Doubt cast on U.S. version of terror suspect's arrest

As U.S. authorities took a purported al Qaida operative to court on attempted murder and assault charges Tuesday in New York, her family, the Afghan police and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan cast doubts on the accuracy of the American story.

US Military Jury Finds Hamdan Guilty on One Terrorism Charge

Agence France-Presse: "Military jurors found Osama bin Laden's former driver, Salim Hamdan, not guilty Wednesday on terrorist conspiracy charges, but convicted him on the lesser charge of providing material support to terrorism. The split verdict marked a dramatic conclusion of the first trial before the special tribunals created by President George W. Bush to try suspects in the 'war on terror.'"

Verdict is in on Bush style justice

Toronto Star [Canada]
by Haroon Siddiqui

08/07/08

Osama bin Laden’s driver Salim Hamdan was convicted at Guantanamo Bay yesterday — in his second trial at the hands of the Bush administration. Had his first in 2004 not been interrupted by a successful appeal to the Supreme Court, he would have been acquitted. For what he has been found guilty of — providing material support to terrorism — was not then under the jurisdiction of the military tribunal that has sentenced him. Such is justice under George W. Bush. Such is the justice that awaits Omar Khadr and 80 others to be tried by the special military tribunals at Guantanamo. More than the detainees, though, it is the Bush administration that’s on trial. Thus the United States is on trial. There, the verdict is already in: Guilty. Guilty of torturing detainees. Guilty of obtaining evidence from torture. Guilty of introducing hearsay evidence in trials. Guilty of hiding evidence from the detainees...

“Justice” in the Hamdan case

Disloyal Opposition
by JD Tuccille

08/07/08

Whatever the justice of the verdict in the case against Osama bin Laden driver Salim Ahmed Hamdan — and the split decision seems at least defensible — the process by which that verdict was reached was fundamentally flawed. It’s impossible to place much faith in the result of a legal proceeding which stacked the deck in favor of the prosecution, violated fundamental American rules of due process, and in which the outcome was essentially preordained. One problem is that the sentence came first, with the trial to follow. Early on, the Bush administration labeled Hamdan an ‘enemy combatant’ and ordered him held indefinitely. So even a total acquittal would have been nothing more than a conversational topic for Hamdan to toss around during the course of an arbitrary sentence that could extend for the duration of his life...

The Food Crisis and Global Institutions

Alexandra Spieldoch, Foreign Policy In Focus: "In July, World Trade Organization Director-General Pascal Lamy organized a mini-Ministerial to complete the Doha Development Round, and couched it as a necessary means to address the food crisis. Not surprisingly, negotiations collapsed over ongoing disagreements about whether WTO members have the right to protect their food security and 'livelihoods' (jobs) from import surges. The failed talks signal a growing understanding that trade liberalization has destabilized local food systems and hurt farmers, contributing to both the long-term and short-causes of today’s food crisis. This marks a shift from the earlier globalization debates and deserves our attention."

Exposed: Europe’s GM-Hype in Times of Food and Fuel Crisis

ISIS Press Release 06/08/08

Pro-GM brigade at large in the food and fuel crisis

The pro-GM brigade has been losing no time in exploiting the current global food and fuel crisis and the high price of animal feed to promote GM as the solution in the mainstream media. An offensive was launched on the European Union (EU) to relax its policy on GM imports and cultivation. At present only one GM crop, a GM maize, is approved for cultivation in Europe. The European Commission department of agriculture has joined forces with the biotech industry and the animal feed industry in claiming that it is the EU’s GM policy that is harming Europe’s livestock industry.

Leading the charge of the pro-GM brigade in Europe is Britain, in its role as chief ally of the largest GM exporter the United States. The UK Independent reported that [1], “Ministers are preparing to open the way for genetically modified crops to be grown in Britain on the grounds that they could help combat the global food crisis.” The main source quoted in the article is environment minister Phil Woolas. The night before promoting the GM agenda, the article said, Woolas held talks with the Agricultural Biotechnology Council, a biotech industry PR group representing Monsanto, Bayer, BASF, Dow, Pioneer (DuPont), and Syngenta. This industry lobby group is run by Lexington Communications, a PR agency intimately connected to the New Labour government [2]. The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has fallen in line, calling on the EU to relax its rules on importing GM animal feed in order to cut spiralling food prices [3]. In addition, a new report by the UK Cabinet Office on the food and feed crises focuses almost exclusively on the role of the EU's GMO regulations in creating delays for GM feed crop approvals [4].

Critics say that such scaremongering is a cynical attempt to force the EU to drop its “zero tolerance” approach to GM and GM-contaminated imports. Bob Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, said at UK's National Farmers Union (NFU) conference [5], "I think the debate about higher prices and being able to meet the demand of people in the world for food is a perfect opportunity to make the case [for GMO crops]... We may have a window of opportunity here and I would encourage you to exploit that."

Hiroshima Marks Bomb Anniversary With Hope for US Change

Agence France-Presse reports: "The mayor of Hiroshima on Wednesday urged the next US president to work to abolish atomic weapons as the city marked the 63rd anniversary of the world's first nuclear attack. Some 45,000 people, including Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, gathered at a memorial to the dead within sight of the A-bomb dome, a former exhibition hall burned to a skeleton by the bomb's incinerating heat. They stood up and offered silent prayers at 8:15 am, the exact moment in 1945 when a single US bomb instantly killed more than 140,000 people and fatally injured tens of thousands of others with radiation or horrific burns. Delivering a speech at the memorial, Hiroshima mayor Tadatoshi Akiba noted the United States was one of only three countries which oppose a UN resolution submitted by Japan calling for the abolition of nuclear arms."

Hiroshima: a wake-up call to our neglected conscience

63 years ago, for the first time in the history of mankind, US military dropped a nuclear bomb. Its target on August 6th at 8.15 am was the city of Hiroshima in South Japan. Only three days later, the second nuclear bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. 140,000 people died in Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945 and 73,000 a short time later in Nagasaki.

Targeting civilians: The Path to Hiroshima and Nagasaki

CounterPunch
by Kevin Young

08/10/08

How did the sort of logic that condoned the targeting of civilian populations prevail over the countervailing moral norms codified in international law in previous decades? As historians have pointed out, the development of the military tactic of ‘area bombing’ early in the war was a crucial stepping stone to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Area bombing refers to the aerial use of explosive and/or incendiary bombs against entire geographic areas, usually cities, rather than against conventional military targets. The logic of area bombing expands the definition of ‘military’ to include industries, residential areas, and even the working population of laborers involved in economic production...

The Airtel-Vodafone equipment was delivered to the site on Monday and installation work began yesterday.

A Slow-Mo Meltdown

For The New York Times, Paul Krugman writes: "A year ago, as the outlines of the current financial crisis were just becoming clear, I suggested that this crisis, unlike a superficially similar crisis in 1998, wouldn't end quickly. It hasn't. The good news, I guess, is that we've been experiencing a sort of slow-motion meltdown, lacking in dramatic Black Fridays and such. The gradual way the crisis has unfolded has led to an angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin debate among economists about whether what we're suffering really deserves to be called a recession. Yet even a slo-mo crisis can do a lot of damage if it goes on for a year and counting."

When they reach it, there will be a sharp slowdown in the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) and other emerging markets.

Follow This Dime

Thomas Frank writes for TomDispatch.com: "Washington is the city where the scandals happen. Every American knows this, but we also believe, if only vaguely, that the really monumental scandals are a thing of the past, that the golden age of misgovernment-for-profit ended with the cavalry charge and the robber barons, at about the same time presidents stopped wearing beards. I moved to Washington in 2003, just in time for the comeback, for the hundred-year flood. At first it was only a trickle in the basement, a little stream released accidentally by the president's friends at Enron. Before long, though, the levees were failing all over town, and the city was inundated with a muddy torrent of graft. How are we to dissect a deluge like this one? We might begin by categorizing the earmarks handed out by Congress, sorting the foolish earmarks from the costly earmarks from the earmarks made strictly on a cash basis."

Are Contractors Above the Law?

For The Washington Independent, Daphne Eviatar writes: "In January of 2008, Staff Sgt. Ryan Maseth, 24, was electrocuted while showering in his Baghdad barracks. His death prompted last week's congressional report concluding that defense contractor KBR, (until a year ago a subsidiary of the oil services giant Halliburton) was well aware that the electrical system in Maseth's complex was faulty. An accident like this, the report found, was bound to happen. But this report also now raises a larger and thornier question about military defense contractors: can they be held legally liable for their actions - or inactions? Will anyone be held responsible for Maseth's death?"

Book Says White House Ordered Iraq-WMD Forgery

Mike Allen reports for Politico.com: "A new book by the author Ron Suskind claims that the White House ordered the CIA to forge a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein. Suskind writes in 'The Way of the World,' to be published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery - adamantly denied by the White House - was designed to portray a false link between Hussein's regime and al Qaeda as a justification for the Iraq war. The author also claims that the Bush administration had information from a top Iraqi intelligence official 'that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq - intelligence they received in plenty of time to stop an invasion.'"

Suskind Stands by White House WMD Forgery Claim

According to MSNBC.com: "Despite adamant denials by both the White House and the CIA, journalist Ron Suskind Wednesday stood by his allegation that the Bush administration concocted a fake letter purporting to show a link between Saddam Hussein's regime and al-Qaida as a justification for the Iraq war. 'It's all on the record,' Suskind told Meredith Vieira on TODAY. Two former CIA officers denied that they or the spy agency faked an Iraqi intelligence document, as they are quoted as saying in Suskind's book 'The Way of the World,' published Tuesday. 'I never received direction from George Tenet (CIA director at the time) or anyone else in my chain of command to fabricate a document as outlined in Mr. Suskind's book,' said Robert Richer, the CIA's former deputy director of clandestine operations."

Kay Steiger, RH Reality Check: "Heartbreaking stories of sexual assault perpetrated against female soldiers and military contractors, including those of Maria Lauterbach, Jamie Leigh Jones and Lavena Johnson, have shown that women in the military face risk harassment, rape and even murder."

Stinging Tentacles Offer Hint of Oceans' Decline

Elizabeth Rosenthal, The New York Times: "From Spain to New York, to Australia, Japan and Hawaii, jellyfish are becoming more numerous and more widespread, and they are showing up in places where they have rarely been seen before, scientists say. The explosion of jellyfish populations, scientists say, reflects a combination of severe overfishing of natural predators, like tuna, sharks, and swordfish; rising sea temperatures caused in part by global warming; and pollution that has depleted oxygen levels in coastal shallows."

Democrats Unrelenting in Oversight of Bush Administration

Peter Grier, The Christian Science Monitor: "The Democratic-led Congress appears intent on using its oversight powers to investigate the Bush administration until the day the latter packs up and walks out of the White House. Oversight hearings and reports have been as common as lobbyists on Capitol Hill since the Democrats swept the 2006 elections. In July alone, hearings covered a range of subjects including allegations of faulty wiring installed by US contractors in Iraq, possibly misleading testimony from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Stephen Johnson, and charges that politics guided hiring of career workers in the Justice Department."

The Compromise "Drill Anywhere" Plan

Dean Baker for Truthout: "Senator McCain and the Republicans in Congress are calling Senator Obama and the Democrats environmental wimps for refusing to allow the oil industry to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, environmentally sensitive offshore areas and anywhere else they please. The Republicans are claiming that the Democrats don't care about Joe Sixpack, who now has to pay $4 a gallon for his gas. Nor do they care that most of this oil is now imported."

Bush running out of time on nuclear "threats"

Iran's non-answer highlights that Bush has run out of time to see through either deal and another with nuclear-armed India. That means the next U.S. president will have to pick up the pieces, and possibly change the terms of any deals.

FBI Was Told To Blame Anthrax Scare On Al Qaeda By White House

BY JAMES GORDON MEEK

"They really wanted to blame somebody in the Middle East," the retired senior FBI official told The News.

FBI Used Aggressive Tactics in Anthrax Probe

Pete Yost, of The Associated Press, reports: "Before killing himself last week, Army scientist Bruce Ivins told friends that government agents had stalked him and his family for months, offered his son $2.5 million to rat him out and tried to turn his hospitalized daughter against him with photographs of dead anthrax victims. The pressure on Ivins was extreme, a high-risk strategy that has failed the FBI before. The government was determined to find the villain in the 2001 anthrax attacks; it was too many years without a solution to the case that shocked and terrified a post-9/11 nation. The last thing the FBI needed was another embarrassment."

Identifying the Anthrax Killer

The New York Times writes: "The F.B.I. seems convinced that it has finally solved the long-festering case of who mailed the anthrax letters that killed five people in 2001. Yet its description of the evidence pointing to a mentally disturbed Army bioweapons expert as the sole culprit leaves us uncertain about whether investigators have pulled off a brilliant coup after a bumbling start, or are prematurely declaring victory, despite a lack of hard, incontrovertible proof."

US accused of backing terrorism in Pakistan

Who's Really Running Iraq?

The success of 'the Surge' is becoming almost received wisdom in the US. This is strange since, if the US strategy did win such an important victory, why do America generals need more soldiers, currently 147,000 of them, in Iraq than they did before 'the Surge' started?
