Republicans' Financial Edge Erodes

The traditional fundraising advantage held by incumbent lawmakers - which Republicans have regarded as a safety wall in their effort to keep control of Congress - has eroded in many closely contested House races, as many Democratic challengers prove competitive in the race for cash.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Plaguing US Troops

There are times when Trinette Johnson's life seems to stall, when she finds herself staring at the ceiling fan in her bedroom, watching the blades spin, her mind hung on nothing - not her receptionist job, not her fiancé, not her ailing father or her four children. Not even the war. As these women have returned home, Army researchers studying the psychological fallout of Iraq have noted a surprising trend in early studies: Women appear to be showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health troubles at roughly the same rates as men.

WEATHER CHANNEL TO HIGHLIGHT GLOBAL WARMING

The Baxter Bulletin

August 19, 2006

http://www.baxterbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060819/OPINION01/608190315/1014/OPINION

INDIANAPOLIS - The Weather Channel is getting off the fence and into the middle of the global warming debate with a new program that will explore how climate change affects people in this country and elsewhere.

"We're finally saying the weather isn't apolitical and it isn't an act of God -- it's more complicated than that," Heidi Cullen, a climate expert with the 24-hour weather network, said Wednesday during a breakfast meeting at the National Association of Black Journalists convention.

Cullen, who earned a Ph.D. in climatology and ocean-atmosphere dynamics at Columbia University, will host the "The Climate Code," which premieres Oct. 1 on The Weather Channel.

Weather, or at least what to do about it, has been a festering political issue in this country ever since the Republican-dominated Senate refused to ratify the Kyoto Treaty. The pact requires the world's most developed nations to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases believed to be a major cause of a worldwide temperature increase.

While President Bush acknowledges that climate change is a problem, he believes developing new technologies, not mandating emissions standards, is a better solution because it won't wreak havoc with this country's economy.

For the most part, the debate over global warming has taken place among politicians, scientists and activists. But it has not been a high priority for most Americans. Cullen hopes to change this. She wants people to understand that global warming is not an exotic issue and that it directly affects them.

"The climate is connected to energy, which is connected to population, which is connected to the economy," Cullen told me. "So I want each show to start with the science and then eventually lead you to your backyard."

That approach makes a lot of sense to me.

These days there's a lot less disagreement about the existence of global warming than there is about what to do about it. It's on this latter point that the Bush administration and the 114 countries that signed the Kyoto Treaty disagree.

But while the scientific issues surrounding global warming are becoming clearer to many Americans, the way it affects us is not as clear.

For example, the high rate of asthma among black children can be linked to global warming, said Janet Johnson, a vice president with The Weather Channel who is overseeing development of Cullen's show.

"We can directly link that to air pollution," she said. "I'm really hopeful that that won't be too much of a leap for parents to see."

For me, that's the real promise of Cullen's show. If it works, it will help people understand the link between manmade weather changes melting distant polar ice caps and changes in their everyday lives.

Lower-income people living in trailer homes, for example, will be more at risk from hurricanes and tornadoes -- and related flooding -- caused by global warming.

And those who can't afford homes with air conditioning will face increased threats from heat waves, another consequence of climate change.

"Weather was seen as an act of God that you just can't do anything about," Cullen said. "That's not true anymore."

She said "our hand is now helping to guide" the increasingly harsh weather conditions we've experienced in recent years.

If it succeeds in getting that message across, "The Climate Code" will be a valuable addition to The Weather Channel's programming -- and could make the debate over global warming a matter of greater concern to the American people.

Iraq's Spreading Civil War

The debate is over: By any definition, Iraq is in a state of civil war. Indeed, the only thing standing between Iraq and a descent into total Bosnia-like devastation is 135,000 US troops -- and even they are merely slowing the fall. The internecine conflict could easily spiral into one that threatens not only Iraq but also its neighbors throughout the oil-rich Persian Gulf region with instability, turmoil and war.

Note UK radio amateurs still being encouraged by their organisation The Radio Society of Great Britain to believe the microwave 'no evidence' line.

--------

As radio amateurs often support phone anti-mast camapigns with measurement equipment and know-how, this is a clever way to try to alienate the two groups of people!

Interesting that they are still allowing VHF and UHF equipment up to 20 W. (Tx power or EIRP???) Most of the low-height and building mounted base stations that most highly irradiate people fall into this category.

So they cause aggravation to the radio amateur community but still allow the sorts of UHF signals that mast protestors are most worried about.

I think most amateur equipment is probably OK, but I have found some terrible examples of moon-bounce kit in small residential gardens very close to other houses and putting out very high ERPs with lots of side-lobe splatter nearby. I do think that that needs better regulation. Luckily, few amateurs actually experiment with it, especially in new housing estates.

http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/pdf/78518.pdf

I believe that up to 1500 watts can legally be used into a high-gain aerial array of at least 20dB, making an EIRP of 150 kW!

Ofcom acknowledge the UK amateurs have achieved moon-bounce comms on frequencies up to 24 GHz.

I hope this is of interest

Back On Track For IMPEACHMENT

A message from Charles W. Sanders:

A FEDERAL JUDGE HAS RULED, RENEW THE CALLS FOR IMPEACHMENT NOW

ACTION PAGE: http://www.charleswsanders.org/petitions/pnum262.php

On Friday, August 18th, I filed the necessary nominating petition signatures to compete for the Democratic party nomination for the U.S. House in the 3rd District of OH. Due to the sudden and unexpected withdrawal of our candidate, it has been determined that there must be a special election on September 15 to fill the election vacancy

We now have a fresh opportunity to make the case to my constituents that the Bush administration must be peaceably removed from office. This is made all the more urgent by the ruling of a federal judge that the president has categorically broken the law in deliberately violating the 1st and 4th amendments to the Constitution by wiretapping American citizens without warrant. He did so by defying the secret FISA court expressly created to not only prevent such abuses of power but also to protect our real national security in the most diligent possible way.

We hear about the recent police action in Great Britain which successfully disrupted a possible terrorist plot before it was even remotely close to being operational. And all this was done by proper warrant and scrupulously so by our British counterparts. Why is it that our own president cannot protect us without acting as a Constitutional outlaw? Indeed, why cannot he protect us from threats that were of widespread public knowledge, like Hurricane Katrina?

To all my loyal friends an supporters, I ask you again to join me in the fight for real policy change. Based on the momentum we had already developed, and with your continued support, I am confident that my constituents will recognize that the there is one candidate they will always be able to count on to stand strong on the critical issues of our time, Charles W. Sanders. Please submit my renewed action page on impeachment today to keep the pressure on.

Thank you

Charles W. Sanders

ACTION PAGE: http://www.charleswsanders.org/petitions/pnum262.php

We NEED candidates like Charles Sanders to stand up and make an issue of the repeated trangressions of the current administration. Charles needs your help to get his message out for all of us. Please make a contribution now to enable Charles to go to Congress and fight for you on the issues you care about.

DONATIONS LINK: http://www.charleswsanders.org/donations3.html

How many times have you felt helpless and wished you could influence the votes of representatives in other districts to prevail on a critical vote in Congress, but thought you could not do so effectively because you were not one of their own constituents? How much more would you support Charles if you do live in his district?

Here we have a courageous candidate who will fight for all the issues you care about, if only he is given the chance to make the run. Please donate whatever you can to help Charles get on the radio to recruit and mobilize even more people to speak out so we can have a real impact on these policy decisions now and for the future. What would you give to have a whole legislature of people like Charles Sanders? Won't you give him your support now to make that a reality?

We have been valiantly speaking out with action alerts based on one fundamental premise --- either our representatives in Congress would listen to and heed the voices of their people --- or else we would work to replace them in the next election.

The time for the replacement action is NOW.

DONATIONS LINK: http://www.charleswsanders.org/donations3.html

If each of us will just contribute what we can, to the most worthy candidates we can find, it will make a real difference in the kind of Congress we will all have to deal with in 2007. Most importantly, strong showings NOW by candidates who DO have a backbone, and WILL stand up and fight, can send a powerful message to the rest that they better start shaping up or we will ship them out too. Make your donation today and it will have cascading positive effects in many other races for months to come.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

Putting the Iraq War on Trial

When he refused to deploy to Iraq in June, Army Lt. Ehren Watada said he was following his conscience and upholding his duty not to obey illegal orders. Military officials charged him with violating Army rules and sent him on a path toward a likely court-martial. In doing so, they set up an unusual collision between a man who is believed to be the first officer to refuse duty in Iraq and a military justice system that is now effectively being asked to rule on the war's legality.

Mobilfunkantenne wird nicht gebaut

LOMMISWIL

Das Trassee kann nicht als Bauzone betrachtet werden (Foto: mz)

Keine Mobilfunkantenne beim «Tunneli» in Lommiswil.

(mz/ms/pbl)

The relentless proliferation of microwave wireless technology

I have just sent the following letter to the Sussex Argus letters page: letters@theargus.co.uk . Their editorial policy is (1) to try to publish letters with a common theme together (so if only one or two are sent, there is much LESS chance of publication), (2) that they generally be less than 200 words (mine is more but the chances of getting it published would be massively increased with 2 or more letters from other people) and (3) preference given to local senders (contact me for a local address ;-)) gary.kemp7_at_ntlworld.com

Any other contributions greatly appreciated. The Argus has a huge readership. If we can get a debate going in their letters pages, that's what the Editor wants.

Letter below.

Thanks

Brighton

The relentless proliferation of microwave wireless technology in Brighton really worries me.

The latest of thousands of independant scientific papers showing widespread health damage from this technology is analysed by Lloyd Morgan, a Director of the US Central Brain Tumor Registry (see http://www.powerwatch.org.uk ) ; a study of "the worst type of brain tumors: those collectively referred to as "brain cancer" (e.g., gliomas, astrocytomas, glioblastoma multiforme--AKA GBM--etc.)" by research team Hardell et al.

Omega see also under: "On the Hardell studies of phones and the comparison between their research and the Interphone studies"
http://omega.twoday.net/stories/2546167/

The study examined 905 cases of these brain tumors, ages 20 to 80, diagnosed between 1997 and 2003, with 2162 controls. All the teams' previous 12 studies had found increased risks from wireless (Mobile, Analog and DECT) phones.

He continues: "The survival statistics for these tumors are very grim (e.g., one year GBM survival is 29%) and the devastating effects, even if there is survival, can be heartbreaking including loss of physical, emotional and mental abilities"

The study found the risk increased by an average of 25% below 1000 hours of phone use, to 130, 270 and 490% for 2 - 3000 hours for DECT, Cell and Analog phones respectively, and by 20% (all types) for 1 - 5 years use, to 80% (DECT), 140% (Analog) and 180% (mobile) after 10 years.

Morgan states:"the most troubling aspect of the Hardell et al. study is that of the early latency times it is demonstrating with regards to cellphone exposure. It is well known that the time from exposure to a carcinogen to the diagnosis of a tumor takes decades (25 to 40 years), yet we are seeing an increased risk of brain cancer for as short as 1 to 5 years.."

"Could the implication be then, that what we are seeing is actually the tail of a 25 to year latency time distribution?"

I am reminded of the words of Dr Leif Salford, head of a major study into cell phone use in Sweden in the late 1990s, who said "Brain damage from intensive cell phone use is a probability rather than a possibility"

And with researchers worldwide warning particularly against cell phone use by under 16s, I see a very grim future for todays' children.

GOP Goes to Work for Joe Lieberman

"Facing Senator Joseph I. Lieberman's independent candidacy, Republican officials at the state and national level have made the extraordinary decision to abandon their official candidate, and some are actively working to help Mr. Lieberman win in November."

Protesters defeated but campaign goes on

By Robert Fisk

Work under way on the mobile phone mast site BR5144

CAMPAIGNERS have lost their fight against a mobile phone giant and its controversial mast.

Workers for T-Mobile have almost finished putting the mast up on the corner of St Paul's Wood Hill and Beddington Road, St Paul's Cray.

Security guards kept watch at the site last night after angry scenes yesterday when anti-mast protestors - who have fought a six-month battle against the development - attempted to tear barricades down.

Workers arrived early this morning and installed the electronic equipment needed for the mast to work.

Campaigner Sam Anderson, 35, said: "We're all pretty gutted.

"It is just amazing that T-Mobile goes to such an extent to have security guards there overnight and to double barricade themselves in.

"Surely that means nobody wants it."

The mother-of-three is now focusing her attention on organising a mass march through central London to Downing Street.

She is currently waiting for a call from the Met Police to finalise a date for the protest which she hopes will take place as soon as the House of Commons meets after the summer recess.

Call Mrs Anderson on 020 8302 4043 to get involved with the campaign.

T-Mobile has been unavailable for comment since yesterday.

Why Democracies evolve into Dictatorships

By James Cooke

Liberal commentators continue to respond with hysterics or dumfoundedness at the ability of Conservatives to destroy civil liberties while thus far waging three preemptive wars (yes Lebanon is a U.S. war). It should have been clear by now— with the media and Democrats suppressing or supporting the most blatant atrocities engineered by the Republicans— that larger forces are at play.

Bush Must Negotiate to Make America Safer, Say Former Generals

In a letter released Thursday, the group told reporters Bush's 'hard line' policies have undermined national security and made America less safe.

Where there’s fire, there’s global warming

by Matt Jenkins

"I think there was a tendency to think that the overwhelming factor
(driving forest fires) was short-term weather. There’s this idea that drought matters, and it does. But it’s taking time and a lot of research to show that climate plays a big role as well." -- Anthony Westerling

Six years ago, climate scientist Anthony Westerling began obsessively poring over the meticulously detailed invoices that U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service land managers use to itemize firefighting expenses.

"These things will have 170-plus fields," says Westerling — including information on when a fire was first reported, when firefighters finally controlled it, and how many acres were burned. Westerling, who works at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (which also studies climate and earth sciences) in La Jolla, Calif., didn’t aspire to be an accountant, nor was he searching for fraud in government spending. He was hoping to answer a question that had not been seriously asked before: How do rising global temperatures affect wildfire behavior?

Along with fellow researchers in La Jolla and at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Westerling wove the information in the invoices together with data from streamflow gauges, soil moisture measures, and temperature and precipitation records to form a comprehensive picture of the driving forces behind the West’s fires.

The group will present its findings in the journal Science next month; a preliminary article appeared in the July 6 issue of Science Express. The basic conclusion may not startle: Large forest fires increased beginning in the mid-1980s — particularly in the Northern Rockies, the Sierra Nevada and the southern Cascades — and the changes closely correlated with an increase in spring and summer temperatures during the same time period.

But some of the nuances are surprising. Westerling and his colleagues found that a delicate "tipping point" exists, particularly in forests in the Northern Rockies and Northern California. When snowpack melts earlier in the spring — even just a few days sooner — the severity of the fire season intensifies greatly. "It didn’t take a very big temperature increase (to) switch from very few fires to a lot of fires," says Westerling. As spring and summer temperatures gradually increased, "You were getting closer and closer to this tipping point, so that the (climate) variability from year to year just pushes you over it easily."

Westerling grew up in Los Angeles but vacationed at a family cabin on the east side of the Sierra, and later lived abroad in places like Saudi Arabia, China and Brazil. He returned to California to get his Ph.D., and in 2000, he went to work at Scripps. That year proved to be a banner one for fire, and that’s when Westerling began looking more closely at the relationship between climate and fire.

Because of the wide variability in fire regimes throughout the West — from ponderosa forests in the Southwest to chaparral in Southern California to lodgepole pine and spruce-fir forests in the Northern Rockies — long-term trends can be hard to pick out from the year-to-year "noise."

That was precisely the value of Westerling’s research: Zooming out to look at the entire region helped bring the phenomenon into relief.

Usually, blame for the bigger and more frequent fires of the past 20 years is ascribed to the federal government’s aggressive firefighting policies, which have left a lot of dead and small-diameter trees in Western forests ready to burn. Westerling’s research suggests that rising temperatures, not land-management practices, may play a greater role in driving forest fires.

But, he writes, if warming is the main driver of increased fire activity, "ecological restoration and fuels management alone will not be sufficient to reverse current wildfire trends." Scientists and planners must also plug global climate change into their equations.

HELP IDENTIFY THE "REAL ORGANIC CANDIDATES" IN THE 2006 ELECTIONS

The time has come to put organic and related issues on the table for the 2006 elections. Please help us identify local, state, and Congressional politicians seeking office in 2006 who support policies that move us toward a more democratic, healthy, sustainable and re-localized society--with organic agriculture and Fair Trade leading the way. Please take a moment to help OCA's lobbying partner, the Organic Consumers Fund (OCF), identify our real friends and champions. This ambitious, people-powered political candidate survey has the potential to impact local, state, and federal election races across the country.

Please go now to the OCF voter action page and follow the step-by-step instructions to encourage candidates in your area to take part in the "Organic Consumers 2006 Political Candidate Survey." Once your local, state, and Congressional candidates respond, the OCF website will automatically rank them in terms of their response on key issues of health, justice, and sustainability. It's a whole lot easier than you might think, and the results will have a powerful impact. Please locate candidates in your area and send them the survey here: http://www.organicconsumersfund.org/voterguide.cfm

(UNLESS YOU'RE READY FOR AN ELECTORAL REVOLUTION)
The Organic Consumers Fund is a unique and totally grassroots lobbying organization. Every year, agribusiness, biotech, and other powerful special interest groups spend hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying public officials to pass and change legislation in their favor. It's time that we, organic consumers and farmers, make our voices heard--from Main Street to the halls of Congress. To revitalize the country and move in an organic and sustainable direction, we've got to translate our already formidable economic clout in the marketplace into a political force. To do this we need your help. We will not take money from the corporate special interests. All we have is you, the grassroots. The OCF's goal is to raise $50,000 in grassroots donations over the next 30 days, so that we can spread our Candidate Survey to thousands of candidates and follow up with phone calls, emails, and other lobbying efforts. Later in the fall we'll publish our Voter Guide, to help people decide who deserves their vote. Our country, as you know, is facing a terrible crisis, whether we are talking about public health, environmental sustainability, a democratic media and elections, or peace and justice. Help us begin to move in New Directions by putting organic issues on the table in the 2006 elections. Donate now: http://organicconsumersfund.org/donations.cfm
