Clinton's 'defense umbrella' has murky history

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton set off tremors in the Middle East this week when she said a nuclear Iran could be contained by a U.S. "defense umbrella" - an offhand remark that appears to have emerged from obscure Washington policy debates and her own presidential campaign rhetoric.

Too Big to Fail or Failing to Think Big?

America's Wars: How Serial War Became the American Way of Life

David Bromwich, TomDispatch.com: "We have begun to talk casually about our wars; and this should be surprising for several reasons. To begin with, in the history of the United States war has never been considered the normal state of things. For two centuries, Americans were taught to think war itself an aberration, and 'wars' in the plural could only have seemed doubly aberrant. Younger generations of Americans, however, are now being taught to expect no end of war -- and no end of wars."

Worst Case Scenario

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "The torture debate in America got real three weeks ago. Oh, the debate has been around for years now, of course, ever since the photos of what happened in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq came to light. Men covered in feces, bent double and lashed to bedframes, their faith humiliated by the menstrual blood smeared on their faces, their bodies savaged by dogs, and worse, reports of the rape of women and children."

Bundeswehr in der Sackgasse

22. Juli 2009

Making sense of Cheney’s madness

Consortium News
by Ivan Eland

07/21/09

The seeming irrationality behind the George W. Bush administration’s ‘against the grain’ (and the law) policies on torture, warrantless domestic surveillance, and now notification of Congress about CIA covert operations was not irrational at all. Most experts say that torture is counterproductive because the subject will tell the interrogator what he or she wants to hear to stop the pain and because many military people say that it merely revs up the opposition, gives them no incentive to surrender, and gives them every incentive to torture U.S. military personnel. Yet in the face of this mountain of authoritative opinion and the policy’s clear violation of international law and a U.S. criminal statute against torture, the Bush administration gleefully did it anyway...

Dismantling the temple

The Nation
by William Greider

07/15/09

The financial crisis has propelled the Federal Reserve into an excruciating political dilemma. The Fed is at the zenith of its influence, using its extraordinary powers to rescue the economy. Yet the extreme irregularity of its behavior is producing a legitimacy crisis for the central bank. The remote technocrats at the Fed who decide money and credit policy for the nation are deliberately opaque and little understood by most Americans. For the first time in generations, they are now threatened with popular rebellion. During the past year, the Fed has flooded the streets with money — distributing trillions of dollars to banks, financial markets and commercial interests — in an attempt to revive the credit system and get the economy growing again. As a result, the awesome authority of this cloistered institution is visible to many ordinary Americans for the first time. People and politicians are shocked and confused, and also angered, by what they see. They are beginning to ask some hard questions for which Federal Reserve governors do not have satisfactory answers...

Democrats irked by Obama signing statement

Associated Press

07/21/09

President Barack Obama has irked close allies in Congress by declaring he has the right to ignore legislation on constitutional grounds after having criticized George W. Bush for doing the same. Four senior House Democrats on Tuesday said they were ’surprised’ and ‘chagrined’ by Obama’s declaration in June that he doesn’t have to comply with provisions in a war spending bill that puts conditions on aid provided to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund...

Obama’s free lunch is over

AntiWar.Com
by Philip Giraldi

07/23/09

I am one of those conservatives who has been inclined to cut President Barack Obama some slack on foreign policy and national security issues. I believe that he inherited a ‘worst possible’ international situation with the United States universally hated, two wars being lost and a third one waiting in the wings, an ‘ally’ in Israel with an elected government that was both racist and heedless of the national interest of its great benefactor, and anti-American populism on the march everywhere in Latin America. To be sure, Obama has moved quickly to change the ‘tone’ of the conversation, restoring civility with many of America’s neighbors and friends. He has demonstrated that he is serious about a Palestinian state and has established the principle that it is better to negotiate with adversaries than to start preventive wars. All of that granted however, President Obama has failed to carry out the change that he promised when he was running for office...

Obama is delaying the economic recovery

The American Spectator
by Peter Ferrara

07/22/09

Don’t believe the Obama Administration rhetoric about how this economy has just turned out to be so difficult and they are doing the best they can. While the economy is still getting worse, the truth is the recovery is long overdue. The National Bureau of Economic Research dates this recession as starting some time during December, 2007. The longest recession since World War II was 16 months, with the average being 10 months. The current recession has now lasted 19 months. By this reckoning, we should have had a normal cyclical recovery at least 3 months ago...
