Protection for Endangered Whistle-Blowers

In an editorial, The New York Times writes: "Congress is finally ready to stand up to the Bush administration and for those courageous federal workers who dare to reveal waste and abuse in government. The Senate has passed strong reforms to the 1989 whistle-blower protection law, counteracting the gag orders, retaliatory investigations and other harassments that have become shamefully standard practice during the last seven years."

Study says paper trail needed in ballot box

Tennessean

12/24/07

A vocal group of voters who want more tangible voting records gained more ammunition with a report out this month that urges backing up electronic ballots with a paper trail. But the $25 million endeavor isn’t likely to take place before the 2008 presidential election as some have hoped, said state Coordinator of Elections Brook Thompson. Thompson wants to wait until federal guidelines for voting machines come down before making the big-ticket buy. ‘We need the time and money to do that,’ Thompson said. ‘To completely change out our systems may cause more problems than the potential problems you’re trying to solve’...

Ron Paul: What Does Freedom Really Mean?

Few Americans understand that all government action is inherently coercive. If nothing else, government action requires taxes. If taxes were freely paid, they wouldn't be called taxes, they'd be called donations. If we intend to use the word freedom in an honest way, we should have the simple integrity to give it real meaning: Freedom is living without government coercion. So when a politician talks about freedom for this group or that, ask yourself whether he is advocating more government action or less.

Mountain of discarded mobiles grows at 'frightening' rate

By Nic Fildes

Published: 24 December 2007

Snazzy new mobile phones like the iPhone and other must-have electronic gadgets, such as the latest laptops and iPod models, will fill many stockings this Christmas. But disposing of the older devices will not be at the forefront of most people's minds.

Around 11,000 tons of unused phones already sit dormant in drawers across the UK, and that figure is likely to rise this Christmas as people upgrade to better devices. Factoring in old laptops, games consoles and portable music players, the environmental implications of celebrating Christmas with a new digital toy start to look ominous, as most of the older electronic products will end up in landfill sites, leaking dangerous chemicals into the earth.

The Power Elite Playbook: Population Reduction Through Genocide

by Deanna Spingola

Part 6

U.S. foreign policy consistently thwarted any independence movements in Southeast Asia by claiming that it endangered our "national security." Meanwhile they backed governments and armies that engaged in profitable drug trafficking. In addition to U.S. interference in Viet Nam as early as 1945, top brass at the Pentagon suggested that soldiers and bombers be sent to western Laos in 1959. Secret military plans stated that the U.S. government was prepared to use nuclear weapons for these military operations. Perhaps this is the reason the U.S. refused to sign the Declaration on the Prohibition of the Use of Thermo-Nuclear Weapons in 1961......

Many people at the center of the scandal have fled Washington, and new laws and rules have been put in place making it harder to use prosecutors' offices to win elections. By believing military action is the answer, America has lost its way

Tennessean
by Rev. David Harkness

12/25/07

In an insightful article in the Dec. 16 Tennessean … authors Richard Armitage and Joseph Nye spoke a universal truth that has echoed down through the corridors of history with a power that challenges us as Americans to take a serious look at the dangerous course we have been following for the past six years. This truth has not only been spoken by numerous heroes of the higher human self, but also demonstrated in their lives, some literally losing their lives to defend the efficacy of the truth. … How we, as a nation, have deviated so far from this truth by practicing the principle that military power will provide the solution for all our insecurities, and by the demonstration of most of our presidential candidates that saving our lives is the utmost issue of importance. And all because the elevation of this issue to the highest pinnacle of our value system has been sold to the American people in the past six years...

When are we going to stop SWAT?

No Force, No Fraud
by Bob Smith

12/22/07

SWAT teams and raids, originally limited to situations when police expected to face serious armed conflict, have become commonly used to serve search warrants, usually where drug activities are suspected. Most police departments are now equipped and staffed with SWAT capabilities. Such raids often employ officers in full battle gear, often with black hoods, and they strike with little or no warning or identification. They employ flash grenades, which sometimes ignite fires or seriously stun people inside the building. They smash doors and rush in with huge bluster and noise, brandishing semi-automatic weapons, manhandling anyone they find, and often tear up the house seeking evidence. Some 47 innocent people have been killed during such raids, and another 22 non-violent offenders have been killed. 15 police officers have been killed … at least one by shots from other police...

Paul takes unconventional approach to win delegates

Fox News

12/25/07

San Francisco Republicans reaching out to voters in overwhelmingly Democratic Bay Area districts may sound like a losing strategy for GOP presidential candidates. But supporters of White House hopeful Ron Paul say they know better. They’re taking advantage of a rule change in February’s California GOP primary under which the previous ‘winner-take-all’ system has been replaced by one that awards three primary delegates for every congressional district a candidate wins — no matter how many or how few Republicans live there. … Democratic strongholds in Berkeley, Santa Cruz and Oakland may be fertile ground for second-tier Republican candidates who can’t compete with rivals’ money and organization in traditionally conservative enclaves like San Diego or Orange County. In San Francisco, for example, volunteers need to reach only a couple thousand Republicans to win the district and pick up three delegate votes...
