Fifth Circuit to Weigh Jurisdiction Over Contractors in Iraq

Daphne Eviatar, reporting for The American Lawyer, writes: "Increasingly, private contractors who aren't trained to work in battlegrounds are paying the price. But whether their employers will ultimately be held accountable for their own actions will depend on the circumstances, on their lawyers, and in some cases, on the judge."

Bush backs away from military contractor investigation

President Bush warned on Tuesday that he may disregard several portions of a massive defense policy bill he signed just one day earlier, including provisions creating a commission to investigate the use of civilian contractors such as Blackwater in Iraq and Afghanistan. CIA Largely in the Dark on Interrogation Tactics

Spencer Ackerman writes for The Washington Independent: "Surprising as it may be, the CIA has never really been in the interrogation business. After 9/11, it turned its back on its own limited history of interrogations and never consulted those in the US with solid experience in that difficult art. Even in the seven years since it has built an interrogation capability mostly from scratch, the agency has never applied the best practices in behavioral science to improve its regimen. The result has been to privilege brutality out of ignorance, which, according to many experts and insiders interviewed, means that interrogation practices that produce faulty information are now at the very heart of the US efforts against a mysterious and still-unfamiliar enemy."

Prozesskostenhilfe ade?

The unmasking of the corporate media

Strike the Root
by Glen Allport

01/28/08

The propaganda is working, to some extent – propaganda always has some effect – but I sense a race in progress between the corporate media’s desire to keep the idea of freedom from getting loose in the world again, versus the spreading awareness among the public that the corporate media absolutely cannot be trusted...

The End of American Liberty

CounterPunch
by Paul Craig Roberts

01/28/08

Thanks to a government that has turned its back on the US Constitution, Americans now have an unaccountable Department of Homeland Security that is already asserting tyrannical powers over US citizens and state governments. Headed by the neocon fanatic Michael Chertoff, the Orwellian-sounding Department of Homeland Security has mandated a national identity card for Americans, without which Americans may not enter airports or courthouses. There is no more need for this card than there is for a Department of Homeland Security. Neither are compatible with a free society …. Bush can do whatever he wants, because Congress has taken its only remaining power–impeachment–off the table. …. The Democrats are not adverse to inheriting the powers in Bush’s precedents. The Democrats, of course, will use the elevated powers for good rather than for evil. Instead of having a bad dictator, we’ll have a good one...

What pledge? Clinton appears in Florida

The Nation
by John Nichols

01/28/08

Hillary Clinton has decided to rewrite the rules of the race for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Like other candidates, she pledged not to campaign in Florida after the state jumped ahead on the schedule of caucuses and primaries set by the Democratic National Committee. She had to make that pledge if she hoped to compete in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses and the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary, as Iowa and New Hampshire zealously guard their starting status on the political calendar. But Iowa and New Hampshire are history and, after a landslide loss in South Carolina on Saturday, Clinton needs a win. So she has begun appearing in Florida in anticipation of Tuesday’s Democratic primary there...

Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act is scary stuff

Tennessean
by David Clark

01/28/08

There is a new anti-terrorism bill in Congress, and this one could take our nation to a place it has never been before. The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 passed in the House in October. It contains enough vague and general language to threaten the freedom of every U.S. citizen, yet it was approved, 404-6. The lopsided vote reminded me of two other resolutions that were adopted with overwhelming support. The combined vote on the Tonkin Gulf Resolution that started the Vietnam War was 502-2. The vote to kick the Iraq war in gear was a more contemplative, but still one-sided, 374-156. Most of the complaints about Congress lately have centered on the divisiveness and failure to compromise on most issues. I think near-total agreement should throw up a red flag, too...

For example, it makes absolutely no sense that Christian pastors would embrace the sudden pro-life candidacy of Mitt Romney and reject the proven, twenty-year pro-life record of Ron Paul. It makes no sense that evangelical Christians would embrace the pro-illegal amnesty, pro-McCain/Feingold, pro-No-Child-Left-Behind, pro-gun control John McCain and reject the proven, twenty-year no-amnesty, pro-freedom, anti-No-Child-Left-Behind, pro-Second Amendment record of Ron Paul. Bill Clinton’s temper negatively affects Hillary’s campaign

Fox News

by Dick Morris & Eileen McGann

01/25/08

Unfortunately, I’ve seen it all before. That picture of the seething, red-faced former president of the United States shaking his finger at members of the press who dare to question his wife’s slimy campaign tactics, is all too familiar to those who have worked closely with him in the past. Like Janus, the two-faced Roman god, there are always been two distinct personalities in Bill Clinton. That charming, smiling gentleman seen in public is too often eclipsed in private by his negative twin evidenced in the eruption of a furious, unexpected, and uncontrollable rage, often accompanied by loud cursing and occasionally, even physical violence. It’s not a pretty picture. I’ve been at the other end of that anger too many times and I was always amazed at the suddenness and intensity of his fury...

The dominant Clinton

Boston Globe
by Jeff Jacoby

01/27/08

On the day a new president is inaugurated, the outgoing president traditionally keeps a low profile, slipping away quietly after the swearing-in and leaving the spotlight to his successor. Not Bill Clinton. His first order of post-presidential business on Jan. 20, 2001, was a 90-minute rally at Andrews Air Force Base, complete with honor guard and a 21-gun salute. ‘I left the White House, but I’m still here!’ Clinton told the crowd. ‘We’re not going anywhere!’ Like most Americans, I was ready for the tawdry psychodrama that was the Clinton administration to be over. But something told me he wasn’t being rhetorical...

IMF Head in Shock Fiscal Warning

By Chris Giles and Gillian Tett in Davos

The intensifying credit crunch is so severe that lower interest rates alone will not be enough "to get out of the turmoil we are in", Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, warned at the weekend.

Waving Goodbye to Hegemony

By Parag Khanna, New America Foundation

Parag Khanna of the New America Foundation argues in the New York Times that the choices the Bush has made have profoundly weakened U.S. power in the world. Indeed, he suggests that Bush set the U.S. on a downward spiral, such that Europe, China and India are picking up the pieces and making Washington irrelevant.

The Beginning of the End

William Rivers Pitt, writing for Truthout, says: "If Bush's lips are moving, it means he must be lying; so it has been for all those days, and so it was again on Monday evening. Some 75 percent of the citizenry believe this country to be 'on the wrong track,' and since the gomer giving the speech last night is seen as being largely responsible for putting us all on this 'wrong track' to begin with, a vast American majority pretty much didn't give a fig about what he had to say. All that most people cared about was the historic significance of the night itself. It was The Last Bush SOTU Speech Ever."

Bush’s latest Exec Order: No earmarks?

Fox News

01/29/08

President Bush was set to act Tuesday on his State of the Union promise to sign an executive order directing federal agencies to ignore any future earmarks not voted on by Congress. Bush warned lawmakers he would flourish his veto pen if Congress does not rein in the number of congressional earmarks — money set aside for pet projects — that make it into law without a vote. As many as 95 percent of earmarks are inserted after Congress has voted on appropriations measures, and the pork is never seen by most lawmakers. Bush called on Congress during last year’s State of the Union to cut the number of earmarks in half, but Monday night he chided lawmakers for failing to do so... State of the Union Address: Another lost opportunity to show true leadership

Hawaii Reporter
by U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka

01/28/08

It is unfortunate that President Bush has once again fallen short in his responsibility to lead this great nation of ours into a future of prosperity for all – one that continues our leadership in researching and developing alternative energy, preserving our natural resources, and ensuring access to affordable health care and education. Once again, the President’s speech was full of misinformation...
