BP keeps promises, Obama doesn’t

The president’s handling of the growing environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is going from bad to worse. Attorney General Eric Holder held a news conference during which he said: ‘We will ensure that every cent of taxpayer money will be repaid and damages to the environment and wildlife will be reimbursed. We will make certain that those responsible clean up the mess they have made and restore or replace the natural resources lost or injured in this tragedy’...

Behold our dark, magnificent horror

San Francisco Chronicle
by Mark Morford

06/04/10

There is, you have to admit, a sort of savage grace, a tragic and terrible beauty, to the BP oil spill. Like any good apocalyptic vision of self-wrought hell, the greatest environmental disaster in U.S. history has its inherent poetry. You see that creeping ooze of black, that ungodly wall of unstoppable darkness as it slowly, inexorably invades the relatively healthy, pristine waters adjacent, and you can’t help but appreciate the brutal majesty, the fantastic, reeking horror of this new manifestation of black death we have brought upon ourselves, as it spreads like a fast cancer into the liquid womb of Mother Nature herself...

The next Deepwater Horizon?

Mother Jones
by Kate Sheppard

06/04/10

Last week, President Barack Obama put new deepwater drilling operations on hold for another six months. With the Gulf of Mexico spill entering its fifth week, this move was meant to show that the administration is taking a more cautious approach to offshore drilling, after it had announced a vast expansion just weeks before the BP disaster. Many news accounts on the moratorium extension implied that all deepwater Gulf operations had been shut down. But that’s not the case. The administration is allowing deepwater drilling operations already in production in the Gulf to continue — including some that may pose a greater risk than the Deepwater Horizon. Exhibit A: BP’s other major Gulf operation, the Atlantis, which sits 124 miles off the Louisiana coast...

Crony capitalism strikes again

Nolan Chart
by Kenn Jacobine

06/06/10

The explosion of the BP oil rig on April 20 and the subsequent saturation of the Gulf of Mexico with oil will go down as the biggest environmental catastrophe of all time. We still don’t know what caused the initial blast that took the lives of eleven workers, but there is one important lesson we have learned from the incident. Crony capitalism is the culprit once again...

Reproductive Health Concerns in the Aftermath of the Gulf Oil Disaster

Lucinda Marshall, Truthout: "Imagine that you are a woman living on or near the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Perhaps, you are pregnant or hope to be soon. And, perhaps, your partner is one of the fishermen who has been helping to clean up from the BP oil disaster. He comes home at night coughing and barely able to breath and his skin is irritated from contact with the oil."

Which Horizon?

James Howard Kunstler, Truthout: "Did the nation heave a sigh of relief when BP announced that their latest gambit to 'cap' the Deepwater Horizon gusher will result in hosing up fifty percent of the leaking oil? If so, the nation may be sighing too soon since the other half of the oil will still collect in underwater plumes and hover all around the Gulf Coast like those baleful mother ships in the most recent generation of alien invasion movies. I shudder to imagine the tonnage of dead wildlife flotsam that will wash up with the tide for years to come. It will seem like a 'necklace of death' for several states, though even that may not be enough to distract them from the more gratifying raptures of Nascar and NFL football."

Exxon Valdez Lawyer: Louisianans, 'To Use A Legal Term,' Are 'Just F--ked'

By Sam Stein

Long after oil stops spilling from the Gulf and the ecological catastrophe caused by the spill begins to be cleaned up, the process of determining the extent to which BP owes the afflicted will be litigated in the courts.

Is America Ruled By Psychopaths?

By Prof John Kozy

Carefully watch what happens over the next twenty years as the government uses the law to shield BP, Transocean, and Halliburton while the claims of those affected by the spill disappear into the quicksand of the American legal system.
