Contractors Gone Wild

In Mother Jones, Bruce Falconer writes: "Allegations of widespread mismanagement and corruption among private contractors in Iraq are nothing new; if anything, tales of cronyism, over-billing, and embezzlement have become so frequent that our national tolerance for them seems only to have increased as the Iraq War has drawn on. Even so, the testimony earlier this week of three whistleblowers before the Senate's Democratic Policy Committee (DPC) stands out for the sheer outrageousness of their accusations - namely that US private contractors looted Iraqi palaces and ministries, stole military equipment, fenced supplies destined for US troops, and even operated a prostitution ring that may have contributed to the death of fellow contractor."

Voting Rights Are Too Important

Two editorials, one from Adam Cohen of The New York Times and the other from The Boston Globe editorial staff, explore the ramifications of the Supreme Court decision this week that upheld a voter ID law in the state of Indiana that will require voters to show photo identification at the polls. Adam Cohen calls for Congress to uphold the Constitution and act to regulate federal elections, while The Boston Globe scolds: "Voting is a fundamental right. ID rules should be no more stringent than is necessary to keep the voting process secure and orderly. That's what Indiana had - until partisan legislators saw an opening and exploited it."

Dawn of an Energy Famine

Jeremy Leggett, for The Guardian UK, reports, "This week the shape of the global energy crisis came into its sharpest focus yet. The world needs renewable energy fast, but as BP and Shell announced record profits, they also demonstrated that they are in essence retreating from renewables, perhaps with the exception of biofuels. They intend to focus their record billions on expanding production of what remains of traditional oil and gas, plus tar sands and liquid fuels from coal - ruinous in their effect on the climate."

US Rejects Canadian's Child Soldier Defense

Jane Sutton reports for Reuters: "A Canadian captured in Afghanistan at age 15 can be tried for murder in the Guantanamo war crimes court, a US military judge ruled in rejecting claims that he was a child soldier who should be rehabilitated rather than prosecuted."

Warships In The Persian Gulf Are Empty Exercises Of Power

American warships, do not in the slightest meet the Iranian "threat" head on. They do the reverse: They strengthen the most radical mentalities of ancient Persia that remain locked in the memories of the country's history. In fact, they only strengthen perfervid anti-Western feelings.

Bush's $70 Billion War Funding Request for 2009

Andrew Taylor reports for The Associated Press: "President Bush sent lawmakers a $70 billion request Friday to fund US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan into next spring, which would give the next president breathing room to make his or her own war policy. Friday's request fills in the details of the $70 billion placeholder that the White House asked for when it sent its budget to Congress in February."

The official story right now is that after having been forced to accept an agreement on dismantling its nuclear weapons facilities, North Korea is again trying to evade its commitments in its usual devious way-"good news" for superhawks like John Bolton, who have held all along that the North Koreans understand only the mailed fist and will exploit negotiations only to trick us.
