Buddy, Can You Spare a Billion?

Dana Milbank, reporting for The Washington Post, writes: "Meet Alan Schwartz, welfare recipient. As the chief executive of Bear Stearns, he's getting rather more public assistance than your typical welfare mom - specifically, $30 billion in federal loan guarantees to help J.P. Morgan Chase take over his firm."

Economy Loses 83,000 Jobs

Dean Baker, writing for Truthout, analyzes the latest economic reports: "The establishment survey showed the economy losing 80,000 jobs in March, the third consecutive month of job loss. The private sector lost 98,000 jobs, the fourth consecutive decline in private sector employment. Overall, the private sector has lost 296,000 jobs over the last three months, a decline of 97,000 per month. Not surprisingly, the weakness in the labor market is also affecting wage growth."

Residents' phone mast fear

ANGRY Upminster folk fear that a new phone antenna planned for their street could make their children sick from radiation poisoning.

The 12.5metre O2 mast, planned for Corbets Tey Road, in Upminster, has been met with staunch opposition from local residents and shopkeepers who claim the antenna is a lethal eyesore.

Now they've decided to fight back, launching a No To O2 campaign and petition.

81 Percent in US Poll Say Nation Is on the Wrong Track

David Leonhardt and Marjorie Connelly report for The International Herald Tribune, "Americans are more dissatisfied with the country's direction than at any time since the New York Times/CBS News poll began asking about the subject in the early 1990s, according to the latest poll. In the poll, 81 percent of respondents said they believed 'things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track,' up from 69 percent a year ago and 35 percent in early 2002."

Risky misreading of Democrat turmoil

Hawaii Reporter
by Christopher G. Adamo

04/03/08

Rush Limbaugh is enjoying the ensuing success of his ‘Operation Chaos,’ his ongoing effort to weaken the political prospects of the Democrats by prolonging party infighting between the Hillary and Obama camps. But despite Limbaugh’s exuberance, the Democrat Party is alive and well, and could under the right circumstances, resuscitate itself very quickly. Sadly, many of the conditions necessary for such a scenario result from the collaboration of inexcusably gullible Republican ‘moderates.’ Willfully ignorant of past experience, they are again buying into the inane notion that partial concession to fundamentally flawed liberal principle is a worthwhile tactic by which to improve the political climate...

States sue EPA over global warming

Officials of 18 states are taking the EPA back to court to try to force it to comply with a Supreme Court ruling that rebuked the Bush administration for inaction on global warming. In a petition filed Wednesday, the plaintiffs said the 5-4 ruling in April 2007 required the Environmental Protection Agency to decide whether to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, from motor vehicles...

2008 PigBook released: Republicans top porkers

Citizens Against Government Waste

04/02/08

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) today released the 2008 Congressional Pig Book, the latest installment in an 18-year exposé of pork-barrel spending….. In fiscal year 2008, Congress stuffed 11,610 projects (the second highest total ever) worth $17.2 billion into the 12 appropriations bills. That is a 337 percent increase over the 2,658 projects in fiscal year 2007, and a 30 percent increase over the $13.2 billion total in fiscal year 2007. …. For the first time, the names of members of Congress were added to the projects. The top three porkers were members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, beginning with Ranking Member Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) with $892 million; Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) with $469 million; and Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) with $465 million...

The “only” source of “freedom”

Liberty For All
by Ed Lewis

04/02/08

We the living souls called ‘human beings’ - man, woman, and child - must come to understand what the freedom of man is, and the source of said freedom. We will at the same time come to understand also the source of tyranny that has engulfed us all. Nearly every living one of us has been indoctrinated to other than the truth of the relation between man and ‘the government’ he establishes...

The Militarization of America

CounterPunch
by Col. Dan Smith

04/02/08

Meeting the need for compact, powerful pistols and other small arms is a vast industry, one that, in the United States, started in the three decades prior to the U.S. Civil War.So it was no great surprise, seven years after the U.S. defeated the Taliban in Afghanistan and five years after Saddam Hussein’s army dissolved in Iraq, to find in the Fiscal Year 2008 National Defense Authorization Act (Public Law 110-181) some congressional action to procure small arms to help rebuild the armies of these countries...

Republicans, Democrats and the militarization of society

Intellectual Conservative
by Jack Kerwick

06/13/08

There is something strangely vaudevillian about contemporary American politics. ‘The Right’ — the Republican/neo-conservative Party — labors incessantly to sustain the popular impression that it alone exists to advance such ‘conservative first principles’ as ‘limited government,’ ‘individual liberty,’ and a ’strong national defense.’ Those on ‘the Right’ are committed to ‘lower taxes,’ ‘deregulation,’ and, in general, ‘free enterprise.’ They are also committed to waging and winning ‘the War on Terror,’ however long that may take. ‘The Left’ — the Democratic/welfare-state liberal Party — misses no opportunity to reinforce the deceptive self-image that it has worked so long and hard at crafting. It would have Americans believe that it alone is the party of ‘civil rights,’ and ‘racial, gender, and economic equality.’ Those on ‘the Left’ complain about the militaristic and imperialistic aspirations of their right-wing opponents, and about how much more constructively the resources that have been deployed to fund America’s military adventures abroad could have been spent right here at home. Neither the Republican neo-conservative nor Democrat welfare-state liberal parties seem to be aware of how each is but an expression of one and the same style of politics...

All power to the President

Consortium News
by Robert Parry

04/02/08

The release of a five-year-old Justice Department memo underscores how far the advocates for George W. Bush’s unfettered power were ready to go. But the enduring threat is that four U.S. Supreme Court justices — one shy of a majority — favor that imperial presidency. …. Though little discussed on the campaign trail, a crucial issue to be decided in November is whether the United States will return to its traditions as a constitutional Republic respecting “unalienable” human rights or whether it will finish a transformation into a frightened nation governed by an all-powerful President who can do whatever he wants during the open-ended “war on terror...

Some preachers encourage dangerous culture of victimhood

Tennessean
by Tim Alexander

04/02/08

As a pastor, I am saddened by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s wrong words. … Pulpits are filled with preachers who believe that they are speaking truth to the entrenched powers of the world. What they are actually doing is pandering. It is unseemly, not to mention unbiblical, for shepherds to encourage a culture of victimhood among their sheep. A victim is a dangerous person, for a victim rarely calibrates retaliation against reason. Jesus did not encourage victimhood. Jesus said persecution on account of his name was inevitable. He challenged his followers to repay evil with kindness, to turn the other cheek, to go the second mile and, above all, to demonstrate living faith in earnest discipleship. Christians were not to expect the world to genuflect in their direction. Respect from the world was to come with the purposeful life and the thoughtful answer...

Betting the Farm

According to Sam Hurst in Gourmet Magazine, "Late last autumn, Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, was furious. After a year of hearings, staff work, and backroom bargaining, he had finally pushed a bipartisan farm bill out of committee. But before a single word had been spoken in debate on the Senate floor, President Bush had labeled the $286 billion proposal a budget buster and threatened a veto."

Dance of the Oil Fairies

Truthout's Kelpie Wilson writes: "On April Fools' Day, the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming invited executives from the five biggest US oil companies to answer questions about high gas prices, oil company profits and the future of oil. Even the most hard-hitting questioners, however, failed to pin the execs down on the real issue, which is how to convince an oil industry that is running up against absolute supply limits to switch gears and invest resources in what Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Washington) called the 'clean energy revolution.'"

Renewable Energy Hedges

In Policy Innovations, Roy Morrison writes: "The pursuit of sustainability in the 21st century will equate economic growth with ecological improvement, not ecological destruction. The ecosphere is humanity's home, not a temporary hotel that we trash with impunity before moving on. Sustainability means equilibrating human conduct with the health and dynamics of the ecosphere, to maintain conditions favorable for life. Humanity's existence and future depend upon it."

Thirty-Six U.S. States to Face Water Shortages in the Next Five Years

At least 36 states are expected to face water shortages within the next five years, according to U.S. government estimates. Available freshwater supplies are dwindling across the country due to rising temperatures and droughts, while increasing sprawl, population and inefficient resource usage are leading to rising demand.

Iran torpedoes US plans for Iraqi oil

In the highly competitive world of international politics, nation states very rarely miss an opportunity to crow about success stories. The opportunity comes rare, mostly by default, and seldom enduring. By any standards of showmanship, therefore, Tehran has set a new benchmark of reticence.

Strangelove's Wet Dream: A Nuclear Free Fire Zone

By Peter Chamberlin

Never before have so few invested so much, for such long a time, to confuse so many people, about so many things. Never before have so many free people willingly betrayed their own country, their own religion, even their own family, in order to gamble for the opportunity to serve the interests of the powerful few, who are known to reward loyalty so extravagantly.
