Three Peas in A Pod

by Chuck Baldwin

Take the war in Iraq. The only candidate among the top three who even hints at bringing our troops home is Obama. And if anyone believes that he is serious about it, I have a bridge I would like to sell you. Neither of the two major parties has any interest in bringing our troops home. No matter which party wins the White House, our troops will continue to be used for U.N. missions all over the world. We will continue to stick our nose wherever it does not belong. We will continue our utopian plans of nation-building, empire-building and international meddling.......

Probe of Blackwater Killing Moves Forward

Gene Johnson, of The Associated Press: "A Justice Department team has traveled to Iraq to investigate the fatal shooting of an Iraqi guard by a security contractor, hastening the resolution of questions about whether US attorneys can prosecute him, an official said Thursday. The contractor, Andrew Moonen of Seattle, was fired by Blackwater USA but never prosecuted and eventually given an overseas job by another contractor. The shooting outraged Iraqis, who questioned how an American could go free under such circumstances."

War Funding "Victory," Bizarro-Style

Maya Schenwar, of Truthout: "At first glance, it seems like a shocking triumph for the antiwar movement: After five years of war, the House of Representatives finally voted down a war funding bill on Thursday afternoon, while simultaneously passing a provision to set a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq. The catch? The 'triumph' was engineered by House Republicans, most of whom voted 'present' on the funding bill, which would have provided $168.4 billion for operations for Iraq and Afghanistan. If the Republicans had voted for the funding, as they usually do, the 85 Democrats who voted 'yea' would've easily tipped the boat in the war funds' favor."

Mast is in the past thanks to protest

by Barry Gibson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner

May 16 2008

CAMPAIGNERS have defeated plans for a mobile phone mast.

Councillors yesterday refused permission for the 18-metre structure off Station Road in Marsden.

Mobile phone operator Vodafone wanted to erect a 15.2 metre timber pole on land next to Marsden Railway Station’s overspill car park. Six antennae would have taken the total height to 18.4 metres.

More than 100 residents wrote to Kirklees Council to object to the proposal. Complaints included loss of visual amenity, possible health risks and the impact on tourism in the village.

„…BILD: Was heißt das konkret?

Radioactive hypocrisy

AlterNet
by Tad Daley

05/15/08

‘Why can’t we have them when they can?’ That, for the ‘nuclear have-nots,’ has long been the essence of what some call the nuclear double standard, what others call nuclear narcissism, what others still call America’s nuclear hypocrisy. The bitterness about that double standard has steadily intensified for almost exactly four decades now (the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT, was signed on July 1, 1968, and came into force in 1970). Why? Because in the basic bargain of the NPT, the non-nuclear weapon states promised forever to forego nuclear weapons, in exchange for a pair of promises from the nuclear weapon states. First, the nuclear weapon states conceded — quite explicitly, in Article IV — that the non-nuclear weapon states possess an ‘inalienable right’ to develop ‘nuclear energy for peaceful purposes’ and even promised ‘to facilitate’ their efforts to do so. Second, the nuclear weapon states promised — quite explicitly, in Article VI, and reiterated quite explicitly at the NPT Review Conferences in 1995 and 2000 — to negotiate the complete elimination of their own nuclear arsenals, and eventually to deliver to the human race a nuclear-weapon-free world...

The face of torture

TruthDig
by Marie Cocco

For weeks after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, when images of twisted metal and smoldering debris still filled television screens and the wail of bagpipes at firefighters’ funerals sounded day after day, there was one face that seemed to embody the terror. It was that of Mohamed Atta, ringleader of the suicide hijackers, with his steely eyes and tight lips that appeared to reflect the evil within. Seven years later, if we were to seek a portrait that is emblematic of the way the United States has tried — and failed — to bring those responsible for the heinous plot to justice, we would have to produce a photograph of Mohammed al-Qahtani. If such a photo were made public, it would probably show a battered man with signs of diminished mental capacity, a man who authorities concede was so badly abused — those outside the Bush administration call his treatment torture — that he will not be tried by a military commission with other alleged plotters of the 9/11 attacks. The Pentagon has formally dropped charges in the case against Qahtani, conceding that most of the evidence it has came from Qahtani’s own coerced statements, made after abusive interrogations...

US plot to nail Iran backfires

Asia Times
by Gareth Porter

05/15/08

The George W Bush administration and General David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, plotted a sequence of events that would sensationally build domestic US political support for a possible strike against Iran. Key to this was to be the display of a major cache of Iranian weapons for use by Shi’ite militias in the Iraqi city of Karbala. The weapons turned out to have nothing to do with Iran, and worse, the Iraq government suddenly distanced itself from the US’s plan...

Manufacturing a food crisis

The Nation
by Walden Bello

06/02/08

When tens of thousands of people staged demonstrations in Mexico last year to protest a 60 percent increase in the price of tortillas, many analysts pointed to biofuel as the culprit. Because of US government subsidies, American farmers were devoting more and more acreage to corn for ethanol than for food, which sparked a steep rise in corn prices. The diversion of corn from tortillas to biofuel was certainly one cause of skyrocketing prices, though speculation on biofuel demand by transnational middlemen may have played a bigger role. However, an intriguing question escaped many observers: how on earth did Mexicans, who live in the land where corn was domesticated, become dependent on US imports in the first place?

McCain: Troops (some, at least) out of Iraq by 2013

Los Angeles Times

05/15/08

Republican John McCain, in a speech forecasting what the country would look like after his first term in office, said today that he expects the war in Iraq to be won and most troops to be home by January 2013. The prediction marks a major departure for McCain, who railed against rival Mitt Romney shortly before the Florida primary for his remark in April 2007 that he thought President Bush and Iraqi leaders should privately discuss a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq. At the time, McCain suggested that the comment would embolden America’s foes in Iraq. The Arizona senator leveled the same criticism at Democratic Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, stating that their advocacy for withdrawing troops from Iraq amounted to setting a date for ’surrender’...

President Bush Committed Political Treason

Will Bunch writes for The Philadelphia Daily News: "President Bush went on foreign soil today, and committed what I consider an act of political treason: Comparing the candidate of the US opposition party to appeasers of Nazi Germany - in the very nation that was carved out from the horrific calamity of the Holocaust. Bush's bizarre and beyond-appropriate detour into American presidential politics took place in the middle of what should have been an occasion for joy: a speech to Israeli's Knesset to honor that nation's 60th birthday."

The Bushes and Hitler's Appeasement

Robert Parry, of Consortium News: "To this day - as President Bush showed by mocking the long-forgotten Sen. Borah and then wielding the Nazi 'appeasement' club against Barack Obama and other Democrats - the assumption remains that the bubble will continue to protect the Bush family name. However, the evidence from dusty archives suggests that the Bush family went way beyond appeasement of Adolf Hitler to aiding and abetting the Nazis."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/051908M.shtml

George Bush, at Sea in the Desert

Michael Winship writes: "President Bush's recent speech before the Knesset, ostensibly to celebrate Israel's 60th birthday, was not only a display of political cynicism at its worst - using a diplomatic occasion to perpetrate an unseemly attack on Barack Obama - but a microcosm for the disregard with which the president holds the rest of the world. And vice versa."

Bush’s bizarro world

Cato Institute
by Ted Galen Carpenter

05/19/08

President Bush’s speech to the Israeli Knesset, in which he charged that people who advocate negotiating with ‘terrorists and radicals’ are the equivalent of craven Western leaders who sought to appease Adolf Hitler in the late 1930s, has created a political firestorm. Critics immediately accused Bush of smearing Barack Obama, who had previously indicated that he was willing to open a dialogue with such countries as Iran and Syria. More broadly, liberals asserted that Bush was smearing anyone who supported talking to repressive regimes as weak-kneed appeasers. Those criticisms are justified. Bush’s comments were a cheap shot, and as much as the White House and Republican leaders assert that they were not directed at Obama, it is doubtful if even Laura Bush believes that denial. The invocation of the shopworn ‘appeasement’ slur, however, is not the most-troubling aspect of Bush’s argument. There are three other, even-more-serious problems with his reasoning...

To keep the timeless concepts of Americanism alive in our Constitutional Republic

(excerpt)

Overview of America

by John McManus

John McManus narrates a moving tribute to America and discusses the history of what makes America great and how only we, as informed citizens, can keep the timeless concepts of Americanism alive in our Constitutional Republic.

Part 4 completes the capitalism discussion started in Part 3 and explains differences between the monopolistic state-controlled economy and the competitive free enterprise system and how each aligns with a specific political system. Mr. McManus closes with questions of what type of America will we leave for future generations and whether or not we will return America to its Constitutional roots.

We need to preserve this mass movement for the defense of liberty; which Ron Paul has created, without regard to what happens in the election. Ron Paul has created a mass movement for the defense of liberty Ron Paul has done what I, and many other people, have tried to do for forty years. This movement must NOT evaporate away after the election: without regard to how the campaign, or the election, goes. The election is just ONE BATTLE in the war for liberty. Even if Ron Paul WON the election this war for liberty will not be finished.

Thomas Jefferson said: "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

I add to this: "The battle for freedom is never won, and is never lost. The battle for freedom always continues. It is never too late, and it is never soon enough, to defend freedom. No matter how enslaved we are, we always have hope. No matter how free we are we are never safe."

We could WIN the election, and still lose the battle for freedom, if we fail to maintain this mass movement for the defense of liberty. Ron Paul cannot do everything by himself. The masses, organized for the defense of liberty, will be needed to influence Congress to support President Paul.

We could lose the election, and still WIN the battle for freedom, if we maintain this mass movement for the defense of liberty. Our liberty is in our own hands. President Paul would inspire us... BUT it is still up to us!

The freedom message walks on water. Ron Paul is a human being, who puts his pants on one leg at a time. Ideas; not individuals, are the life force of lasting revolutions.

We must formalize the organization of the mass movement for the defense of liberty. We must DO THIS NOW, while the enthusiasm still survives.

If you are in this group, we know that you are not one of those 80% of the people, who never know what happened. At the very LEAST you are watching things happen.

We want to live the rest of our lives in peace and freedom. To do that, we need to TAKE ACTION. We also need a lot MORE PEOPLE, who will TAKE ACTION.

Mai in Bonn.

The Squeeze on the Middle East's Moderates

David Ignatius, of The Washington Post: "Watching the news from Lebanon, it's poignant to read the title of a new memoir by Jordan's former foreign minister, Marwan Muasher, 'The Arab Center: The Promise of Moderation.'

Hillary: She won’t go easy!

Bulletin to all nations: help! Tornadoes, typhoons and earthquakes batter the globe, while the U.S. is teetering into recession and paralyzed by a stupid war it can neither win nor quit. But somehow we are locked at the hip to Hillary Clinton, who won’t stop her manic tarantella until her party whirls into ruins, like the run-amuck carousel in Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Strangers on a Train.’ … It’s what Hillary’s campaigning has come to: a monotonous exercise in showboating solipsism, like Shirley MacLaine as the geriatric mother in ‘Postcards from the Edge,’ hijacking her daughter’s party and kicking up her heels to sing ‘I’m Still Here!’

Torture: A bully’s creed

The way bullies think

Tibor's Space
by Tibor R. Machan

05/13/08

It is nearly impossible these days to escape the bullies who are set to run everyone’s life. I thought I would visit friends on the Central California Coast to get away from it all for a day but no such luck. No sooner did I settle in with my friends to drink a glass or two of some very fine wine from their and some other cellars, I encountered yet another horror story about the demise of private property rights in the United States of America. This time it isn’t the eminent domain bullies who have been popping up everywhere, insisting on misconstruing the Fifth Amendment to the U. S. Constitution as authorizing transfer of private property by government edict to preferred private concerns. (That is what the outrageous Supreme Court Ruling in 2005, Kelo v. City of New London Connecticut sanctioned.) This time the excuse is a legal fiction called ‘Smart Growth,’” whereby powerful politicians everywhere are forcibly imposing their vision of how people should live and use their own land.

I give up, says Brazilian minister who fought to save the rainforest

Independent [UK]

05/15/08

“Brazil has been accused of turning its back on its duty to protect the Amazon after the resignation of its award-winning Environment Minister fuelled fresh fears over the fate of the forest. The departure of Marina Silva, who admitted she was losing the battle to get green voices heard amidst the rush for economic development, has been greeted with dismay by conservationists.”She was the environment’s guardian angel,” said Frank Guggenheim, executive director for Greenpeace in Brazil. “Now Brazil’s environment is orphaned.”

In a letter to President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, Ms Silva said that her efforts to protect the rainforest acknowledged as the “lungs of the planet” were being thwarted by powerful business lobbies. “Your Excellency was a witness to the growing resistance found by our team in important sectors of the government and society,” she wrote...

Court bars Bush administration’s logging plans for Sierra

San Francisco Chronicle

05/14/08

A federal appeals court blocked the Bush administration’s plans today for logging three tracts in the northern Sierra and said the government has failed to justify a critical element in its plan for the forests — selling trees to lumber companies to pay for removing brush that increases the threat of fire. Preventing fires is important, ‘but are there no alternative ways of getting money to do the clearing?’asked the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. The court said the U.S. Forest Service has not explored the obvious alternatives: finding the money elsewhere in its budget or asking Congress for more...

Home Mortgage Hijinks

by Jon Christian Ryter

The home mortgage default and foreclosure figures are in for February. The Bush Administration was not anxious to release them. The figures don't look good. The home mortgage crisis has become contagious. It's spreading from the subprime home market into the prime loan market. Approximately 2.3% of the holders of prime rate mortgages were at least 60 days late. That number is up 1.4% from a year ago. It is the highest level of delinquencies from prime rate borrowers in a decade. Prime rate mortgages are given only to the "A" list of credit worthiness........
