Global Starvation Ignored by American Policy Elites

By Peter Phillips

Over 30,000 people a day (85% children under 5) die of malnutrition, curable diseases, and starvation. The numbers of unnecessary deaths has exceeded three hundred million people over the past forty years.

Global Starvation Ignored by American Policy Elites

By Peter Phillips

It turns out that while farmers grow enough food to feed the world, commodity speculators and huge grain traders like Cargill control the global food prices and distribution. Starvation is profitable for corporations when demands for food push the prices up.

US a Step Closer to Iran Blockade

The United States government has imposed new sanctions on Iran, this time targeting its shipping industry, by blacklisting the main shipping line and 18 subsidiaries, accusing the maritime carrier of being engaged in contraband nuclear material, a charge vehemently denied by Iran.

Leaked Draft Agreement Calls for Indefinite Iraq Occupation

By Amy Goodman

I think both the candidates, Obama and McCain, are planning to leave troops in the long run. So from an Iraqi point of view, I don't think there is a major difference in the U.S. foreign policy in Iraq between the two candidates, because both of them are not for ending the intervention in Iraq. Both of them are for keeping troops in Iraq. They call it residual force; they call it whatever they want to call it. But they want to continue interfering in Iraq militarily and politically in the long run.

Weakened Warriors: When the Military Gets Combat Fatigue

Bruce Falconer, Mother Jones: "That the Bush presidency has placed an enormous strain on the nation's armed forces is hardly news. (The 'active army is about broken,' Colin Powell told CBS's Face the Nation as far back as 2006.) Less frequently noted are the long-term consequences of Iraq and Afghanistan for the military-consequences that could last, many experts now say, for a generation or more."

GOP Working to Keep Poor African-Americans From Voting in Many States

Jonathan Alter, Newsweek: "It was a mainstay of Jim Crow segregation: for 100 years after the Civil War, Southern white Democrats kept eligible blacks from voting with poll taxes, literacy tests and property requirements. Starting in the 1960s, the U.S. Supreme Court declared these assaults on the heart of American democracy unconstitutional. Now, with the help of a 2008 Supreme Court decision, Crawford vs. Marion County (Indiana) Election Board, white Republicans in some areas will keep eligible blacks from voting by requiring driver's licenses. Not only is this new-fangled discrimination constitutional, it's spreading."

The suppression of dissent in America

CounterPunch
by Linn Washington Jr.

09/11/08

In presenting a compelling examination of the plight of death row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal the documentary ‘In Prison My Whole Life’ also probes one of the deeper contradictions of America: persistent suppression of dissent. For a nation that extols the provisions of the First Amendment, politicians and police have histories of running roughshod over the rights of citizens to exercise their constitutional freedoms of speech, assembly and presenting grievances to government. The recent actions against peaceful demonstrators and non-mainstream journalists by federal and local law enforcement personnel during the Republican National Convention in St Paul, Minnesota is yet another example of suppression of dissent...

Tower activists urge MPs to change law

Urgent law change is required to stop cellphone companies forcing towers upon communities wherever and whenever they want, MPs were told yesterday.

Sue Grey, of Ban the Towers, told the select committee considering the group's 3100-signature petition of eight neighbourhoods with unwanted celltowers that often "only find out about them when workmen are climbing on the roof".

Residents of Waiheke Island's Surfdale Beach found out about a Vodafone tower only when a woman recovering from breast cancer asked workers in "unmarked white vans" what they were doing.

Human Rights Are Crumbling

Stephane Bussard, Le Temps: "The 1990s marked a significant advance in international justice. The May 1999 indictment of Serbian leader Milosevic was emblematic of the progress achieved in the fight against impunity. The attempt now afoot by certain Security Council members, including France and Great Britain, to torpedo an International Criminal Court trial even before it's launched could very well squander the benefits of the 'moral decade.'"

In August 2008 during the Russia-Georgia-Ossetia war. AGENDA FOR THE "JUSTICE ROBERT H. JACKSON CONFERENCE": PLANNING FOR THE PROSECUTION OF HIGH LEVEL AMERICAN WAR CRIMINALS

September 13 - 14, 2008, Andover, Massachusetts

Registration details available at: http://war-crimes.info

"The common sense of mankind demands that law shall not stop with the punishment of petty crimes by little people. It must also reach men who possess themselves of great power and make deliberate and concerted use of it to set in motion evils which leave no home in the world untouched."

* * *

"The Charter of this Tribunal evidences a faith that the law is not only to govern the conduct of little men, but that even rulers are, as Lord Chief Justice Coke put it to King James, 'under God and the law.'"

* * *

"And let me make clear that while this law is first applied against German aggressors, the law includes, and if it is to serve a useful purpose it must condemn aggression by any other nations, including those which sit here now in judgment."

From Opening Statement of The Chief Prosecutor, Supreme Justice Robert H. Jackson, at Nuremberg.

"The same disaster has now happened twice in forty years, in Viet Nam and Iraq. It must never happen again. As at Nuremberg, we need to take steps to insure that leaders will never do it again." - Lawrence R. Velvel, Dean of the Massachusetts School of Law

The Value of One, the Value of None: An Anatomy of Collateral Damage in the Bush Era

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "We have no idea just how many civilians have been blown away by the US military (and allies) in these years, only that the 'collateral damage' has been widespread and far more central to the president's War on Terror than anyone here generally cares to acknowledge. Collateral damage has come in myriad ways - from artillery fire in the initial invasion of Iraq; from repeated shootings of civilians in vehicles at checkpoints, and from troops (or even private mercenaries) blasting away from convoys; during raids on private homes; in village operations, and, significantly, from the air."

Hot reception for Vodafone masts in Old Colwyn

Health fears have followed mobile phone giant Vodafone’s plans to put up a mast at Tan Llwyfan at Penmaenhead near the site of the old Hotel 70 Degrees. A second mast is proposed on Abergele Road opposite the Aldi supermarket.

Both masts are proposed to be put on footpaths and are in residential areas, prompting fears about the dangers of microwaves.

Residents made their stand this week after they received a letter from the communications company as part of a consultation process which must take place before any planning application is considered.

MP to hear phone mast law change appeal

Thursday, September 11, 2008, 07:30

PARLIAMENTARY Chief Whip Geoff Hoon was urged to help change the law when he visited Eastwood families locked in a battle over a phone mast.

T-Mobile put up the 72ft temporary mast in December on land at the end of two gardens in Chewton Street – without telling the residents.

It said it did not need permission as it was using "emergency powers" because the signal from an existing smaller mast was blocked by a new housing development.

But when the six-month emergency period ended the mast remained in place – and Broxtowe Borough Council then served an enforcement notice, ordering the company to remove it or submit a planning application within 28 days.

A strange sort of victory

If George Bush's recent speech is anything to go by, Iraq has been a success. Does anyone in their right mind believe him?

Reflections on 9-11

Was America Attacked by Muslims on 9/11?

By David Ray Griffin

Much of America's foreign policy since 9/11 has been based on the assumption that it was attacked by Muslims on that day. - Is it conceivable that this assumption might be false? Insofar as Americans and Canadians would say "No," they would express their belief that this assumption is not merely an "assumption" but is instead based on strong evidence. When actually examined, however, the proffered evidence turns out to be remarkably weak. I will illustrate this point by means of 16 questions.

9/11 and the Great American Decline

By Glen Ford

In its convulsive "response" to 9/11 - the worldwide "War on Terror" - the United States seized the opportunity to put in motion planetary aggressions that already existed in the blueprints of the neo-con's Project for a New American Century (PNAC). In effect, Washington was claiming revenge as the motive for crimes that it had long been planning to commit. Precise causality for the specific events of 9/11 becomes near-irrelevant, submerged in the much larger aggression that was conceived long before the towers fell.

Temporary Respites from Permanent Decline

By Paul Craig Roberts

The US is dependent on foreigners to finance its $600 billion annual government budget deficit and its $800 billion annual trade deficit. The US government relies on foreigners to recycle their $800 billion trade surplus dollars to buy US Treasury bonds and mortgage debt.

Norfolk wants escape clause in tower contract

Dear Editor

I have just been reading the article entitled 'Norfolk wants escape clause in tower contract'. It seems very strange that Norfolk Council should need to add such a clause or even think about renewing the contract. The council have already been provided with a huge amount of information which proves that microwave radiation is highly dangerous, that it causes cancer and many different adverse health effects, yet. they are still willing to allow Bell Mobility to expose the community to great danger.

I am surprised that they don't allow the contract, collect the money and put up a sign saying to the nearby residents - 'We don't give a d... whether you get ill, develop cancer or die. We have the money, we have pleased the corporate giant and you can go to h...'.

Not only was Norfolk Council educated on the dangers and health effects of microwave radiation in their own council chambers, but the process was even televised throughout the community. There is a clear record of council's special knowledge about the dangers of microwave radiation.

Norfolk Council have already shown that they are not interested in the health and welfare of the citizens of Simcoe, with the shameful actions they took by allowing the Rogers cell phone antennas to stay on the Simcoe water tower. They have also shown that they are not fit to represent the health and safety interests of their own constituents.

I dare Norfolk Council to provide the same information about the adverse health effects of microwave radiation, that they were provided with previously, to the citizens of Port Dover and let them make their own decision as to whether the contract is renewed.
