BISHOP'S STORTFORD: Anger over latest bid for phone mast

By Isabel Jensen

FRUSTRATED residents of Oriole Way, in Bishop's Stortford, are furious that mobile phone giant O2 has been allowed to apply for a fourth time in its bid to install a mast.

As reported by the Citizen last September, O2 had tried to get a 13m highmast with two equipment cabinets at the corner of Oriole Way and Great Hadham Way, but the application was rejected after angry residents opposed the move.

The company has since applied again, once last December and again in January, and the company recently applied for planning permission again, much to the dismay of residents who sent in 106 letters of objection to the last planning application.

The $2 Trillion Nightmare

Bob Herbert, writing for The New York Times, says: "We've been hearing a lot about 'Saturday Night Live' and the fun it has been having with the presidential race. But hardly a whisper has been heard about a Congressional hearing in Washington last week on a topic that could have been drawn, in all its tragic monstrosity, from the theater of the absurd."

John McCain has engaged a leading GOP lobbyist to coordinate his message and travel schedule with congressional Republicans - the most concrete sign yet that the biggest battleground in the 2008 presidential race may not be Pennsylvania or Ohio or Florida's I-4 corridor but rather the floor of the United States Senate."

HALE STEWART

The Huffington Post — As the financial system continues to experience a high amount of turmoil, it is clear that deregulation has exceeded the "too much of a burden on business" argument. Instead, too little regulation has broken the economy.

Woman jailed for overdue library books

WISC News

03/02/08

In Beloit, failing to return overdue library books is apparently a serious offense. It landed Keely Givhan behind bars for six days. Beloit Public Library director Dan Zack said when books aren’t returned, the library sends three overdue notices. After the third notice, a citation is sent that could include court date. Givhan said she was in the process of moving so she never got the notices. When a police officer pulled her over for a traffic violation in November, the officer found out about her outstanding warrant and took her to jail. She and her family couldn’t afford to pay her fine so she remained in jail for six days...

Joseph Joubert said: "Imagination is the eye of the soul". It therefore comes as no surprise that with terrorists lending their imagination to Lord Corbett of Castle Vale, a member of the House of Lords from Gordon Brown's ruling Labor Party, his soul is blinded. Lord Corbett would have us believe that millions of Iranians are eagerly waiting for the "freedoms offered by Iran's parliament-in-exile, the National Council of Resistance of Iran."[i] Perhaps it is the inaccuracy of the number that troubles this writer.

Why Isn't Iraq in the 2008 Election?

By Noam Chomsky

The highly regarded British polling agency, Oxford Research Bureau, has just updated its estimate of deaths. Their new estimate a couple of days ago is 1.3 million. That's excluding two of the most violent provinces, Karbala and Anbar. On the side, it's kind of intriguing to observe the ferocity of the debate over the actual number of deaths. There's an assumption on the part of the hawks that if we only killed a couple hundred thousand people, it would be OK, so we shouldn't accept the higher estimates. You can go along with that if you like.

Altersarmut steigt rapide an.

Does Labor Need More Clout?

Robert B. Reich, writing for The San Francisco Chronicle, says: "We're finally reaping the whirlwind of widening inequality. A recession looms because most consumers are at the end of their ropes and can't buy more. Median hourly wages, adjusted for inflation, are no higher than what they were three decades ago. Since then, most of what's been earned in America has gone to the richest 5 percent. But the rich won't buy much more because they already have most of what they want - after all, that's what it means to be rich."

Subject: Kittens being killed

I started up this petition and please send it along to your friends and whoever. Please take a moment to add your name to the list.

http://www.petitiononline.com/kittens9/petition.html

A cruel fate is bestowed upon Kittens in South Africa, which makes me ashamed to call myself an South African.

What some people do to make money is, they take kittens, they hold the kittens in the air by either their necks or legs, and they sell the kittens for a lot of money. If the people (walking by or seeing this) does not buy the kitten then this person kills the kitten in front of them (mostly by breaking their little necks)

The SPCA has been phoned on many occasions and they simply stated that they can not do anything about this matter (to the persons responsible). The public have been warned NOT to buy these kittens because if we do then we will start up a new market and inspire more people to do this kind of sickness because they see its working (to make money, out of people who can’t stand to see these kittens be killed).

I am starting up this petition so that the SPCA will have more power to do something about this (by taking up the government and demand actions to be done.) Will this help? I do not know, but it is worth a try.

Help us, help those Kittens from such a cruel fate.

Change not possible with same players

by Devvy Kidd

Back in 1994, the American people yelled, "We want change!" Out went forty years of big spending Democrats and in came the Republicans with their slick marketing mantra: The Contact with America. After eleven years of bigger spending Republicans and these unconstitutional, immoral invasions of non threatening foreign countries, the American people once again said they wanted change. In 2006, with the exception of a few faces, the voters put the same old crowd and agenda right back in power because they bought a different version of the same lies. Now the American people are being bombarded with Obama's empty slogan: "Change you can believe in." I guess it depends on how you define change.........

Bush’s little secrets

Nolan Chart
by Kipper Mathews

03/02/08

Never before in the history of this country has a President had so many ’secrets’ that later slipped out as they have with G.W. Bush. From the very beginning of his presidency he has tried to sneak stuff past the watchful eyes of the American public. While there is most likely many more that he has gotten away with and no telling what they might be, once in a while somebody catches him at one of his little secrets...

The Bush administration’s war on science

Over the past eight years, the lives of millions of people in the United States and beyond have been endangered by the US government. No, I’m not talking about the war in Iraq. I’m talking about the quiet, systematic war the government has been waging against science...

02/29/08

There’s a reason material support has become such a popular charge, a reason it’s central to many of the government’s most questionable cases: The laws are a prosecutor’s dream. They don’t require evidence of a plot or even of a desire to help terrorists. They give the government a shot at convictions traditional criminal laws could never provide. ‘The administration adopted the preventive paradigm, i.e. ‘We’ve got to stop people before they’ve done something wrong,” says David Cole, a Georgetown University law professor who’s the author of several books about the effect of anti-terror laws on the justice system. ‘There’s tremendous pressure to expand grounds of criminal activity, to prosecute people who might represent a threat. The material-support provisions have been the principal vehicle for pushing that envelope.’ The question is whether that approach has made us any safer...

Tough call: Will Clinton or Obama protect your children?

Slate
by John Dickerson

02/29/08

If you vote for Barack Obama, your children are going to die in their beds. This is the message of the latest Clinton television ad running in Texas. The spot starts with a moonlit shot of a blond toddler in the warm tangle of her sheets and then cuts to a close-up of an infant also in deep REM sleep. For the next 15 seconds, the images shift from one cherubic sleeping face to another. You’d think you were watching a Baby Ambien ad if the narrator weren’t giving you nightmares: ‘It’s 3 a.m., and your children are safe and asleep. But there’s a phone in the White House, and it’s ringing. Something’s happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call. Whether it’s someone who already knows the world’s leaders, knows the military — someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world’...
