auf dem letzten Winter-Festival hat sich Tollwood erstmals mit mehreren Veranstaltungen zum Thema "Mobilfunk" zu Wort gemeldet. Von der überaus großen Resonanz waren wir selbst positiv überrascht.

Wir wollen weiterhin zur Information der Öffentlichkeit über das Thema Mobilfunk beitragen und durch kritische Auseinandersetzung einen bewussten Umgang mit der Mobilkommunikation fördern. Die Imker schlagen Alarm, denn die Bienenvölker sterben. Daran sei nicht etwa die berüchtigte Varroa-Milbe schuld, sondern der massive Einsatz von Chemikalien. Die Situation würde durch die Gentechnik noch erheblich verschärft.

Er ist der Herr der Bienen: Manfred Hederer, Präsident des Deutschen Berufs- und Erwerbsimkerbundes. Er kämpft für seine verbliebenen Völker. Nur noch 700.000 leben in Deutschland. Vor 100 Jahren waren es 2,8 Millionen. Wie immer lässt sich nicht nur eine Ursache für das gewaltige Sterben ausmachen. Zum einen sind - wie so oft - die Verbraucher nicht ganz unschuldig. Sie kaufen lieber den billigeren Importhonig. Die Imkerei ist also eine brotlose Kunst geworden.

Folgen der Landwirtschaft Zum anderen ist die industrialisierte Landwirtschaft zum größten Feind der Bienen geworden. Rücksichtslose Ertragsoptimierung heißt deren Parole. So werden unzählige Insekten regelmäßig von riesigen Erntemaschinen zerhäkselt. Viel schlimmer ist allerdings der Großeinsatz von Giften. Mehr als 39.000 Tonnen Pflanzenschutzmittel werden pro Jahr auf den Äckern versprüht. Die Langzeitfolgen sind bisher nicht bekannt.

Bienenexperten warnen schon länger vor allem vor dem Pestizid Imidacloprid, das 2004 in Frankreich verboten wurde, nachdem das dortige Völkersterben auf das Gift zurückgeführt werden konnte. In Deutschland wird das Präparat aber noch immer im Raps-, Zuckerrüben- Obst-, Gemüse- und Maisanbau eingesetzt.

Gentechnik auf dem Vormarsch Neben den belastenden Chemikalien droht den Bienen noch weiteres Ungemach: Zunehmend werden gentechnisch veränderte Pflanzen angebaut. Bisher gibt es in Deutschland zwar "nur" Gen-Mais und den auf einer Fläche von 34 Hektar. Das Anbaugebiet soll aber schon in diesem Jahr auf knapp 2000 Hektar vergrößert werden.

Wie sich die Gen-Pflanzen auf die Gesundheit der Bienen auswirken wird, ist noch völlig offen. Sehr deutlich zeichnen sich aber schon jetzt die wirtschaftlichen und juristischen Probleme für die Imker ab. Zum einen müssen sie nachweisen, dass ihr Honig frei von Gen-Pollen ist. Diese Analysen müssen bezahlt werden.

Schwierige Haftungsfragen Zum anderen kommen sie in Schwierigkeiten, wenn es um Haftungsfragen geht. Die Bienen können die Gen-Pollen auf gentechnikfreie Felder übertragen und die Saat verunreinigen. Da wird die Standortfrage der Imkerei zum Kernproblem. Ein Durchschnittsimker deckt mit seinen Völkern zwischen 30 und 70 Quadratkilometer ab.

Und das ist eigentlich ein Segen für alle. Denn die fleißigen Bienen werden dringend als Bestäuber gebraucht. Summen sie nicht mehr durch die Felder und Wissen, gibt es keinen Ertrag. Die Folgen treffen dann auch die Bauern. Sie müssen empfindlichen Einbußen hinnehmen - und letzten Endes werden auch die Verbraucher das zu spüren bekommen.

Gentechnik verantwortlich für Bienensterben?

Offener Online-Brief an die deutschen Bundestagsabgeordneten zum "rätselhaften" Bienensterben

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Wie die Süddeutsche Zeitung am 12.03.2007 berichtete, leiden amerikanische Imker unter einem "rätselhaften" Bienensterben. Nicht etwa, dass die Bienen im Stock verenden, was ja auch in der Vergangenheit verschiedentlich geschehen ist. Nein, die Bienen sind weg und haben die Brut alleine gelassen. als Ergebnis verhungern die Larven, obwohl Honig im Stock ist. Es fehlen die Arbeiterinnen, die sie füttern.

Eine zweite Meldung hat in dieser Woche Schlagzeilen in der Presse gemacht. Testfütterungen mit Ratten durch MON863, eine für die Tierfütterung und den menschlichen Verzehr zugelassene genmanipulierte Maissorte, hat alarmierende Ergebnisse ergeben.

Die Forschergruppe CRIIGEN (Commitee for Independent Research and Genetic Engineering) stellte fest, dass es nach Fütterungsversuchen mit Ratten zu Leber- und Nierenschädigungen sowie Gewichtsveränderungen der Tiere gekommen war. Der in Kanada und den USA produzierte Genmais ist allerdings schon seit 2006 in der EU für den Import zugelassen.

Sicherlich fragen Sie sich nun, wo denn der Zusammenhang besteht. Das eben soll mein Denkanstoß sein. In den USA und in Kanada wird Mais, Soja und Raps auf über 70% (Kanada) bzw. über 80% (USA) der Anbauflächen mit genmanipuliertem Saatgut bepflanzt.

Diese Ausweitung genmanipulierter Anpflanzungen erreichen die Hersteller, in vorderster Front Monsanto, durch millionenschwere Klagen wegen Patentrechtsverletzung, wenn Felder, auf welche Art auch immer, mit genmanipuliertem Saatgut kontaminiert wurden.

Die meisten der Betroffenen hatten nicht das Geld, sich gegen diese Giganten entsprechend zu wehren und haben Schadenersatzforderungen der Genindustrie abgewendet, indem sie dann Saatgut der Gen-Konzerne abnahmen, hauptsächlich von Monsanto.

Die Gen-Konzerne sind wie Spinnen. Ist man einmal in ihrem Netz, kommt man nicht mehr frei, denn die Justiz in den USA und in Kanada, obwohl weit unabhängiger von der Politik als die deutsche Justiz, urteilt fast immer zugunsten der Konzerne.

Was den Saatgut-Lieferungen von Monsanto allerdings fehlt, ist ein Beipackzettel, wie in der Medizin üblich, mit den Hinweisen über Risiken und Nebenwirkungen. Woher sollten die Informationen auch stammen?

Risiko-Forschung betreiben die Gen-Konzerne nicht. Im Gegenteil: Werden Nebenwirkungen festgestellt, werden sie verheimlicht.

Da die mit den Zulassungskriterien befassten "Experten" fast ausnahmslos mit der Genindustrie zusammenarbeiten, werden die Unbedenklichkeitsbescheide für genmanipuliertes Saatgut ohne Weiteres ausgestellt. Das gilt auch für die EU, wo für die Zulassung eine Testphase von 28 Tagen vorgesehen ist.

Der FDP scheinen die laxen Handhabungen im Zusammenhang mit der Gentechnik noch zu streng zu sein, wie der Entwurf zur Änderung des Gentechnik-Gesetzes (16/4143) beweist.

Kommen wir zurück zum Bienensterben! Dieses bisher nie beobachtete Phänomen ist mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit darauf zurückzuführen, dass die eingepflanzten synthetischen Toxide im Saatgut, die ja erst in der Pflanze ihre Wirkung erzielen sollen, als Nebenwirkung auch die Bienenvölker töten. Dabei können die von den genmanipulierten Pflanzen neu entwickelten und unerforschten Eiweiße eine große Rolle spielen.

Da amerikanische Imker die aus Mais gewonnene Fruktose für die Winterfütterung der Bienen verwenden, erhalten die Bienen auf diesem Wege Gifte und fremde Eiweiße aus genmanipuliertem Mais. Das geschieht auch, wenn Maispflanzen nicht zu den von ihnen aufgesuchten Blüten gehören, Raps hingegen schon. Vergleichen Sie den Artikel der englischen Wikipedia.

Sie haben Recht, wenn Sie nun sagen, die Verursachung des Bienensterbens durch genmanipulierte Pflanzen sei nicht bewiesen. Da Monsanto in den USA sehr großen Einfluss hat, wird Monsanto entsprechende Beweise auf Jahre hinaus - wenn nicht sogar ganz - verhindern.

Hier in Deutschland hat Herr Seehofer ja erst Ende letzten Jahres den Anbau von MON810 zugelassen, obwohl über 70% der Deutschen keinen Anbau von Gentechnik wollen. Aber Mehrheitsverhältnisse in der Meinung der Bevölkerung spielen in diesem Land ja keine Rolle. Wie die Abstimmung über die Entsendung der Tornados beweist, obwohl sie verfassungs- und völkerrechtswidrig ist.

Herr Wiefelspütz hat als Antwort auf ein Schreiben zum Einsatz der Tornados die durchschnittliche Auffassung der Abgeordneten treffend charakterisiert, als er u.a. schrieb:

"Ich vertrete Sie gerne und mit Leidenschaft im Deutschen Bundestag. Ich handele dort aber nach meiner Überzeugung und nach meinem Gewissen, nicht nach Ihrer Überzeugung und nicht nach Ihrem Gewissen und schon gar nicht nach Meinungsumfragen."

Hier kann ich nur anmerken, dass der erste Satz unter dieser Prämisse schlichtweg eine faustdicke Lüge ist, denn Herr Wiefelspütz vertritt eben nicht seine Wähler, sondern, wie er ja offen zugibt, ausschließlich seine eigenen Interessen und Überzeugungen.

Und dieser Umstand ist wohl auf die meisten Abgeordneten anwendbar. Wenn ich das hier erwähne, dann mit gutem Grund. Die Auswirkungen des Bienensterbens, aber auch die krankmachende Wirkung von MON863, betreffen eben nicht nur die Wähler, sondern auch Sie ganz persönlich.

Wenn die Bienen sterben, werden zahlreiche Nutzpflanzen, wie in der Sueddeutschen beschrieben, nicht mehr bestäubt und damit die Ernte von zahlreichen Früchten und Gemüsen verhindert. Wie schreibt die Sueddeutsche:

"Die Menschen brauchen die Bienen dringend, denn etwa ein Drittel der menschlichen Nahrung ist direkt oder indirekt von ihnen abhängig: Äpfel, Birnen, Pflaumen, ein Großteil des Obstes werden zwischen 80 und 90 Prozent von Zuchtbienen bestäubt, ebenso Mandelbäume, Melonen, Paprika, Kürbisse, Himbeeren und etwa 90 andere Obst- und Gemüse-Arten - aber auch Viehfutter wie Klee oder das in den USA verbreitete Alfalfa."

Nun mag es ja sein, dass in der Bevölkerungspolitik der westlichen Nationen inzwischen das Strategie-Papier von Henry Kissinger NSSM200 eine dominierende Rolle spielt. Bei Greenpeace kann man in diesem Zusammenhang über Monsanto lesen:

Monsanto kam zu einer Unternehmensberatung und wurde gefragt, wo der Konzern in 20 Jahren stehen soll. Monsantos Antwort: "Wir wollen die weltweite Nahrungsversorgung kontrollieren". Quelle: Kirk Azevedo, ehemaliger Monsanto Mitarbeiter.

Und: Auf einer Monsanto-Fortbildungsveranstaltung fragte ein Bio-Bauer, wer ihm bei Verunreinigung seiner Ernte durch Pollenflug den Schaden ersetzt. Der Monsanto-Vertreter antwortete: "In ein paar Jahren werden Bio-Bauern dafür haften, wenn sie mit ihren natürlichen Genen unsere Patent-Sorten verderben." (Quelle: Greenpeace Magazin 1.07 S.69)

Nun mag es ja durchaus in politischem Interesse sein, dass durch die Kontrolle über die Nahrungsmittel eine Dezimierung der Weltbevölkerung angestrebt wird, weil ein ständiges Ansteigen der menschlichen Population weniger ein Problem der Versorgung mit Nahrungsmitteln als ein Problem des steigenden Ressourcen-Verbrauchs bedeutet. Aber wenn durch unangenehme Nebenwirkungen von Genprodukten eine Vielzahl von Nutzpflanzen nicht mehr bestäubt wird und damit keine Früchte mehr trägt, werden diese Auswirkungen keine Rücksicht auf den Kontostand der Menschen nehmen. Anders gesagt: Auch Sie werden dann betroffen sein.

Sicherlich kommt nun bei einigen von Ihnen die Idee auf, dass man die Arbeit der Bienen ersatzweise auch durch Ein-Euro-Jobber erledigen lassen könnte, mit phantastischen Auswirkungen auf die Arbeitslosen-Statistik. Aber diesen Gedanken sollten Sie sich abschminken!

Der Mensch kann nicht einmal ein Zehntel der Arbeit leisten, die diese Insekten vollbringen. Von deren Fleiß sind wir viel abhängiger, als wir glauben.

Wenn Herr Seehofer oder die FDP Sie also zur nächsten Abstimmung über Erleichterungen beim Gen-Anbau aufrufen, sollten Sie ihren Egoismus zu Rate ziehen. Denn der wird Ihnen sicher raten, mit Nein zu stimmen.

Bedenken Sie dabei, dass Monsanto eine ziemlich schmutzige Geschichte hat. Jahrzehntelang leugnete der Konzern die Gefahren von PCB, Dioxin und Agent Orange. An den Folgen des Entlaubungsmittels Agent Orange leiden in Vietnam noch heute viele Menschen.

Die gerne verwendete Taktik "Weitermachen, bis die Schädlichkeit nicht mehr geleugnet werden kann", ist bei Genmanipulation erheblich gefährlicher als bei Mitteln wie z. B. Contergan. Einmal ausgebracht, kann man es nicht mehr rückgängig machen.

Genmanipulation ist eine Einbahnstraße, die nur ohne Bremse und mit steigender Geschwindigkeit gefahren werden kann. Was, wenn am Ende eine undurchdringliche Mauer steht?

Ich empfehle Ihnen als Lektüre die themenbezogene Seite von Greenpeace. Dort können Sie ein wenig über die vielen bereits bekannten Pannen bei der Gentechnik nachlesen. Sie sollten die dort beschriebenen Nach- und Nebenwirkungen wirklich ernst nehmen. Die mit der Gentechnik verbundenen Gefahren wirken schneller und effizienter, als es ein Klimawandel vermöchte.

Es gibt da einen Witz:

Zwei Planeten unterhalten sich. "Igitt", sagt der eine, "ich habe einen Homo-Sapiens-Befall." "Mach Dir deshalb keine Sorgen", sagt der andere. "Das erledigt sich von selbst!"

Wollen Sie mitverantwortlich sein, wenn dieser Witz harte Realität wird?

(28th Congressional District) and Charles Coleman, Jr. (28th Congressional) this morning started running a banner at the top of the Los Angeles Times daily news email to their web subscribers, calling on others to join them in standing up for impeachment now.

What these brave candidates are doing is not just promoting names to vote for, they are promoting an ISSUE, and mobilizing people around that issue in way that will have lasting positive movement value. We can do alerts to our own participants of course, but how much better is it to apply our energies to recruit OTHER people to their good sense, who were not already speaking out?

We are off to such a good start with this campaign, but we need to do so much more in the next 2 weeks. We need to help them to expand their presence in the Los Angeles market with targeted mailings. We need to get them on the local Air America affiliate as well, to accelerate the people's impeachment movement.

We can agree that the biggest problem the Democrats have is being perceived as not standing up for their own declared principles. Regardless of how corrupt and incompetent the Republicans show themselves to be (though that might alone result in seat gains), full advantage cannot be taken while Democratic incumbents fail to stand as a courageous minority. The only way to REALLY turn this around is by demonstrating that we are fighting for the people now, and not just waiting to get elected to do so.

If we can get enough attention for either of these first two members of the Impeach Team so that they win in their primaries against their "vote along with the war" opponents, it will send a powerful message to all other Democrats, incumbents and not, that the people are finally ready to demand policy change, and will turn out and vote for those who will stand strong. That is why they need every donation you can afford to give them.

Some fear that taking a strong stand for impeachment will hurt our chances in November. The opposite is in fact true. Your fellow constituents, and this crosses party lines, are just as appalled as you are with our current members of Congress and their continued failure to stand up for us. Strong candidates who are NOT afraid to speak the truth, and NOT afraid to stand up now help our chances in November. By supporting these candidates, we can inspire the turnout we need to overcome the expected pre-meditated election fraud.

Some fear that challenging the president will mobilize his base against us. What base? Less than 30% still cling to the vain belief that Bush and Cheney are either competent or truthful. Instead, we will rally our own base in a way that is not otherwise possible, and it will be the other side who sits out the election in disgust with the neocon nightmare we have for an Administration.

Some fear that any replacement for either Bush or Cheney might be equally as bad. All we know is wherever the people's impeachment movement takes us we must go there. Only if the voice of the people is strong can we stop the slide into the unitary dictatorship being exercised now. At the very least we will be able to chasten their successors.

What we are asking is that everyone who reads this should contribute at least ten dollars to help these brave candidates run their "call to action" ads. They want to run ads on Air America, not just in Los Angeles, but nationally to build the people's impeachment movement. They want to run ads in the L.A. Times so that the impeachment movement has real visibility. If each and every one of you can just contribute what you can now, this could be a real tipping point.

If you can contribute more, what a blessing that would be. There are many for whom $25, $50 or $100 is something they could comfortably do. We have spent two years complaining about the incumbents we have now, watching as they have failed us again and again. Now we have the chance to actually DO something about it. What we are asking is that even if you respond to no other appeal this year, THIS is the one that counts. THIS is the one that could mean the difference between being stuck with the same smug losers for what could be the last gasp of our great democracy, or replacing them NOW with candidates with the courage to take a stand for us.

This is your chance America. This is your chance to be rid of Bush and his gang of cronies forever. They remain in power only because they have conned you out of your own democracy. They remain in power only because we have not yet all spoken out at one time, all at the same time, to finally throw them out.

Look at what they have done to our country. Look at what it costs you every day extra just in the increase in gas prices caused entirely by their reckless destabilization of the Middle East, which they are determined to turn into an even wider conflagration. Look at all the money they have stolen from your own pocket to give lavish gifts to their most wealthy corporate cronies, in unlimited interest rates, propped up prescription drug prices, and paid for by the gutting of programs for the most needy.

Then, please think what it would be worth to you to remove our tormentors from office right now. And whatever that number is, make that donation today to build the impeachment movement which will make it happen.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

Where is the intelligence in a Senate Intelligence Committee that yesterday VOTED 12-4 for a military coup, a military takeover of the CIA? I was disappointed to read your article in the paper today; it saddens me as I along with many people have genuinely suffered as a result of living 100 metres from a phone mast for over seven years. If only I had the opportunity to know what I know now, I might not have gone on to develop breast cancer at the age of 38 and would have realised the years of sleep problems had been connected to exposure to microwave radiation.

Thankfully Powerwatch offer a much needed and honest service, the main advice given by Alasdair Philips is to use mobile phones for emergency use only. Dear Ben Goldacre,

I have been copied into some of the electronic communication that has been happening recently on the subject of electrical sensitivity.

My name is Jean Philips. I have been working with my husband Alasdair Philips for some 15 years, investigating the health effects attributed to the action of electromagnetic fields. We have a website http://www.powerwatch.org.uk and are affiliated to no government or industry. We are completely independent. I am also a trustee of Electrosensitivity-UK.

During this time I have become increasingly aware of the small, but significant number of people (about 3% of the population at a conservative estimate) who describe symptoms, which have been mentioned in other communications, which become worse in the presence of some EMF frequencies. They have been in contact with me through email, telephone or by letter.

There are a number of these who have other problems including psychiatric ones, probably a little greater than the percentage you would find in the population as a whole. I have about 10 years experience of working with people with psychiatric problems, and can usually recognise the overlap. I believe that the higher percentage is due to the fact that problems of recognition of, what to the sufferer is a very real problem, can lead to depression and anxiety, rather than these being the cause of the problem. I guess it is why they tend to turn to complementary practitioners who do not pass judgements as readily as many GPs.

The fact that some of these people are otherwise ill, does not rule out the fact that they may be electrically sensitive. By far the majority of people do not have any degree of psychiatric disorder, and are reacting to elecyromagnetic field exposure with physiological, neurological and cognitive changes that can make life incredibly difficult. There is a scale of sensitivity, and fortunately most people who have the symptoms are not at the extreme end.

This variation in severity can be a problem when studying the condition. EHS is not a clear-cut, yes you have it, no you don't sort of condition. Some people, like Gro Harlem Brundtland only react to mobile phone radiation, even if quite severely. She may be able to spend hours in front of a computer, remain unaffected by mobile phone mast radiation and be able to work under fluorescent lights all day without developing a headache.

EHS sufferers appear to react to different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, some to low frequency emissions (computers, fluorescent lights,etc.), some to high frequency (mobile phones, digital cordless phones, mobile phone masts, etc.) and some to both. Some will be slightly affected and others are unable to tolerate the sort of field levels that maybe you and I would tolerate happily for weeks on end. Sensitivity can develop suddenly, out of the blue, and can be initiated by non-EMFs, a common trigger being an unusual chemical reaction that results in chemical as well as electrical sensitivity.

I will be briefer, as you don't want a lecture, and this feels like it is becoming one.

Exposure levels in studies are difficult to standardise and will describe the people not sensitive to those frequencies or strengths that are being used, as not sensitive at all. People who are very sensitive cannot take part as they are too badly affected. I have spoken to many people who have had to drop out of the Rubin study and the ongoing Essex University study, because they were so ill after the first exposure they could not continue. There are other technical problems with many of the studies. Alasdair has advised on some and the protocols have been changed to correct the errors.

The study commissioned by the HPA which reported in 2005 (Definition, Epidemiology and Management of Electrical Sensitivity), included in section 4.5.5 that people with EHS when asked what helped reduce their symptoms on a rating scale of 1-6, where 6 was most effective, reported

4.5 - disconnecting electricity
4.3 - removing indoor source
4.2 - avoiding exposure.

This seems to be worth investigating further. Why does this work so well, if there is no involvement of EMFs? It is a question that needs looking into, as the other factors listed were not as effective at reducing symptoms.

It is difficult to curb personal passion at times, when you hear as I do, and others who represent people with EHS, many of whom are too ill to represent themselves, do, about the dreadful suffering that many people endure, made worse by disbelief and sometimes ridicule. It did not help the sufferers of ME and Gulf War Syndrome to be told it was all in the mind.

I am happy to speak to you further should you wish to do so.

you suggest people to ask to be radiated by masts all night - very interesting. You ignore the difference between masts and phones: people don't talk on the phone all night, but masts radiate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and one cannot control it. In contrast, one can turn off the mobile phone- How is that for a "sober analysis of the data"? If you think mobile phones power is a negative thing - then why don't you just suggest people to limit their exopsure time to the phone instead of inviting a private antenna near their house? The answer may be in your sentence "critiques of character and finance are a poor substitute for a sober analysis of the data." The evidence based fact is that you did not disclose to the readers whether you are you paid by the companies. I suspect you used this argument as a red herring for not dealing with the real data (see below - the actual studies on masts) BECAUSE you have something to hide. Otherwise why don't you just simply and honestly reveal to the readers: are you paid by the industry or not?

I will invite a private antenna after you do that in reality, not by spreading irresponsible words on the paper.

BTW did you check with Alasdair Philips' COM device, how much your phone emits? I am sure you will change your tone after you do that.

It is really shocking how Mr Goldacre is so happy to denigrate what Powerwatch are saying by implying that they are trying to persuade people to buy their products by scaring people!

Why is it acceptable to believe what the phone industry and government are saying when they stand to benefit in billions of pounds of profit from the industry?

Why belittle an individual who has to earn his money for his research somehow and can't get any from the industry or government as they don't like what he is saying?

I am very pleased that Powerwatch are providing us with some true information as to the science of the dangers of microwave radiation on living beings. It is the government and industry who are not to be trusted.

What would happen if there were a problem? Can you really see the government or industry admitting it? What about the law suits? What about the profits? What about the billions the government have got from the phone industry, how would they give it back?

Open your eyes and look at the research, there is plenty of it but don't ask the government to give it to you, look for the real researchers , ask them. You are supposed to be a journalist after all.

What did the tobacco industry say 30 years ago?

I have a physics degree and the independent research makes perfect sense.

I have bought Powerwatch's products and managed to shield the radiation out of my Mothers flat.

She has suffered ever since she moved in 1999 from a host of illnesses and been on deaths door 3 times in the last 6 years.

Last year when I became aware of the effects of microwave radiation after doing some research on the subject I bought a radiation monitor and took it to her house and found it full of radiation (below the guidelines as it always is).

All my mother's symptoms fitted with what doctors in Germany are describing.

She has had a blood test in Germany and a hair analysis and radiation damage is confirmed.

You can't say it is psychological since we did not know of these effects until one year ago after she was already very ill. We also didn't know there was a phone mast near her flat as it is on a rooftop and 500m away from her flat so we didn't notice it.

Since we have shielded her flat my mother is improving. She is 79 so conventional wisdom would not expect her to regain her energy!

Last year she was so fatigued that she could only get up 1 day in 7. Now she is out late at night with her friends. Her auto-immune lung disease has stabilised, her immune system is strengthened, her appetite has come back, the pains in her head gone and her sleep returned to normal.

If you stubbenly refuse to repeat in your paper anything but the industry/government view then you can't be surprised if people assume you are an industry spokesman. There are may people out there who know a lot more about the subject than you do. You won't even publish any letters like mine in the paper. I wonder why?

OK - maybe you are just trying to wind up everyone who is concerned about mobile phone masts into a frenzy - I want to tell you IT'S WORKED!!

I won't waste time and effort answering all of your extravagent statements, but suffice to say that one can choose whether to use the phone (low signal or high) - but one cannot choose to lose the mast (or turn it off) - it will be pulsing away 24/7 - just in case anyone wants to make the usual inane mindless calls we hear wherever we go.

I really wish you "science correspondents" would consult people (Powerwatch being one - HPA another) who know the facts and not just play to the gallery.

Vice President Dick Cheney's keynote address at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) policy conference March 7, 2006 is a telling example of neo-conservative global dominance thought in the current administration. Here are his exact words, "Israel, and the United States, and all civilized nations will win the war on terror. To prevail in this fight, we must understand the nature of the enemy. Šas America experienced on September 11th, 2001, the terrorist enemy is brutal and heartless. This enemy wears no uniform, has no regard for the rules of warfare, and is unconstrained by any standard of decency or morality. The terrorists want to end all American and Western influence in the Middle East. Their goal in that region is to seize control of a country, so they have a base from which to launch attacks and wage war against governments that do not meet their demandsŠ ultimately to establish a totalitarian empire that encompasses a region from Spain, across North Africa, through the Middle East and South Asia, all the way around to Indonesia."

Cheney claims that evil terrorists everywhere are plotting for the ruin of "civilized" nations. In order to stop them we must militarily control all the regions they are threatening in a permanent global war. Cheney's military empire, set to prevail over the totalitarian terrorists, will inevitably expand global resistance to US domination. Large coalitions of freedom fighters, fundamentalists, patriots, religious zealots, nationalists, and ideologues of various beliefs will emerge from within the regions the US occupies. Widespread resistance is exactly what is happening in Iraq.

Le Monde Diplomatique on May 2, 2006 described the Iraq insurgents - terrorists to Cheney - as "armed opposition often divided into a set of wholly independent categories which apparently do not have much in common. The categories include the patriotic former army officers, the foreign terrorists, the Sunni Arabs determined to regain power, the Muslims opposed to any kind of foreign occupation, the tribal factions pursuing their own specific vendettas, the die-hard Ba'athists - and the "pissed-off" Iraqis (in coalition soldier jargon, POIs) who are simply sick of the foreign forces occupying their country."

For Cheney and other global dominance neo-conservatives, the terrorist label is so broad that it can be applied to any individual, group, or nation that resists US military occupations, US threats, or US corporate interests anywhere in the world. In reality, the US military is the world's foremost totalitarian force.

Three years ago I met a Dutch journalist, Willem Oltman, at the International Campaign Against US Aggression on Iraq in Cairo, Egypt. Oltman described his teen years during World War II in the Dutch resistance movement. "The Nazi's called us terrorists," he exclaimed. "Now as the US invades and occupies other countries you do the same thing," he added.

Maintaining an US military global police force enriches defense contractors and enflames resistance. There is no worldwide terrorism threat other than the one we create when we make war on other peoples.

Addressing world poverty, sickness, and environmental issues will go much further in preventing single acts of terrorism inside the United States than any military actions we can muster. It is time to challenge the neo-conservative global dominance agenda and stand up for human rights and the traditional American values of grass-roots democracy, due process, governmental transparency, and individual freedoms for ourselves and the rest of the world.
