Journalist Jailed for Refusing to Turn Over Protest Footage

"24-year-old independent journalist Josh Wolf has gone to prison protecting press freedom," writes Sarah Olson. "At a time when the mainstream press is increasingly cowed into silence or submission by the Bush administration, and when a member of the Associated Press Board of Directors also sits on the board of Lockheed Martin, standing up for integrity in journalism is a lot for one 24-year-old to take on."

Republicans don't want your vote to count

Last week, in the wake of numerous problems with electronic voting machines in recent primary elections, I asked for your help to urge Congress to support my "Confidence in Voting Act" -- a bill that would make paper ballots available at every polling place to any voter who wants one.

More than 15,000 people joined our effort and emailed their Members of Congress about this important legislation. Thank you so much for your support!

While every Democratic Senator stood with us -- in particular, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), an original co-author of the "Help America Vote Act" -- the Republicans stopped us and refused to allow this common-sense legislation to move forward.

I'm very disappointed that the Republican Party continues to play politics with the integrity of our elections system. And really, there is only one conclusion that I can reach: Democratic Senators are united in their desire to restore confidence in our voting system, while Republican Senators are supporting the status quo...again!

So what do we do now? Over the next 35 days we must redouble our efforts to get everyone we know -- our friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues -- out to vote on Election Day. In local races, in statewide races, in House races, and in Senate races, every single vote is incredibly important -- especially with the future of our country on the line.

Then, once Democrats are in control of Congress -- as well as more governors' offices and statehouses -- we'll do the work that the Republicans refuse to do: address the real problems that still exist in our nation's elections system.

Thanks for your continued support!

In Friendship,

Barbara Boxer

Kissinger's Bad Advice on Iraq

Ivan Eland writes: "The bellwether of the cautious establishment press, Bob Woodward, has finally unloaded both barrels on the Bush administration's Iraq policy in his new book 'State of Denial.'" Eland continues: "The Bush administration's main advisor during the war has been Henry Kissinger. Kissinger, according to Woodward's book, apparently has convinced the Bush White House that any troop withdrawals from Iraq will start a wave of public pressure to pull out all US forces from Iraq."

Judge May Have Stymied Abramoff Probe

The bribery investigation involving influence-peddler Jack Abramoff may have been stymied by a federal judge in Florida just as prosecutors began asking questions about the lobbyist's ties to the White House. US District Judge Paul Huck refused to delay Abramoff's prison sentence for fraud charges Thursday, rejecting a plea by the Justice Department's top corruption prosecutor, who said Abramoff was providing information about officials whose names hadn't yet surfaced in the case.

Foley Scandal a Disaster for GOP

Republican strategists said yesterday that public revulsion over the sexually graphic online conversations between Congressman Mark Foley (R-Fla.) and former House pages could compound the party's problems enough to tip the House to the Democrats in November - and could jeopardize the party's hold on the Senate as well.

Why Capitol Pages Fear Retaliation

Robert Parry writes: "In a very perverse way, the story of the emails and the pages does represent one of the fundamental lessons of working in today's one-party Washington: Whether in politics, intelligence or journalism, avoid doing or saying anything that offends powerful Republicans." Parry goes on to say that pages "recognize that divulging what Foley did to them could kill their hopes for future careers in politics."

Global Warming on the Forest Floor

October 3, 2006

By HENRY FOUNTAIN

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/03/science/03observ.html

Along with rising temperatures, global warming is very likely to cause a shift toward more extreme weather — stronger storms with more rainfall, and longer and more severe droughts. Those changes are likely to have large-scale, obvious effects on farmlands, grasslands and forests and on the creatures that inhabit them.

But many smaller, more subtle effects are likely too. Researchers at the University of Kentucky looked at one: the impact of climate change on the decomposition of leaf litter on the forest floor.

The researchers, Janet R. Lensing and David H. Wise, studied the process of leaf decay in hardwood forests in central Kentucky. The main instigator in leaf decay is fungi, which get nutrients from the organic matter. But fungi don’t exist in a vacuum. They are grazed upon by springtails, primitive insects of the Collembola order. In turn, springtails are the prey of wandering spiders.

The who-eats-whom makes for a complex web, where changes at one level can have cascading effects. Too much or too little grazing by springtails, for example, can reduce fungal activity and slow decay.

Environmental changes can have an impact, too, and that’s what the researchers studied. They set up forest plots and manipulated precipitation to match anticipated future levels, both wet and dry. They didn’t see much change in leaf decomposition under higher-rainfall conditions. But under drought conditions, they found, decay accelerated significantly. Their findings are published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“Our hypothesis is that during drought conditions, the fungi are already drought-stressed, and the Collembola are overgrazing them, which slows down decay,” Dr. Lensing said. Under these circumstances, by preying on the springtails, the spiders reduce the pressure on the fungi, thus allowing for more leaf decay. Under wetter conditions the fungi are not so stressed and so easily overgrazed, so spider predation on springtails has less effect.

It’s not that the dryness has a direct influence on populations of spiders, say, or springtails. Instead, Dr. Lensing said, “it affects how the cascading occurs” within the food web. This indirect impact on leaf decay, she added, “shows how complex the effect of altered rainfall can be.”

Survival Diet, for Frogs

Here’s a question that ecologists have wondered about for years: Is there a connection between how widespread a species is — the size of the territory it covers — and its diet?

One idea is that a species with a restricted range should have a specialized diet, in part because there is a less diverse selection of foods available in a smaller area. By the same reasoning, a species with a broad range should have a more varied diet, because there are more menu choices.

Selection might come into play as well. With a species shoehorned into a small space, there is a greater likelihood that any adaptation — to a single food source, for example — will spread through the species. This is less likely in a species with a broader range, where there would always be some mixing among individuals from different environments.

It’s a nice idea. But a new study shows the opposite is true, at least for rainforest frogs from the wet tropics area of northeastern Australia.

Yvette M. Williams of James Cook University and colleagues studied the stomach contents of 11 related frog species with ranges from 2,500 square miles to slightly more than 1 square mile (on a single mountaintop). All of the frogs dined on ants, spiders, beetles and other bugs, but the species with the smallest ranges had the most diverse diets. Those with the largest ranges ate mostly ants. The findings were reported in Biology Letters.

The researchers suggest that another hypothesis might explain this. The smaller the range, the more prone a species is to extinction. A small-range species that depends on one food source, then, risks being wiped out if that food source dries up. But one that is a generalist eater can better survive the vagaries of the food supply.

Silk Stockings, for Spiders

Web-spinning spiders have specialized organs, called spinnerets, that produce silk. They are usually located on the underside of the abdomen.

But scientists have discovered that a species of tarantula also secretes silk through its feet. The spider may use the fibers to help it climb slick surfaces.

Stanislav N. Gorb of the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Germany and colleagues made the discovery in zebra tarantulas, found in Costa Rica. The spider, which is about an inch and a half long, produces the silk through tiny nozzles in the base of the feet. The finding was reported in the journal Nature.

Like other spiders, the zebra tarantula also has thousands of tiny hairs on its feet that help it stick to surfaces through molecular attraction. But the researchers found that the foot silk, laid down as tracks, helped the spider walk on vertical surfaces. In experiments on glass, the researchers found that if the spiders slipped, the silk arrested their fall.

It’s not known if other spider species also have this capability. But however widespread it is, the researchers say, it raises new questions about the evolution of silk-making. Foot production of silk may be the ancestral condition, with spinneret production evolving later. Or the two may have evolved independently. Comparison of the genes involved in silk production from the feet and from spinnerets, the researchers say, should provide some clues.

Springtime on Uranus

With their swirling atmospheres, gaseous planets occasionally produce dark spots (Jupiter’s red spot being the most famous example). Spots are rare on Uranus, however, and no definitive images of them have ever been obtained.

Now, though, Lawrence Sromovsky of the University of Wisconsin and other astronomers have used the Hubble Space Telescope to produce clear images of a dark spot in the atmosphere of Uranus.

The spot, about 1,900 miles long and 1,100 miles wide, is in the planet’s northern hemisphere. The researchers say the spot may be new, a result of gradual warming of the northern hemisphere as Uranus moves into “spring” in its 84-year orbit around the Sun. Victory for people power

CHRYSTON and Muirhead residents claimed a victory this week after a bid to extend a mobile phone mast near a primary school was blocked.

Telecommunications firm Arqiva had applied to North Lanarkshire Council for a 3metre extension to the 22.5metre mast near Drumcavel Road and St Barbara's Primary School.

They had also applied for the addition of three antennae and an equipment cabinet.

A spokesperson for Chryston Community Council said: "We are really happy with the outcome.

"We objected to the mast going up in the first place.

"We tried to find out about the radiation effects in 1996 and were told there was nothing to worry about.

"But we were not convinced and were worried about the effects it could have on the children."

Local councillor Joe Shaw said he supports the community council's campaign and thanked his colleagues at North Lanarkshire Council for refusing the application.

He said: "It's a good decision. No one has convinced us that there is not a link to radiation from these masts.

"We will need to wait and see the outcome when the company appeals the council's decision."

David Porch, director of planning and environment at North Lanarkshire Council, said: "The application was refused on the grounds that the increase in height of the existing telecommunications mast would be detrimental to the amenity of the area, in that the higher mast would be more visible to residents of Muirhead and Mount Ellen and the primary school."

A spokesperson for Arqiva said: "We are disappointed the extension has been refused and will discuss this with O2, on whose behalf we are seeking this change.

"It is thought the development of existing towers is preferable to additional towers being built."

Gas drilling increasing in rural areas of West Slope

By By BOBBY MAGILL
The Daily Sentinel

Tuesday, October 03, 2006

http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/content/news/stories/2006/10/03/10_3_1a_Gas_Well_Projections.html

Thousands of new natural-gas wells are expected to be drilled in the Piceance Basin next year, while energy companies could begin to turn their sights to one of the Western Slope’s least explored energy reserves.

The Paradox Basin of western Montrose County could be next in line for expanded oil and gas development, said Brian Macke, director of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

“The Paradox Basin is probably one of the most under-explored and under-developed parts of the state for oil and gas,” Macke said Monday.

There will likely be an “elevated level of interest” among energy companies in developing there, he said.

Most of the Western Slope’s energy development over the next year will be in the Piceance Basin, where thousands of gas wells now exist.

As long as gas prices remain high — currently about $5 per million British thermal units — the commission expects at least 2,000 new natural gas wells to be drilled in northwestern Colorado annually.

Macke said he can’t predict how many wells will be drilled in the next decade, however.

This year, natural gas drilling in Mesa County is expected to surpass that of 2005, Macke said. The commission has issued 205 natural gas permits to drill so far in 2006, with 275 expected. Last year, 136 permits were issued.

In Garfield County, the focal point of energy development on the Western Slope, the commission has issued 1,355 permits to drill so far this year, with 1,600 expected. Last year, 1,509 permits were issued.

Drilling in Rio Blanco County is expected to double this year over 2005, Macke said. About 400 permits to drill are expected to be issued this year for the county, where only 161 permits were issued in 2005.

So far, 280 permits have been written for Rio Blanco County.

Over the last two years, energy companies have shown little interest in developing areas of the Western Slope south of Mesa County.

The commission issued no permits to drill in Montrose County in 2005 and only one so far this year. Forty-seven permits to drill were issued for San Miguel County in 2005, and 29 so far in 2006.

But more than 24,500 acres in both counties are up for lease in the Bureau of Land Management’s Nov. 9 oil and gas lease sale.

Most of the parcels on the auction block in Montrose County, totaling more than 12,400 acres, are along Colorado Highway 141 north of Naturita.

The San Miguel County parcels in the lease sale, totaling 12,227 acres, are along Highway 141 north of Egnar.

Part 1

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Bill Moyers about his surprising October documentaries, the state of American journalism, and what we can all do to make a difference. Interesting stuff. "Capitol Crimes," part one of the series "Moyers on America," follows the Abramoff money trail. If you want to know how Abramoff did it, what part DeLay played, who's getting hurt and who profited - make sure you're sitting down, and watch "Capitol Crimes," airing October 4th on PBS. This documentary is sobering. Parts two and three of my interview will examine the second and third broadcasts in the series, "Is God Green?" airing October 11th, and "The Net at Risk," airing October 18th. Stay tuned. - Marc Ash

Marc Ash Interviews Bill Moyers - Part III: "The Net at Risk"

The future of the Internet is up for grabs. Last year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) effectively eliminated net neutrality rules, which ensured that every content creator on the Internet - from big-time media concerns to backroom bloggers - had equal opportunity to make their voice heard. Now, large and powerful corporations are lobbying Washington to turn the World Wide Web into what critics call a "toll road," threatening the equitability that has come to define global democracy's newest forum. In Part III of our interview, Marc Ash Spoke to Bill Moyers about this important issue. Moyers on America: "The Net@Risk" airs Wednesday, October 18, on your local PBS station.

Those of us who argue that a system of free enterprise is far superior to one of control by government regulators are always tagged by our foes as lackeys of the rich, the powerful and big corporations. It is true that I often defend wealthy corporations against those who want to loot them. Yet I hold no illusions that corporate leaders are somehow on 'our' side when it comes to issues of freedom and property rights. ... This situation is on full display in the campaign to stop Proposition 90, the statewide Protect Our Homes initiative that will be on the November ballot. If it passes, the initiative will mean the end of two troubling and common policies in California. The first is eminent domain abuse, by which cities take property from small businesses and homeowners and give it to big developers who promise to pay more sales taxes than the current owners. The second is regulatory takings, whereby governments 'take' property through regulations such as downzoning, often obliterating the value of a property without paying compensation...

How Bush admitted his war crimes

Common Dreams

09/30/06

It was brilliantly deceptive, trumping even his orchestrated dishonesty in leading us to war. Buried in the 94 pages of the Military Commissions Act of 2006-the 'detainee act' or the 'torture bill' -- the Bush Administration tacitly admits it has committed war crimes. ... The Military Commissions Act of 2006 is retroactive. It shall 'take effect as of November 26, 1997, as if enacted [on that date].' Nothing the Bush Administration has done can be called into question. Why would the Bush people write these several requirements into a law? Only if they are guilty of committing war crimes and know they will face prosecution. Though ingeniously obscured, this is a de facto admission of guilt...

The medieval detainee bill

Common Dreams
by Jacqueline Marcus

10/01/06

There are laws that represent an Enlightened Age and, conversely, there are laws that represent a Dark Age. Today, our Congress has abolished, in Molly Ivins' words, 'a safeguard against illegal imprisonment that has endured as a cornerstone of legal justice since the Magna Carta,' and replaced it with barbaric laws. With a single vote, they've done away with a humane, civil right: the right to know what charges detainees' have been accused of and the detainees' right to challenge those accusations in a court of law. The traditional saying is every person has a right to a trial, a right to confront his/her accuser and to challenge the accusations. It is a profound safeguard to protect the innocent. These humane laws that characterize a civilized nation have been usurped by a medieval oligarch: According to the new archaic law, George W. Bush determines the final fate of detainees, many of whom were innocent Afghani farmers, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. That fate is cruel and unusual. No presumption of innocence. The punishment is either life in prison or death...

Only soft hearted civil libertarians and senators from safe Democratic seats really care about the rights of likely terrorists. But the Golden Rule is the reason for international law. It is the underlying moral force, what gives it any chance at all of being law. We cannot simply rewrite the Geneva Convention for purposes of how we treat them; it cannot help but apply to how they, whoever in the world steps up as they, treat us. If you think about the detainee bill from the perspective of how we should treat terrorists, it's a no-brainer...

This schizophrenic role, which his bipartisan fans somehow miss, happens to position McCain perfectly for 2008 as the guy untarnished by all the bad stuff Bush brought us, but who continues the same regime. Consider the two disgraceful pieces of extra-constitutional legislation that the Bush loyalists are ramming through Congress, first over McCain's objection, then with his help: One is a law prompted by a Supreme Court ruling in June holding that the government could not set up kangaroo courts at Guantanamo and elsewhere, depriving defendants of all normal rights. When men die pointlessly in a war they know cannot be won and that means nothing to them, when they realize that they are dying for the egos of draft-dodging politicians safe in Washington -- they will revolt. It happened before. It will happen again. But when? Next year, I'd guess. It is important to understand that officers and enlisted men are very different animals. For example, enlisted men do things (drive the tank, repair the helicopter) whereas officers are chiefly administrators. But the important difference is psychological. Enlisted men are blue-collar guys or technicians. They carry little ideological overburden. They want to fix the tank or finish the field exercise and then go drink beer and get laid. Above all, they are realists. If the new radio doesn't work, or Baghdad turns out to be a tactically irresolvable nightmare, the enlisted guys feel very little urge to pretend otherwise...

Woodward’s 60 Minutes bloodbath

By Mike Whitney

Veteran journalist Bob Woodward can always be counted on to tell the truth… after all the other options have been exhausted. His new book doesn’t veer too far from the pattern he’s followed his entire career; one minute he’s the “kingmaker” dishing up hearty-helpings of literary tripe like “Bush at War” and “Plan of Attack” and the next minute he’s ramming a scimitar into the lower lumbar region of his prey.

How Pakistan became an ally

Musharraf says he “war gamed” a U.S. attack and concluded his nation would lose. But many Pakistanis believe Musharraf was far too eager to comply with Washington’s diktat and to turn against Pakistan’s old friends and allies in return for $4 billion of U.S. aid and secret CIA stipends distributed to Pakistan’s ruling elite.

Protest over phone mast

By Nicola Fenn

John Dornan, councillor for Laindon Park, MP John Baron and resident and campaign leader Jeffrey Goodwin

A row has erupted between Basildon Council and phone giant O2 over the position of a 15-metre-high phone mast in Laindon.

Fierce objections were made by residents, councillors and local schools, when plans for the telecommunications mast at the roundabout at West Mayne and Durham Road, arrived at Basildon Council's planning office.

The council objected to the site, but offered an alternative, at Mayne House in Fenton Way, which they claim O2 accepted.

However O2 insist they never received any suggestions and as 56 days has expired from when the application went in, the company is perfectly within its rights to start work.

Workmen began installing an equipment cabinet and cable lines last week, much to the dismay of local residents.

Maxwell Atkins, of Roosevelt Road, said: "I think it's absolutely disgusting these people can put these things where they want, without any reference to anybody.

"Democracy is thrown out of the window and it doesn't much matter what the residents say or that any council objections count."

Planning enforcement officers at Basildon Council are now investigating the reports.

John Dornan, councillor for Laindon Park, said his phone has been ringing "off the wall" with residents complaining about the work.

He said: "They can't ride roughshod over the people of Laindon and we will stand and fight them."

Jim Stevenson, spokesman for O2 explained how after 56 days, if the local planning authority has not approved or rejected the plans, they can automatically start work.

He said: "The council did write and said they would rather we didn't put it there and we waited for something else to come back from them and it never did.

"Of course we would come back straight away if another site was suggested - we would rather have a local planning authority talk to us.

"Now we've started the work, it's difficult to break it off so we will continue, but we would be willing to move it."

MP John Baron was horrified to hear of O2's behaviour.

He is already involved in the issue after it was revealed 3G technology will mean four times as many masts are required, to support the new service.

He said: "The whole planning issue around phone masts needs to be shaken up.

"We all want to be able to use mobile phones, but this mustn't mean masts are constructed without any regard to the wellbeing of local people.

"It is time for the Government to stop ignoring the views of communities and change the planning laws in favour of residents."

The Militarization of MySpace

Nick Turse warns us that the militarization of MySpace is just the latest Pentagon effort to occupy a new realm that will put the military product in front of ever more young eyes. The role of "friendly" MySpace.com, taking a desperate military's money to target their hordes of young friends searching for popularity online, is troubling. But it's also typical of the business-side of the military-corporate complex, because it's the civilian firms - producing everything from weapons to web sites - that allow the military to function as it does. In the case of MySpace, the friendly firm is deeply involved in producing the Army's page and will, says Eaton, be "doing the daily maintenance" on it.

The right-wing coalition of political dominance may be cracking up

Things Fall Apart

Paul Krugman writes: "Right after the 2004 election, it seemed as if Thomas Frank had been completely vindicated. In his book 'What's the Matter With Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America,' Mr. Frank argued that America's right wing had developed a permanent winning strategy based on the use of "values" issues to mobilize white working-class voters against a largely mythical cultural elite, while actually pursuing policies designed to benefit a small economic elite. It was and is a brilliant analysis. But the political strategy Mr. Frank described may have less staying power than he feared. In fact, the right-wing coalition that has spent 40 years climbing to its current position of political dominance may be cracking up."

CONFRONT Bush To WIN

THE WAY TO WIN IS BY CALLING BUSH THE LIAR THAT HE IS

There is one thing we know. The politics of avoiding a confrontation for fear of being smeared is NOT the path to victory. This we know, that the only way to win back those of other parties who are also angry at being misled is by demonstrating the courage of our own leadership.

SUPPORT THE LIE/DIE TV SPOTS: http://www.peaceteam.net/donations.php

And there is a movement right now, The Peace Team, growing amongst our candidates themselves to form their OWN consensus about what must be done to correct the biggest lie of all, the war and occupation without end of Iraq. These candidates agree on one fundamental truth, that our troops in Iraq must START to come home now.

At the same time, more and more of these candidates are producing their own version of the Lie/Die TV spot you may have already seen, calling out the Bush administration, and their local incumbent, on the lies and patriotic happy talk that mislead us to this grim juncture in the first place.

We have been told we must take the fight to the enemy. That enemy is not the Iraqi people themselves, at least it was not before, but that enemy DOES include the lies and deceptions that got us there in the first place. THAT is what we must confront. THAT is what we must challenge. And only by doing that, directly and in their faces, can we win back the votes of our neighbors who were swayed by those who only appeared strong in their swagger.

Our game plan is simple, to inspire as many candidates as possible to run their own variation of the Lie/Die TV spot, the most powerful expression we have seen confronting the despicable falsehoods which have constituted the foreign policy of the Bush administration. Their only possible salvation is hoping to cow us once again, to intimidate us from challenging their wall to wall lies.

We will NOT be cowed. We will NOT be intimidated. And neither will the candidates on The Peace Team. But to get the message of truth out they will need your help, your contributions, to run these Lie/Die TV spots in their own districts, and demonstrate to their constituents that there IS a courageous alternative to vote for.

That is why the Peace Team has set up a special donations page where you can contribute to all the Peace Team candidates who are ready to go with their Lie/Die TV spots right now. There are seven there already, by tomorrow there will be at least a couple more, and more every successive day with your support and encouragement.

SUPPORT THE LIE/DIE TV SPOTS: http://www.peaceteam.net/donations.php

Please go to The Peace Team donations page now. You can see the spots playing right on the page above. Give whatever you can in these last critical 5 weeks of this Congressional election campaign. The future of our democracy is on the line. This is our last chance to take back our country from the dark side of dictatorial ambition. We must give it everything we've got. Only then do we have a chance for a brighter tomorrow.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours.

More Action on Lt. Watada's Stand Against the War

http://ent.groundspring.org/EmailNow/pub.php?module=URLTracker&cmd=track&j=98767012&u=935609

If you have a minute, stand up for Lt. Watada's opposition to the Iraq War by voicing your protest against new charges filed against him on Sept. 15. Fort Lewis' Commander, Lieutenant General James Dubik, makes the final decision on whether to proceed to court-martial on any or all charges.

Below is a sample letter. Put it on your own stationery, handwritten if possible, and send priority or express for extra impact:

Commanding General Fort Lewis and I Corps
Lt. Gen. James M. Dubik
Bldg 2025 Stop 1
Fort Lewis WA 98433

Dear Lt. Gen. Dubik:

Along with tens of thousands, I support Lt. Ehren Watada's right to refuse an illegal war.

I ask that you not bring court martial proceedings against him. I write to you personally to let you know how I feel about this crucial moral issue.

If there is a court-martial, I will notify friends in the area to visit Ft. Lewis. I may (or will) also attend myself.

Sincerely,

If you prefer to call, Lt. Gen. Dubik can be reached via his aide at 253-967-0022, and/or call the Ft. Lewis switchboard at 253-967-1110. These numbers often refer "Lt. Watada's supporters" to the Fort Lewis Public Affairs Office at 206-967-7166.

Take a moment today to phone and write Lt. Gen. James Dubik and respectfully request "no court martial for Lt. Watada." Your phone calls and letters now could make a difference. Forward this action alert to friends.

On Sept. 15, the Army escalated their case to silence Lt. Watada by adding a charge of speech crime, based on Lt. Watada's speech to a Veterans for Peace Convention on August 12. On August 17, U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada succeeded in placing the war on trial during an Article 32 pre-trial hearing in a military courtroom at Fort Lewis. The investigating officer recommended that Lt. Watada be referred to a general court martial on all charges -- including five charges for political speech.

When writing, please consider a handwritten letter on stationary (if available) posted via express or priority mail for additional impact and timely delivery. We expect that Lt. Gen. Dubik will soon issue his decision, but there is no required timeline. Do not delay and take action today. The contact address and phone numbers for Lt. Gen. Dubik may change over the course of this action alert, so check ThankYouLt.org for these and other updates.

For the first time since 1965, the military is prosecuting an objector for his opinions.

Jason Leopold reports that in February 2001, seven months before 9/11, George Tenet, then the director of the CIA, testified before Congress and told lawmakers that the single greatest threat to the United States was Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network, according to a little known copy of Tenet's Congressional testimony. During his report to Congress, Tenet eerily described a scenario that seven months later would become a grim reality.

Protesters’ joy as mast plan ditched

PEOPLE in Weeke are celebrating after a mobile phone giant decided it no longer needed a phone mast in Stockbridge Road.

O2 was proposing to install a 15m monopole at the junction with Burnett Close, near the former Chimneys pub, but decided instead to use other resources to enhance coverage in the area.

Winchester anti-mast campaigner, Karen Barratt, a representative of the Wessex Registry of Active Masts, hoped the decision was permanent, and not just put on the backburner until the uncertain future of the area - which has been targeted by two supermarkets - is resolved.

She said: "I'm very pleased. The whole point of doing pre-application consultation is to listen, and it's good that for once they have listened to local people and local feeling.

"People don't want to live near phone masts and they have listened.

"I just wish they did this more often and I'm very pleased they've backed off."

Nick Simpson, who lives opposite the proposed site in Thistledown Close, said he was "absolutely delighted" by the "tremendous news".

He added: "It's great they have seen reason and decided to operate within their existing resources."

St Barnabas Ward councillor, Eileen Berry, who spoke up against the plans for the mast because of its close proximity to a primary school and play area, said: "It was a ridiculous place to have one, and it wouldn't have done any one any good there."

A spokesman for O2, said: "We have abandoned the Stockbridge Road idea.

"We have managed to fill a gap by tweaking other antennae, and at this moment in time, it looks like it will be a permanent decision."

ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS 'TOUGHENING UP' POLICIES TO CONTROL TELECOMMUNICATIONS MASTS

The National Assembly's EPC Committee has considered the planning process by which permissions for telecommunication masts are granted. The Committee's recommendation will now be put before a full session of the National Assembly on 11th of October when AM's will decide on a series of proposals designed to introduce new controls on the development of masts. Commenting on the Committee proposals, Chair Glyn Davies said: "We are making proposals which will introduce much greater control by Local Planning Authorities on the location of new telecommunication masts. The Committee is proposing that masts below 15feet in height should, for the first time, have to secure planning permission before they can go ahead. We also believe that the Minister should give clearer guidance to Local Planning Authorities about how they take Health Impact Assessments into account. And we also recommended that the Government strengthens its Code of Practice on mobile phone network development. Many people, the length and breadth of Wales, are deeply concerned about the impact of telecommunications masts and we have made proposals to the Assembly Government which would help satisfy some of these concerns. It will be up to the AM's to decide which of these proposals are accepted."

9/11 Panel Not Told That Tenet Warned Rice in July

Members of the September 11 commission said today that they were alarmed that they were told nothing about a White House meeting in July 2001 at which George J. Stay the course in Iraq? What course?

Christian Science Monitor
by Daniel Schorr

09/29/06

"President Bush likes to say he will stay the course in Iraq. The question is: What course? Is it the course that has so far cost some 2,700 American lives, 100 Iraqi lives a day, and an estimated expenditure of $300 billion so far? Is it the course, which, according to a leaked consensus estimate of the US intelligence community, has made Iraq a primary recruitment vehicle for the next generation of violent extremists and weakened the global fight against terrorism? The president has said that Iraq is the central battleground in the war against terrorism. But the intelligence agencies suggest that if this is so, it is only because the war has made it so. Intelligence czar John Negroponte puts it delicately when he says that there have been some notable successes, but that there is still much to be done in the war against terrorism. But the intelligence estimate seems to agree with Osama bin Laden, who said on a videotape released last January that the number of fighters was increasing and Iraq had become 'a point of attraction and recruitment'...

The Military Commissions Act of 2006 governing the treatment of detainees is the culmination of relentless fear-mongering by the Bush administration since the September 11 terrorist attacks. Because the bill was adopted with lightning speed, barely anyone noticed that it empowers Bush to declare not just aliens, but also U.S. citizens, 'unlawful enemy combatants.' ... The bill also strips habeas corpus rights from detained aliens who have been declared enemy combatants. Congress has the constitutional power to suspend habeas corpus only in times of rebellion or invasion. The habeas-stripping provision in the new bill is unconstitutional and the Supreme Court will likely say so when the issue comes before it. Although more insidious, this law follows in the footsteps of other unnecessarily repressive legislation. In times of war and national crisis, the government has targeted immigrants and dissidents...

The illusion of freedom is long gone, buried under a morass of laws designed to crush our spirits. All that's left is the decaying corpse of an ideal, an ideal that many people still believe in. H..., I believe in it myself! Unfortunately, the only ones who profit by continuing the ideal are the maggots in positions of power, feeding off what's left of our freedoms. That doesn't change the fact that unless we begin to take active steps to bring the ideal back to life, we are condemned to live in a police state for the foreseeable future. Worse, our kids and grandkids will have to face that as well. And they won't even have the memory of what once was to hearten them...

The received wisdom informs us that the American public has tired of George Bush and his use of lies and other deceptions to fashion a war-crazed police-state. Then, we are further led to believe, the sociopathic madness that has metastasized from inside the 'beltway' will have come to an end, and -- like members of any lynch mob who later reflect on their deed -- most Americans will rediscover their lost sense of sanity and decency. I accept none of this foolish thinking...

Are you an "unlawful combatant?"

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

Congress has now granted the president the powers of a dictator. The rest of the story of our slide into absolutism is merely a matter of filling in the details. Our rulers will naturally continue to pretend that we live in a normal democratic country, that the Constitution still means something, and that nothing essential has really changed -- but, of course, everything has changed, as the post-9/11 War Party has relentlessly argued, and we had better get used to it. Because if you very vocally and aggressively refuse to get used to it, they can and perhaps one day will come for you...

NIS tries to blame lawyer for Gitmo problems

Reporters Without Borders

09/27/06

Reporters Without Borders voiced outrage today at US military attempts to threaten and discredit British lawyer Clive Stafford-Smith, who is defending an Al-Jazeera cameraman, Sudanese citizen Sami Al-Haj, held at the US navy's Guantanamo Bay base since 13 June 2002. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is trying to claim that Stafford-Smith encouraged three Guantanamo Bay detainees to commit suicide. 'Do the Guantanamo military authorities think they can escape blame for the inhuman treatment of their detainees by making such stupid and crass accusations against Stafford-Smith?' Reporters Without Borders asked. 'Defence rights are constantly flouted at Guantanamo. Lawyers can barely get access to their clients. It is hard to see how a lawyer could advise three detainees to commit suicide when he was not even defending them. This alone is sufficient grounds to close the camp...

EU, US miss passenger data deadline

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

10/01/06

The United States and the European Union failed to reach a new deal on sharing air passenger data by Saturday's deadline, though officials said negotiations would continue. The issue has raised serious privacy concerns in Europe. The lack of an agreement will cause a 'legal vacuum,' Jonathan Todd, a spokesman for the European Commission, said in an interview from Brussels. But, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the failure to agree won't disrupt trans-Atlantic air travel...

Take a Stand Against Global Climate Change - Pledge Action Today! October 4th is ENERGY STAR Change a Light Day. Become part of this national movement and help reduce the risks of global climate change by pledging to replace at least one standard lightbulb with an energy-efficient, ENERGY STAR qualified lightbulb!*

By signing, you will join over 80 thousand people who have already pledged to reduce global warming by reducing their home energy use!

Why become part of this growing number of people taking steps to save energy and help fight global climate change? Consider the following facts:

* Your home can cause twice as much greenhouse gas emissions as your car.

* Energy-efficient lighting requires 2/3 less energy than standard lighting, generates 70% less heat, and lasts up to 10 times longer.

* Changing to energy-efficient lighting is a simple step we can each take to preserve energy resources, save money and help protect our environment.

Silencing the People & 9-11

by Devvy Kidd

"The compromise legislation, which is racing toward the White House, authorizes the president to seize American citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have never left the United States. And once thrown into military prison, they cannot expect a trial by their peers or any other of the normal protections of the Bill of Rights.".....

Against Deportations from the UK to any country that practises torture

A message from Eleanor

Please sign this petition and tell the Home Secretary of the UK that you believe deportation to torture is wrong. The people he is targeting are innocent - but even were they guilty of anything no human being should be deported to a country where they could be tortured. Please help these political pawns, these innocent men - some of whom were tried in the ridiculous 'ricin plot' trial and found innocent - there was no ricin and there was no plot - it was a MI5 set-up that was laughed at by the jury!!
Other targets have never even been questioned!!!! but are in prison or under control orders. Imagine being a suspect with no chance to answer the accusations against you. Imagine seeking refuge only to be used in a political game!

Powell Tried to Warn Bush on Iraq

Colin L. Powell, in his last face-to-face meeting with President Bush before stepping down as secretary of state in January 2005, tried to impress upon him one last time the dangers he saw the United States facing in Iraq.

"Not a Graceful Exit" for GOP-Led Congress

Republicans scored significant legislative victories in the closing hours: They pushed through the bill for detainee trials after weeks of internal squabbling; they won approval for 698 miles of border fencing to show that they are serious about cracking down on illegal immigration; they passed spending bills for defense and domestic security; and they enacted new port-security initiatives. But the finale did not go according to script.

If we are going to defeat the enemy, we must reject the use of fear and terrorism to divide America for political advantage

Blinded by Hindsight

"If we are going to defeat the enemy, we must reject the use of fear and terrorism to divide America for political advantage. And we must not let ourselves get trapped in pointless, partisan debates that result only in having the past obscure the future," concludes Richard Clarke.

Ohio Justices' Campaign Cash Under Scrutiny

In the weeks before the 2004 election, Justice O'Donnell's campaign accepted thousands of dollars from the political action committees of three companies that were defendants in the suits. Two of the cases dealt with defective cars, and one involved a toxic substance. Weeks after winning his race, Justice O'Donnell joined majorities that handed the three companies significant victories. Justice O'Donnell's conduct was unexceptional.
