Recent reports from Sweden and France, published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, reveal that adults who have used cellphones for 10 years or more have twice as much brain cancer on the side of their heads most frequently exposed to the phone. The Swiss and Chinese governments have set official exposure limits for cellphone microwave emissions that are 500 times lower than those the United States mandates. In Bangalore, India, it is illegal to sell a cellphone to a child younger than 16. As a basic precaution, people should use the phones with earpieces or speakers, and young children should not use them at all -- consistent with warnings recently issued by the German and British governments. Because brain cancer can take 10 years or longer to develop, national statistics cannot be expected to show the health impact of today's skyrocketing cellphone use. But we shouldn't wait for the cases to roll in before acting.

This is another area where Congress has sold out the American people for BIG campaign donations from the pharmaceutical companies who do good on one hand, but on the other, they have allowed greed to kill Americans.

In Paraguay wachsen mittlerweile auf 2,6 Millionen Hektar Soja-Monokulturen – das meiste davon bepflanzt mit gentechnisch modifizierter Soja. Angebaut wird es vornehmlich für den Export als Tierfutter oder Biokraftstoffe. Die Nachfrage nach Biokraftstoffen treibt die Preise für Soja nach oben, und Soja-Unternehmen wandeln deshalb gerade weitere 400.000 Hektar Land in Plantagen um. Die Folge sind eine massive Entwaldung, die dieses Jahr in den schlimmsten Waldbränden seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen gipfelten und die Erderwärmung antreiben. Zudem werden deshalb zehntausende Menschen von ihrem Land vertrieben: 90.000 Familien allein während des letzten Jahrzehnts. Pestizid-Einsätze lösen Krankheiten und sogar Todesfälle in der Landbevölkerung aus, Auslaugung des Bodens und Wasserverschmutzung bedroht die Zukunft der Menschen.

This has not yet made the local press, but on Nov 2nd O2's appeal against refusal by Wealden District Council to grant permission for a mast in the village of Nutley was dismissed.

O2 has tried for several years to put a mast up in the village or on the outskirts and has previously lost two appeals.

In the latest application , O2 wanted to put a fake scots pine in the village amongst a stand of large deciduous trees.

Local Parish Council Maresfield came out strongly against the application, citing technical errors in O2's submission and apparent lack of rigour in examining options for other sites.

Despite this, Wealden District Council officers recommended approval and when this came to planning committee at Wealden, members voted unanimously against.

It was clear using 3D topography software (ArcGIS from ESRI), and terrain information from the Ordnance Survey that the siting of the mast was not optimal and there was a site outside and to the north east of the village which could have used a fake tree solution.

The Inspector upheld the original decision on the grounds of inappropriate siting/appearance in an AONB and O2's lack of review of alternative sites.

In Wealden District Council's further submission to the appeal, officers suggested that a site close to the appeal site using a smaller mast, combined with one or two streetworks poles in the village, could be a suitable solution.
