Pinner residents angry at council gaffe over phone masts

4:07pm Tuesday 24th March 2009

By Tristan Kirk

FURIOUS Pinner residents are facing life opposite an unwanted mobile phone after blundering council officers failed to reject the application in time.

Harrow Council turned down a bid by Orange for an 11.5m high mast on a small piece of grass at the junction between Grove Road and Rayners Lane, after dozens of resident objected to the plans.

But a council officer missed the 56-day deadline to let know Orange know their application had been turned down, meaning the phone company can put up the unwanted mast by default.

Phone-mast plan sparks objections

24 March 2009

BECCLES residents have spoken out against plans for a mobile phone mast just over 20m from their homes.

Vodafone is looking at sites for a new 10m-tall mobile phone mast in a bid to keep up with the latest technology and boost signal strength for users.

Before submitting a formal planning application, it sought the views of the council about the location of the mast.

But their preferred site, on Gresham Road, near the Tesco turn-off from George Westwood Way, has angered some residents.

Pensioner's worry over phone masts

Published Date: 23 March 2009

Antennae on office roof spark health fear

A worried pensioner is raising health fears over a planning application submitted to South Bedfordshire District Council for three mobile phone masts on an office rooftop opposite his home.

The application requests three antennae on separate mounts with equipment cabinets and associated works on the roof of Lavells House in Hockliffe Street/Leston Road, but the 72-year-old is concerned about the health effects on people living or working nearby.

The pensioner's home sits only 40 yards away from the site, and when he received notification of the scheme alarm bells started ringing.

Follow the bailout cash

Newsweek
by Michael Isikoff and Dina Fine Maron

03/21/09

There was plenty of outrage on Capitol Hill last week over the executive bonuses paid out by AIG after getting federal bailout money. But another money trail could make voters just as angry: the campaign dollars to members of Congress from banks and firms that have received billions via the Troubled Asset Relief Program. A Newsweek review of recent filings with the Federal Election Commission found that the political action committees of five big TARP recipients doled out $85,300 to members in the first two months of this year — with most of the cash going to those who serves [sic] on committees who oversee the TARP program.

Enough about the AIG bonuses: Focus on the banks’ billions

New York Daily News
by Michael Goodwin

03/29/09

Get ready to take out the AIG pitchforks again. This time, there is an important use for them. Now that the hysteria over the $165 million in bonuses is cooling, two inquiries aim to find out what AIG did with the bulk of its federal bailout money. Given the $175 billion at stake, those pitchforks can help dig through the details of who is getting huge chunks of taxpayer cash. It’s a twist on the adage to ‘follow the money.’ Finally, probers are following the big money. Against the billions that have vanished, and with more on the hook as AIG unwinds its trading portfolio, Washington’s outrage over the millions paid for bonuses counts as a trivial pursuit. And with the Obama administration seeking new powers to take over troubled companies, the handling of AIG is a test case for whether the government can be trusted with that power. So far, the signs aren’t good. The probes are likely to add to the doubts...

Judgment Day for Geithner

By Mike Whitney

Insolvent financial institutions have to be taken into receivership and liquidated. Shareholders and bondholders will have to take a haircut. And Geithner, Summers and the rest of the White House banking fraternity will have to resign or be fired. Obama should mull over Albert Einstein's sage advice when he said, "The problems we face today cannot be solved by the minds that created them."

China Urges New Money Reserve to Replace Dollar

By DAVID BARBOZA

In another indication that China is growing increasingly concerned about holding huge dollar reserves, the head of its central bank has called for the eventual creation of a new international currency reserve to replace the dollar.

China backs talks on dollar as reserve - Russian source

China and other emerging nations back Russia's call for a discussion on how to replace the dollar as the world's primary reserve currency, a senior Russian government source said on Thursday. Russia has proposed the creation of a new reserve currency, to be issued by international financial institutions, among other measures in the text of its proposals to the April G20 summit.

How big a deal is the loss of the dollar's reserve status?

To answer this question, lets first calculate just how large are the dollar holdings of foreign governments. From the CIA's world Factbook, below is a ranking of countries by reserves of foreign exchange.

Like it or not, many people seem to be resigned to the idea there's no alternative to the public-private investment fund scheme Treasury Secretary Geithner detailed this morning.
