Crony capitalism, not competition marks Bush oil policy in Iraq

Freedom's Phoenix
by Sherwood Ross

08/11/08

The Hunt and Halliburton deals offer vivid proof that ‘crony capitalism,’ not the free market brand, is being practiced divvying up Iraq’s oil resources and the other spoils of war. This has long been Bush’s modus vivendi. The Wall Street Journal once noted his Harken Energy Co. acquired exclusive offshore drilling rights from Bahrain in 1990 even though it had never drilled a single well. How did Harken get it? Well, Bush’s father at the time occupied the White House...

Illusions of Victory

Andrew Bacevich of TomDispatch: "Valor does not offer the measure of an army's greatness, nor does fortitude, nor durability, nor technological sophistication. A great army is one that accomplishes its assigned mission. Since George W. Bush inaugurated his global war on terror, the armed forces of the United States have failed to meet that standard."

The Big Voice

Kathy Kelly for Truthout: "About six months ago, Dan Pearson, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, swiveled around in his office chair in our tiny "headquarters" to ask what we thought about organizing a walk from Chicago to St. Paul, arriving just before the Republican National Convention. A dedicated group of volunteers joined Dan to plan a project, which, to me, is one of the best-organized efforts I've ever encountered, all aimed at voicing a witness against war, particularly in Wisconsin, where 3,500 National Guard troops are on alert for a call-up to combat duty, in Iraq, in 2009."

Charity gives up £68,000 mast pay-out

Being a good neighbour has cost a charity £68,000.

Galloway's Society for the Blind has pulled out of a plan to erect a mobile phone mast after a barrage of complaints from residents living nearby.

The charity say the action will cost them £68,000 – and phone company O2 will still go ahead with their plans on a different site.

American Complicity: The Solution

By Timothy Gatto

As globalization becomes a way of life, we realize that each and every one of us is part of a larger whole. What happens on one side of the world directly affects our part of the world. There are those that remain oblivious to the fact that everything that happens in this much smaller world has a cause and effect. The American government is operating in a time warp that has not changed since the end of WWII.

I was disappointed that Mr Michael Dolan, Executive Director Mobile Operators Association, did not speak directly to me to obtain the facts of the Campaign that is taking place to permanently remove the base-station on High Acres Estate Kingswinford.

There are several factors to our case and Mr Dolan is very welcome to visit the site, look at the documentation that has been obtained to date and discuss the unacceptable situation our community are faced with.

Phone mast near church 'outrageous'

PLANS to put up a phone mast outside an ancient church in Seaford have been 'cynically timed', says a district councillor.

Vodaphone has lodged an application to build a 10-metre mast and equipment cabinet on the pavement at St Peter's Church in Belgrave Road, Blatchington.

Ward councillor Carolyn Lambert is appealing for people to object to 'this outrageous proposition' and said: 'How cynical as well to submit the application at a time when many people are likely to be on holiday?'

She said the pole and antennae would stand on a normal-sized pavement on a busy route to the nearby primary school. An application for a 12-metre pole was refused in 2005 because its siting and design was considered 'to represent an incongruous intrusion into the street scene'.

Cllr Lambert said: 'And a dangerous impediment to pedestrians might be added.'

Betreff: Thurgauer Regierungsrat empfiehlt keine WLANs an Schulen

Liebe MobilfunkkritikerInnen

Herzlichen Dank an alle Beteiligten.

V. (DUH) ergeben.

Big Business is making sure it wins the presidency

AlterNet
by Matt Taibbi

08/09/08

From Wall Street to the Big Oil powerhouses to the military-industrial complex, America’s fat-cat business leaders know that the Animal House-style party of the last eight years that made almost all of them rich with bonuses, government contracts and bubble profits is about to come to an end, and someone is going to have to pay to clean up the mess. They want that someone to be you, not them, and they’ve spared no expense to make sure both presidential candidates will be there to bail them out next year. They’re succeeding. Both would-be presidents have already sold us out. They’ve taken the money and run — completing the cyclical transformation of the American political narrative from one of monopolistic Republican iniquity to an even more depressing tale about the overweening power of corporate money and the essentially fictitious nature of our two-party system. In layman’s terms, we’ve gone from being screwed...

If I Were Once A Democrat Again, this is What I'd Tell Obama

The Democrats are wondering why their candidate's numbers are slowly circling the drain. How stupid is that? Washington’s intervention addiction

The Free Liberal
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

One problem with politicians is that when problems they create come to a head, they typically feel this irresistible urge to DO something, rather than to UN-do something, or to simply back off to avoid exacerbating the situation. Too often, that which they end up doing has very little connection to the cause of the crisis, but plays well in the press and superficially makes everyone feel better. Bills that are rushed through Congress under duress are never studied enough, providing too tempting an opportunity to quietly slip in unrelated provisions that erode freedoms in ways that would never pass as a stand-alone bill. We famously saw this with the PATRIOT Act, but Washington learned nothing from that. The current housing crisis and the corresponding big government fix are another prime example...

Using these, you can serve law enforcement officers with a letter and a copy of the Constitution. If you like, you can also include a copy of ‘The Proper Role of Law Enforcement,’ by Sheriff Richard Mack. The project can be carried out by a small group very inexpensively. The US government is the real bioterror threat

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

08/08/08

Assuming the federal government has, after almost seven years, finally identified the perpetrator of the anthrax attacks in 2001 — admittedly a generous assumption given that for most of those years, it pursued, hounded, embarrassed, and ruined the career of the wrong man — larger dangers remain. As is normally the case with issues surrounding terrorism, the average citizen will probably be shocked to learn that their government is often a bigger threat than the terrorists. Remember the CIA’s creation of the 9/11 threat by supporting the most radical Islamist groups fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan during the 1980s and then the U.S. government’s provocation of terrorist attacks from those same militants by its non-Islamic military presence in Islamic Persian Gulf countries in the 1990s, which had continued unnecessarily subsequent to the first Gulf War. Similarly, in the case of bioterrorism, the threat from the government is greater than from foreign groups such as al Qaeda...

The Right to Vote

The New York Times writes about protecting the right to vote: "Much about the presidential election is up in the air, but one thing is certain: voters will have trouble casting ballots on Election Day. In a perfect world, states and localities would handle voting so well that the public could relax and worry about other things. But elections are so mismanaged - and so many eligible voters are disenfranchised - that ordinary citizens have to get involved."

Colchester: Teacher's phone mast protest

10:00pm Sunday 10th August 2008

By Lynne Milford

A Colchester head teacher has hit out at a mobile phone company for starting a consultation during the school holidays.

Bridget Harris, head teacher at St Thomas More’s Catholic Primary School, said she received a letter from Vodafone regarding plans for a mobile mast on nearby St Botolph’s Church only because a school secretary happened to go in to work.

“What has angered me is that we’re given 14 days to complain but the letter was sent to arrive after we closed for the summer,” she said.
