Congressman Ney Formally Withdraws From Ohio Race

Bob Ney announced he would withdraw from the race a week ago, citing the strain of an intensifying corruption investigation that had focused for months on his dealings with lobbyists.

Pre-Election Terrorizing

"The Bush administration is a past master at playing politics with terrorism, portraying critics of its various anti-terrorism initiatives as naive or even accusing them, in the words of former Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft, of giving 'ammunition to America's enemies,'" says the Los Angeles Times.

Democrats See Security as Key Issue for Fall

Seeking to counter White House efforts to turn the reported terrorist plot in Britain to Republican advantage, Democrats are using the arrests of the suspects to try to show Americans how the war in Iraq has fueled Islamic radicalism and distracted Mr. Bush and the Republican Congress from shoring up security at home. They say they intend to drive that message home as the nation observes the coming anniversaries of Hurricane Katrina and the September 11 attacks.

Bush administration makes new enemies daily

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

08/14/06

Jamaat ud Dawa is the perfect example of the type of local and regional insurgent group the United States government continues to add to the U.S. terrorism list in the name of the 'global war on terror.' Yet, because these groups don't start out with an anti-U.S. focus, the U.S. government is endangering its own citizens by making new enemies needlessly. The United States cannot and should not -- for the security of its own people -- help every government put down threats from local insurgents and terrorists. India and Pakistan do need to solve the Kashmir problem, and the United States might even be able to help mediate a settlement, since it now has a loose alliance with both nations. But labeling Kashmiri groups as 'terrorists' does nothing for any future U.S. role as an honest broker in the dispute...

As government increases in quantity, our lives decrease in quality

Complacency: Enemy of the state

America's Future Foundation
by Michael Brendan Dougherty

'As government increases in quantity, our lives decrease in quality.' That is the thesis of Joel Miller's Size Matters, a book which received too little attention at its release earlier this year and which is perfect reading at a time when our nation's legislators are off Capitol Hill. Size Matters is the most compact and elegant case for libertarian deregulation in the past decade. Regulators and bureaucrats should do everything they can to keep this intellectual product out of the hands of impressionable children -- otherwise they may face unemployment...

The wrong of "rights"

Frontiers of Freedom
by R. E. Smith, Jr.

08/14/06

It's disturbing to read comments from Americans who display pathetic misunderstanding, ignorance and disregard for the meaning of 'rights.' Claims of 'rights' by various groups and their supporters reflect wants and often illegitimate demands they expect government to impose, rather than the individual rights divinely bestowed as envisioned by our Founders. As Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1775, 'The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for ...' They are etched in our 'human nature, by the hand of divinity itself ...'

Voters beware GOP terrorism trap

Fox News
by Susan Estrich

08/13/06

This is not about the war in Iraq. It has nothing to do with Joe Lieberman. This is the Republican trap. Don't fall in. 'They have tried to keep it together -- they have to make it one in people's minds in order to cover the strategic error of Iraq,' says James Webb, Democratic Senate candidate from Virginia, and former member of the Reagan administration. From the very beginning, the Republican slip of hand has been to convince people that the war in Iraq was the answer to 9/11. It wasn't. It isn't. It never was. It isn't the answer to British hijackers either. This really has nothing to do with the war in Iraq. It needs to be said over and over...

Here we go again

The American Prospect
by Robert Kuttner

Dick Cheney was certainly farsighted when he declared Wednesday that Ned Lamont's victory over Joe Lieberman would comfort 'Al Qaeda types.' Voila! Only a day later, Al Qaeda was revealed as plotting to bring down 10 planes! I thought that was a nice parody line -- until I picked up yesterday's Wall Street Journal. There, editorial page writer Daniel Henninger, in a column headed, 'Democrats Knifed Lieberman on Eve of Airliner Plot,' goes beyond parody. Henninger writes, '[G]etting on a U.S. airliner, who would you rather have in the Senate formulating policy towards this threat -- Ned Lamont or Joe Lieberman?' We will face this story line between now and the November election, and beyond: As the terror threat rises, you can't trust critics of the Bush administration to keep America safe...

Mast rejected in 'Lady Hamilton's garden'

It was the spot where Lady Emma Hamilton is said to have watched for the mast that meant Britain's greatest hero had come home.

But more than 200 years later mobile phone bosses have had their plans turned down for planting a mast of a very different kind in the former garden of Lord Nelson's lover.

Campaigners breathed a sigh of relief when planners rejected O2's bid for a 50ft tower next to Town Quay House, Fareham, where Nelson and Lady Hamilton are rumoured to have met up for romantic encounters.

Councillors decided the tower would have a 'detrimental effect' on the Grade II listed building in Gosport Road, which dates from 1720, with porch columns made of masts from ancient ships.

Eighteen neighbours objected to the mast, including Paul Holland, who has spent tens of thousands of pounds restoring the building.

He said: 'We're delighted. You always expect the mobile phone operators to exercise their clout and get their way.

'I'm sure they'll be back and we'll do battle again, but they should really look at finding somewhere more appropriate.

Cllr Roger Price said: 'We must make sure all our listed buildings are cared for and looked after and not do anything as an authority that doesn't let that happen.'

O2 has said it will appeal against the decision and was determined to install the pole.

For GOP, Bad Gets Worse in Northeast

When it comes to President Bush and the Republican Congress, Rep. Jim Gerlach says voters in his suburban Philadelphia district are in a "sour mood." That's why when it comes to his reelection, the two-term incumbent says "the name of the game" is to convince those same voters that he can be independent of his own party. The Iraq war and Bush's low approval ratings have created trouble for Republicans in all regions. But nowhere is the GOP brand more scuffed than in the Northeast, where this year's circumstances are combining with long-term trends to endanger numerous incumbents.

Bush Pushes Congress to Make Conspiracy a War Crime

Salim Ahmed Hamdan never planted a bomb, never took a hostage, never fired a weapon in anger, and never planned an attack of any kind. What he is alleged to have done, according to his US military commission charge sheet, is work as Osama bin Laden's driver in Afghanistan. So how could military prosecutors at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, charge him with being a terrorist and war criminal? The answer boils down to a single word: conspiracy. The same legal approach that helped put mafia dons, capos, and associates behind bars in America is at the center of US military efforts to prosecute suspected al Qaeda members for war crimes.

In 2006 alone, Canadian fishermen killed 330,000 baby seals for their fur, a shocking number of whom were still alive and able to feel pain. But informed consumers can fight the hunt by calling on designers to stop using seal fur and by demonstrating their disapproval by boycotting Canadian seafood.

The Design Against Fur contest is just one more way we're continuing to pressure the Canadian government to end the hunt.

MOBILE PHONE MAST GOING UP AT PUB

NEIGHBOURS have given a mixed response to plans for a 12.5 metre mobile phone mast at the Golden Eagle pub in Haywards Heath.

The proposed G2 mast by telecommunications company O2 does not require planning permission because it is covered under permitted development at the site in America Lane.

Planners expect the mast, which is to be disguised as a flag pole, to be built in the next four to five months.

Residents have greeted the plans with a mixture of fear for the health implications on the local area and tolerance. Deputy Manager of Martin's in America Lane, Jo Bowen, said she was not happy about the impact the mast may have on children.

She said: "I would be a hypocrite to say I was concerned about the health effects on me because I have a mobile phone but it's an estate full of children and radiation is a concern.

"In this area there are a lot of young children hanging around down at the green and at the football club."

Manager of Sawyers Health Club Julian Drage was surprised neighbours had not been notified in advance. He said: "We were a little surprised we weren't notified the mast was going up in the general area. We would have liked to have been informed so we could have considered the possible health implications on our customers."

O2 have said the new G2 mast is necessary to improve general network coverage and to cater for a predicted growth in population in the area over the next few years.

A Boston road resident, who did not wish to be named, supported the move. She said: "I've got no problems. Everyone uses mobile phones. There's no written evidence that it causes cancer. I'm happy to live within close proximity to it as long as it's disguised."

http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

Spokesperson for O2 James Stevenson said he expected there to be more communication with residents over the next few weeks.

He said: "We've got permission but we're going to talk to the residents before we put it up.

"We're going to tell them what we're proposing and put it forward to them. We want to explain ourselves a bit better than we have of late. We've written to some people and we will talk to them. If they want, we will have an all day session. It may be somebody will suggest a better location."

Yesterday, British authorities broke up an alleged terror plot to blow up as many as ten commercial airliners as they flew to the United States. In response, the Department of Homeland Security upped the alert level on commercial flights from Britain to 'red' and boosted the alert to 'orange' for all other flights. In a completely unscientific poll, AOL asked subscribers: 'Are you changing your travel plans because of the raised threat level?' At mid-afternoon about a quarter of the respondents had said yes. Such polls do reflect the kinds of anxieties terrorist attacks, even those that have been stymied, provoke in the public. But how afraid should Americans be of terrorist attacks? Bush's belief in a worldwide Islamist conspiracy is foolish and dangerous. George Bush sometimes sounds more like the Mahdi, preaching jihad against infidels, than the leader of a western democracy. In his regular radio address to the American people on Saturday he linked the British alleged aircraft plotters with Hizbullah in Lebanon, and these in turn with the insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. All, said the president of the world's most powerful nation, share a 'totalitarian ideology,' and a desire to 'establish a safe haven from which to attack free nations.' "Pro-war, you get the door"

The Weekly Standard
by Matthew Continetti

It was left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore who most dramatically summarized the feelings of the antiwar left about their new champion, the multimillionaire father of three from Greenwich, Connecticut. 'Let the resounding defeat of Senator Joe Lieberman send a cold shiver down the spine of every Democrat who supported the invasion of Iraq,' Moore wrote in an open letter, 'and who continues to support, in any way, this senseless, immoral, unwinnable war.' This was a sentiment echoed, albeit more succinctly, by the blogger 'Dadhusker,' commenting on Firedoglake: 'Pro-war, You get the door!' Sometimes the simplest explanation is best. Senator Dodd was right when he told reporters at the 'unity' event in Hartford that the previous night's primary was 'about the people we seek to represent,' and that politicians 'have an obligation to the voters of the state' to represent them as fully as possible. Simply put, the voters in Connecticut are antiwar... (for publication 08/21/06)

Bush's political survival depends on terror

AlterNet

08/14/06

An evil symbiosis does exist between Muslim terrorists and American politicians, but it is not the one Republicans describe. The jihadists need George W. Bush to sustain their cause. His bloody crusade in the Middle East bolsters their accusation that America is out to destroy Islam. The president has unwittingly made himself the lead recruiter of willing young martyrs. More to the point, it is equally true that Bush desperately needs the terrorists. They are his last frail hope for political survival. They divert public attention, at least momentarily, from his disastrous war in Iraq and his shameful abuses of the Constitution. The 'news' of terror -- whether real or fantasized -- reduces American politics to its most primitive impulses, the realm of fear-and-smear where George Bush is at his best. So, once again in the run-up to a national election, we are visited with alarming news...

Siehe dazu:

GLOBAL WARMING REAL THREAT TO CALIFORNIA

By Bruce Lieberman San Diego Union-Tribune August 12, 2006

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20060812-9999-7m12warm.html

Increasing temperatures will transform California, threatening some of its most valuable resources in coming decades.

That's the primary message of a new state publication that summarizes 17 scientific studies examining how global warming is expected to play out in California.

³The potential impacts of global warming are unmistakable, adding more days of deadly heat, more intense and frequent wildfires, shorter supplies of drinking water and serious public-health risks,² Linda Adams, the state's secretary for environmental protection, said yesterday during a news conference at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.

By publishing the report, titled ³Our Changing Climate: Assessing the Risks to California http://www.climatechange.ca.gov/biennial_reports/2006report/ , state officials hope to engage citizens who haven't followed the steady stream of reports ordered last year by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger when he called for statewide reductions in the emission of greenhouse gases.

Worldwide, scientists agree that Earth's atmosphere and oceans are warming and that human use of fossil fuels for energy is driving the trend. Levels of carbon dioxide -- a byproduct of burning gas, oil and coal -- are now higher than they've been for at least 650,000 years, scientists have reported.

One global change that will affect California's coastline is rising sea levels. Over the 20th century, sea levels rose about 7 inches due to warming. Depending on how much more carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere during the next several decades, sea levels could rise as much as 28 inches more.

Sea levels that high could devastate San Diego County's coastline, particularly during high tides and El Niño storms.

Warming in California also is melting mountain snow -- the state's primary source of drinking water -- earlier in the spring. That means less snow melt will be available later in the year, during the state's hot, dry summer and fall seasons.

Other results of global warming could be more frequent and intense heat waves, as well as bigger and longer-lasting wildfires.

³Climate change is an issue we all need to be educated about,² said Mike Chrisman, California's secretary for resources. ³We've got to do a better job of educating. It's a long-term effort, (and) we've got to get people talking about it.²

Dan Cayan, a climate scientist at Scripps, said the general public is beginning to recognize the specter of rising temperatures.

Last month's heat wave across the nation, Europe's deadly heat wave of 2003, melting glaciers in Greenland and other events have contributed to a growing realization that a warming climate is changing the globe.

³I think people have, in a sense, a mental scoreboard, and they're seeing these factors accumulate,² Cayan said. ³I really believe that this is becoming an issue that is starting to get taken more seriously.²

The Scripps news conference followed one held in Riverside, where state officials highlighted the connection between warming temperatures and the risk of wildfires in California.

More meetings around the state are planned.

FDA Poised to Change The Health & Well Being of All Americans

by Byron J. Richards, CCN

The FDA is now poised to dramatically change the health and well being of all Americans. Unfortunately, they are headed in the wrong directionstraight over a cliff. The FDA is supposed to make sure drugs are safe and effective; they are mandated to protect the public. However, the top two positions at the FDA are now headed by Big Pharma representatives. The Bush-appointed new FDA leadership is intent on removing any brakes being applied to the drug approval process.....
