A win is a win

Common Dreams

There are two ways to view the news that the House Judiciary Committee will be holding a hearing on impeachable crimes by President George W. Bush. One view would be that this is all a charade and that after all, it will not be a real impeachment hearing, but rather, simply a hearing into the impeachable crimes of the Bush administration. As committee Chair Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) put it, ‘We’re not doing impeachment, but he [Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who introduced 36 articles of impeachment] can talk about it.’ Viewed that way, this is not such a big deal. Rep. Kucinich gets to make his case that the president is committing high crimes and misdemeanors and abuses of power and war crimes, but then Congressional Democrats will continue to ignore all the crimes as it has done since taking control of Congress in November 2006. But a second way to view this is as a significant victory over the quisling Congressional leadership, which has been ducking its responsibility to defend the Constitution and to stand up for the rule of law not just since November 2006, but since the inception of the Bush/Cheney presidency...

How the public health and safety were routinely subordinated to corporate interests

EPA on Trial

In These Times's Joel Bleifuss writes: "Former EPA head Christine Todd Whitman interrupted investigations into her agency's endorsement of sewage sludge as fertilizer, according to the former chief investigator of the EPA's National Ombudsman Office. As the chief investigator for the EPA's National Ombudsman Office, Kaufman had a bird's eye view of how the public health and safety were routinely subordinated to corporate interests. For more than six years, Hugh Kaufman has been battling the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), his employer for 37 years, with a whistleblower lawsuit."

Judge Allows Testimony by Guantanamo Detainees

Josh Meyer, of The Los Angeles Times, reports: "Osama bin Laden's former driver can use testimony by alleged Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and some other detained Al Qaeda operatives in his upcoming military trial at Guantanamo Bay because it might help exonerate him, a military judge said Monday. Defense lawyers said at a hearing that they wanted to call Mohammed and seven other prospective witnesses in the case of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, the first detainee at the U.S. naval base in Cuba to be scheduled for trial. If the proceedings begin next week as planned, it will mark the first time the United States has held a military tribunal since World War II."

We Need the Full Truth Regarding Actions Sufficient to Avert Catastrophic Climate Change

ACTION ALERT UPDATE

Dear Al Gore, We Need the Full Truth Regarding Actions Sufficient to Avert Catastrophic Climate Change

TAKE ACTION
Encourage Mr. Gore to tell the full truth regarding the magnitude of actions required for climate change solutions, including advocating for an end to coal and ancient forest logging, and personal sacrifice including reduced consumption

http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=al_gore_full_truth

Al Gore is a global hero for the work he has done since leaving government to promote awareness regarding climate change. Yet I am sure he would agree that this and other long- standing awareness building efforts have failed woefully to turn such awareness into sufficient climate policy actions. Mr. Gore's efforts continue to do a disservice to prospects for achieving global ecological sustainability by downplaying the immense social and personal transformations necessary, including personal sacrifice, to build a low-carbon economic system that does not further undermine our shared biosphere. And frankly, it is sad to see someone of Mr. Gore's skills, resources and contacts not choose to lead by example and seek to dramatically reduce his own carbon emissions. Tell Mr. Gore if he really believes climate change is truly a global emergency threatening civilization, he should be leading by example and organizing mass protests in support of a rigorous and sufficient biocentric climate plan.

TAKE ACTION NOW:

White House lobbyist offered access for cash

A lobbyist with close ties to the White House reportedly was captured on undercover video offering access to key Bush administration figures — including Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice — in return for large donations to a library commemorating the Bush presidency. The Sunday Times of London reported that Stephen Payne, who claims to have raised more than $1 million for the Republican party in recent years, said he would arrange meetings with senior administration officials in return for a payment of ’several hundred thousand dollars’ toward the library in Texas. During an undercover investigation by the newspaper, Payne was asked to arrange meetings in Washington for an exiled former central Asian president...

Beverley residents' new phone mast fight

07:00 - 15-July-2008

A GROUP of Beverley residents are bracing themselves for battle once again after phone giant O2 put in an application to extend a mast in the town centre.

In 2003, the Beverley Mast Action Group was set up to fight plans for a larger replacement mast on the Beverley Town Cricket and Recreation Ground in Norwood Park.

Residents won the day after the application was refused and O2 decided not to appeal.

But now, five years on, O2 has put in another application to extend the current mast by five metres and add on extra telecommunications equipment.

Fannie, Freddie Spent $200 Million Lobbying

dyn.politico.com — Over the past decade, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have spent nearly $200 million on lobbying and campaign contributions. The two government-chartered companies run a highly sophisticated lobbying operation, with deep-pocketed lobbyists in Washington and scores of local Fannie- and Freddie-sponsored homeowner groups ready to pressure lawmakers back home. Fannie and Freddie's aggressive political maneuvering has helped stave off increased regulation and preserve special benefits such as exemption from state and local income taxes and the ability to borrow at low rates. When their stock prices took a dive last week, their government allies extended another helping hand with a plan for the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve and, possibly, Congress to shore up the companies.

Suspect Soldiers: Did Crimes in US Foretell Violence in Iraq?

Russell Carollo reports for The Sacramento Bee: "A yearlong examination of military and civilian records by The Sacramento Bee involving hundreds of troops who entered the services since the Iraq war began identified 120 cases of people whose backgrounds should have raised the suspicions of military recruiters, including felony convictions and serious drug, alcohol or mental health problems. Of those, 70 later were involved in controversial or criminal incidents in Iraq."

Stärkung der Bürgerrechte statt Kosmetik

14. Juli 2008

The bipartisan surveillance state

Independent Institute
by Anthony Gregory

07/11/08

The Democratic Congress passed and Bush signed the ‘FISA Amendments Act of 2008,’ legalizing the president’s longstanding illegal wiretapping program. The law allows broad warrantless surveillance of Americans in the United States, so long as the call or e-mail is thought to be international. Eavesdropping on domestic communications is legal for a week before court papers even have to be filed. The telecom companies that cooperated with Bush are immune from civil lawsuits. Most important, the administration’s illegal conduct has been retroactively approved and future administrations have wider powers than ever to spy on Americans. The Democratic leadership and virtually all Congressional Republicans approved the law. In a complete reversal of his campaign promise, so did Senator Barack Obama...

Proteste gegen Sarkozys Atom-Renaissance in Paris

Tricastin: "Nicht irgendein Zwischenfall"

Bush White House crimes worse than Nixon's

The Real-Life "24" of Summer 2008

Frank Rich writes for The New York Times: "We know what a criminal White House looks like from 'The Final Days,' Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's classic account of Richard Nixon's unraveling. The cauldron of lies, paranoia and illegal surveillance boiled over, until it was finally every man for himself as desperate courtiers scrambled to save their reputations and, in a few patriotic instances, their country... The latest and perhaps most chilling example arrives this week from Jane Mayer of The New Yorker, long a relentless journalist on the war-on-terror torture beat. Her book 'The Dark Side' connects the dots of her own past reporting and that of her top-tier colleagues (including James Risen and Scott Shane of The New York Times) to portray a White House that, like its prototype, savaged its enemies within almost as ferociously as it did the Constitution."

Amber alert!

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

07/14/08

Wurmser gives the odds of the Israelis attacking Iran before Bush leaves office as ’slightly, slightly above 50-50.’ If that happens, then it is only a matter of time — a very short time — before the U.S. is involved in a large-scale conflict with Iran that will send oil prices skyrocketing past $300 per barrel and bring the world economy to a screeching halt. Not only that, but war with Tehran will upend the American political landscape and give John McCain more than a fighting chance to beat frontrunner Barack Obama. In this context, the Israeli pressure for military action can be seen as a direct attempt to influence an American election that, so far, is not going to their liking...
