Victory in Iraq or "Surrender"

Truthout's Camillo "Mac" Bica writes, "Even should we disregard the accusations of Scott McClellan and give the Bush administration the sizable benefit of the doubt that their preemption was an honest mistake, that does not somehow alter the moral and legal value of the invasion and occupation. Nor does it excuse the destruction of the Iraqi state and the deaths or displacement of millions of innocents. Nor does it diminish their culpability for war crimes."

Pentagon Debates Development of Offensive Cyberspace Capabilities

Julian E. Barnes, The Los Angeles Times: "Igniting a provocative new debate, senior military officials are pushing the Pentagon to go on the offensive in cyberspace by developing the ability to attack other nations' computer systems, rather than concentrating on defending America's electronic security. Under the most sweeping proposals, military experts would acquire the know-how to commandeer the unmanned aerial drones of adversaries, disable enemy warplanes in mid-flight and cut off electricity at precise moments to strategic locations, such as military installations, while sparing humanitarian facilities, such as hospitals."

Norfolk hospital asked to remove paging system

Board told roof-top device emitting microwave radiation unsafe for patients

Posted By BY KATE SCHWASS, SUN MEDIA

The Norfolk General Hospital board of directors has been asked to consider removing a paging service from its roof because of the microwave radiation it emits.

"I'm sure other locations could be found in the community that could be safer," Anca Gaston said during a presentation to the board this week. "My recommendation would be to have it moved."

'Fight phone mast'- plea by councillor

Published Date: 06 June 2008
By Staff Copy

THE chairman of Barwick and Scholes Parish Council has urged residents in Barwick to keep fighting the battle against the recent planning decision to increase the size of an O2 phone mast in the village.

At Monday’s parish council meeting, Coun Ben Hogan told residents to fight the Government Planning Inspectorate’s decision to give the mast the go-ahead by protesting to MPs, Leeds City councillors and the phone company itself.

O2 recently appealed against Leeds City Council’s refusal to give it planning permission for the new mast.

Will the real John McCain please stand up?

The Nation
by Robert Scheer

06/04/08

Actually, I don’t expect him to, now that he is the Republican presidential candidate, pandering to the irrationalities that drive his party. Nor is it likely that the fawning mass media will pressure him to the point of clarity. But I remain genuinely confused as to what makes him tick. McCain is the most confounding of candidates, veering as he does from the stance of provincial reaction to sophisticated enlightenment within an almost instantaneous time frame. He did it last week, when he blasted Barack Obama for being soft in appraising America’s adversaries while in the same moment, calling for sensible rapprochement with Vladimir Putin’s Russia on nuclear arms control. While such unpredictability can be appealing in a senator, it is unnerving in a possible President...

McCain: I'd Spy on Americans Secretly, Too

If elected president, Senator John McCain would reserve the right to run his own warrantless wiretapping program against Americans, based on the theory that the president's wartime powers trump federal criminal statutes and court oversight, according to a statement released by his campaign Monday.

Adviser Says McCain Backs Bush Wiretaps

Charlie Savae, of The New York Times: "A top adviser to Senator John McCain says Mr. McCain believes that President Bush's program of wiretapping without warrants was lawful, a position that appears to bring him into closer alignment with the sweeping theories of executive authority pushed by the Bush administration legal team. In a letter posted online by National Review this week, the adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, said Mr. McCain believed that the Constitution gave Mr. Bush the power to authorize the National Security Agency to monitor Americans' international phone calls and e-mail without warrants, despite a 1978 federal statute that required court oversight of surveillance."

Easy-money policies created this problem

Bernanke's Speech: "It's all China's Fault, Really"

By Mike Whitney

Thanks to the Fed's ham-fisted monetary policies, a Force-5 economic hurricane is presently looming right offshore and there's nothing Bernanke or Paulson can do to stop it from touching down. If Bernanke cuts rates; commodities (and oil) will skyrocket and foreign investors will ditch the dollar. If he raises rates, banks will fail and the housing crash will accelerate. There are no good options.

The announcements by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac really say nothing new. The ultimate backing of the federal government has always been implicit in the AAA credit rating of these agencies’ obligations. What’s new is that these gentlemen felt that it needed to be said at all. … Dangers abound when, as The Economist magazine puts it, ‘profits are privatized and risks are socialized.’ Let us not forget it was the Fed’s easy-money policies and longstanding bipartisan efforts of politicians to subsidize home buying that helped create this bubble in the first place...

Großangriff auf die Grundrechte

4. Juni 2008

Ban GMOs Now!

ISIS Press Release 04/06/08

Dr. Mae-Wan Ho warns that further indulgence in GMOs will severely damage our chances of surviving the food crisis and global warming; organic agriculture and localised food systems are the way forward

Invited lecture at conference on TRADITIONAL SEEDS OUR NATIONAL TREASURE AND HERITAGE -Traditional and Organic Agriculture instead of GMO, 17 May 2008, Bewelder, Warsaw, Poland

The Brave New World of GM Science

In 1994, I met some of the most remarkable leaders in the Third World: Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher (Institute of Sustainable Development, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), Martin Khor (Third World Network, Penang, Malaysia), and Vandana Shiva (Navdanya, New Delhi, India), who persuaded me to look into genetically modified organisms (GMOs), especially GM crops, which they rightly saw as a special threat to small family farmers. The biotech industry was promising miracle GM crops that would boost yield to feed the world, improve nutrition, and clean up and protect the environment. Monsanto’s Flavr Savr tomato, the first GM crop, had just been commercialised, though it turned out to be a complete flop, and was withdrawn several years later..

The biotech industry’s aggressive campaign of disinformation and manipulation of science did nothing to obscure the signs that the dream would soon turn into nightmare; and I said so in my book first published in 1997/1998 [1] Genetic Engineering Dream or Nightmare, the Brave New World of Bad Science and Big Business, which became an international bestseller, translated into many languages, and recently reprinted with an extended introduction to coincide with its translation into Indonesian. Everything predicted in that book has happened. It also explained why the science behind GM is obsolete; a story elaborated further in Living with the Fluid Genome [2] published in 2003.

Genetic modification based on an obsolete theory and hence ineffective and dangerous

Genetic engineering of plants and animals began in the mid 1970s in the belief that the genome (the totality of all the genetic material of a species) is constant and static, and that the characteristics of organism are simply hardwired in their genome. But geneticists soon discovered that the genome is remarkably dynamic and ‘fluid’, and constantly in conversation with the environment. This determines which genes are turned on, when, where, by how much and for how long. Moreover, the genetic material itself could also be marked or changed according to experience, and the influence passed on to the next generation.

The best thing about the human genome project is to finally explode the myth of genetic determinism, revealing the layers of molecular complexity that transmit, interpret and rewrite the genetic texts [3] (Life Beyond the Central Dogma series, SiS 24). These processes are precisely orchestrated and finely tuned by the organism as a whole, in a highly coordinated molecular ‘dance of life’ that’s necessary for survival.

In contrast, genetic engineering in the laboratory is crude, imprecise and invasive. The rogue genes inserted into a genome to make a GMO could land anywhere; typically in a rearranged or defective form, scrambling and mutating the host genome, and have the tendency to move or rearrange further once inserted, basically because they do not know the dance of life. That’s ultimately why genetic modification doesn’t work and is also dangerous.

DOD Contracts Out Contractor Oversight

Bush's War on Civil Liberties: Legislating tyranny

CounterPunch
by Paul Craig Roberts and Lawrence M. Stratton

06/03/08

The George W. Bush administration responded to the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon with an assault on U.S. civil liberty that Bush justified in the name of the ‘war on terror.’ The government assured us that the draconian measures apply only to ‘terrorists.’ The word terrorist, however, was not defined. The government claimed the discretionary power to decide who is a terrorist without having to present evidence or charges in a court of law. Frankly, the Bush administration’s policy evades any notion of procedural due process of law...

Oil prices: George Soros warns that speculators could trigger stock market crash

He believes that the doubling in the price over the last year is partly due to investment institutions, such as pension funds, who are pumping money into indexes that track the cost of crude.

Latest IAEA Report on Iran's Nuclear Program and US Media

Remember the run up to the Iraq war back in 2002? Well, the so called "liberal" US media sources, such as the New York Times (NYT) [1] and the Washington Post (WP) [2], are at it again, this time regarding Iran's nuclear program.

Candidate McCain: A Risky Choice

By Prof. Rodrigue Tremblay

The American political process, especially at the presidential level, is inhuman and inefficient. It is a gruesome meat grinder where candidates have to campaign for months in primaries or caucuses in all 50 states, raise tens of millions dollars and see their private lives exposed and criticized. With such a system, it is no wonder that few Americans with high intellect and character are willing to submit themselves to such an ordeal.

The Great Immigration Panic

The New York Times's editorial board writes: "Someday, the country will recognize the true cost of its war on illegal immigration. We don’t mean dollars, though those are being squandered by the billions. The true cost is to the national identity: the sense of who we are and what we value. It will hit us once the enforcement fever breaks, when we look at what has been done and no longer recognize the country that did it."

Scientists Were Censored by NASA

Juliet Eilperin, of The Washington Post, reports: "An investigation by the NASA inspector general found that political appointees in the space agency's public affairs office worked to control and distort public accounts of its researchers' findings about climate change for at least two years, the inspector general's office said yesterday."

Nearby Firing Ranges Complicate Soldiers' Recovery From Stress

Ann Scott Tyson, The Washington Post, reports: "Army Sgt. Jonathan Strickland sits in his room at noon with the blinds drawn, seeking the sleep that has eluded him since he was knocked out by the blast of a Baghdad car bomb. Like many of the wounded soldiers living in the newly built 'warrior transition' barracks here, the soft-spoken 25-year-old suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. But even as Strickland and his comrades struggle with nightmares, anxiety and flashbacks from their wartime experiences, the sounds of gunfire have followed them here, just outside their windows."
