Familiar territory with a new slant

There are currently many books on the harm that is being done to our health and to our environment. Most of them cover much the same ground: chemicals, agribusiness, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and so on. This is no bad thing; every author manages to find some new information or put a new slant on things. There is also no shortage of new outrages coming to light, as regular readers of SiS will know.

In Sick Planet, Stan Cox covers a lot of familiar territory and highlights points that others have missed. His targets include disease mongering (the practice of convincing people that they are suffering from some ailment that requires a drug), the marketing of unnecessary food products such as bottled water, the pollution caused by overuse of fertilisers, the hazards of fluoropolymer chemicals such as Teflon, and more.

Because he has spent substantial time in India, he is able to describe some of what has been happening there. The dangers to health caused by the pharmaceutical industry in developed countries are given wide coverage in the popular media; but we are not told about the serious damage being done in the Patancheru area of India where so many of the worlds bulk drugs and intermediate compounds are made. There, sickness rates are more than double the national average, and good farmland is uncultivated because the groundwater has become unfit even for irrigation.

As Cox will convince you if you do not already know, much of what is happening to our planet is due to human ignorance and greed, expressed through the agency of big corporations and with the connivance of governments. Of course ignorance and greed are common human failings, and this might lead us to conclude that there is little we can do to save ourselves. Cox disagrees, and this makes him go beyond what most other writers on the subject have done.

Kenya has recently approved plans to destroy some 20,000 acres of the globally important and ecologically sensitive Tana Delta for sugar and biofuel production. Covering 130,000 hectares, these wetlands' diverse riverine vegetation -- forests, swamps, dunes, beaches and ocean -- will be forever altered by widespread vast fields of toxic, monoculture sugar cane and biofuel mill. The project threatens 350 species including birds, lions, hippos, nesting turtles, elephants, sharks, reptiles and the Tana red colobus, one of 25 primates facing extinction globally. Biofuel production worldwide continues to destroy crucial natural ecosystems required for local and global sustainability. While hailed as a climate change remedy, this destruction of natural habitats for biofuel production almost always releases more carbon than saved. Using food such as sugar for fuel has raised food prices, leading to riots globally, including in Kenya. Please respectfully request the project be permanently cancelled.

There are very few selflessly telling truth these days. Let me. Gaia, the Earth system and provider of humanity's habitat, is imploding and ecosystem loss and an inoperable atmosphere mean we are moving towards a horrific death for most if not all life. Yet, perhaps in the nick of time, there is a new breed of environmentalists imbued with a revolutionary spirit of action, speaking ecological truth, and willing and able to take sufficient action on behalf of Mother Earth. I speak not of revolutionary violence at the moment, but profound societal and personal transformation adequate to sustain being and ourselves.

The way many in the over-developed world live, and to which most of the rest aspire, is based upon numerous fundamental lies. Democratic consumption cannot provide all everyone wants forever (or even much longer). Industrial capitalism bent upon endless growth will allow itself to be reformed to steady- state sustainability or it will be destroyed -- by revolution or its own collapse on a lifeless planet. Working people have become slaves for the elites, and if things continue, will soon be crushed by ecosystem collapse while the rich continue to live well for a while longer.

Those that speak and act upon ecological truths are the antidote to global ecocide waged by fat cat financial speculators, industrialists and oil men. We are special. Our scope of life and love is larger. We are global citizens, and our family includes all species, and the Earth herself. Without the Earth there is nothing. Too numerous humans ravaging ecosystems like locusts are destroying all that is sacred -- water, air, land and oceans -- the requirements for all life. We know, care and feel, and are better people, the model for future humankind.

Ecological revolutionaries are smart and speak scientific and other truths. Those that do not believe in climate change or feel the Earth's pain are stupid and dull. We reject mainstream environmentalism -- where what is asked for is insufficient even if fully achieved -- for a revolutionary spirit of ever increasing pressure upon criminal Earth destroyers. First we ask, then we protest, then we obstruct and perhaps sabotage, and if and when every offer to embrace sustainability by the elite has been rejected, we must be willing to fight.

I Am Special, You Can Be Special Too

It is ok to be special. I am special by virtue of my embrace of Gaia and all her species and people as kin; and unique skills I have to see ecological wrongs, envision sustainability, and possess the smarts, dedication and skills to continuously organize awareness and solutions. There are thousands like me and together we are going to save the Earth. If we are to weather the times that are coming we had better overcome the tyranny of mediocrity and start recognizing genius and truth.

Herein I have often been frank with my human frailties. How myopic to think it is ego to now discuss what makes me and others like me special. Why are game athletes, play actors and screaming singers revered and viewed as being special and not political ecologists defending the Earth and all life? Being able to conceive and implement specific actions to promote ecological sustainability, allowing being to continue and averting disaster, is at least as cool as kicking a goal, pretending a part, or rocking out (and these are all way cool).

Perhaps my unique gift is to see and communicate the scale of the ecological problems facing the Earth, and absurd inadequacy of nearly every response. Too many people consuming recklessly with nary a thought to conservation and the future are eating ecosystems required to keep the Earth habitable. This and a dedication to sufficient solutions set this ecologist apart.

This gift is wielded at a price. To feel viscerally my oneness with the Earth, to know this is profound truth, yet to often be unable to personally communicate it without repelling others. So I write and organize information, and live a lonely life. It is damn hard to often be the only sane, fully ecologically aware one in the room (the Earth is dying, arghh!), even as I am condemned by the ignorant as strange and a bit scary. I have been shocked by withdrawals of love by family and friends because I am different. I refuse to change to get along.

How easy it is to confuse vision, passion, commitment and sacrifice for egoism. How saddened I am by the selfishness of modern hairless apes, dismayed at our detachment from ecosystems, and scared by the full apocalyptic implications of our ignorance. This is not messianic, it is prophetic, and we need more of the latter and much less of the former, as the only God is Gaia.

I am sick and tired of people saying there is nothing I and others can do for the Earth, that we cannot make a difference. It is as if society went straight from denying the problems to being unwilling to embrace transformative solutions because they require sacrifice and an end to wallowing competitive consumption. Yes we can re-learn how to live with the Earth, there is still just time to thrive and survive.

Ecological truth-tellers infused with a revolutionary spirit of action to save the Earth are the most special people around. We are the future hope for humanity and all being. We are going to stop coal, ancient forest logging, and implement numerous other transformative changes necessary to save the Earth and all her creatures.

After some time for rest and reflection, and having regained my health and semblance of peace of mind, I look forward to using all of my power of intellect and persuasion to advocate for a spirit of revolutionary action in response to the abysmal crises faced by the Earth and her humanity. I see no choice.

Time for a Earth Revolution to Save Being

Thoughtful, widespread consideration, enunciation and organization of a revolutionary strategy for global ecological social change are long overdue. The revolutionary spirit of which I speak must aspire to completely smash the growth machine devouring ecosystems we need to live, in order to usher in an era of global ecological restoration and sustainability. Nothing less will suffice. The only option remaining for survival of humans and Gaia is clearly to embrace profound, radical transformations in the way we live.

Revolutionary change means reducing our homes, driving, meat eating and other consumption; and re-localizing our economies and governance, returning to the Earth to grow organic gardens, and just generally living more simply yet fully. Nothing less will allow billions -- or those that survive the coming ecologically-mediated social collapse -- to live equitably, peacefully and sustainably for much longer.

Yet revolutionary change need not necessarily be violent. Within the Earth Revolution option there are many tactical choices of which revolutionary violence is but one last possibility, and is hopefully not needed, because peaceful persuasion is often effective. There are many ways for revolutionary "people power" to resist including mass protest, petitions, sabotage, sit-ins, strikes and boycotts. Various participants within an Earth Revolution will feel comfortable with, and embrace different tactics, and you are urged to select active means of resistance of your choice soon, taking full responsibility for doing so.

Given unprecedented threats to human well-being, the threat of revolutionary action cannot be taken off the table. If the ruling elite are so intransigent that they will not stop their violence against the Earth, workers and sister species, then they will have to be eliminated. Revolutionary war like all killing is always murder. Yet either that or we all die a miserable and terrifying death, leaving a ravaged Planet to regenerate or perhaps just slip away into nothingness.

I look forward to contemplating and discussing Earth Revolution strategies and tactics further, and have not and will not now condone any imminent illegal acts. Yet I remain committed to academically investigating how a revolutionary spirit, and commitment to sufficient ecological and social change to sustain the Earth, will come about one way or another.

Kurswechsel nicht in Sicht

Steigende Energiepreise und die Krise um Nahrungsmittel sind ebenso wie der Klimawandel Themen des derzeitigen G8-Gipfels in Japan. Dazu erklärt das Mitglied des Parteivorstandes Wolfgang Methling:

Die von Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel auf dem G8-Gipfel in Japan beabsichtigte Initiative gegen die Produktion von Biokraftstoffen ist kein wirksames Rezept gegen den Hunger in der Welt. Dafür ist verstärkte Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe unverzichtbar. Dies kann jedoch nur gelingen, wenn die G8-Staaten ihre Zusagen einhalten, die Entwicklungshilfe bis 2010 jährlich um 50 Milliarden zu erhöhen und die Armut in der Welt zu halbieren. Von den sogenannten Milleniumszielen sind die reichsten Staaten der Erde momentan weiter entfernt denn je. Die in verschiedenen Regionen der Erde auftretende Knappheit bzw. die rasant steigenden Preise von Nahrungsmitteln haben verschiedene Ursachen. Dazu gehört nur zum Teil auch der stärkere Anbau bzw. die stärkere Nutzung von Kulturpflanzen für die Erzeugung von Bioenergie. Eine größere Rolle spielt jedoch die auf erhöhte Nachfrage und Spekulation beruhende Preistreiberei. Notwendig ist jedoch eine kritische Bewertung der Energieeffizienz und Gesamtökobilanz der verschiedenen Vorhaben zur Erzeugung von Biokraftstoffen der ersten Generation (Biodiesel) und zweiten Generation (Sunfuel). Der Anbau und die energetische Nutzung von Pflanzen muss regional organisiert werden. Es darf nicht sein, dass die Industrieländer nicht nur fossile Energieträger (Erdöl, Erdgas, Kohle), sondern biogene Energieressourcen aus Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern abziehen. In punkto Atomenergie darf Deutschland sich von den anderen Staaten nicht in die Ecke stellen lassen. Atomenergie ist keine Ökoenergie. Längere Laufzeiten der Kraftwerke sichern vor allem höhere Gewinne für Energiekonzerne und bedeuten eine Belastung künftiger Generationen mit radioaktiven Abfällen. Notwendig ist ein Kurswechsel auf den Ausbau der Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien.

G8-Regierungschefs sprechen 2008 über das Jahr 2050

Nach monatelangem Ringen haben sich die acht führenden Industrienationen auf ein sehr langfristiges Ziel zum Klimaschutz verständigt. Sie wollen die Treibhausgase weltweit bis 2050 um mindestens 50 Prozent reduzieren, teilte Japans Ministerpräsident Yasuo Fukuda am Dienstag (8. Juli) auf dem G8-Gipfel in Toyako mit. Dies sei "Ziel und Orientierungspunkt", sagte er. Damit gehen die G8-Staaten nicht weit über die Vereinbarung des Gipfels von Heiligendamm von 2007 hinaus, wo vereinbart wurde, dass eine Halbierung des CO2-Ausstoßes "ernsthaft" geprüft werden sollte. Wie 2007 wird aber auch diesmal auf die UNO-Klimakonferenz 2009 in Kopenhagen verwiesen, wo endgültige Ergebnisse erwartet werden.

Chance für den Klimaschutz vertan

"Außer Spesen, nichts gewesen", so wertet das Mitglied des Parteivorstandes Wolfgang Methling die Ergebnisse des G8-Gipfels zum Klimaschutz. Er erklärt:

Erneut haben die Industrie- und Schwellenländer die Chance vertan, mehr für den Klimaschutz zu tun. Mehr als Postulate, schwammige Visionen und kaum umgesetzte Vereinbarungen auf dem Papier haben die G8-Staaten derzeit nicht zu bieten. Das Ziel, den CO2-Ausstoß zu halbieren wurde auf den Sankt Nimmerleinstag verschoben, ohne konkrete Zwischenschritte zu vereinbaren. Angesichts der Dramatik des Klimawandels fällt die bisherige Bilanz der Ergebnisse nach elf Jahren Kyoto-Protokoll bescheiden aus. Die Industrieländer haben ihre Treibhausgasemissionen kaum reduziert, der geringe Fortschritt ist zudem noch den mittel- und osteuropäischen Staaten zu verdanken. Die übrigen Industrieländer verbuchen sogar eine Steigerung der Emissionen. Obwohl Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel sich ständig als Vorkämpferin für den Klimaschutz darstellen möchte, ist es auch Deutschland nicht gelungen, zwingende Maßnahmen einzuleiten. Das Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz war ein richtiger Schritt, muss aber unbedingt ausgebaut werden. Wir brauchen neben dem Ausstieg aus der Kernenergie das Ende der Verbrennung fossiler Energieträger. Stattdessen werden Milliarden in den Bau neuer Steinkohlekraftwerke gesteckt und über die Wiederbelebung der Kernenergiegewinnung philosophiert. Sichere Energieversorgung aller Menschen zu sozialverträglichen Preisen ist ohne jede Einschränkung auch ohne Atomstrom möglich. Deshalb ist DIE LINKE für den generellen Vorrang von erneuerbaren Energien vor allen anderen Energieträgern. Das Beharren auf Kernenergie und Kohlekraftwerken verzögert den Ausbau erneuerbarer Energien. Vor der Drohkulisse steigender Energiepreise wird zum wiederholten Male versucht, den vereinbarten Atomausstieg aufzuweichen. Erneut macht sich die Union damit zum Sprachrohr der Energiegiganten. Längere Laufzeiten für AKW bringen weder Sicherheit in der Energieversorgung noch günstigere Preise für die Verbraucher. Längere Laufzeiten bedeuten Extraprofite für die Energiekonzerne und eine weitere Belastung der künftigen Generation mit radioaktiven Abfällen. Es ist im Interesse der Verbraucher, der Versorgungssicherheit der Bevölkerung und im Hinblick auf zu hohe Energiekosten notwendig, die Macht der Stromkonzerne zu begrenzen. Wir fordern die Bundesregierung und speziell die SPD auf, sich diesem Druck nicht zu beugen. Immer wiederkehrende Störfälle in AKW zeigen deutlich: Atomenergie ist nicht beherrschbar und der Ausstieg aus der Atomenergie keine nationale Angelegenheit. DIE LINKE wendet sich deshalb ebenso gegen den EU-subventionierten Bau von AKW ins Süd-Osteuropa.

UNEP-Chef Steiner enttäuscht vom G8-Gipfel - Merkel zufrieden

Der Chef des Umweltprogramms der Vereinten Nationen (UNEP), Achim Steiner, zeigt sich enttäuscht vom G8-Gipfel in Japan. Wenn die unverbindliche Klimaeinigung der führenden Industrienationen das "große Signal" sein solle, als das es jetzt hingestellt werde, dann sei das schon "ernüchternd", sagte Steiner am Mittwoch (9. Juli) im ARD-"Morgenmagazin". Er vermisse konkrete Zwischenziele, wie die klimaschädlichen Treibhausgase in nachvollziehbaren Schritten und Etappen beispielsweise bis 2020 reduziert werden können. Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel (CDU) war dagegen ganz zufrieden.
