Headington residents in new fight over phone mast

5:27pm Friday 17th April 2009

By Amanda Williams

NEIGHBOURS are facing a second battle against a mobile telephone mast being put on top of a Headington church.

Vodafone is in discussion with St Michael and All Angels Church, in Jack Straw’s Lane, about using it as a site for a mobile phone mast.

But residents have complained about the lack of information surrounding the safety of the mast.

Four years ago, Hutchison 3G scrapped plans to put a mast on the church because of the level of opposition from local.

Administration Releases Torture Memos, Will Not Act

Jennifer Loven and Devlin Barrett, The Associated Press: "President Barack Obama absolved CIA officers from prosecution for harsh, painful interrogation of terror suspects Thursday, even as his administration released Bush-era memos graphically detailing - and authorizing - such grim tactics as slamming detainees against walls, waterboarding them and keeping them naked and cold for long periods. Human rights groups and many Obama officials have condemned such methods as torture. Bush officials have vigorously disagreed. In releasing the documents, the most comprehensive accounting yet of interrogation methods that were among the Bush administrations most closely guarded secrets, Obama said he wanted to move beyond 'a dark and painful chapter in our history.'"

Torture Memos Revealed

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "CIA interrogators were given legal authorization to slam an alleged 'high-value' detainee's head against a wall, place insects inside a 'confinement box' to induce fear and force him to remain awake for 11 consecutive days, according to a closely guarded August 1, 2002, legal memo released publicly by the Justice Department for the first time on Thursday."

Auchterarder phone mast protest grows

Apr 17 2009

by Lynn Duke, Strathearn Herald

THE Auchterarder phone mast tussle entered a new stage this week, after Telefonica 02 asked Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) for the go-ahead to put up a 15m replica telegraph pole and ancillary equipment.

The threat has re-galvanized the anti-mast forces, three years after they managed to keep an Orange mast out – a subsequent appeal overturned PKC refusal but in the event Orange decided not to go ahead.

Bailout bandits

In These Times
by Joel Bleifuss

04/16/09

In these days of ‘bank stabilization plans’ (bailouts for fat cats) and ‘overseas contingency operations’ (wars), Americans who celebrated President Obama’s victory last November are beginning to recognize that ‘change we can believe in’ is now endangered by serious obstacles, including obstructionist personalities within the administration itself. What are Obama’s progressive supporters to make of the fact that Lawrence Summers (who crafted banking deregulation during the Clinton administration) is Obama’s chief economic vizier? Or the fact that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, a Summers protege, seems determined to address the economic crisis by protecting the banking industry executives with whom he was cosseted for the past five years as head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York?

Is torture really over?

Salon
by Mark Benjamin

04/17/09

In his statement announcing the release of the Bush administration’s torture memos Thursday, President Barack Obama ruled out prosecuting whoever was in the room during the CIA’s ‘enhanced interrogation’ sessions. ‘In releasing these memos, it is our intention to assure those who carried out their duties relying in good faith upon legal advice from the Department of Justice that they will not be subject to prosecution,’ he said. Obama made it clear he is generally ready to move on from the whole issue. So don’t expect David Addington, former counsel to Vice President Dick Cheney and self-appointed interrogation expert, to be hauled into court anytime soon...

These United States: Too big to fail?

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

04/17/09

In the United States, the idea of secession is considered beyond the pale, and Gov. Perry will no doubt catch a lot of flack for his comments, but the reality is that big countries — and bigness, per se — are on the wane. The future belongs to smaller, more manageable and efficient units, whether political or economic, which can better navigate the troubled waters of the world economy. As much as the know-it-all pundits will mock Perry’s raising of the Texas flag, a serious secession movement in the US, based on regionalist sentiment, is not all that hard to imagine...

It consists of 8 pages of what can only be described as paranoid ranting and conflation...

Homeland Security leaders defend memo on veterans

USA Today

04/19/09

Top Department of Homeland Security officials on Sunday defended an agency intelligence assessment warning that veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan could be susceptible to recruitment by right-wing extremists, though one said it should have been ‘more tightly written and presented.’ Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano said on CNN’s State of the Union that she regrets that some people took offense over the report, but added that ‘a number of groups far too numerous to mention’ were targeting returning veterans to carry out domestic terrorism attacks...

Obama's Reality Check

Mark Weisbrot, The Guardian UK: "Many people, including most of the presidents and leaders of South America, were hoping that President Obama would initiate a serious change in US-Latin American relations, after the low point reached during the Bush years. Change will certainly come - it is happening every week - but there are few if any signs that the initiative will come from the north."
