half billion to three-quarters of a billion dollars...

Deflation on the horizon

The Nation
by Nicholas von Hoffman

09/30/08

The next phase in this great unraveling is deflation. Deflation is when you go to the supermarket and things cost less. Deflation is when prices go down–but in our present situation that is nothing to cheer about. If everyday life is hit by a deflationary wave, it will bring extreme hardship to millions. This will not be a gentle dropping of prices, as when safe and competent hands are running the Federal Reserve Board and those in charge are simply steadying the value of money. This, if it comes, will be a brutal and jarring drop in prices. We have just experienced one example of a deflationary drop when the stock market took a nose dive and share prices went down at a sickening speed. In one day pension funds, 401(k)s, college savings accounts, charitable foundations, college and university endowments collectively lost $1.3 trillion. That’s deflation of the brutal kind...

Red Flag on Purging Voter Rolls

Pia Malbran, CBS News: "With Election Day rapidly approaching, a new report, obtained exclusively by CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian, raises serious questions and exposes flaws in the way states maintain their voter registration rolls."

Voter Purges

Myrna Perez, Brennen Center for Justice: "Voter registration lists, also called voter rolls, are the gateway to voting. A citizen typically cannot cast a vote that will count unless her name appears on the voter registration rolls. Yet, state and local officials regularly remove - or 'purge' - citizens from voter rolls."

The economy already has lost 605,000 jobs this year."

Pakistan, United States: Brink of War?

Mustafa Qadri, Foreign Policy in Focus: "As the United States steps up border raids into Pakistan, troops from both countries have commenced a deadly game of brinksmanship. Although aimed at asserting each other's military presence along the Pakistan-Afghan border, the skirmishes risk outright hostilities."

Dueling partners: Pakistan and America

A country once callously shrugged off simply as India's "lesser" neighbor, now commands global attention and scrutiny as the next, crucial battleground on the never ending "war on terror."

Heeding the lessons of another war

If continued, ground incursions by U.S. troops across the border into Pakistan in search of the Taliban and Al Qaeda risk drastically undermining the Pakistani state, society and army.

New masts get a bad reception

Friday, October 03, 2008, 07:00

THEY'VE been linked to everything from suicides in Bridgend to cancer in Bristol, and every time a phone company wants to install a mast near houses, schools and public places there's outcry.

The most recent furore has surrounded a mast installed by Vodafone in Townhill, despite Swansea Council planners voting to reject the company's application.

A delay of 24 hours in telling the company of the council's decision meant the installation could go ahead anyway.

Around 200 local people had signed a petition to stop the mast being built in the middle of a residential area. They were concerned about their and their children's health.

The New American Century: Cut Short By 92 Years

By Mike Whitney

There's trouble ahead. The multi-polar world is about to collide head-on with the "faith-based" unipolar world and millions are bound to suffer. But there is no doubt about the final outcome. The geopolitical plates are shifting inexorably away from Washington. America's ability to wage war will steadily erode as capital and resources dry up. Its only a matter of time before the war machine sputters to a halt and the troops return home. When the killing stops, a truly new world order will begin.
