We need a stronger message

FISA Action Page: It's Time For A Majority Leader Who Is More Than A Gutless Supplicant

Yesterday Harry Reid again brought forward the version of the FISA bill containing a provision for telecom immunity for their criminal complicity in illegal wiretaps of American citizens. Sure we need to win another filibuster, but we also need a stronger message. Reid must go.

What part of exercising power doesn't Harry Reid get? The Washington Post reports him "pleading" with the White House. And yet, it is his decision which version of the FISA bill to have the Senate consider, and by choosing to bring forward the bad one, he is knowingly forcing opponents of yet another "get out of jail free card" for Cheney cronies to get 60 votes to strip it out of the bill. Or filibuster yet again.

Step Down Harry Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/step_down_harry.php (anyone can use this link)

Facebook Version: http://apps.facebook.com/fb_voices/action.php?qnum=pnum784 (for this link must be a member of Facebook and logged in)

This is the last straw. Time and again he has abdicated his leadership, claiming he is "personally" opposed to things, while collaborating to stack the deck in favor of the other side of the policy issue. Reid has got to go.

And call them on the phone too. Here are the tested toll free numbers, 800 828-0498, 800 614 2803 and 866 340 9281. And there is a local phone number lookup on the regular action page above to get you all the local district phone numbers.

OK, those are the basics. Now it's time for us to breathe some fire of our own.

And please keep in mind, as with all our action pages, no words will be sent on your behalf to your members of Congress, neither from this alert nor on the action page itself, but the stated subject line, "Reid Must Step Down As Majority Leader Over His Telecome Immunity Surrender", and your additional personal comments if any.

But first, if you still have not yet gotten your "Impeach Cheney?" cap, this is your LAST chance to pick up one of these historic collector's items. On Monday, Dennis Kucinich intends to introduce proposed articles of impeachment against Bush as well, so this will be the last batch of caps about Cheney alone. Get the cap where it all started while you can.

Impeach Cheney? Caps: http://www.usalone.com/impeach_cheney_cap.php

Alright then, put on your flameproof protective gear, here we go.

The word feeble does not even begin to describe how ineffective Reid has been as majority so-called leader in representing the interests of the people. A leader does not repeatedly tell his caucus they are on their own, while working behind the scenes to cripple any real opposition. And in so doing, he has done nothing but grease the neocon agenda for as far back as the eye to see. For them he has been as very effective, as a co-conspirator.

He gave his private blessing to the Gang of 14 that stuck us with two additional lockdown reactionary votes on the Supreme Court for the next generation. And it goes downhill from there. More recently his unilateral caving in has stuck us with an evil White House con job dubbed "The Surge", the sole purpose of which was to drag out the death and destruction in Iraq at least another 2 years.

On the few occasions there have been successful filibusters under his rudderless non-leadership he has actually publicly apologized for it, like when we practically prostrated himself on the rejection of the John Bolton nomination, promising to cave yet again if they would just provide a couple extra redacted documents pretty please. We're surprised that Dick Cheney doesn't make him wear a flowered dress with little pink bows on the Senate floor.

Is he the Senate majority leader or is he a mouse? Reid makes Neville Chamberlain look like Richard the Lion Hearted. He is long overdue to be put out to pasture, hopefully one without gophers that might accidentally frighten him.

So again, none of these words of ours will go to your member of Congress, unless you choose to paste some of them in as part of your own personal comments on the action page.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Was heißt hier ohne Gentechnik?

Reformen des Gentechnik-Gesetzes sorgen für Diskussionen
http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/27/27146/1.html

Campact-News 02/08 Freitag, den 25. Januar 2008

Lesen Sie unsere Analyse: http://www.campact.de/gentec/abschlusstext

Stimulus Gone Bad

Paul Krugman writes for The New York Times: "House Democrats and the White House have reached an agreement on an economic stimulus plan. Unfortunately, the plan - which essentially consists of nothing but tax cuts and gives most of those tax cuts to people in fairly good financial shape - looks like a lemon." In related news, David Cay Johnston, of The New York Times, reports: "President Bush’s plan to send payments to 117 million households to stimulate the economy would impose major strains on the Internal Revenue Service ... Nobody has authorized the agency to hire extra workers to reprogram computers, enter new data, issue checks and answer calls. The agency will divert resources from serving taxpayers and enforcing tax laws."

Like FBI, CIA Has Used Secret "Letters"

Joby Warrick, of The Washington Post, reports: "For three years, the Bush administration has drawn fire from civil liberties groups over its use of national security letters, a kind of administrative subpoena that compels private businesses such as telecommunications companies to turn over information to the government. After the 2001 USA Patriot Act loosened the guidelines, the FBI issued tens of thousands of such requests, something critics say amounts to warrantless spying on Americans who have not been charged with crimes. Now, newly released documents shed light on the use of the letters by the CIA."

The GOP’s security gap

The American Prospect
by Harold Meyerson

The conventional wisdom on this year’s election is that John McCain would be the strongest candidate the Republicans could send against the Democrats come November. I believe it myself. And yet, as the economy continues to deflate, the prospects for a McCain presidency are deflating as well. The affable McCain has on more than one occasion affably admitted that the economy is not his strong suit. It’s an admission you can make when you’re confident that your bona fides on national security will eclipse your economic deficiencies. And that confidence is evident in McCain’s view of the world, and of himself. The ‘transcendent challenge’ of our time, he says in his stump speech, is ‘radical Islamic terrorism.’ Given that, who better to fight it than McCain?...

Activists Expose Greenwashing by Rainforest Alliance

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Disguised as Rainforest Creatures, Activists Expose Greenwashing by Rainforest Alliance

Demand End of Certification of Rainforest Destruction

Date/Time: Thursday, January 24, 7pm at RA Headquarters, 665 Broadway (near E. 3rd St.)

Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet - info@EcologicalInternet.org; telephone: 1.920 776 1075

(New York, New York) – Thursday the New York Climate Action Group (NYCAG) joins other environmental organizations denouncing Rainforest Alliance for profiting financially from the destruction of rainforests.

NYCAG is demanding a permanent end to the industrial logging of old-growth forests worldwide. Dressed as creatures from the rainforests of the world, environmentalists from New York City will participate in a festive rally to greet and inform the participants at a Rainforest Alliance cocktail party.

Scientific studies have shown that industrial logging in old- growth rainforests is never sustainable and leads to their permanent destruction by ranchers, mining operations, and industrial agricultural interests. Rainforest Alliance receives 30% of its funding by certifying industrial logging through their “Smartwood” program. They are the largest such certifier in the world. “Smartwood” certification follows Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) guidelines, which Rainforest Alliance claims will ensure sustainable forestry. In truth, however, FSC guidelines allow first-time logging of pristine ancient forests. These forests are recognized by climate scientists worldwide as our greatest defense against climate change.

Many cocktail party attendees coming expecting pina coladas will first be met by activists disguised as rain forest creatures, including an array of wild birds and mammals and even a gorilla to represent those imperiled because of certified logging schemes similar to Smartwood in the Congo.

The watchdog group, FSC-Watch, is directed by one of the founders of FSC Simon Counsell, who became its greatest critic. They have reported that, in addition to legal unsustainable logging, SmartWood has issued FSC certificates to various companies involved in illegal logging; its parent organization, Rainforest Alliance, also issued 'ethical certificates' to a company which that was actually working with Colombian terrorists.

In recent weeks, opponents of FSC certification of old-growth forest logging have achieved important victories. On January 17th the city council of Ocean City (New Jersey) voted unanimously to cancel a $1.1 million purchase of ipê timber from ancient rainforests, despite claims that its FSC certification ensured sustainability. Dr. Glen Barry, of Ecological Internet, responded, "The message is getting through: for our survival rainforest logging must end. Remaining rainforests must be protected and allowed to expand, with compensation to local peoples."

But is the message getting through?

Explains NYCAG member Emily Sandusky, dressed as a gorilla, “I hope Rainforest Alliance will recognize that FSC certification of old-growth tropical timber is certifying the destruction of the rainforest.”

The activists urged Rainforest Alliance to recognize the need to support permanent protected status for the world's remaining old growth forests. The animals will ask cocktail party-goers to use their influence to get Rainforest Alliance to change its ways and to stop selling old growth rainforest timber products. Rainforest Alliance will also be urged to support NYCAG efforts to end New York City's use of tropical hardwoods.

The Man Behind The Curtain

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

The American people seem mesmerized by the smoke and mirrors of the political and media elite. For the most part, the people of this country seem totally unaware that while the global elite who run this country passionately promote the "war on terrorism," those same elite are also violently attacking the liberties of the heartland. While they create a gargantuan Department of Homeland Security for our "protection," they are using that very same department to eviscerate the constitutional protections of our republic........

The State Of The Union: Meaner, Not Leaner

By William A. Cohn

From the holy land to the promised land, presidential promises of peace (in the middle east), progress (in Iraq) and prosperity (via more tax cuts) will be met with deep skepticism when Mr. Bush delivers the annual state of the union address on Monday.

Reuters — Many of the poorest people in the United States are still struggling to recover from the effects of a recession that ended six years ago, making them very vulnerable as the country stands on the brink of a new downturn. In 2006, the latest year for which Census Bureau figures are available, 12.3 percent of Americans were living in poverty, compared with 11.7 percent in 2001, the year of the last recession.

How to bureaucratize the corporate world

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Ben O'Neill

01/23/08

While already deeply entrenched in government decision-making, consultation and submission to the interests of various ’stakeholders’ is also becoming more and more common in the business world under the influence of the doctrine of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Weary of the relentless pursuit of profit and the daunting task of satisfying both shareholders and customers, corporate managers are falling all over themselves to emulate the methods of their bureaucratic cousins...

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition

I just don’t get it. We have people screaming and demanding personal responsibility with less government intrusion in our lives - excellent ideas. Yet these same people have no problem supporting a nanny government, stripping people of their individual freedoms and the chance to be responsible for their own actions. Why? Because they don’t like the personal and private choices about how one should live their life, even if they are harming no one else. HELLO??? Wouldn’t we all be better off if we held people accountable for their own actions, and not the choices and fear of others?...

The foolishness of economic “stimulus”

Christian Science Monitor
by Donald J. Boudreaux

01/24/08

A consensus is building that America’s economy is sliding — perhaps plummeting — into recession. In December the unemployment rate jumped to 5.0 percent, up 3/10ths of 1 percent from its November level. And of course investors are now growlingly bearish. To no one’s surprise, politicians are rushing in with various plans for helping the economy. Most of these plans involve ’stimulus.’ The calls are loud to put more money into the hands of ordinary Americans in hopes that they will spend — not save — it, thereby boosting the overall economy. Such stimulus, however, is futile. Government cannot create genuine spending power; the most it can do is to transfer it from Smith to Jones. If the Treasury sends a stimulus check to Jones, the money comes from taxes, from borrowing, or is newly created...

Bush’s stimulus flop

Cato Institute
by Alan Reynolds

01/22/08

A reporter on Fox News recently asked, ‘Which presidential candidate is most qualified to turn the economy around and avoid a recession?’ The quick answer is: none. No candidate will become president soon enough to matter, and to ask the question is to presume that recessions can and should be avoided. But some business mistakes require time to be fixed. Too many houses were built in some areas, so prices have to fall to discourage more building and encourage more buying. Some banks made too many bad loans, so they need to become more cautious. Besides, if presidents really knew how to avoid recessions, why do we keep having them? Nonetheless, President George W. Bush is now joining the election-year rush to ‘give the economy a shot in the arm.’ A shot of debt, that is...

Erwerbslosenverbände kritisieren Untätigkeit der Koalition zur Kinderarmut

„Wirksame Hilfen statt Sprechblasen dringend erforderlich“.

http://www.soga-nms.net/media/Positionspapier$20Kinderregelsatz.pdf

The farce of sovereignty

Keeping US troops in Iraq on a long-term basis was a key part of the neo-cons' agenda. They were well aware of the link between military power and political control. As long as the US had troops on the ground that the Iraqi government felt it needed, the US would be able to use them as leverage for defining the main lines of Iraqi government policy.

Gandhi And The Struggle Against Imperialism

The three (and a half) occupations have to be lifted, invaders have to go home and dismantle their imperial structures. Both sides must be liberated from the disastrous tie of imperialism. Fighting the gandhian way both sides can blossom because these energies are used positively.

Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections in 2008 bill, HR5036

Urge your U.S. Representative now to vote "YES" for the Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Bill, HR5036. http://www.house.gov

HR5036 is scheduled as a suspension bill that cannot be amended. Its sponsor Representative Rush Holt explains that because of its category as a suspension bill, it cannot be amended but it must pass by a supermajority, two thirds of the vote.

We know that the need is for every voter to have a paper ballot and have every vote verified".

Far too many polling places lack voter-verified paper ballots for every vote cast and routine audits. Unless that changes, there surely will be elections with questions that cannot and will not be resolved.

Last year, Rep Holt introduced legislation to establish voter-verified paper ballots for every vote cast and routine random audits in all federal elections. As it becomes clear that Congress will not act on this soon enough, he has introduced an emergency stopgap measure to provide incentive to counties who want to do the right thing in time for the 2008 general election in November.

The bipartisan Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008 reimburses state and local jurisdictions that elect to convert to paper ballot voting systems, provide emergency paper ballots, and/or conduct audits by hand counts. Jurisdictions that takes advantage of this reimbursement will help prevent disputes and uncertainties about the November election.

Time is of the essence to pass this bill, in order to ensure that counties can take advantage of the opt-in reimbursements.

Please call or fax your Congressperson and Senators right away and ask them to support HR 5036. http://www.house.gov

Electronic-ballot voting machines, even those which produce a printed ballot, do not provide true verifiability because the voter has no way to check that the machine correctly cast or counted the ballot. Accurate voting methods to ensure that elections are fair and impartial require paper ballots and independent manual audits.

The full text of the "Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of
2008" (HR5032) is posted here:

http://electionarchive.org/ucvInfo/US/audits/HOLT_EMER2008FINAL_xml.pdf

A one page flier of H.R. 5036's provisions is posted here:
http://electionarchive.org/ucvInfo/US/legislation/SummaryFlyer5036.pdf

HR5036 applies only to the November 2008 election and:

1. Reimburses jurisdictions who want to get rid of paperless DRE systems to switch to optical scanners, paper ballots, and ballot marking devices.

2. Reimburses any jurisdictions using any DRE (electronic ballot touch-screen machines - even ones with paper roll ballot records) to pre-print paper ballots in case of machine malfunction on election day only if these ballots will be counted as a regular ballot.

3. Reimburses any jurisdictions for conducting manual audits of machine-counted vote counts for audits conducted independently in at least 3% of vote counts that are publicly reported prior to conducting random selections for the audit. The bill makes other vote count audit requirements that are crucially important to valid audits but not currently met by most state vote count audit procedures.

4. Reimburses jurisdictions which determine the outcomes of election by hand counting all paper ballots.

Any county, township, or state jurisdiction may apply for reimbursement by:

1. applying in advance of the 2008 November election and providing assurances that the jurisdiction will meet the bill's requirements for emergency paper ballots or for obtaining precinct-based equipment that marks or tabulates or scans paper ballots.

2. certifying after the election that the audits were conducted as per the requirements of the bill for publicly verifiable manual audits of machine vote counts.

3. documenting reasonable costs paid or incurred by any jurisdiction. Reimbursement will be provided directly to the jurisdiction and applications do not have to go through the state. Payments will be made to the jurisdictions for reasonable costs within 30 days of receiving all required certifications and documentation of costs.

Any jurisdiction may apply to the National Institute of Standards and Technology at least 30 days in advance of the election for approval of alternative ballot sampling methods and so may use a more scientifically effective and efficient approach to auditing than a flat-rate 3% audit.

More than adequate funding is provided by H.R. 5036.

The time frame is still doable if Congress acts quickly.

How quickly can states replace paperless touch-screens with optical-scan paper ballot voting systems? http://electionmathematics.org/em-voting-systems/VotingSystemChange.pdf

Paper ballot voting systems are more reliable and auditable and save jurisdictions and taxpayers money: See http://electionmathematics.org and click on "Voting Systems"

WHAT CAN VOTERS DO:

Now is your best chance to to help make the 2008 Presidential election verifiable. Please ask your members of Congress to co-sponsor the "Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008", Representative Rush Holt's bill to provide emergency funding for paper ballots voting systems and random hand counted audits of the November elections.

The Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act offers states or counties reimbursement for purchasing paper ballot systems in time for the November elections, and reimbursement for conducting random hand-counted audits of the November election results.

The bill would offer money only for the most reliable voting systems: those that use voter-marked paper ballots, with accessible ballot-marking devices to serve voters with disabilities. By offering crucial funding, Congress can empower state and county officials to do the right thing in time for November.

Rep. Holt's bill could not be more timely. As the Presidential primary season unfolds, 14 states will use paperless electronic system in their primaries, either as the statewide system, or as the system used in many counties.

Contact your US Representative http://www.house.gov

After the HR5036 bill passes the US Congress, please contact your local county, township, and/or state election jurisdictions' officials.

Verified Voting's research shows that there is plenty of time to replace paperless unauditable voting systems prior to November. "How Long Does it Take to Change a Voting System?" http://electionmathematics.org/em-voting-systems/VotingSystemChange.pdf

Holt says that contacting the state or county to get verified voting systems in place" is the way to go. HR5036 will be taken advantage of by the many jurisdictions whose officials have been responsibly trying to scrap expensive vulnerable flawed DRE voting equipment but lacked funding.

FYI, Holt's emergency election bill would immediately help states to scrap unreliable, dangerous paperless DREs such as NJ, MD, and FL, and, if they chose to participate, will help states like GA, DE, PA and several other states currently using unauditable paperless voting machines - to replace them and to provide faster, more reliable, trustworthy, more economical service to voters.

Who Will Take On the Banks?

Published on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 by TruthDig.com

by Robert Scheer

It was smart of the top Democrats to cut presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich out of that South Carolina debate, where they lamely attempted to deal with the dire consequences of the banking meltdown without confronting the banks. They made all the proper concerned noises about millions of folks losing their retirement savings and homes, but none was willing to say what Kucinich would have said: Bankers are crooks who will steal from the public unless the government holds them accountable.
