Abu Ghraib Swept Under the Carpet

The New York Times writes, "We would have been hard pressed to think of a more sadly suitable coda to the Bush administration's mishandling of the Abu Ghraib nightmare than Tuesday's verdict in the court-martial of the only officer to be tried for the abuse, sexual assault and torture of prisoners that occurred there in 2003."

Phone mast illness fears

Aug 30 2007

by Emma Cruces, Formby Times

A WOMAN who has spent hundreds screening her home from radiation, claims a phone mast is making her ill.

Jo Greenwood-Bostock, 54, came forward as Sefton’s councillors produced a report claiming many residents living near masts are experiencing identical symptoms.

Jo was initially unconcerned when she watched workmen erecting the mast 500 metres from her home in 2004.

The Ince Blundell grandmother, who has lived near Orrell Hill Wood for 30 years, only started worrying when symptoms of tinnitus, severe headaches and insomnia began.

Fears voiced over phone mast plan

A 20-METRE phone mast could dominate the skyline of one of Winchester's most densely populated areas, residents fear.

People living in Fairfield and Cranworth Roads in Fulflood say the Vodafone tower plan in Andover Road could ruin the visual beauty of the city, as well as affect their health.

James Read, who lives in Fairfield Road, said of the proposal for Hunts Frozen Foods, near to the railway station: "The huge mast is unsuited to the centre of Winchester, supposedly the number one city in which to live in the UK.

"It would be in a visually-devastating central Winchester site, with unknown health risks."

Petition aims to stop mast

30 August 2007

EDITORIAL - heraldnews@archant.co.uk

AN ATTEMPT to erect another mobile phone mast in Bishop's Stortford has been met with fierce opposition.

The planning application by telecoms company O2 has sparked a petition by nearby residents who are confused over the proposed height of the new tower.

Eve and Terry Pearson of Marguerite Way, Bishop's Stortford, campaigned against the 12.5m mast planned near their home by the roundabout on Great Hadham Road, after receiving a letter from East Herts Council back in May.

A DECISION on whether to grant planning permission for a mobile phone mast close to two schools has been deferred.

At a meeting last week, North Hertfordshire District Council's planning control committee delayed deciding whether mobile phone company O2 should be allowed to erect a 15.6m high telecommunications mast with a floodlight attachment on land at Sports Centre, Whitethorn Lane in Letchworth GC.

Why not treat ineffective presidents like CEOs?

Christian Science Monitor
by Andy Zelleke

08/29/07

In the age of terror, Americans are painfully aware of the vulnerabilities that come from living in a free and open society. But what about the vulnerabilities arising out of our fixed, four-year presidential terms? Poor judgment and incompetence by a chief executive can bring a major corporation to its knees in short order. That’s why boards reserve the right to fire CEOs at a moment’s notice. So why do America’s CEOs enjoy a free ride for four years, when so much more is at stake? This is a question worth debating openly...

Defending the Constitution after Gonzales

American Prospect
by Adele M. Stan

08/29/07

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was deeply involved in both of the scandals that may yet yield contempt of Congress citation for members of the executive branch. But will Congress step up to defend the Constitution and issue those citations? …. What is truly surprising about Gonzales’s resignation is its implication that congressional scrutiny of his role in some of the executive branch’s most unsavory actions could somehow have consequences for the administration as a whole — as if Congress actually had its act together in the oversight department. I want so badly to embrace this idea, but I dare not, for fear of yet another fallen hope...

Scientists reignite mobile phone cancer fears

New doubts raised over mobile phone safety

By Nic Fleming, Science Correspondent

Last Updated: 7:19pm BST 29/08/2007

Just five minutes of exposure to mobile phone emissions can trigger changes that occur during cancer development, according to new research.

Scientists found mobile signals can activate cell division – central to the growth of tumours - even at very low power levels.

Government guidance that mobile phone use is safe is based on the mainstream scientific assumption that electromagnetic radiation from devices such as mobiles could only cause health hazards as a result of heating.

The new research, highlighted in this week’s New Scientist, supports the position of some researchers who argue handsets can trigger potentially harmful changes to cells irrespective of temperature changes.

Scientists reignite mobile phone cancer fears

By John Pospisil

Scientists reignite mobile phone cancer fears New research has reignited fears of links between mobile phone usage and cancer.

It's generally believed by the scientific community that electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones can only damage tissue by heating it, which is one of the reasons why mobile phones are considered safe.

However, Israeli scientists have found that electromagnetic radiation generated by mobile phone handsets can trigger cell division after five minutes of exposure, according to a report in New Scientist.

Iraq: Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics

Michael Winship writes for Truthout: "Throughout, the Bush administration has misinterpreted, cooked or hidden the numbers that tell the real story: the number of attacks, the number of suicide bombings, the numbers of civilian dead and wounded. For politicians and generals, statistics (as I have quoted an old British truism here before) are like a lamppost to a drunk - used more for support than illumination."

Wer einmal lügt, dem glaubt man nicht ...

29. August 2007

Calls Grow Louder for International Oversights of US Markets

Heather Timmons and Katrin Bennhold report for The International Herald Tribune: "Politicians, regulators and financial specialists outside the United States are seeking a role in oversight of American markets, banks and rating agencies in the wake of recent problems related to subprime mortgages. Their argument is simple: The United States is exporting financial products, but losses to investors in other countries suggest that American regulators are not properly monitoring the products or alerting investors to the risks."

Lesson from Vietnam: It’s time to cut our losses

Boston Globe
by H.D.S. Greenway

08/28/07

It ill behooves an administration led by two who assiduously avoided the Vietnam War — Vice President Dick Cheney famously said he had other priorities than fighting for his country — to lecture the nation now on the lessons of its consequences. President Bush said last week that those who succumbed to calls to end the war would be responsible for the same tragedies that the end of Indochina wars unleashed. ‘Will today’s generation of Americans resist the allure of retreat?’ he asked. ‘Or will we bug out and leave Iraq to Khmer Rouge-like horrors?’ For those of us who spent some years in Indochina, living through that drawn-out catastrophe, there are indeed parallels with today. The president’s rousing claim that ‘a free Iraq’ is within our reach is the same drivel as was the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ to a previous generation...

Both lenders & borrowers have contributed to the mortgage mess

Tennessean
by KEVIN O'CONNELL

08/28/07

Homeownership used to be a privilege that was rewarded to those who had proven their commitment to money management, debt priorities and had managed to save money while doing these. Homeownership was considered the ‘American Dream.’ Then the mentality became that anyone who could dream could own a home. As we used to say, ‘fogging a mirror’ became the primary qualification for a lot of mortgage loans. No matter how irresponsible people had been with money or creditors, they could get mortgage financing. The approval decisions were justified by the fact that the borrowers were paying a higher interest rate. Now these borrowers are living up to their reputations. This is not a reflection of all lenders and how they do business. Some of today’s delinquent loans were made to people that should have gotten them...

The love of power vs. the power of love

Christian Science Monitor
by Lawrence W. Reed

08/28/07

We look forward to the time when the power of love will replace the love of power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace. So declared British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone more than a century ago. His audience surely responded then the same way audiences would today –- with universal approval. But the world, perhaps more so now than when Gladstone spoke, seethes with hypocrisy. Though we say we prefer love over power, the way we behave in the political corner of our lives testifies all too often to the contrary. Gladstone was eminently qualified to say what he did, and he sincerely meant it. He was a devout man of faith and character, lauded widely for impeccable integrity in his more than six decades of public life. Four times prime minister, he still ranks as one of the few politicians who really did ‘grow’ in office...

Ron Paul’s Golden Rule

Free Market News Network
by Michael Cloud

08/28/07

‘How would we feel if a foreign country sent troops to the United States and made us do what they thought was best?’ asked Ron Paul. ‘How would we feel if they stationed powerful navies just off our shores and forced us to do what they told us?’ These were the questions that Ron Paul raised about U.S. Military Interventionism during the Second Republican Presidential Debate — and afterward with news reporters. Some of the news analysts thought Ron Paul was asking rhetorical questions. Or dodging the hard facts of American foreign policy. But many viewers and listeners got the simple and profound principle behind Ron Paul’s questions: The Golden Rule.” [free registration required]

Buckley shocked his fellows when he admitted ‘one can’t doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed’ and urged on the administration and his fellow conservatives ‘the acknowledgment of defeat.’ Ah, but not VDH and his fellow fantasists, including Buckley’s epigones over at National Review, who are stubbornly hewing to the neoconservative line. Immune to evidence, however vivid, that their premises and ideological theories are not only wrong but actively harmful to American interests in the Middle East and worldwide, these people — the neocon ‘dead-enders,’ to borrow one of Donald Rumsfeld’s favorite phrases — are quite simply crackpots. They are like proponents of the Flat Earth theory, or advocates of phrenology: in the face of all evidence to the contrary — mountains of it — they hold that the ‘real truth’ (about the earth’s flatness, the ’scientific’ validity of phrenology, all the ‘progress’ we’re making in Iraq) is being ’suppressed’...

Departures won’t change Bush agenda

Christian Science Monitor

08/29/07

By the time both Alberto Gonzales and Karl Rove announced their resignations from the Bush administration this month, both seemed to have the term ‘lightning rod’ permanently affixed to their names. Both of them, close friends and aides to President Bush going back to his Texas days, had become media poster boys for the controversial tactics and goals of the Bush presidency: Mr. Gonzales, as White House counsel and then attorney general, was a facilitator for Mr. Bush’s bold efforts to expand the reach of the executive branch and then embroiled himself in a political scandal over fired US attorneys that left senators of both parties questioning his honesty and competence. Mr. Rove, the architect of Bush’s two presidential victories and his closest adviser in the White House, inflamed his opponents’ passions over his hardball political tactics...

Concealing The Workings of the Emerging World Order

by Constance Cumbey

If you were to hide something in plain view, how would you go about it? Well, one way you might successfully do it is to give it a very bland and common name. You might even call it something very ordinary. One way might be to give it a name as common as BASIC. What can be more "basic" than BASIC? Then one would have those words stand for equally innocuous words such as, for example, "British American Security Information Council." Who would ever think to look there? Then you would establish a plain vanilla appearing website on a google.com and/or yahoo.com search. Few would be like to notice it and the participants could work openly without notice........

Crackpot Realists and Permanent War

By Ann Berg

While economic pundits point fingers at loose lending for the malodor in the housing market that is now filling the noses of financiers, they miss the primary cause: permanent war. Permanent war has caused the nation's institutions - political, social, and economic - to be organized into an impervious structure without which war could not be tolerated or financed.

Next-up News n°293

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/next_up_news_n293.htm

Now That Gonzales is Gone, Who Do We IMPEACH First?

THE TIME TO CROW IS AFTER WE IMPEACH

Yesterday Alberto Gonzales announced that we was resigning to spend more time with his own criminal defense attorneys . . . er . . . that is, his family.

And you had to know our own inbox was absolutely stuffed with "You Did It" emails, combined with solicitations for donations. Most notable was one from the Democratic party fund raising committee with the theme "Not Good Enough". Boy, howdy to that. Only 28 members of the House were supporting the impeachment of Gonzales, still only a similar number have gotten behind Dennis Kucinich's call for the impeachment of Dick Cheney. Not Good Enough!

WHO SHOULD BE IMPEACHED FIRST? ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/impeach_first.php

We presume you like our alerts because we always strive to give you the straight, clear eyed scoop. So yes we DID do something. We did have an impact with all our messages to Congress and letters to the editor of our daily local newspapers. The resignation of Gonzales is a sign of progress, but it is NOT a victory until we get someone better and there is real accountability. And anyone who thinks that the Bush administration will, without a dog fight, allow anyone in there who might possibly hold them accountable probably already owns a couple refrigerators in Alaska. We have even heard speculation they might recess appoint, after expressly making a deal with Harry Reid that they would not.

What we must now do is seize the initiative immediately and crank up the pressure for impeachment. 100,000 of you have already voted in the National Cheney Impeachment Poll (99.17% Yes to impeach), but we also get many emails asking "What about Bush?", and "Shouldn't we impeach Bush at the same time?" We note that a higher proportion of the American people are ready to impeach Cheney right now (54%). But what we are doing with the action page below is asking YOU to vote on the strategic question of who should be impeached first, which at the SAME time will send your vote on this question to your members of Congress, and your personal message to your local newspaper as well if you like.

WHO SHOULD BE IMPEACHED FIRST? ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/impeach_first.php

CALL PROGRESSIVE RADIO SHOWS AND PUBLICIZE THE "WHO TO IMPEACH FIRST" CELL PHONE TEXT-TO OPTIONS

In addition we have created new options for the cell phone voting functions we have already implemented thanks to your kind donations. You can text "CHENEY" to 30644 to impeach him first, or text "BUSH" to 30644 to impeach him first, or text "BOTH" to 30644 if you think it would be strategically wise to go for the double play.

In just a couple months since we jumped behind Dennis Kucinich's H.Res. 333, we have seen a HUGE shift in the number of progressive radio personalities verbally supporting impeachment, but still they are not giving people enough direct calls to action with specific things their listeners can do the make it happen. For the most part we don't hear them giving out toll free Congressional phone numbers, or web site action page URLS or anything else even now. The cell phone "text to" options above are IDEAL for use on the radio to mobilize people to speak out. So we are asking those of you who like to call into these radio shows to try to get on the air and encourage our radio stars and their listeners to text to the 30644 number and cast their "CHENEY", or "BUSH" or "BOTH" votes.

The chance of Bush voluntarily proposing a new attorney general who is NOT another made Bushie is exactly zero. The best case scenario is a bruising confirmation fight with the danger that the Democrats will cave yet again, remembering that Gonzales should NEVER have been confirmed in the first place, and hearing Senator Schumer publicly "implore" Bush to not bend them over all the way this time is not the kind of noise we need to hear from him. The likelihood is that the Justice Department will limp along without real independent leadership for months while they continue to try to run the clock out until the next election.

In short, this is not the time to do an end zone dance. The real game does not even kick off until we commence impeachment. Everything so far has just been a bunch of pre game ceremony, to set the table for impeachment. We set the table for impeachment by speaking out in greater and greater numbers. That is what we ARE doing. Then if impeachment is not on the table with all its trimmings, we expect extensive primary challenges to the incumbents who were "Not Good Enough".

IMPORTANT IMPEACHMENT DEMONSTRATION IN WASHINGTON SEPT 15

A number of our participants, including our friends at Impeach For Peace have also asked us to help publicize the upcoming march on Washington. On the chance that you do not have all the info on this action, including transportation help, we reproduce their alert below:

DC Impeachment Protest: Sept 15

On September 15th, 2007 there is a march in Washington to impeach both Bush and Cheney...

If you cannot be there, contact your congress person and ask them to support impeachment!

If you need transportation, visit http://answer.pephost.org to locate a transportation centre nearest you.

September 15 March on Washington committees are being set up in communities around the country. The impeachment movement is uniting again with the anti-war movement to demand Bush's Impeachment and to end the war. Tens of thousands will descend on Washington DC at the very moment that the national and international media will be focusing on General Petraeus' report to Congress, which is being issued on September 15.

Iraq war veterans and their families will make up a huge front contingent of the September 15 March on Washington. At the very moment that Congress will be debating the war in mid-September, the people will gather in an historic action demanding that Bush and Cheney be impeached for inciting a war of aggression, authorizing torture, and conducting a massive spying program on U.S. Citizens.

Visit for more details: Sept15.org, ImpeachforPeace.org
