SHOULD THERE BE AN IMPEACHMENT INVESIGATION OF THE BUSH/CHENEY ADMINISTRATION?

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/impeachment_investigation.php

It is astounding that there is a actually a debate in this country about whether the law should be enforced or not, and not just the law, but the very Constitution itself.

If you believe there should be an immediate impreachment investigation of the Bush administration then vote "Yes".

If the president and vice president are guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors they MUST be investigated and prosecuted. Forget the fact that when the Republicans took over Congress in 1994 their primary agenda was to launch a political persecution of Bill Clinton, and they did little else for the next 6 years. This is not about vindictiveness, though that was THEIR own motivation at that time.

Forget the fact that there was an impeachment investigation of the last president and that the other side used it for the purpose of divisiveness. The Constitution does not place a limit on how soon after an impeachment investigation there can be another. Indeed, EVERY president from now on must weigh the possibility of impeachment as a real possibility to constrain the kind of gross abuses of power we have seen since the George Bush took office.

We have set this action page up on a voting basis. You decide if there should be an investigation and let our members of Congress take heed. Let there be a true national referendum on whether a investigation should proceed, to lead anywhere it may. Let there be a true end to sweep it under the rug politics so as to preserve the power of one political party over another, and over the majority of the people of the United States of America.

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/impeachment_investigation.php

We now have the power to shine a light into the darkest recesses of the wrongdoing of Bush and Cheney. History will only judge us kindly if we have the courage to exercise that power now.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours.

Want to End the War? Ask for Investigations!

By David Swanson

Public awareness of the lies that led to the war and the crimes committed during the war helps build public demand for the troops to come home. Not every committee in Congress can work fulltime on simply ending the war: a legislative process that must be pursued but which will be uphill and subject to veto or signing statement. Many committees in the House and Senate, without taking any energy away from ending the war, can finally conduct the investigations that have gone undone for 6 years, exposing evidence that could very well lead to criminal, civil, or political accountability, as well as pressure to end the war and precedent to help prevent the next war.

Ask your Representative and Senators to conduct investigations.

What did Bush and Cheney know about the lack of WMD and ties to 9-11, and when did they know it? The Senate Intelligence Committee committed to doing this investigation years ago and has not done it. Some committee in the House or Senate (probably Intelligence) needs to do it. While much evidence is already public knowledge, we have a right to more, including but not limited to:

* the complete 2002 National Intelligence Estimate;

* the records of National Security Council meetings on Jan. 30, Feb. 1, and March 16, 2001;

* the CIA's Senior Executive Memorandum of January 12, 2002 on Hussein Kamel;

* the records of Bush's late July, 2002, budget discussions on Iraq with Nicholas Calio;

* the records of the July 20, 2002, U.S.-U.K. intelligence conference at CIA headquarters;

* the October, 2002, one-page NIE summary described by Murray Waas and discussing aluminum tubes;

* the January, 2003, National Intelligence Council memo on Niger described by the Washington Post;

* the U.S. records of the January 31, 2003, Bush-Blair meeting at the White House

* the British and possible U.S. records of early 2003 conversations between Jack Straw and Colin Powell described by Philippe Sands;

* the complaint filed by a CIA agent in Doe v. Goss claiming he'd been punished for providing unwelcome intelligence;

* the records of the White House Iraq Group's work of marketing the war to the American public.

During World War II, the Truman Commission investigated war profiteering, activity that Truman characterized as treason but which pales in comparison to what has gone on in Iraq. Waxman or someone else should investigate.

We have yet to obtain information on Cheney's pre-war energy meetings. The House Energy and Commerce Committee should investigate the influence of the oil industry on U.S. policy. A Congress serious about serving the public would investigate the misuse of information and steps taken and not taken related to the threat of global warming. The Ways and Means Committee should investigate the subsidies given to the oil industry, as well as the misuse of funds to launch the Iraq War prior to Congressional approval. The Veterans Affairs Committee should investigate the treatment of Iraq War veterans, including the effects of depleted uranium.

Levin has said he plans to investigate extraordinary renditions. We need full investigations of detentions, renditions, torture, and murder. The public has a right to see what Bush told the CIA in memos on these practices.

The Armed Services Committees, or some committee, should also investigate violations of the Geneva Conventions found in the targeting by U.S. troops of civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances in Iraq, and the use of illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.

We also need serious investigations of the numerous illegal warrantless spying programs engaged in by the Bush administration. The gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina has not yet been seriously investigated. We have not seen the White House Emails from that time. And we've not yet seen a proper investigation of Bush's failure to take steps to protect against an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001.

The Bush administration has used paid propaganda and disinformation at home and abroad, selectively and misleadingly leaked classified information, and exposed the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation. Congress has a responsibility to look into all of these matters.

Conyers has said he plans to investigate election fraud, a crucial matter for our democracy. In addition, someone in some committee needs to investigate the use of "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress, or it will no longer matter whom we elect.

Find out what committees your representative and senators will serve on in the 110th Congress.

These are some of the more promising and relevant expected chairmanships:

HOUSE:

Government Reform: Henry Waxman

Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations: Dennis Kucinich

Judiciary: John Conyers

Subcommittee on the Constitution: Jerrold Nadler

Intelligence: undecided

Energy and Commerce: John Dingell

Ways and Means: Charles Rangel

Homeland Security: Bennie Thompson

Veterans Affairs: Bob Filner
International Relations Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations: William Delahunt

Armed Services Subcommittee on Terrorism, Unconventional Threats and Capabilities: Marty Meehan

SENATE:

Intelligence: John Rockefeller

Armed Services: Carl Levin

Energy: Jeff Bingaman

Foreign Relations: Joseph Biden

Judiciary: Patrick Leahy

Veterans Affairs: Daniel Akaka

You can also ask your representative and senators to create a bipartisan select committee to investigate the war.

A true superpower has to exercise humility, discretion, and care never to abuse the military might and economic power at its disposal

Common Sense Individualism

by Dorothy Seese

A true superpower has to exercise humility, discretion, and care never to abuse the military might and economic power at its disposal. It also has to be exemplary in conduct and respect for law and order, or the rule of law, or it is nothing but a tyrant by whatever name it calls itself. The United States has never been a paragon of virtue, but it most certainly had a general public respect for the Puritan work ethic and biblical standards of morality as the norm for public conduct and the upbringing of children......

Urge Senator to Bring the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act Up for Vote

While the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA) enjoys wide support among both the public and legislators, the Senate has yet to approve their version of the Act (S 1915). If approved, the AHSPA would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the domestic and international transport of live horses or horseflesh for this purpose.

The Senate is just about to reconvene after a long recess, and we need to get this bill up for a vote before the session ends. An estimated 2,000 horses are trucked to slaughterhouses and brutally killed each week this bill awaits action in the Senate, so we cannot allow our leaders to stall any longer. In light of this, one of Senator Jon Kyl's (R-AZ) constituents called his office on Tuesday, November 14th urging that he introduce the bill. She was told that, if Senator Kyl receives a lot of calls in support of the AHSPA, he will do what he can to get it to the floor.

Please call Senator Jon Kyl's Washington office immediately at (202) 224-4521. Let him know that you support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act and urge him to get S. 1915 up for a vote or attach it as a rider to another bill before the Senate adjourns.

Also send Senator Kyl a follow-up email urging his support for the AHSPA. Feel free to edit the sample letter to your liking.

Help protect Dolphins and Whales from US NAVY Low Frequency Active Sonar

There were a dozen Dolphins swimming off Baker beach on Saturday Oct 28 not 100 feet off the middle of the beach. Unlike Wed/Thu these dolphins were JUMPING out of the water! Lots of medium size dolphins, one BIG dolphin, and one small young dolphin, also enjoying the jumps in air.

Wed and Thursday Oct 25/26 each saw two pods of dolphins on Baker beach; one group at North end and one group at South end. Only dorsal fins visible, arching out of the water.

This is unusual. Dolphins are not usually here. I have been climbing, swimming, and sunning at Baker Beach since 1989. The water temperature is up, and of course fish stocks are down, thanks to global warming.

HELP US BAN STRIP MINING IN TENNESSEE

http://tinyurl.com/v4f4z

--------

Abolish strip mining in Tennessee

We have a bill coming up abolishing strip mining for coal.

*PLEASE FORWARD TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS, EMAIL ADDRESSES, LISTSERVES, MYSPACE BULLETIN BOARDS, IMC'S, RADIO SHOWS, MEDIA CONTACTS–EVERYONE YOU CAN**

http://unitedmountaindefense.org/banstripmining.htm

If you love mountains please contact the Governor of Tennessee! phil.bredesen (at) state.tn.us

WE ARE ABOUT TO KILL STRIP MINING FOR COAL IN TENNESSEE!!

The tide is turning! This is it. We can kill strip mining in Tennessee for good with your help. This is for all the marbles. In the last year the entire tone of the campaign against strip mining has shifted, the strip mine companies are on the defensive. Now its time for a knock out punch.

A bill was recently written with help from United Mountain Defense which out and out bans strip mining for coal in the State of Tennessee no "ifs", "ands" or "buts"–a flat out abolishment of the practice known as strip mining. We are not asking for less strip mining, or kinder gentler strip mining–we are demanding the permanent abolishment of this horrendous attack on Tennessee's jobs, environment and culture.

If you don't know what strip mining is doing to the Appalachians you are fortunate. It is an ongoing ecological, social and cultural disaster of literally geologic proportions. Entire mountains are being blown up, highland watershed are being buried forever and the most diverse habitat in the world is being destroyed for short term greed.
(unitedmountaindefense.org).

This bill was passed by the Tennessee Student legislature–and now is being passed to Governor Bredesens desk. After a week or so there it will be introduced and debated by the Tennessee General Assembly. If it becomes law all strip mining in the state of Tennessee will be forbidden by statute.

Needless to say, we need your help now more than ever. We need folks to call, email, write, fax, talk to, petition, fly planes with banners–in every way possible to contact Governor Bredesen and to express support for this bill.

Please be polite! Governor Bredesen has sent clear signals that he is not happy with the strip mining for coal happening in our fair state, as has our general assembly. This is about numbers of supporters for this bill, it is not an adversarial approach.

After the bill leaves Bredesens desk it will goto the general assembly–then we need step 2–begin calling and emailing the general assembly to urge their support for this bill.

Do not be afraid to hit the economics argument first, foremost and head on in this call in campaign. We have a cited point by point, state by state, county by county refutation of any argument that strip mining creates jobs. State data and data from the mining industry itself shows that where ever strip mining has reared its head mining jobs have plummeted.

In Tennessee that's especially ironic when our number one employer is tourism, mining is not even in the top 10. So don't be afraid! The economic, social and environmental data is all on our side against strip mining here in Tennessee.

And as the bill makes its way through our assembly you can bet the assemblies of other states will be watching (and hearing) about what Tennessee is doing. In the 70's it was Tennessee that dealt the final blow through legislation to the so called "broad form deed" which provided much of the momentum for strip mining then. We hope to repeat history. After Tennessee takes this step other states must take the idea more seriously. If we can get Tennessee to do the right thing for its own economic, social and environmental interest (and for its people) other states will come around.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Don't send us money! Hows that's for an argument from an environmental group? Right now we need your voices to be heard in support for this bill. Once during our campaign against a road in Tennessee we got over 45,000 comments in opposition to it–we need that again. This is purely about numbers. We need everyone–SEAC, the Sierra Club, GreenPeace, CRMW, Mountain Justice Summer, EVERYONE to make this a priority. And of course the coal industry is going to freak out at this overt offense against there destruction of our mountains.

Here is a bare bones copy of the bill.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:

SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 59-8-205 is amended by adding the following language as subsection (d):

(d) No permit shall be issued for a surface mine utilized for the purpose of coal mining in the state of Tennessee.

SECTION 2. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 69-3-107 is amended by adding the following language as an appropriately designated subsection:

() The Commissioner shall not have the authority to issue a permit to an activity prohibited in Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 59-8-205(d).

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon becoming law, the public welfare requiring it.

Here is more context.

Here's what the news below means. College student government members from across Tennessee passed legislation banning strip mining that will go to the desk of governor Bredesen and possibly to the Tennessee state legislature to be made into law. Thanks to Chris Irwin and Gena Lewis for drafting the anti-strip mining bills for us. There will be massive lobbying for this later so keep your eyes open and tell everyone you can to support this. We are potentially on the verge of banning strip mining in Tennessee. Woo-hoo!

Members of Tennessee Alumni & Students for Sustainable Campuses (TASSC) were busy in Nashville this past weekend at the 2006 Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature (TISL). At this annual mock-congress convergence, student leaders from across the state convene to write, debate, and pass legislation just like the actual state legislature. Bills that are passed through both the House and Senate of TISL are ultimately presented to Governor Bredesen for review.

Members of TASSC wrote and sponsored a total of seven bills, four of which were successfully passed:

+ Ban on surface mining for coal in Tennessee

Still Waiting for Bipartisanship

The New York Times editors write: "The voters sent a clear message last week that they do not want the far right of the Republican Party calling the shots in Washington. While the mainstream media has picked up on this, few if any have noticed how the Bush administration is trying to trap the incoming Democratic majority with its absurd funding request for the war on terror."

Senate Democrats Plan Overhaul of Military Tribunals Bill

Gearing up for a major clash with the Bush administration and Republicans in Congress, several key Senate Democrats are planning to overhaul the newly minted legislation governing military tribunals of detainees. Even before it was signed into the law last month, Democrats were criticizing the military commission bill as unconstitutional and a magnet for endless legal challenges.

The same old George

Truthout
by William Rivers Pitt

11/16/06

The first rumblings of the wow-nothing-has-changed-at-all-in-the-White-House phenomenon started last week, when Bush's people intimated that the lame-duck GOP Congress would be tasked to ram through some highly dubious legislation before they get shoved into the minority seats come January. First off, Bush wanted John Bolton, now serving a temp job as UN ambassador, to be permanently confirmed. If any time was available, Bush also wanted Congress to pass blanket approval for his highly controversial and almost certainly illegal warrantless wiretapping program. To wit, he was hoping his pals in Congress would paper over this particular set of broken FISA laws before the new chairmen come in with subpoena power...

Now is the time to lead America

Nashville City Paper
by staff

11/16/06

For the last year, the national media and political pundits have been obsessed with the prospects of which political party would win the 2006 elections. Now, one party has risen to the top, and it is time to govern. ... At the center of the country's political debate is the war in Iraq. Democrats campaigned largely on the need for a change in President George W. Bush's Iraq strategy. After GOP losses on Nov. 7, Bush appeared to acquiesce to the new order and proceeded to sack Defense Sect. Donald Rumsfeld. But, the American people appear to remain unconvinced national Democrats have any more answers to Iraq than the president. An Associated Press/Ipsos poll released this week shows some 57 percent of Americans do not believe Democrats have a plan for Iraq...

Erosion of freedom

Liberty For All

As a person who values his freedom and as an active participant in the political system since before I reached the age to vote I can no longer quietly protest the erosion of freedoms suffered by American citizens on a daily basis. Most people in this country will agree that there have been slow erosions of our freedoms for years. While most people recognize this fact, many do not do anything about it. Loss of liberty is quickly approaching the point of no return and something must be done to take back those liberties we hold dear... (written 03/05/01; posted 11/16/06)

Dump Pelosi?

Slate
by Timothy Noah

11/16/06

I'll admit my timing could be better, since the incoming House Democrats, on a unanimous voice vote, just made Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., speaker of the House. But I think her party should give serious thought to dumping her. The proximate reason, of course, is that she tried (and, thankfully, failed) to install as House majority leader Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa... [editor's note: Interesting. My own reason is that she wasn't willing to put her speakership on the line by making it a package deal -- no Murtha, no Pelosi. The mugging of Murtha

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

11/17/06

Back when the Democrats were AWOL on the Iraq issue, Murtha changed the debate over the war by coming out for a rapid American withdrawal. His stance caused a sensation: here was a conservative Democrat, a veteran Marine, whose campaign chest is heavy with cash from the defense sector, surely no Dennis Kucinich -- and he wants us out now! Close to the military establishment, Murtha is seen to reflect opinion in the senior ranks that this war is unwinnable and likely to spread, stretching the fighting capacity of the world's last superpower to the breaking point. His high-profile stance represented a threat and had to be smashed -- as it was. It is instructive to observe how readily supposedly 'liberal' groups stabbed the antiwar movement in the back by fueling the 'Murtha = corruption' meme ...

Condi's Iraq surprise

Salon
by Mark Benjamin

11/17/06

In late 2005, three Washington insiders with foreign policy expertise were summoned to a meeting with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice -- a little-known event that may end up changing the course of the war in Iraq. The three men were working to help Rep. Frank Wolf, who wanted to create an independent panel to overhaul the Bush administration's strategy in Iraq, after a recent trip there left the Virginia Republican worried that the war was headed from bad to worse. The three men, to their surprise, were asked to attend a meeting on Nov. 29, 2005, with Rice, who had been among the core defenders of the Bush administration's war in Iraq...

New Congress vows to clean up act

Christian Science Monitor

11/16/06

The midterm elections that ended GOP control of both House and Senate turned on two overriding themes: the war in Iraq and corruption in Congress. Now, beginning with leadership elections this week, both parties are out to show voters they got the message. For Democrats, united in a keen desire not to slip back into the minority in 2008, a first step is the promise of a new style of leadership on Capitol Hill: open, bipartisan, and above reproach -- and an agenda anchored in the needs of the average American family. 'Voters rejected the Bush agenda, but they haven't yet embraced us,' said Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, who was elevated Tuesday to No. 3 in the Democratic leadership after chairing the party's senatorial campaign committee to a victory few of his colleagues believed would happen. 'What we have here could vanish if we don't do the job.'"
