Risk of a Raw Materials Bubble

Les Echos's reporter Nicolas Madelaine wonders, "... aren't financial investors making the prices of foodstuffs and oil climb artificially? In spite of the assurance from financial milieus - which maintain that speculators merely go along with increases essentially due to the progress of physical supply and demand - this question is justified. For the debate is far from being settled."

A Tale of Two Conservatives: Comparing Bush and Hoover on the Economy

David Madland and Jacob Pawlak write for Center for American Progress: "It may seem premature to compare President George W. Bush to Herbert Hoover, the president who helped steer the economy into the Great Depression in 1929, and then presided over steady economic deterioration until the end of his term in 1933. After all, the current economic downturn under President Bush’s watch hasn’t even officially been declared a recession, while under Hoover the United States experienced four straight years of severe economic decline. Yet close inspection of the economic track records and ideology of these two presidents reveals that they are quite similar."

Autofahrer klagen gegen Kfz-Massenscanning

Scientists warn against GM foods

By Rashme Sehgal

Asian Age, June 5 2008

New Delhi: Scientists warn that the genetically modified (GM) foods that are set to hit the market will do so without having undergone mandatory safety assessments.

Thirty-two crops are currently being researched across 111 government and 50 private institutes with 14 having entered the trial stage.

These, they decry, will increase health risks to the general public.

BT brinjal is expected to hit the market within the next six months without undergoing the necessary trials. Switzerland and other European countries have placed a moratorium of 12 years for all GM foods.

Dr Pushpa Bhargava, a genetic biologist and former vice-chairman of the National Knowledge Commission, warned against the flouting of scientific norms to push GM foods into the market.

Speaking at a "Food Safety, Bio Safety and GM Foods" meet organised by Navdanya, Dr Bhargava stated that no comprehensive risk assessment had been done on the effect of Bt plants on either the soil or the surrounding fauna.

Dr V.S. Vijayan, chairman of Kerala State Biodiversity Board, pointed out that tests currently being done to study toxicity and allergenecity were being conducted by Monsanto, the world's largest supplier of seeds, which is pushing for this technology in India, or else by groups who received the samples by the applicant itself.

Key chronic toxicity tests that have long term effects that can result in cancer and other diseases have not been conducted.

It was shocking that in West Bengal, trials on Bt okra started in mid-August 2007 on the basis of approval by the panchayat members.

"What knowledge do panchayats have about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and GM foods especially since they are susceptible to all kinds of pressure? The State Biotechnology Coordination Committee had not approved these trials and the agriculture university monitoring them had given it a damning report," Dr Bhargava added.

Many scientists believe many of the tests being claimed may never have been conducted in the first place.

Think Simply.. Think Wisely. Curb Semantics. Speak the Truth.

Senate Panel Rejects Case for War

Greg Miller, of The Los Angeles Times: "In a long-awaited report, the Senate Intelligence Committee rebuked President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney today for making prewar claims -- particularly that Iraq had close ties to Al Qaeda -- that were not backed by available intelligence. The report, which was supported by some Republicans but criticized by many others, accuses the president and other members of his administration of repeatedly exaggerating the evidence of an Al Qaeda connection to take advantage of the charged climate after the September 11th attacks."

Plan for mobile phone mast on Chevin refused

By Jim Jack

CONSERVATIONISTS are celebrating a decision to kick out a scheme that would have put a second phone mast up within Otley's Green Belt.

It was a blunder by Leeds City Council (LCC) that allowed Orange to erect the first in Thompson's Yard, on East Chevin Road two years ago - a mast LCC is still trying to have removed.

Last month residents were preparing for a second fight when an application to put up an 02 mast on the same site was lodged.

House demands action on mobile phone masts

IMMEDIATE measures must be taken in order to protect the public, and especially children, from the electromagnetic radiation of mobile telephone masts, the Chairman of the House Health Committee said yesterday.

The Committee had discussed the dangers of having masts in such close proximity to schools and other areas where children gather.

“It is well known that small children, infants and embryos are very sensitive to the harmful energy of electromagnetic radiation and for this reason, the public is especially sensitised to the issue,” said Eleni Theocharous of DISY after the meeting.

Will the real John McCain please stand up?

The Nation

Actually, I don’t expect him to, now that he is the Republican presidential candidate, pandering to the irrationalities that drive his party. Nor is it likely that the fawning mass media will pressure him to the point of clarity. But I remain genuinely confused as to what makes him tick. McCain is the most confounding of candidates, veering as he does from the stance of provincial reaction to sophisticated enlightenment within an almost instantaneous time frame. He did it last week, when he blasted Barack Obama for being soft in appraising America’s adversaries while in the same moment, calling for sensible rapprochement with Vladimir Putin’s Russia on nuclear arms control. While such unpredictability can be appealing in a senator, it is unnerving in a possible President...

McCain: I'd Spy on Americans Secretly, Too

If elected president, Senator John McCain would reserve the right to run his own warrantless wiretapping program against Americans, based on the theory that the president's wartime powers trump federal criminal statutes and court oversight, according to a statement released by his campaign Monday.

Adviser Says McCain Backs Bush Wiretaps

Charlie Savae, of The New York Times: "A top adviser to Senator John McCain says Mr. McCain believes that President Bush's program of wiretapping without warrants was lawful, a position that appears to bring him into closer alignment with the sweeping theories of executive authority pushed by the Bush administration legal team. In a letter posted online by National Review this week, the adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, said Mr. McCain believed that the Constitution gave Mr. Bush the power to authorize the National Security Agency to monitor Americans' international phone calls and e-mail without warrants, despite a 1978 federal statute that required court oversight of surveillance."

Easy-money policies created this problem

Bernanke's Speech: "It's all China's Fault, Really"

By Mike Whitney

Thanks to the Fed's ham-fisted monetary policies, a Force-5 economic hurricane is presently looming right offshore and there's nothing Bernanke or Paulson can do to stop it from touching down. If Bernanke cuts rates; commodities (and oil) will skyrocket and foreign investors will ditch the dollar. If he raises rates, banks will fail and the housing crash will accelerate. There are no good options.

Easy-money policies created this problem

Tennessean
by Edward Burgess

07/21/08

The announcements by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac really say nothing new. The ultimate backing of the federal government has always been implicit in the AAA credit rating of these agencies’ obligations. What’s new is that these gentlemen felt that it needed to be said at all. … Dangers abound when, as The Economist magazine puts it, ‘profits are privatized and risks are socialized.’ Let us not forget it was the Fed’s easy-money policies and longstanding bipartisan efforts of politicians to subsidize home buying that helped create this bubble in the first place...
