Fresh from their defeat in forcing national identity papers on us with REAL ID, the Feds are trying once more. Their plea this time isn’t terrorism but immigration — though they’re pretty much the same, or so the State has convinced some Americans. Introduced in 2005 to combat the waves of terrorists thronging our shores, REAL ID was supposed to thwart the bad guys by transforming our driver’s licenses into a national ID card...

It’s appropriate that on this week of the fifth anniversary of the criminal US invasion of Iraq, we are also seeing several other things: the death toll of American troops in that doomed adventure is rising past 4000, the economy is sliding into a recession which could be deep and long, and the financial markets are teetering on the edge of a possibly historic collapse. The conjunction of all of these dire things is no coincidence...

Resisting the empire

Foreign Policy in Focus
by Joseph Gerson

03/20/08

Victories are within sight for people in a growing number of nations where communities that host U.S. foreign military bases have long fought to get rid of them. Ecuador’s decision not to renew the U.S. lease for the forward operating base at Manta (see Yankees Head Home) is the culmination of just one of many long-term and recently initiated community-based and national struggles to remove these military installations that are often sources of crime and demeaning human rights violations. A growing alliance among anti-bases movements in countries around the world, including the United States, is preventing the creation of new foreign military bases, restricting the expansion of others, and in some cases may win the withdrawal of the military bases, installations and troops that are essential to U.S. wars of intervention and its preparations for first-strike nuclear attacks...

President sees start to victory in Iraq

President Bush sought yesterday to convince a skeptical public that the United States is on the cusp of winning the war in Iraq, arguing in a speech that the recent buildup of U.S. forces has stabilized Iraq and ‘opened the door to a major strategic victory in the war on terror.’ Vice President Cheney said separately that it did not matter whether the public supported a continued U.S. presence in Iraq, and likened Bush’s leadership to that of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. After a reporter cited polls showing that two-thirds of Americans opposed the Iraq war, Cheney responded: ‘So?’

Guildwood Cell Tower Update

Dear Guildwood No Tower Members and Interested Parties,

I regret to inform you that the Presbyterian Church contacted us late last night to inform us that the Church will not break its lease with Bell Mobility.

On a more positive note, Councillor Ainslie has re-confirmed today that Bell has yet to file their own impasse with Industry Canada to pursue the site. Bell Mobility will need to file an impasse with Industry Canada should they want this site, only then will Industry Canada make a final decision.

This morning the Councillor informed us that he met with new Bell Mobility representatives yesterday and that these new Bell representatives want to work proactively with us on this issue. Bell Mobility’s meeting with the Councillor is a very positive first step to working with us!.

The Councillor mentioned that Bell Mobility is still looking at other sites, especially the Livingston Building where they can co-share their antennas with the existing Rogers antenna. Obviously this option would be most suitable to the vast majority of our group and community, it would be ~500 metres from the schools and daycares, not create unnecessary RF radiation and it will be unobtrusive, and restore our harmony.

Once again, we are disappointed with the Church’s decisions but are cautiously optimistic with the progress that Councillor Ainslie has made working on our behalf. The Councillor’s news is encouraging but we are not out of the woods yet.

Please update your friends and neighbours without access to email.

I will keep everyone apprised as soon as I hear anything else about the cell tower.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions,

Warmest regards,
Karina

One thing we do not owe Iraq is another "public relations coup" but that's what appears to be up ahead as the war de-accelerates. An Election Without Meaning

By Peter Phillips

Will November 2008 bring a meaningful change to America? Will getting rid of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney without impeachment or indictment really make a difference? Will a 600 billion dollar war/defense budget be cut in half and used for desperately needed domestic spending? Will the ninety-three billion dollars profits in the private health insurance companies—those parasitic intermediates between you and your doctor—be used instead for full health care coverage for all? Will Habeas Corpus and Posse Comitatus be restored to the people? Will torture stop? Will all students in public universities be able to enroll for free? Will the US national security agencies stop mass spying on our personal communications? Will the neo-conservative agenda of total military domination of the world be reversed?

The answer to these questions in the context of the current billion dollar presidential campaign is an absolute no. Instead we have a campaign of personalities and platitudes. There is a race candidate, a gender candidate and a tortured veteran candidate, each talking about change in America, national security, freedom, and the American way. The candidates are running with support of political parties so deeply embedded with the military industrial complex, the health insurance companies, Wall Street, and corporate media that it is undeterminable where the board rooms separate from the state rooms.

The 2008 presidential race is a media entertainment spectacle with props, gossip, accusations, and public relations. It is impression management from a candidates’ perspective. How can we fool the most people into believing that we stand for something? It is billions of dollars of gravy for the media folks and continued profit maximunization for the war machine, Wall Street, and insurance companies no matter who is determined the winner in November.

We must face the fact that the US government’s primary mission is to protect the wealthy and insure capital expansion worldwide. The US military—spending more than the rest of the militaries of the world combined—is the muscle behind this protect-capital-at-all-costs agenda, and will be used against the American people if deemed necessary to support the mission.

Homeland Security, the North American Command, mass arrest practices with the FALCON raids, new detentions centers, and broadened “terrorism” laws to included interference with business profits are all now in place to insure domestic tranquility through extra judicial means if needed.

The two party corporate political system is having a HOMELAND presidential campaign—Hillary, Obama, McCain, Election, Lacking, Actual, National, Debate. It is time for real change, but it will only come with a social movement of reform in the tradition of the progressive, labor, civil rights, anti-war movements of the last century. We need to use all of our activist, legal, and political resources to reverse these threats to freedom. Naomi Wolf says it is not too late to prevent totalitarianism, but we have to act fast.

We Need a President, Not Just a Commander in Chief

Joe Brewer and George Lakoff write for Truthout: "In this primary season, the question of what makes a good presidential candidate has taken many forms. Is it how to negotiate with leaders of other nations? What kind of experience qualifies one to be a leader? Blackwater's World of Warcraft

Bruce Falconer and Daniel Schulman, reporting for Mother Jones, write, "When Blackwater founder Erik Prince took his seat before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform last October, in the midst of a firestorm over the killing of 17 civilians in Baghdad by his contractors the previous month, the 38-year-old was at the helm of a fast-growing global business-and had the confidence to match."

Bernanke Deep-Sixes the Dollar to Save Wall Street

Contre Info writes: "In the absence of the authority and political courage required to cut to the quick, the Fed has been reduced to using expedients that - while allowing the extent of losses to remain concealed - postpone the moment of truth and compromise the dollar. To save Wall Street, Bernanke exports the crisis and stokes a global inflationary fever, risking a devastating boomerang: rejection of the dollar as the global reserve currency."

Iraq Surge Has Failed in Its Main Purpose

For McClatchy Newspapers, Joseph L. Galloway writes, "Here we are in the final throes of the Bush administration and someone has foolishly let Darth Cheney off his leash again." And, Hannah Allam and Laith Hammoudi report: "Amid tears and wails, mourners in the southern city of Najaf on Tuesday began burying victims from a suicide bombing that killed nearly 50 worshipers and injured dozens of others just before evening prayers Monday in nearby Karbala ... But Vice President Dick Cheney gave an upbeat view of conditions in Iraq as he concluded his unannounced trip to mark the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion."

Mission Still Not Accomplished

In an editorial, The New York Times writes, "It has been five years since the United States invaded Iraq and the world watched in horror as what seemed like a swift victory by modern soldiers and 21st-century weapons became a nightmare of spiraling violence, sectarian warfare, insurgency, roadside bombings and ghastly executions."

White House admits fault on “Mission Accomplished” banner

Missoula Missoulian

04/30/08

The White House said Wednesday that President Bush has paid a price for the ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner that was flown in triumph five years ago but later became a symbol of U.S. misjudgments and mistakes in the long and costly war in Iraq. Thursday is the fifth anniversary of Bush’s dramatic landing in a Navy jet on an aircraft carrier homebound from the war. The USS Abraham Lincoln had launched thousands of airstrikes on Iraq...

Club mast sparks fury at Colgrain

Published: Thursday, 20th March, 2008 12:00

By Steve McElroy

A FATHER is threatening to take legal action over alleged health risks from phone masts if a new telecom pole is erected at Colgrain.

Furious residents claim they had not been informed that a communication mast was being moved from the site of the new Hermitage Academy to nearby Colgrain Bowling Club — which already houses an existing antenna.

T-Mobile, who own the mast, claim they notified all residents last June, without objections. Consequently, Argyll and Bute Council officer —, under delegated powers — approved the application in October.

Five years on: media’s role in Iraq

Christian Science Monitor
by staff

03/19/08

This fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq offers a chance to look at how the US media has portrayed the war. Mostly they have done well, but they’ve also played an unwitting role in the subtle battle to influence public opinion. Despite their best efforts to be credibly neutral and act as the eyes and ears on a distant war, journalists must also contend with efforts by both the Pentagon and insurgents in Iraq to practice what experts call ‘information operations,’ or IO — attempts to sway media reports. … The US government, too, can influence how reporters frame the war’s story line. The press already stands accused of not doing enough before the war to probe the Bush administration’s arguments for the invasion, whether it was Saddam Hussein’s alleged weapons or the prospects of implanting democracy in Iraq. Hollywood has even made movies, such as Redacted, to make up for what it sees as lack of coverage...

Anti-Iraq war U.S. diplomats poorer but proud

Yahoo! News

03/18/08

In 2003, three senior U.S. diplomats abruptly ended prestigious careers and gained international attention by noisily resigning in protest over the U.S. war in Iraq. In interviews on Tuesday on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the invasion, the three said they have lived more modestly without government salaries but the chaos that has followed President George W. Bush’s Iraq policy shows their actions were justified. …. The three former diplomats did not know each other before, but have written a joint opinion article they hope to publish on Wednesday’s anniversary. ”The war happened, with tragic but predictable consequences,” they wrote. “The invasion of Iraq had a terrible impact on America’s relationship with the world.” "Our gesture earned us a brief moment in the media and the cautious respect of our colleagues. Five years later, we do not regret our decision to leave the profession we loved...

Toxin Agency Looks the Other Way

In this two-part package, Suemedha Sood of The Washington Independent says, "Two high-profile reports about major public health concerns have put the the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a division of the Centers for Disease Control, at the center of public attention. It was revealed last month that the agency took two years to investigate claims that the government had housed Hurricane Katrina survivors in toxic trailers. In addition, the Center for Public Integrity exposed in February that the agency had suppressed a report on environmental hazards in the eight Great Lakes states."

Corn Can't Save Us

According to David Pimentel in The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "Dwindling foreign oil, rising prices at the gas pump and hype from politically well-connected US agribusiness have combined to create a frenzied rush to convert food grains into ethanol fuel.
