Home Not-So-Sweet Home

Paul Krugman of The New York Times writes: "While homeownership rose as the housing bubble inflated, temporarily giving Mr. Bush something to boast about, it plunged - especially for African-Americans - when the bubble popped. Today, the percentage of American families owning their own homes is no higher than it was six years ago, and it's a good bet that by the time Mr. Bush leaves the White House homeownership will be lower than it was when he moved in."

In a First, Court Overturns Guantanamo Hearing

For McClatchy Newspapers, Marisa Taylor reports: "A federal appeals court for the first time has rejected the military's designation of a Guantanamo detainee as an enemy combatant. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit overturned as 'invalid' a military tribunal's conclusion that prisoner Huzaifa Parhat is an enemy combatant. The court directed the Pentagon either to release or transfer Parhat or to hold a new tribunal hearing 'consistent with the court's opinion.'"

In Europa unerwünscht und was jetzt? Bleiberecht statt Abschiebepolitik!

Occupations abroad, erosion of civil liberties at home

Guardian [UK]
by Gary Younge

06/23/08

It is a brutal allegory in which Guantanamo is not the exception but the rule: a grotesque exemplar of the Bush administration’s reflexive and opportunistic response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, from the bombing of Iraq to the phone-tapping of its own citizens. Like Abu Ghraib and the ‘black sites’ of rendition, the violations that have taken place there are systemic and systematic. Like the broader war on terror, they have been characterised by criminality and ineptitude. The camp has not hosted a single trial, and only 19 of the remaining 270 detainees have been charged.

Congress calls for crackdown on oil “speculation”

Lawmakers continue to blame large investors for their role in propping up oil prices, pointing out Monday that speculation in crude futures has nearly doubled since 2000. Pension funds, Wall Street banks and other large investors that have no intention of taking delivery of fuel have increasingly pumped money into contracts for oil and other commodities as a hedge against inflation when the dollar falls...

How Should the Middle East invest its Rising Trade Surplus?

Aide: Terror Attacks "Big Advantage" to McCain

Edward Luce and Andrew Ward report for The Financial Times: "John McCain's right-hand man hit a raw nerve on Monday when he said another terrorist attack on US soil would prove a 'big advantage' to the Republican nominee's general election chances. The comments by Charlie Black, who is arguably Mr McCain's most experienced adviser, put into words what many Republicans and Democrats have privately been stating for months."

The Same Old Politics of Terror

The Boston Globe: "When asked about the effect of another terrorist attack on American soil, John McCain's chief strategist, Charlie Black, responded rashly and bluntly. 'Certainly it would be a big advantage' for McCain, Black told Fortune magazine recently. Similarly, the strategist described the assassination of Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto in December as 'an unfortunate event,' but said 'it helped us' in the contest for the nomination. It would be unfair to McCain, and to Black, to take this analysis as an indication that the Republican team is hoping for or counting on a terrorist incident. Still, Black's observation does bring up the question of whether the threat of terrorism will help Republicans, or whether the politics of security have shifted since the last presidential election."

The Price of Hunger

The Los Angeles Times editorial board poses the question, "What would it really cost to end global hunger? The United Nations estimates that it would take at least $30 billion per year to solve the food crisis, mainly by boosting agricultural productivity in the developing world. Over the decade that it would take to make sustainable improvements in the lives of the 862 million undernourished people, that amounts to $300 billion. Three hundred billion dollars is a lot of money, and the U.S. government won't foot the bill alone. But it's less than half of 1% of the world's combined gross domestic products, not an unreasonable sum to invest in ending the misery and degradation of hunger. After all, Congress shelled out $21 billion last year for foreign aid and this week it approved $162 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for fiscal 2009. The U.S. spent $340 billion in 2006 alone on public and private research and development. Directing just one-tenth of that seed money to sustainable, high-yield agriculture in the developing world could trigger a second Green Revolution."

Life, Liberty, Water

In YES! Magazine, Maude Barlow writes: "It's a colossal failure of political foresight that water has not emerged as an important issue in the U.S. Presidential campaign. The links between oil, war, and U.S. foreign policy are well known. But water-whether we treat it as a public good or as a commodity that can be bought and sold-will in large part determine whether our future is peaceful or perilous."

Reporters Say Networks Block War Reports

Brian Stelter, of The New York Times, reports: "Getting a story on the evening news isn't easy for any correspondent. And for reporters in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is especially hard, according to Lara Logan, the chief foreign correspondent for CBS News. So she has devised a solution when she is talking to the network. 'Generally what I say is, "I'm holding the armor-piercing R.P.G.,"' she said last week in an appearance on 'The Daily Show,' referring to the initials for rocket-propelled grenade. '"It's aimed at the bureau chief, and if you don't put my story on the air, I'm going to pull the trigger."' Ms. Logan let a sly just-kidding smile sneak through as she spoke, but her point was serious. Five years into the war in Iraq and nearly seven years into the war in Afghanistan, getting news of the conflicts onto television is harder than ever."

Iraq or the economy?

The Free Liberal
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

06/20/08

The cost of this particular war is enormous, and therefore its of great importance. There is no single issue that is more important at this particular time. The war has, of course, made us less safe as a nation and damaged our credibility with allies and hostile nations alike. Moreover, years of growing deficits have been spurred on by the high price tag of war, and the decision to pay that price primarily by supplemental spending rather than traditional ‘on-budget’ accounting. War takes what would otherwise be productive economic capacity and transfers both that capacity, and the wealth it would generate in normal, peaceful, times into far less economically viable activities. It also impacts budget priorities in ways that are detrimental to our nation...

The value of the impeachment process

The Union

There are few strategies that are used to control society that are more effective then ‘divide and conquer.’ Another is fear. Today America is more divided than at any time in recent history and fear has become patriotic. Why? Because we are unsure of ourselves. We all think that our opinions are valid. We immerse ourselves in media and social contacts that support our world view. We forget that every coin has two sides and then we find ourselves distracted by useless and pointless conflicts...

IMF says US economy is set to 'stagnate'

The US economy is likely to "stagnate" in the second half of this year, the International Monetary Fund warned on Friday, as stock markets in the US and Europe fell to their lowest levels since March and US bank shares hit a five-year low.

IMF Finally Knocks on Uncle Sam's Door

By David Hirst

The fact that the IMF is knocking on the very doors of its parents and waving legal papers about who lost the house, the car and the kids will, if the past is anything to go by, be buried in the US by pom-pom waving on CNBC telling all what a great time it is to buy.

Iran ready for all military possibilities, says speaker

Iran would be ready for all military possibilities including an Israeli attack on the country's nuclear facilities, IRNA news agency quoted parliament speaker Ali Larijani as saying Sunday. "We are ready for all possibilities but if they (Israel) really planned to take such an unwise action, then they would face much more damage than us" Larijani told IRNA.

Asset-price Inflation is Giving Way to Debt Deflation

The Game is Over. There Won't Be a Rebound

By Mike Whitney

Bernanke is merely being polite in not rubbing the faces of European and Asian governments in the fact that unless they are willing to make a structural break and change the world monetary system radically, they will remain powerless to avoid giving the United States a free ride - including a free ride for its military spending and war in the Near East.

These Wars Are About Oil, Not Democracy

No Blood for... er... um...

For TomDispatch.com, Tom Engelhardt writes: "More than five years after the invasion of Iraq - just in case you were still waiting - the oil giants finally hit the front page. Last Thursday, the New York Times with this headline: 'Deals with Iraq Are Set to Bring Oil Giants Back.' (Subhead: 'Rare No-bid Contracts, A Foothold for Western Companies Seeking Future Rewards.') And who were these four giants? ExxonMobil, Shell, the French company Total and BP (formerly British Petroleum). What these firms got were mere 'service contracts' - as in servicing Iraq's oil fields - not the sort of 'production sharing agreements' that President Bush's representatives in Baghdad once dreamed of, and that would have left them in charge of those fields. Still, it was clearly a start."

Torturegate

CounterPunch
by Chris Floyd

06/22/08

This has been one of the most extraordinary weeks in modern American history. The many isolated streams of evidence about the Bush Administration’s torture system — and the direct responsibility of the Administration’s highest officials for this vast crime — have now converged into a mighty flood: undeniable, unignorable, pouring through the halls of Congress and media newsrooms, lashing at the walls of the White House itself. In the course of the past few days, a series of events has laid bare the stinking sepsis at the heart of the Bush Regime for all to see...

Where’s the anger?

CounterPunch
by Howard Lisnoff

06/23/08

My significant objection to the ‘Support Our Troops’ slogan, which has sometimes taken on the specter of cant, is that blanket support of the military allows for the glossing over of the imperialistic objectives of the U.S. government in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, wholehearted support is owed to those who have suffered the consequences of those wars; for those who have entertained thoughts of resistance to the military machine; and to soldiers who have become resisters. That support, however, must be tempered with the realities of Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay and Haditha, so-called extraordinary rendition, the loss of many civil liberties at home, and the policies of torture and abuse that have been the hallmarks of the Bush-Cheney regime. The Nuremberg Principles were clear on the individual’s responsibility for war crimes. The Principles apply to both individual soldiers and heads of state...

Imperial “justice”

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

06/23/08

Americans have such a sense of … drama. When they commit war crimes, they revel in it — and rationalize it in the name of necessity. That’s what happened after Haditha, where the defense lawyers for the Haditha executioners stoutly maintained, along with their clients, that the defendants’ actions were defensive in nature, because they believed they were under fire and in danger. Company commander Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich to this day avers that he did the right thing, and that he would do it again...
